Garlic Naan (very fluffy, fresh, and flavorful)

I came here for dinner yesterday. The service was great! I was greeted as soon I came in and was served with such a hospitable owner! We ordered the chicken tikka masala, the lamb kabob, and chicken tandoor, with garlic and jalapeño naan. All the food was great! Although my favorites were the chicken tandoor and chicken tikka masala. They had a great balance in flavors. I liked that the chicken tikka was a very authentic Pakistani dish. You could taste the flavors of well marinade and fresh chicken combo. I will be back! The food here reminds me of Pakistani home food with a restaurant twist. I will be back

We really enjoyed this restaurant! Always a plus that it is all halal meat. The restaurant is very cute inside , it has great decor and we got upstairs seating area which felt like we are in someone's house. The service was also very good the waiters were attentive and suggested good things to us. The food was perfect we tried samosa Chaat and papri Chaat both were flavorful and good amount of spice. The entrees we got were chicken Tikka masala/tandoori fish/ and Lahori chicken karahi so good and flavorful. I enjoyed all three entrees. Don't skip the Nutella naan so good as a dessert! Would love to come back

An indo-Pakistani place with great food and price! They primarily sit the guest in upper level so when you look through the window it may look empty. My favorite in appetizers is samosa chaat and among dishes the grilled mix. Their staff are super friendly and give great suggestions about what to order . Great place for casual lunch or dinner

Beyond amazing ambiance. It's like stepping into a house in Rajastan. Right from the intricate stairway railings to the elaborate faux tree to the work on the walls, they have paid a lot of attention to detail. We can see that a lot of love has gone into designing the place. Coming to the food, the chicken chowmein is the best I have had outside of India. There were some disappointing items on the mixed appetizer platter though.

checked this place out for the first time and it was amazing. having tried many other new haven indian restaurants like sitar, sherkaan, and house of naan, this was by far the best. all ingredients are very fresh and service was also great! owner is always around and had a great time chatting with him until the restaurant closed for the night. definitely coming back here!

Zaroka was an establishment that I have wanted to try for a couple of years, but simply had never gotten around to it. Walking by it on York, Zaroka seems like a cozy, intimate spot perfect for a casual date night or dinner with friends. Thus, when GrubHub was doing a promotion online, I immediately placed my order for Chicken Tikka Masala, specifying "extra spicy." The problem is that they went completely overboard with the spice, to the point where it was absolutely inedible. Did they even try this dish before they served it? I bit into literal chunks of cayenne and paprika not properly mixed into the sauce, and spent minutes coughing. Just to clarify, I grew up eating extremely spicy foods and absolutely love fiery dishes. However, this was way too much. The cayenne completely overwhelmed any savory flavor. It was painful to eat, and needed to take multiple gulps of water for every bite. Perhaps there is no one else to blame but myself for suggesting an "extra spicy" sauce. Putting the sauce aside, the chicken was seriously sub-par. As opposed to being soft, tender, and juicy chunks of chicken enveloped in sauce, the chicken was hard and dry. The outside of the chicken looked similar to the outside of chicken tandoor, like it was barbecued ahead of time and then dunked in sauce, which is not at all how Chicken Tikka Masala should be made. There was no complexity to the dish, just pure cayenne and dry chicken cubes. Unfortunately, given that there are several standout Indian restaurants in New Haven, like Tandoor and Sitar, I cannot recommend Zaroka. Perhaps I will come back and dine in-person to see if my experience was simply an anomaly.

Came for the first time after new ownership, and let me tell you! They are doing something right! Came for a light lunch and ordered the Zaroka Kebab, Matar Paneer, and Garlic Naan. The meal came with basmati rice and a complimentary plate of crispy starter with some chutneys. Don't let the look fool you! When the kebabs came out, they looked dry, but upon first bite I was very pleasantly surprised! A squeeze of lemon and it was so so good! Portions were generous, service was great! Also, for real, the falafel appetizer is NOT to be missed- so so good!

If you enjoy the flavors of Indian food as well as one of those quick service, hot chicken restaurants you probably would enjoy Hot Murga. The chicken sandwich comes in five spice levels from no heat to super hot. I got the standard hot, and it has some kick, but it wasn't overpowering. Then again I enjoy spicy food. I also ordered their spiced mac & cheese. Again, not spicy at all, but flavorful. Also a good portion as I have leftovers for later. I had my food delivered, but this establishment is close to the Yale campus and street parking can be a bit tricky on Howe St. and around Broadway. I've been inside of the space once when it was a different restaurant some years ago, it's not a large space, but I'm pretty sure comfortable if you decided to dine in. If you ever find yourselves at a crossroad between wanting Chick-fil-A and Indian food, this would be a great alternative.

