After lugging the sleds in my youngest tried to use one on the first tiny dune and the board became delaminated making it useless and meaning we had to lug it around while the kids shared the other two. Upon returning them, I pointed out that the board didn't even work wince and asked if they could do anything to make it right. The worker just trotted out the "no refunds" sign... a total rip off!

The visitor center was well maintained, with clean restrooms, an informative museum, and had a short film highlighting the dune ecosystem. There is also a large gift shop, though prices were on the higher side. While I would not consider it a destination on its own, it is absolutely worth a stop if you're traveling through this part of the state. Note: No vehicles of any type are allowed on the dunes.

It's a bit of a smaller park in terms of trails and not going to be like RMNP so make sure you know what you're getting into. We planned our trip for May when the creek is usually flowing and the dunes are optimal for sledding. Unfortunately for us we hit a patch of bad weather and it was drizzling our whole day spent here. Additionally the park is experiencing a dry spell and the creek that is usually flowing in May was still dry. C'est la vie! We still had a blast climbing the dunes, letting the kids play in the sand, and taking in the views. To be honest the views are the best part - it's incredible to see these dunes and learn more about the history of the landscape in this region of Colorado. We didn't get to sled as the conditions were not ideal for it but we plan on someday returning and doing the full experience. If you're on the fence about coming here it's well worth a visit!

Definitely recommend this resort as at least a two (2) night base camp for your ultimate planned NP excursion. Arrive/check-in then rent your Sand Boards for your next day use at the NP (and arrive early at the NP before the sand gets too hot!). After your Sand Dunes park play, return to this resort to unwind and relax in a natural, therapeutic spa fashion. Be aware: There is good, tasty food on-site (breakast, lunch and dinner) and the selection is varied but not elegant! And, there is no other food locations in the area. BYOB and mixers - you can buy ice upon arrival. Finally, get to the Adult Greenhouse before 11am to secure a lounge chair as there is not many. Kudos to all the facility and concession personnel, most of whom live nearby, that do their utmost to ensure that your stay is memorable.

There are 2 campsites one will cross before getting to Como Lake if your in a sticky situation. 3. Takes about 5-7 hours to get to Como Lake. There may be a large stream or two interrupting the trail at some parts that one must navigate (over 100 yeards after rainfall) 4. 3 hours to summit blanca after leaving Como Lake. 5. Will pass 3 lakes in all reaching peak. One with a large 50 foot waterfall. 6. Not many people climb this fourteener compared to others because of its location. 7. Ellingwood and Little Bear are accessible from this peak. 8. This is a Moderately Difficult Fourteener. 9. Como Lake and Summit offer spectacular views.

It's an odd mix of new and worn, with a muggy atmosphere and questionable beds. I even found insects on the bed, and the window was difficult to open. To make matters worse, the balcony is open, meaning anyone, including an unruly child, could easily access your window. The only positives are the location, the view and the friendliness of the staff. Unfortunately, that's not enough to justify a higher rating,I wouldn't give it more than one star. Breakfast is advertised, however, gas station breakfast seems to be superior. Overall, this place has a great potential, but why anyone should invest in making this place better? Their rooms are overpriced and the return is only the near location to the National Park. A hotel in Alamorosa is 30 min away, and perhaps a better choice.

However, both the heater and the light were already plugged in, so in practice, there wasn't really a free outlet available--unless I missed something! One interesting thing to note about the dome is the "window" situation. The curtains only cover about four out of the six panels, meaning there are gaps around the edges where people can see in. We ended up using towels and pillows for privacy. The shared bathrooms were exactly as described and totally functional! Not a big deal, but a couple more hooks or maybe a small shelf would make a nice difference. while I don't have a photo, I have to mention the adorable resident cat named Peppermint, who patiently waited outside the bathroom for some pets. So cute!

Upon entering, we were greeted by Matt who welcomed us with the biggest smile and asked us to share our experience that we had in the Crocodile Rescue in Zambia. Matt and the other employees are so passionate about all the rescued animals at the Park. We were greeted by another employee who explained that all the animals have either been confiscated by law enforcement, given up by their owners, or simply found (the giant iguana was found sitting in a tree by a man walking a neighborhood). All the animals have pasts that aren't the best but they get to live the rest of their lives in a sanctuary getting the proper care they deserve. The Park is vast and there are plans to make it even larger. What I thought would take only 30 minutes took well over 2 hours. I am a kid at heart and also love photography so this was best way to spend our early afternoon. I absolutely adore the staff!! They are amazing and are passionate, which shows in their personalities and how they light up talking about all the different animals.
