PLEASE READ At this point it has been more than 2 years since I first met with staff at Zel Skin. It took me a long time to write this because my experience receiving treatments with them was very negative, and it has taken me a long time to recover, both physically and emotionally. For anyone considering treatments with Zel Skin, and in particular, Dr. Adam Schmitt, I would strongly advise you to seek alternate consultations and treatments. Below is the outline of my experience with them. It is difficult for me to write this, but it is important for me to share in case I can prevent this experience for anyone else. In 2020 I came to Zel Skin for tattoo removal. I had a tattoo on the inside of my left forearm, unfortunately my body had a bad reaction to the red ink in the tattoo, and it was a source of ongoing discomfort that I wanted to remove. The clinic told me that they couldn't proceed with conventional laser tattoo removal, because of the risks associated with the red ink being dissolved into my bloodstream, potentially causing a worse reaction. Instead, in consultation with Dr. Brian Zelickson, I was advised to have the tattoo removed surgically in a series of procedures. The plan was to slice out a strip of skin from the middle of the tattoo (which was about 3.5 inches at its longest and 2 inches at its widest), stitch the skin back together, let the wound fully heal, and then repeat that procedure twice more until there was no more tattoo remaining. The first one of these surgeries went smoothly, and the recovery from that initial procedure gave me confidence in the clinic and Dr. Adam Schmitt. Unfortunately, that confidence was misplaced. After the initial surgery, Dr. Adam Schmitt recommended that we proceed with only one additional surgery, rather than following the initial plan. He thought he could remove the rest of the skin with tattoo ink on it with only one more procedure. This was appealing to me because it meant less surgery and faster healing. Unfortunately, this was overly ambitious and even dangerous, and Dr. Adam Schmitt struggled to stitch the skin back together after the tattoo was removed. I was sent home with a large open wound, and inadequate self-care instructions. A nurse that I know in my personal life was appalled that I was sent home in that condition and recommended home visiting wound care. When I asked what was going wrong and why the surgery hadn't proceeded as expected, Dr. Adam Schmitt told me that forearm skin is not as stretchy as other parts of the body. This seems like a fact that he should have taken into account before recommending we proceed with a second surgery removing more skin than originally planned. A couple weeks later, on the recommended timeline, I returned to Zel Skin in order for them to try to fully close the surgical wound they had left me with in the prior visit. Dr. Adam Schmitt continued to struggle to close the gap, and even resorted to removing fatty tissue in order to get the skin to close. This has left my left forearm with a noticeably different shape and size than my right forearm. Although the stitches were able to connect after this follow-up procedure, the skin was so tightly stretched that it began to cut off circulation to my hand. This necessitated reopening the wound in the same visit and restitching. The procedure took over four hours. It was clear Dr. Adam Schmitt and the secretary at ZelSkin were clearing his schedule as the procedure went on and on. When I got home, the wound continued to burst through the stitches and wouldn't stay closed. Please see the attached picture of the final healing, it shows where the stitches continued to burst, tear, and where new scar tissue was formed. It was at this point that my confidence in Zel Skin and Dr. Adam Schmitt was fully exhausted and I began to consult with a different dermatologist and medical team to help me physically recover from this experience and try to get my forearm into a presentable state for my wedding scheduled later that year. The skin was traumatized and flaring up accordingly. This timeline would not have been a concern if not for the disastrous results from Dr. Adam Schmitt's irresponsible approach to my tattoo removal. Later, in reviewing my patient records, I noticed that Zel Skin never submitted costs of the second surgery to my insurance carrier. To me this indicates that they knew that they made a serious mistake in implementing these procedures (which they would not admit to me directly), and didn't want any details leaving their clinic. The records are vague all over actually. Going into this process, I was fully aware that there would be some level of scarring after the tattoo removal was completed. However, the botched surgery, poor judgment by Dr. Adam Schmitt, and Zel Skin's efforts to minimize my concerns led to multiple painful surgeries, unnecessary levels of trauma, and excessive scarring (including the changed shape of my forearm, read more

