WONDERFUL! What a delightful place! It felt like we stayed in a cozy inn or a great aunt's extra bedroom. The folks that are renovating this 1950's motel are doing a great job. We were checked in by Elizabeth, who was just delightful, plus she was very welcoming to our dog and gave us great info on where we could walk Jake. (We chose the very grassy and clean Memorial Park just a short walk away.) She also mentioned the Sunflour Café down the street for breakfast, and it was AMAZING! Homemade, fresh everything, and the cinnamon roll might be the best pastry I've ever eaten. Our room was decorated with real books, duck decor, soft towels, and a very comfortable bed with plenty of pillows. I did have a little trouble with getting the correct water temperature in the shower (I was warned), and Elizabeth again was very helpful and apologetic that they hadn't gotten that fixed perfectly just yet. There is a bit of noise from the intersection just outside, but all in all, the three of us would love to stay here again. read more

This small and quite motel is great as every room has a different decor and you feel at home. Clean rooms and kitchen's with comfy bed's and chairs. The service is great with the prices are worth writing about as I would not even consider going elsewhere. I stayed when the temps were in the single numbers and was very please how warm the room stayed not like those drafty box hotels. With other business to conduct in the area during 2016 and I do plan on staying here again. If your passing through stop by but I'd call ahead as it seems to get full quick. Loved it. Great vibe and unique decor, and the owner was really friendly and accommodating. It's got a style and he fully embraces it. Excellent location if you're heading to the Dunes or Creede or the surrounding area. Yes, there are things that may need repair, but it's small stuff: tiles, a loose or disconnected headboard, etcetera. It's fantastic for the price and it's CLEAN. That's the most important part. No bedbugs (I check at EVERY location I visit). It's also an easy walk to late night food. (I mean, late night in these towns is like 8pm, but you get it.) read more

Shabby? Yes. Chic? No. My room had 2 blankets NAILED to the wall as curtains. The chair had a blanket thrown over it to cover the holes in the chair. The ceiling light had only one dim bulb, The bathroom had 2 bulbs, one of which was burned out. It was so dark in this room I had to use the flashlight on my cell phone to see into my suitcase, so don't plan on being able to read anything here. As I stepped out of the shower next morning, I happened to glimpse down at the floor around the toilet. Yikes. Was that black mold on the tiles? Overall this room was dark and depressing, and there was no way to get any fresh air or light, except to leave your room door open. The bed was comfy and the room was quiet, but I do regret staying here, although I usually love these little vintage motels. I would definitely not stay here again. read more

So wonderful, I highly recommend this place. Prices are fair, only $5 extra for dogs. The motif is the best type of "laid back country folk," I've encountered!! Front desk was accommodating and friendly. We made reservations, cancelled them because of car troubles, fixed the car, and re-scheduled our reservations. read more

Stayed 3/18-19/ 2016 Pros: Reasonably priced, Looks cute and fun (clever decor), Close to the things we were doing, Customer service was about average and what I expected. Cons: Heater was ON or OFF (electric fireplace), no night stands, luggage racks, closets, or tables to place your things, drain in the shower was incredibly slow, mattress springs were sprung and squeaked every time we moved, walls are paper thin - we could hear everything our neighbors were doing inside their rooms, and in their cars. Neither one of us got a decent night's sleep either of the two nights we were there. Worst part - something chewed on me pretty badly during our stay in room #6 (Bears). At first I thought it was an allergy to their detergent, but as the welts on my arms, chest, back and face calmed down with some antihistamines, they are clearly bites. I suspect bed bugs and will be calling the hotel in the morning to speak with someone about it. Final verdict - never again. read more

The first room the toilet took 5 flusher to flush toilet paper and bathroom was disgusting. I will not be taking a shower at this place. Not worth $75 for the night maybe $25 max. read more

Put this one on your "road less traveled" bucket list. It was charming and quaint, as well as clean and friendly. Each room is decorated differently and looks like a cabin experience. Stopped here on our way from the Great sand Dunes National Park. Possibly the friendliest staff ever! I was really excited to stay in the mule deer room as it was clean and overly decorated with mule deer - it was cheesy and did not disappoint!! Would stay here again. Not the best choice for a night. Rooms are decorated way over the top with wildlife. We were in the mule deer room. Antlers everywhere! While the decor was interesting and unique, that was fine. The rest of the room was very outdated. The carpet was old and the room had an old urine smell, especially near the bathroom. The tv was an older tube style tv, worked fine, but not as nice as most places have upgraded to flat screens by now. One of the beds, the sheets were questionable, as I spotted dog fur and hair on them. Not the worst place I have stayed, but their rooms need serious updating. read more

