My heart is overjoyed to find these folks still in business! Been eating at Zarates for nearly ten years now. They have trimmed a few things off their menu and added some new items. Just had their curry shrimp last night and it tasted amazing. My lady as always ordered her favorite Aji de Gallina. The fried plantains and Jamaican jerk chicken nachos are out standbys. Drinks this evening were Chicha sours and Mojitos which were spot on though we often do margaritas too. I've been meaning to check out this place for a while, but we don't venture into Edmond too often. I'm glad we finally made it -- the staff were welcoming and friendly right from the start. I really appreciate the option to choose between Tex-Mex and Latin cuisines. The place was somewhat spacious but quite dim. We arrived during peak dinner hours but still managed to get a table, which was a relief. The complimentary chips, salsa, and queso were a great start -- the chips were thin, crispy, and fresh. Our server was sweet and cheerful, making the experience even better. Cocktails were strong and well-made. For the food, I tried the lomo saltado. It was flavorful and the meat was tender, but it was a bit on the oily side, and I'm not sure I would order it again. It's a small place with a great variety of Hispanic foods. I saw Peruvian, Argentinian, and Mexican dishes. The may be others on there also. The meal I had was great. The portions were large. The cocktail menu has drinks unique to the Hispanic countries that created them. Very good. The service was okay. My side of plantains was forgotten. The process are fair. I heard about this place from my coworker and I was very excited to try this place, but I was a little disappointed to say the least. The curry shrimp had a nice kick to it, but the sauce was a little on the oily side. The plantains tasted frozen and I could taste the old oil in them. Overall, they were not fresh. The chicken tortillas soup was not authentic, the broth was too watery, tasted like Campbell soup broth. The best plate was the asada plate and I can't remember the name. I liked the beans but no one else would try them. I might have to rethink some of my previous reviews because this IS the best flavor in Edmond. We have been to Zarates several times and have never been disappointed. They have a nice variety of Latin and Peruvian food. Our waiter was really attentive to all our needs. Tip: Their salsa is on the weak side so if you like it hotter, ask for a hotter salsa. It's too hot (for me) but you mix with the mild and it's just right. After 30 minutes of waiting after being seated by the woman in black, we flagged down the lady in blue and finally got an order in. A total of 4 parties including ourselves were in the restaurant (two of which were after us and served before us). This was very disappointing service. I admire the woman in blue who didn't originally have our table, but has done great since taking us. This place has good food, but horrible service. I recommend working on your communication between staff so that sections are coordinated properly and all customers can feel attended to. The lady in black was also flirting with the table behind us which was very unprofessional. I just wish we had a designated server from the beginning. Zarate's management gets 2 thumbs down. Went for a late lunch with fam and was told they'd honor the lunch price. Staff came back stating they couldn't find management and that they couldn't honor lunch. After asking for a manager a very young lady dressed in a bra and yoga pants stated she is the manager and had no idea of this and wanted to fix the issue for us to be able to come back. After talking in circles for 10 minutes she didn't fix anything and instead blamed her waitress; which the waitress was more than communicative and respectful. Food and ambiance have been the same since forever, and only gotten worse. Not impressed and will not be returning. read more

Had this many times elsewhere, and they did this very well! Meat was cooked just right, and the flavors were authentic. I got the salmon that came with a salad, sliced avocado, marinated onions, and yucca. The portion wasn't very big for the salmon, but the fish was cooked just nice. Crunchy on the outside and flakey on the inside. The little chimichurri on top blended with the salmon wonderfully as well - just would've wished for a slightly bigger portion on the salmon. The decor isn't really fancy, but it does have items from the various countries represented in the cuisine offered. But really, it's all about the food as it should be. Our party of three family members shared a large house margarita on the rocks and ended up getting a second. I had the Mofongo con Vegetables (excellent spices, sauce, etc). Another had the Argentina Steak Chimichurri (a very tender and flavorful skirt steak topped with a tasty chimichurri sauce). Favorite Latin food in Oklahoma! (I'm not talking about Mexican and it's the only Latin food I've had in Oklahoma, but I spent