It is a legendary New Haven staple that captures that perfect "never judge a book by its cover" energy--an unassuming, converted diner on Chapel Street that serves some of the most authentic Indian cuisine on the planet. For decades, this has been a mandatory stop on my monthly Chapel Street circuit. I hit up Alternate Universe for my comics first, then walk the 500 feet over to Tandoor to handle my business. Mediterranean is not my jive but it seemed like a good spot for a date night. Seemed. We were seated quickly, which was nice. It wasn't what I'd consider busy, but apparently it was busy for them on this particular night of service. Took about 15min from the time we were seated to have our order taken. Better half says it is usually more calming and intimate. Tonight absolutely was not that. It gives... Starbucks, if it served Mediterranean food... like, no coffee. With teacup candles. Real ones. (fire code???) I ordered the wings, with low expectations. Anyone that knows me and my heart also knows how I feel about a good wing. These wings were not that. They came out looking exactly how I anticipated them to based on what I saw in previous reviews (and the item description, which, shockingly, was painfully accurate) -- sad, and beige. First bite revealed various shades of pink, although the skin was seasoned nicely. I'm partial against this style of chicken wing so its hard for me to give it any credit... moving on. I also had the chicken kebab sandwich... which isn't really a sandwich. Its more of a ... gyro? I liked it. The chicken in the sandwich was really nice. Cooked well, definitely cooked better than the wings. Wish the cuts/pieces were smaller though. It was nice and hot, but also kind of wet, I guess from steam? It came wrapped in sort of a parchment paper, that was also wet. And the closer I got to the end, the more liquid dripped out from the bottom. Water mixed with tomato, other spices and whatnot... it wasn't pretty. I got less and less interested as I made progress. Better half got the Merguez Kebab Sandwich/gyro thing. Similar to my Chicken Kebab, the cuts of meat were huge however it was just hard to come to terms with the notion that they were each fully cooked through, and it was also... wet. More wet than my Chicken Kebab. She didn't finish it, and I don't blame her. The hummus was nice. The pita was hot and fresh. You could see some of the char from the skillet it was made in, which was nice. Unfortunate that either are individual at-cost appetizers (although looking at my receipt, I can infer that the first pita was included with the hummus as I was only charged for one and we had two). I don't think I will be returning there on my own volition. Maybe tonight was a bad night, and that happens sometimes. The staff were certainly nice, and considering it was a Saturday evening, the volume of patrons is worth appreciation. It wasn't rowdy, the music was nice, the ceiling fan blades passing over one of the ceiling lights drove me crazy a little bit, but it is a nice place. I'm just a little let down that this was how my Saturday night dinner went. I'm still hungry, dawg. There was also a woman in scrubs(?) or some sort of inpatient-wear that walked past the restaurant outside, locked eyes with the folks at a table, smiled and waved, and slowly meandered away until she came back to walk in the other direction. Not sure what that was about, but its typical New Haven shit. Stranger things have happened, lol! TLDR if you're not super picky/sensitive about your food and you're a big (gotta be big) fan of Mediterranean Fusion food, I absolutely recommend RAWA. Otherwise... hard pass -- for me, at least. Respectfully.

Jamshed worked in the fishing industry as a young man, but dreamed of working in the restaurant business. He came to the United States in 1989 and worked for a vending machine business. He finally entered the food industry in 2000 when he started "Mughali Foods": a food cart that prepared Indian and Pakistani food. In 2003, Jamshed became the owner of Noor Mahal, an Indian restaurant in Orange, but continued to run the food cart. He sold the restaurant three years later to focus exclusively on the food cart operation. He later dubbed it "Ali Baba's Fusion" and shifted the menu to halal Middle Eastern cuisine. At one point, Jamshed even had six Ali Baba food carts operating around New Haven. The Kalids opened a brick & mortar location in Hamden in 2014. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, the couple cut down their food cart division to a single cart and put most of the focus on the brick & mortar location which was rebranded as "Ali Baba's Kitchen". The menu was also augmented to focus on healthier food options. A second location opened in North Haven in 2025. My wife and I recently sampled Ali Baba's delicious cuisine for the first time. Although I had heard several great things about them for a few years, I never got around to stopping in. While my wife was recovering from a minor surgical procedure at Yale-New Haven Hospital, I ventured to nearby Cedar Street in search of a cheap lunch. Located adjacent to the hospital, the street features a menagerie of food carts that are often visited by hospital visitors and staff. When I saw (and smelled) Ali Baba's food cart, my decision had been made. I ordered the "Mixed Combo" (grilled beef gyro and lemon chicken strips, sautéed onions, rice) and it was phenomenal. A week later, once my wife was home, I decided to head to the brick & mortar location to get takeout. Once again I ordered the "Mixed Combo", my wife ordered the "Side Dishers Bowl" (chicken biryani with ginger chicken and falafel topped with lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, black olives, pickled onions, tamarind sauce, ABK sauce), and we shared sides of "Samosas" (with tamarind sauce and chana masala) and "Hummus" (with pita bread pieces). We think that the food at Ali Baba's is sensational and we plan to order from them again and again! We look forward to trying out the new location in North Haven because it's just a five minute drive from home!