Bad experience regently. Took 2-3 months to get in for a Botox and filler appointment, the call center often does not pick up or return calls for days, and the opportunity to book online is nonexistent, the esthetician advised me that if we went with an alternate brand, it would be a savings for me. when I was ready to pay, I was told the total was $2500, more than double what I've ever paid for an appointment with Zel in 16 years as a regular client. whew! that was not the "savings" I was expecting. finally I let her know i was badly bruised after over a week. I did not receive a response. it was a good run at Zel, but the place isn't what it used to be. Better service and transparent pricing offered right down the street. I'm done. read more

From Botox to filler I have noticed in the past year a dramatic increase in what is recommended. All the recommendations are toward the more expensive options. It has been disturbing and I won't return. Please seek out an alternative provider. I recommend Rachel Dahlen who can be reached at 952.222.8338. What's up with their good reviews in here? I was quite excited to try out this Clinic but they can't give me an estimation cost on the specific one procedure that I'm interested in? Of all 5 different skin clinics I went to they all gave me an estimation cost even ones that require consultation. I have to go to their consultation to know the cost, I don't want to go and waste my time by not knowing upfront how much I'm paying or only to go home and not get it done. Maybe this is a good clinic once you get to pass their hogwarts call and then you can enjoy the garden and that's why they got a lot of good reviews? The front desk is just okay- seems disinterested to their customer. It took 6 calls to finally answer me, in the end. Don't plan on calling them back. read more

Make no mistake this IS the most expensive place in town. They charge a lot because they are in Edina and they can but it's more than just price gouging, they have a very large variety of high quality lasers to take care of your needs. The big negative with this place is they simply don't want or need your business. If you call to talk to someone you're going to spend three or four minutes listening to an absolutely horrible voicemail message and pressing options and then after that have to leave a voicemail and won't hear back from them for at least a day or maybe two. They have no e-mail address or easy way to contact them. Are they good at what they do, yes. Are they way over priced and does their customer service and user experience suck YES very much so. read more

After receiving horrible customer service at Dermatology Specialists of Edina and being a patient of at least 7 years I decided to branch out and find other options. WOW! I found Zel Skin and Laser and in particular Dr. Mary Meighan. They did not dissapoint. From the time I walked in the front door, I was warmly welcomed and it just got better from there. Her assistant was very thorough and pleasant. When it was time for Dr. Meighan to see me, she greeted me like I was her only patient. She addressed my concerns and said she would check with her pathologist and call me after she spoke to them. She gave me a time limit of 2 days. She called me herself in exactly 2 days. I have reccomended my husband to her and will continue to refer to this clinic and Dr. Very pleasant experience. I am scheduled to go back in January. I don't know who I saw since they didn't introduce themselves. The doctor was an in-and-out type. No chitchat, no patient education, no solicitation of questions. I did ask one question and got a one word answer. I was there for medical derm and the doctor obviously had more important patients. I don't even know what I had since it is not written down anywhere so I am trying to figure it out by google. But I will go back since it is hard to get an appointment anywhere else. read more

I went to the Plymouth, MN location to inquire about having a few cysts on my head removed. I met briefly with doctor Biglow and her assistant. She looked at them and said "I can see why you want them removed". She proceeded to measure the large one and even though they were all different sizes, marked them as that same size. I left without a cost. She gave me some insurance codes. I didn't hear back so I called and they responded a day or two later saying they needed my birthdate to give me a cost. I called and gave that and said I would hear back. Days later I called and reached someone who gave me a price of $1,200 to remove two, and another $1,200 to remove the other two at a separate time. I shared I wanted to get it done by year end. Still no follow up from them and I thought the price was high considering they were not all the same size being part of it. Then in January I receive a bill for $94. I called the billing, they said they have nothing to do with the charges and would call the office and have them get back to me, as I thought the charge was high based on the service I didn't receive. I left a voicemail for the office manager Andrea on 1/8/21 and heard back on 1/12/21. I shared my experience to date and she thought the costs were high and incorrect and also would address the invoice I received and get back to me. I heard nothing back and left a voicemail on 1/22/21 and no return call. It's now February 2021 and still nothing. Very disappointed. I really wanted to get this taken care of and now I'll have to go somewhere else and start all over and pay another office visit I assume. read more

