I've been a Zipcar member for years, and this was my first truly disappointing experience. We reserved a vehicle two minutes from our home in Battery Park. Just 30 minutes before pickup, Zipcar reassigned the reservation to the Lower East Side. With virtually no notice, we had no practical choice but to take Lyfts to pick up and return from the replacement location, costing us about $70 out of pocket. I contacted customer support, provided both receipts, and explained that these expenses were incurred solely because Zipcar changed the pickup location at the last minute. The representatives were polite and acknowledged the inconvenience, but Zipcar declined to reimburse the documented costs or provide an equivalent account credit, offering only a 30-minute driving credit. Things happen, and I understand that vehicles occasionally become unavailable. My disappointment is how the situation was handled. If Zipcar's operational change directly causes a customer's expenses with almost no notice, I believe the company should make that customer whole. We booked a Zipcar through our employers membership for a weekend trip. They changed the car on us, fine, but on the day of the trip i couldnt login to my account. I tried resetting the password and couldnt get an email, kept saying error on their part. I called customer service and tech support couldnt make it work, they manually sent an email link but i got error message when trying to change my password. They said they would create a ticket for 2-3 business days. We complained and they gave us a refund. After the refund, 30 min later suddenly i could reset my password. I look up for our old car its not available and other cars are 1.5x the cost. We booked a last minute car with Turo. Rented a car to go to Fire Island. We had difficulty starting the car when we got it because apparently the key had a low battery. Went to the beach, and when it was time to leave, the car wouldn't start again- this time 2 hours from home. The car kept telling us to move the key closer, but the key was hidden, and customer support refused to tell us where it was so we could start the car. The car had to be towed, and we had to figure out a way to get home 2 hours later and have yet to be reimbursed. read more

Car reservations are unreliable and their attempt to rebook is usually to a car miles away and of a different size, almost always requiring a call and an argument to get it corrected. To this day, I have not been told what rule I supposedly violated, what information was relied upon, or why my account was terminated. Actually evil, I reserved a car to move right outside my building, they changed the reservation to several blocks away (not what I wanted to do with stuff, obviously). I went to pick it up, completely dead, no key fob anywhere, wouldn't start. I carried only a mattress to load, thank goodness I didn't bring a full cart down the hill in 90 degree heat. They were rude on the phone when I said their car didnt start, like it's my problem, not to detention the interior REEKED of pot, french fries all over, outside had visible rust and damage. They offered me to walk to a "close" vehicle TWENTY BLOCKS away. I arranged childcare to move, hundreds of dollars of childcare money and my time and couldn't even get the task done. I am filing a formal complaint regarding my recent Zipcar rental. During my reservation, the right-side tire continuously lost air, making the vehicle unsafe and unreliable to drive. To try to continue my trip, I spent approximately $60 of my own money to replace the tire. Despite this expense, I was later instructed by Zipcar to return the vehicle. After returning the car, I was informed that I would only receive a partial refund for the rental. As a result, I lost money in several ways: I paid for a rental vehicle that I could not properly use, I spent $60 out of pocket on the tire, and I lost income because I was unable to drive and complete my work. I am requesting reimbursement for the $60 I spent on the tire, along with a full refund for the unusable portion of my rental. I believe it is unfair that I should bear the financial burden of a vehicle that had a mechanical issue beyond my control. I was fined 3 months after cancelling my membership for alleged "smoking" 5-10 min before my ride ended. I was offended and upset the representative wouldn't even hear me out... Your car fleet has declined and I have been in many of zip cars that had bad scent and were dirty. Zip Car is now owned by Avis but it's run like a shitty start-up. Stay away! I extended my rental return time for a few hours on the zipcar website, but they locked my car at the original return time. I politely told customer service I had extended it on the site. They chastised me, and in the most condescending manner told me it had to be done on the app and using the website doesn't actually extend the rental time - even though the website request went through and I had received a confirmation e-mail. I was later told I was being terminated from the zipcar community for bad behavior and could no longer use their service. Despicable customer service and zero accountability This morning I arrived five minutes early for my Zipcar reservation only to find another Zipcar blocking mine in the garage. The attendant couldn't move it because he didn't have the access card. I called Zipcar immediately and spoke with Pamela, who flatly said there was nothing she could do. Really? They can unlock cars remotely -- the attendant could have moved it in seconds -- but she simply refused to help. When I asked for a supervisor, none was available (of course). Zipcar is extremely strict when it comes to charging me for a late return -- $100 for being five minutes late -- yet takes zero responsibility when the problem is their