much of my life is South Florida so I know some things). This place is owned by a Peruvian family. Now that you have all the context, let's get started! I went to Zarate's with my husband and two little boys (5 and 2). We all had empanadas and the meat was delicious and made me miss picadillo because I could taste hidden olive flavor (my husband hates olives and couldn't taste it--also good). We all loved them! I had the Lomo Saltado which is chunks of spicy skirt steak, onions and peppers, side of two plantains (plantanos maduras though the man assured me before we ordered that he only had tostones), and yucca. The skirt steak was mostly tender which was impressive. Too spicy for my little guy. My husband had jerk chicken which again was hunks of chicken, black beans and rice with two plantains pieces. His jerk chicken was mango-ey and sweet. Less spicy than my skirt steak and safe for the 2 year old. 5 year old had corn dog and they let us swap out the fries for beans and rice (because he had to eat something non American--our rule). We unintentionally ended up eating here but it ended up being a good thing! It was National Tequila Day and we were headed to 3 Tequilas for some dinner & drinks only to find that it was WAY too crowded. Well, Zarates was down the street and I remembered a guy had recently suggested it to us so we thought - Why not? Let's try it! The patio tables had umbrellas that helped keep us cool in the summer heat. Our waiter was really great and attentive. They also had a lot of dishes to choose from. My boyfriend ended up ordering the Argentina Steak with Chimichurri and I got the Peruvian Chicken Kabobs. My chicken was a little dry, but overall we both enjoyed our meals and I like how Zarates kind of has a "hole in the wall" vibe going on. Yes, they have Mofongo! And fried Yucca, both are a little hard to find here in the land of the chicken fried steak. When I find mofongo, I eat it! What makes Zarate's Latin Mexican Grill stand out is the uniqueness of having a good varied Mexican menu along with Latin American menu items. We ate here in 2016 and really enjoyed the Brazilian BBQ Chicken & Shrimp. South American food is not on every street corner in Oklahoma. Although, limited we have found several good restaurants; this is one. Anyway, it was time for a return visit and a quick run to Edmond. They start the meal with thin crisp tortilla chips, a very good mild salsa and queso. It you like heat ask for their hotter salsa. It will go well with whatever you order and help to bring the heat level up a little. My wife had the Tamale Honduran Banana Leaf. White rice, black beans and a tamale make up this meal. There was little or no seasoning on the rice and beans and mild spices in the tamale. She really liked it. I tasted of the beef in the tamale and it did have a good flavor. I can't pass up the mofongo, so I went for the Mofongo with Shrimp. It is a good sized meal with a mound of mofongo, a few fried plantains, and a dozen shrimp smothered in a sauté of chopped tomato, tomato sauce and onions. It is not spicy or hot. I was a little disappointed in the mofongo. I expected the fried crushed plantains, with chicharrones (or bacon) and garlic to stand out. It had a nice crunch to it, but was lacking in flavor, I think it was just some tostones that had been mashed up into a little pile. Absolutely delicious! I wish it came with more rice, but other than that the portion of the whole meal was generous. I took half of it for lunch the next day. They have other traditional Latina dishes such as Cuban sandwiches, Lomo Saltado, enchiladas, and more. DESSERT *Flan* I thought it was just okay, I think they didn't add enough eggs to it, and the flan was more of a thick creamy texture instead of light and creamy? I prefer my flan a bit lighter...but the sugar was on point--not too much and not too less! I would recommend getting the traditional dishes from this place. Zarate's is a dependable choice for Tex-Mex and other Latin American cuisines. I have eaten here a dozen times or so in the past 20 years, and it is always very satisfying. Queso and salsa are deemed excellent by most people who come here, and servers bring each diner his or her own tiny ramekin of each, so you won't need to share with anyone else. Yes, you can double-dip your chips to your heart's content and no one will look at you sideways. Burritos, enchiladas, mofongo, tamales, quesadillas: all are well-prepared, and the the portions are copious. I had the shrimp fajita lunch special and had to go home to sleep it off. The dining rooms are a bit dated, but kitschy, with license plates, maps, and other mementos from various countries where Spanish is spoken. But the bathrooms (and the entry area) are oddly situated as you will see upon entry. A little updating wouldn't hurt. Even so, that's no reason not to go and take the whole family. Zarate's is one of the better places in the greater OKC area for cuisine of this kind. I will go back again sometime soon, too. read more