Ah, if I'd only known then what I know now, my skin would look like a 20 year old. Ah, who the hell am I kidding? I don't regret any of the nicotine, alcohol, late-night, dehydrating fun I had for much of my "single" life. Not one damn bit. I DO regret not plopping down dough and investing in creams, serums, and exfoliants earlier though. Yes, I'm totally superficial. And I love the easy way out. Shoot me. Now I look at my skin and ponder each line and curse every adult zit I get. Uh, what's up with adult acne, btw? I saw Brooke Moss today for my first skin check ever. In an obviously vulnerable and uncomfortable situation, she was far from personable - making me feel even more uncomfortable. I felt shamed for how my skin looked as well as for my skin care regimen. I am a healthcare professional myself, and I can say first hand that I did not feel the kindness and care from her that every patient should feel. Although the rest of the staff were wonderful, my experience was ruined. I will not be returning to Zel Skin Edina, and unfortunately I cannot recommend this provider to others. read more

I arrived for my scheduled consultation for laser hair removal treatment. The lady Katie who was near the front desk at my checkin, comes out again and assumes that the other patient was me, because my name isn't a common black name. She apologizes for that. Katie took me to a consult room and asked what brings you in. I say I'm interested in laser hair removal. I told her I had it done before but they used IPL not laser so it wasn't very effective. She asked me what area I am interested in using the laser. I show my abdomen area. She says "yeah so the lasers here are too strong for 'darker' skin tones, I'm sorry". I responded, "all my research has stated the stronger the laser is the more effective on darker skin (i.e the NdYag)". She said the complete opposite of every research paper I read and clinic I called. This conversation happened in about two minutes. TATTOO REMOVAL OK, I never even had the actual procedure done here, but 2 stars because I am utterly baffled at their prices. I get that it's Edina and it's a generally classy set-up, but sweet Satan, the tattoo removal prices couldn't be more unfair... They quoted me over $400 PER SESSION (for about 20 sessions) to remove a small black script tattoo on my upper back... Northeast Tattoo and Laser quoted me $80 per session for the same amount of sessions... They even use the same laser... Literally that's over $8,000+ vs $1,600. Not only that, but I've had my first 13 sessions at Northeast done, great results, and now and they even brought the price down to $50 a session after my first ten. so I'll be paying something like $1300 over the course of 3 years/20 sessions instead of $8-9K. I saw Dr. Erin Sellinger yesterday to have seborrheic keratosis removed from my arm. I needed to be numbed up for it. She had the lightest touch, absolutely wonderful. Nothing hurt, the whole procedure was very fast, and my arm feels fine today. I was really nervous it would be a painful experience or that they would be unkind to me. I received excellent care at Zel Skin and Laser Specialists. I had cherry angiomas on my body and broken veins on my nose for a long time. I thought I was stuck with them, but recently my Botox specialist recommended Zel Skin Care and Laser Specialists in Edina. I'm so glad she did! I came in for a consult, and Dr. Zellickson was able to treat me the same day. Almost all of my cherry hemangiomas disappeared on the first treatment, and it went very quickly! On my second visit for a few angiomas that needed a second treatment, I decided to have the little blue veins on my nose treated via laser as well. Nurse Teresa Z. produced a quote for me within minutes. We proceeded to the operating room, where Dr. Zellickson zapped the offending areas in just a few minutes. Nurse Teresa was a calming influence during the entire procedure. She was so friendly and professional that I felt right at home. She went above and beyond, and deserves kudos! I felt like I was in good hands with both Dr. Z and Teresa. I really appreciate the competence, efficiency, friendliness, and professionalism of both Dr. Z. and nurse Teresa. They did a great job. Dr.Brian Zellihson has the most advanced lasers in the county. I have been to all three of his clinics. I have visited the 50th and France office for cosmetic laser treatments for many years. I,m a 60 year old man. Brian Z. is in the top five dermatologists in the country.I have been everywhere. Dr.Z has made me look 40 years old.His staff is top shelf. Received the best care anywhere in nation at Zel skin care in Edina. I had a facial at a hair salon on Hennepin ave near 31 first street,my skin was burnt with some type of acid peel. Do not go to this place if you're