fault. Horrible company. I used to enjoy it around 2015-2020. Once the pandemic hit, they've have markedly gone down. Very expensive and penalties are astronomical. Cars are dirty, often smell of cigarettes or weed, poorly maintained and no accountability from management or the company. This was an extremely upsetting and traumatic experience for us. To break down exactly what happened, here is a comprehensive chronology: We rented the Zipcar at 7pm and drove across the George Washington Bridge to get groceries. We also brought our dog with us because we have a puppy and the rescue agency said he should not be left alone. After shopping, we return to the car at approximately 8:20. Mind you, our drop off time was 9pm and it was an approximately 27-30 minute drive, so we planned the length of our shopping trip to ensure we would drop it off at the correct time. What ensued from this point forward was nothing short of emotional trauma. The car would not start, as it told us the battery was dead. We asked numerous people in the parking lot with extra batteries to help us, but it was an older model of car that they were not familiar with and were unable to successfully do so. We then called ZipCar and they agreed to send a maintenance person to look at it.  When he arrives, he was able to successfully jumpstart it. However, our problems were just getting started (keep in mind that it is nearly 11pm at night and in a dark area). We are unable to get inside our car, as the key is connected to my husband's phone. The most upsetting part is that our dog is inside the car with no air conditioning and it is 80 degrees Fahrenheit outside and much hotter inside. We can see him panting and whimpering. At this point, it is a matter of life and death for our dog before he overheats. We call ZipCar again and the representative is extremely abusive to me and my husband, telling us that there is absolutely nothing he can do and he's sorry about our dog. I reiterate to him the seriousness of the situation, but he just says, over-and-over in a very nonplussed, uncompassionate tone that there is nothing he can do except call a tow truck. Then, he starts blaming us, saying this whole situation is our fault because we should have made it back on time. When I explain to him we were leaving at 8:20pm to make it back, he keeps reiterating that it is still our fault. I then ask him how we are supposed to get back to our home, which is a 30-minute drive away. He tells us we need to take public transportation. It is 10:30pm at night in North Bergen, NJ, and there are no buses running. Couple that with the fact that we have twelve bags full of groceries (a majority of which are perishables like milk, cheese, meat, and seafood) and a dog, and public transportation would not even be an option regardless. At this point, it's getting later and later in a darkened area with little-to-no-people. I ask him when the tow truck will come, and he says 45-to-60 minutes. I ask for a tracking number for the tow truck so we can contact him if need be, as our phones are both dying and all the shops are closed where we could buy a charger. He says he cannot provide me with a tracking number and that we will just have to wait. So, we wait 2 hours, TWO HOURS, and the truck never comes. We realize that we have been lied to. At this point, the meat is starting to smell because of the heat and our dog is whimpering and getting restless. We are also concerned for our safety. So, we call Zipcar and tell them that the representative lied to us, a tow truck was never called, and that we had been waiting for two hours. He tells us to take pictures of our car and that we can leave via Uber. We then call an Uber, and the driver comes. Even though we had entered our address initially, he then tells us, sorry, he can't go to New York. Uber then charges us a cancellation fee and we have to take a Lyft back to our home only to find that our perishables had gone bad.  As reiterated before in the initial paragraph, we are requesting a full compensation for the amount of our trip, the Lyft back, and the perishables that spoiled. read more

Zipcar is notorious for its poor-quality vehicles. Renting a car with bald tires, low coolant, and cleaning issues is a reckless gamble that could endanger your family's safety. I experienced this firsthand on New Year's Eve. Despite the car's poor condition, which included bad tires, low coolant, and cleaning issues, it was the best car I've rented in years from Zipcar before they got rid of the GLC and the Volvos. All it needed was a few repairs and maintenance. Zipcar reassured me that they would take care of the issues, and I even saw the car being taken off for a few days, which made me believe they were listening to my concerns when I first rented it. Two weeks later, I saw the car available again. I rented it today and to my surprise, it was still in the same condition that it was in on New Year's. Still a gash in tire no coolant or wiper fluid. This was infuriating after I had called this morning to remake sure it had been worked on. It's absurd that I have to inspect cars before renting them, but I do. I usually schedule a car with extra hours and take the time to look at other Zipcar cars in different locations once a month to identify potential issues. This way, if an issue arises when I rent a car, I know which Zipcars are more likely to be in better condition and work better. It's frustrating that I have to pay to inspect cars that might be in bad shape the next day to have a backup plan. However, if you've driven with Zipcar long enough, you know that they can have problems that will leave you stranded and have to choose a different vehicle that can come with no solutions but more problems than the original car you rented. They switched me out one