Perfect for what we were looking for. Paid 52 dollars after tax. Hot/good water pressure, kitchenette with a full fridge, microwave, coffee pot. We had a flat screen with cable and fast wifi. Very nice front desk service (possibly it was the owner?). We stayed in the white tail deer room #2 and had zero complaints. If we have to put a con, the only thing I can think of is that the towels were small. Big deal. We loved it. I doubt we will ever be back in the area but if we do, we are staying here. I just wanted a good night's sleep. They told my it was the last available room. It was actually two rooms, and would have been great if I had a companion. Apparently I slept in the wrong bed. I don't know what happened to the sheets, but it was like sleeping on sandburs. I definitely won't go back. read more

Our stay at the Rio Grande Motel in Monte Vista, Colorado was fun. We stayed in the "Big Horn Sheep" room which was decorated like a hunting lodge. The ceiling was decorative with natural dark and honey colored wood crown molding. The picture of scenery had pine cones around the frame. Another picture had "first day of issue" postage stamps ... all of which had the theme of "big horn mountain sheep." Another frame surrounded a burlap bag displaying the brand "Big Horn Potatoes." The refrigerator had a big photo of another "Big Horn Sheep"... The rug on the floor had images of bears and bear footprints.... Everything was kind-of like a hunting lodge. Handles on the dresser and cabinets were made of antlers. Even the ceiling light had antler horns. The bed posts were beautiful 8-10 inch diameter logs. The sheets on the bed were printed with fishermen. This is an old motel, so the bathroom was a bit tiny with only a shower and electrical plug-outlets were a bit oddly placed in the room. The TV remote was missing so the innkeeper quickly provided a replacement. We forgot our charger for our "ear buds" but the innkeeper quickly provided a "loaner-charger" for our stay. We would certainly stay there again. read more

The place is very cute and unique, the room was always clean, good water pressure, each room seems pretty unique, I have a kitchenette area and a bunch of items included for me, like utensils, a full size fridge, basic bathroom accessories, etc. The only thing that is noticeable are the people I hear in the next room or people outside talking in front. read more

My fiancée and younger sister were passing by and needed a room for the night. We have stayed at cheaper motels that were the Plaza compared to this one. I automatically felt unsafe when a woman wearing street clothes opened the door as we were walking to the room. We waited for her to leave thinking there was a mixup. She came out with a Coca Cola in hand and handed another woman (in housekeeping uniform) the key. She then proceeded to trading keys so we would feel more comfortable. (What's the point if they both open the room?!) when we walked in it was obvious someone had just used the bathroom and didn't "air it out". That's not the worst, once we were all showered and settled, we went to bed. My sister kept saying "I feel a bug, I feel bugs", but being a kid in a new place I figured it was her imagination. That was until I woke up not 10 minutes later after feeling constant tingles on my legs. I immediately pulled back the covers and found myself and her covered in little red dots. Needless to say we didn't sleep well, if at all, that night. The room smelled like someone lit a large cigar and let it burn out on the beds. Overall the room was smelly, sketchy, bug infested, and unsanitary. read more

we had a one night stay for a vacation road trip. The rooms were EXCEPTIONALLY clean. I mean, not even dust on any of the antlers décor. We stayed in the MULE DEER room and had no problems at all. The lady who checked us in was very nice and friendly. The price was great too. I give this 4 stars, only because I don't rate anything perfect. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again if in the area. For some reason it will not let me rate this with stars on my phone. read more

"The Loft," the western-animals-theme suite of 3 bedrooms and 1 bath they gave us (even though we only needed one bed), had serious water problems; apparently major water-line work was going on in town and a line broke the night we stayed. Friendly woman who checked us in didn't know (the line break apparently hadn't happened yet). Shower the night we checked in was a feeble trickle, and I do mean a trickle, and alternated between scalding and freezing cold. In morning, no water at all by 7am, when we left early due to lack of water. No owner/attendant on premises late at night or apparently until 8 am in morning, so we had no idea what was going on. $79 for an extremely frustrating overnight stay. Wifi was good. Oh, and watch your head when you go to put trash in wastebasket--both of us hit our heads on the antlers on the shelf above it. UPDATE 10/3/15: Owner got in touch; we split the room cost 50/50 at my suggestion and he quickly sent a check for the refund. Satisfied with the solution, thanks. read more