looking for a true dermatologist, not a beauty salon. I went to the downtown Minneapolis office to get three moles removed and none of them were removed completely. After the scars have partially healed, I could see part of the moles still there for all three. I am astonished how a simple procedure like this could not be performed properly by an MD! I have been purchasing products form Zel Skin and Laser for several years so when I needed some sun/age spots removed from my face I setup an appointment. At the initial appointment the Physicians Assistant (PA) tried to get me to use a topical prescribed ointment instead of using the Liquid Nitrogen treatment I've received elsewhere. For me the topical ointments don't work so I elected to for the Liquid Nitrogen which I know has worked the last 20 years. The procedure didn't work. There wasn't any scabbing which is normal for this type of procedure. The skin looked the same as when I first walked in the door. At the followup appointment (which is not included in the price of the procedure and I wasn't informed there would be an additional charge) the PA said she went as deep with the Liquid Nitrogen as she felt was warranted. Again she asked me multiple times (at both the initial and follow appointments) to take the prescription so at the followup appointment I finally took the prescription to get her off my back. Also, the PA said if I wanted another Liquid Nitrogen treatment I would have to pay another $200. Walking out to my car after the followup appointment I felt the PA didn't go deep enough with the Liquid Nitrogen treatment because that was her plan. My final bill will be be somewhere between $350 to $450 and I still need to setup another appointment with someone else to have the spots on my face removed. Most of the time you're consulting with his assistants and not the actual provider and when I had some more questions, she didn't bother to go and ask the dermatologist rather she just answered it as if she has background training in the field. When Dr. Zelickson came in, he seemed just a little careless and cold in my opinion. He's knowledgeable but just seemed a little rude. Went to Zel to get KyBella done, and was very disappointed with the results, or can I say "no" results! I was told I needed 2 treatments for visible results...When I went into see the doctor for my follow up, after 2 injections, he basically brushed me off and said that KyBella was not for me. So basically KyBella was good for me when they took my money, but after zero results they basically said "too bad so sad"!!! So my advice is to get a second opinion, and not from them!! I just finished my third and final treatment for my birthmark on my chest and I have to say I could not be more impressed! Dr. Zelickson and his staff are so helpful, knowledgeable and friendly every time I have been there. After exploring options of what could be done for my birthmark for years, I am beyond thrilled to say I have found somewhere that was able to treat it effectively and efficiently. They are super nice and friendly but I had Fraxel laser for $400 which didn't do a thing and I still have all the tiny little red spider veins around my nose what a waste of money. Also had a big pre-cancerous freckle spot sprayed with liquid nitro on my cheek and it's still there and I think it may even look worse..ugh. And finally I did one vial of Kybella under my chin for a wopping $800 (one vial) and the before and after pictures look the same ! Maybe it's me or maybe it's them but I'm going to probably cut my ties for any future treatments. When you spend this kind of money you want to see RESULTS ! I give A-OK but I've never had laser or Kybella anywhere else. Botox/Dysport department is fine also. read more

Horrible place, extremely expensive and I got no results! I went to Zel Skin for rosacea laser treatment on my face. Dr Zel said it would take about 3 visits. The procedure was very expensive, over $600. I asked if I needed more than 3 visits could we lower the price, he said yes there can be a price break after 4. I called to setup my 4th visit and he wouldn't talk to me. He had one of his receptionist, who was very rude, say he never said that. I looked into different options and found out that Skin Rejuvenation Clinic would do the laser treatment for $150 AND that Zel Skin wasn't even using the right laser!!! Horrible waste of money and time try Skin Rejuvenation Clinic I saw immediate results from them. read more

I have been to over six dermatologists for acne over the last five years. Dr. Zelickson and his staff blew me away. He and his nurse sat with me and listened to my whole history, suggested new treatment options (where other doctors had just given up) and when it came to pay, didn't charge me because they offer free consultations.
