Overall the food was fine here, and the views of the city were great... but I can't look past the service. We didn't have someone come over to our group for 20 minutes, and when someone did they forgot about our drink order. When we finally ordered and got food, it took us about 25 minutes to gets plates and silverware. We asked another waiter for plates in the meantime and he didn't get them or tell anyone we asked. I came here for happy hour (5:15PM) on the terrace on a Thursday to catch up with a couple friends. The cocktails and food were good, but what really makes this place is its tropical atmosphere and the beautiful sunset views from the terrace! The place was already pretty busy when we got there, so flagging down our server did prove difficult at times. For food, we used the chips & salsa deal on Yelp, and the pineapple salsa was refreshing especially paired with the (plantain!) chips. From their cocktail menu, I tried the Mai Tai and the Feels Like Summer at the recommendation of my server--both were on-brand with the tropical theme of the place. We were seated near the middle of the terrace so weren't able to enjoy the rooftop views the entire time, but there are several small alcoves that are a respectful distance from other customers' tables that we were able to enjoy the sunset from before we left. We had been worried that the outdoor seating area might be too hot in the summertime, but it was actually quite breezy out. As a final note, I had read ahead about the parking situation, so came prepared to have to search for parking; I wasn't actually able to find the lot, so both my friends and I ended up parking on the street. read more

I made a group reservation weeks in advance for 8 of us. We met up here this past Saturday for my fiancé's birthday. First off, yes it's located inside the Marriott but it does not feel like a sterile hotel rooftop bar. There is a separate entrance from the lobby that you can use to get up and it's full of character. It rained and thundered all weekend in Austin but the rooftop bar is covered and had plenty of seating for us! We definitely appreciated this since at other open air establishments you're out of luck with bad weather. Although we were seated in a lounge style setting, the manager made an effort to bring over chairs so the 8 of us could sit comfortably. They have a two hour time limit, which I totally get with COVID, but they graciously allowed us to sit for a bit a longer. The food was tapas style and overall okay. We did love the egg rolls. Def come for the creative drinks and ambiance! It's not a sit down dinner type of spot as you can tell from their menu. My friends and I came to Zanzibar because we wanted to celebrate our friend's upcoming wedding and we had heard how popular the place was, so obviously we booked a reservation. Immediately when we were taken to our table our server had already came up and asked us what cocktails we had wanted, yet some of us hadn't even sat down at the table yet. Through out the night she seemed very inattentive and that she just didn't care to be there or care about her job at all. When we go to pay for the bill we ask for it to be split the 4 ways we are allowed since we only had 6 in our party. The server tells us that isn't a thing and that they have never allowed that. We told her that we were told twice during the confirming over our reservation that this was allowed and that the hostess at the stand also told us this was allowed. It even states on our open table reservation that we can do this (picture attached)! She said she had never done that and that we were still unable to do it, even though we had been told multiple times prior that this was possible. Unfortunately the gratuity was already added to the bill, because we would have gave a bigger tip to the waitress from the different section that was so sweet and attentive to us (not her table!) I've been wanting to stop here ever since the new Marriott opened. I finally got the chance to come to Zanzibar for happy hour and was really looking forward to trying the tiki drinks and taking in Austin's newest rooftop bar. I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed. While the design and the decor of the restaurant is nice and takes you into a tropical paradise, I was surprised to see the restaurant mostly empty during prime happy hour. By the time we left around 7pm the restaurant wasn't even half full and it was a beautiful day. I'm not sure why it's so difficult to get a reservation here. While this is a rooftop bar I should note that most tables here do not have a great view. You are lucky if you get a high top or a table near the edge. The highlight of the experience was definitely the drinks. A bit sweet for my liking, but you are at a tiki bar after all so you should know what you're getting into. These are the perfect drinks to sip by the pool. The food is just ok. We tried the sliders, the chips and salsa, the pork wontons, and the duck egg rolls. None of them were stand outs but were good enough for an after work happy hour. Since the happy hour deal doesn't seem to be posted anywhere, I'll note that if you come before 6pm their specialty drinks are $3 off and small bites are $7. Overall, I was a bit underwhelmed by Zanzibar. If you're a staying at the hotel in the summer it's worth a visit, but I don't feel the need to come back with so many other options in downtown Austin. read more

Reservations for 4 on a weekday night was a great time. Now that the time has changed it gets darker faster so longer to enjoy the city lights atop a rooftop. It can get a little crowded during the day as it's right next to the hotel pool but we came around sunset and there were plenty of seats. They have a number of speciality cocktails, including some non-alcoholic ones. Our group ordered the Duke's Pearl, Feels like Summer, and Sunbird Spritz. All were so good and came in different, fun glasses. Even though it was outdoor, it felt like it was temperature controlled very well. I'm so glad that I was able to check this place out! They opened late last year and have been taking a lot of special precautions to make sure that guests and staff are safe. There's a lot of table space and you should make a reservation just to be safe. The food is really flavorful and the drinks are really fun. Don't get me wrong I love a good chick spot but I in general was not that impressed. They are safe for covid and require reservations, which made us feel better. But their menu is focused on cocktails and the food was all smallish plates. Lots of people and if you can go at sunset it's very pretty! My favorite was the chicken wings, nice and tender with a little kick of seasonings, duck egg rolls were good as well, and salsa was just alright. I liked this rooftop bar which was a fun vibe BUT could not get over how long the tables are were that we were seated at, as in knee height. Like how are you supposed to eat this food without hunching over or making a mess of yourself? I think it was more of a hangout space they sat us at and was not suitable for dinner dining. You get on a elevator and it takes you away to a rooftop bar that is out of this world. The backdrop is spectacular with the Austin skyline. The restaurant has a combination of chair and couch seating. It was on a chillier night and they had tiki torches going which was a nice touch with the cool weather. The drinks were strong and the food was just as good. The menu is a little expensive but you are paying for the experience. I ordered the duck egg rolls, pork wontons, and the devil and the deep blue sea. The egg rolls were my favorite and the egg rolls were huge. The drink was great with the mix between the bourbon, pineapple, and orange really complimented each other well. I LOVE zanzibar. there is an elevator on the street that takes you all the way to the rooftop restaurant and the vibes are everything. we got chairs looking out at the skyline and it was so cool. definitely more of a bites and grab a drink place than a sit down restaurant service but so cool. i got the kahuna burger and it was so yummy i would definitely order again. the only thing is the service was mediocre and the waiter wasn't very friendly. none the less, i would definitely come back! The hand rolls were very good, too. I did try the duck egg rolls and vegetable hand roll at a reception the following day. The egg rolls were ok, but the hand roll was very good. I recommend all of the hand rolls! The atmosphere was really great. All of the tables are more like lounges, so it would be difficult to eat dinner there.