day from one car to 8 other cars in a day. I eventually canceled my reservation for that day. These pictures are from today. I called Zipcar earlier before booking, as it's not fair to assume that the car was fixed when I see it's still in poor condition. Zipcar lied to me, claiming that the car was fixed during its maintenance block. They took it down, but nothing was fixed, cleaned, or even coolant or windshield wiper fluid was added. Today, I encountered a frustrating situation at a Zipcar location. The car I chose to use had a damaged tire and a gash on it, which was already evident when I arrived at the car around 1:45 PM. Despite the cold weather and my desire to avoid reopening the car with these issues, I decided to stay inside and make a call. After waiting for three calls, I finally reached someone who opened the car for me at 2:30 PM. However, the problem persisted, and I was moved to another car. Honestly, I was eager to use the original car because I knew it was mechanically sound and only needed new tires. I even offered to purchase new tires, provided they reimbursed me and would take the car for coolant at a nearby garage. Unfortunately, the company refused to reimburse my cab fare for the new car and new tires if I went to get them fixed. They only offered a 30-minute credit. This wasted my entire day, forcing me to cancel my meeting in Philadelphia. To make matters worse, I now have the new car after paying another $25 cab ride to S different location. To my dismay, the new car has its own set of issues, including a damaged steering wheel column and a non-functional horn. As I was driving home, I discovered these problems. After fighting with customer service, I was unable to get that fee refunded, no 24-hour grace period or anything. I rented my first Zipcar in New York last weekend, when I needed a car to drive up to the Hudson Valley. Several weeks in advance, I reserved the car, in the Chinatown area. When I got to the car that morning, I was able to get into the car using the app, but there weren't keys inside the car. I looked everywhere. So I called the help line on the app. The Zipcar employee asked me to a look in a few places, but I still couldn't find the keys. So she offered to change my reservation and assign me another car. I said sure. Then when I looked at the new reservation, I noticed it was in Williamsburg (it was the nearest car available at the time). I kind of waffled about whether I still wanted it, because I really didn't want to go to Williamsburg and - was going to make me really behind schedule and I was going to have to get a Lyft over to the car. At that point, the employee said that I could refunded for the expense of the rideshare. She told me she would send me an email, and I should reply to that email with the receipt for the rideshare and I would get it refunded. I was able to get the second car and was about an hour behind schedule for the day. Could have been worse. But when I replied to my email with my receipt for the rideshare, I was told: "Zipcar's policy does not cover reimbursement for ride-share expenses incurred when traveling from one Zipcar location to another." This amazed me, because it was their own employee who had brought it up to me initially; I didn't ask for the refund, she said they would cover it without my asking. They added thirty minutes of driving credit to my account since they refused to refund me for the rideshare, but since I may never use Zipcar again after this experience, I may never use it. This was a really bad customer service experience, one of my worst in recent memory. And given that Zipcar rentals are not inexpensive and they have much more competition than they used to, I'll likely try to avoid them in the future. read more

I reserved a Zipcar near my house -- on 115th St. -- for a 2-day reservation to go to a friend's wedding in upstate NY - 1 month in advance. 10 days or so later the reservation updates to show I got a different car. I didn't look closely because I had a lot on my plate and assumed the car was at the same location. When I looked this morning -- they had changed the location to Newark!! When I called to fix it the customer service rep could only offer me cars that were nearly a mile from my house (walking with luggage, friends meeting me...). The rep was arguing with me. I asked to speak to someone else and he told me to hang up and call back - I would get someone else. Seriously? I did it and ultimately got a crappy location far from my house and a $25 credit for my inconvenience. Is there anyone in at Zipcar who is accountable for customer experience? It is NOT GOOD. I have occasionally continued to rent from Zipcar despite other bad past experiences because there are cars close to my house. But this was the last time. There has got to be something better. Conclusion, it's not the same Zip car quality. Sure the trademark ownership is the same, but now they should call it: StripCar, because they've stripped down customer service. But this is capitalism, start making money with original customers, then once you're bigger, cut back on services, cut back on quality then call the original customers "legacy customers". The convenience at first was sometimes How cheap it was sometimes. It was sometimes cheaper just to get a car for 2 hours, rather than take a cab back-and-forth to a couple of places. And they had plenty of cars and plenty of locations to make it convenient to access them. However, they have so many issues with their service. In general, that the inconveniences caused by all their issues actually wound up, costing me more time and money in the end. Their customer service is absolutely horrible. In more than a year of using their service and calling customer service. Honestly, at least every other time I rented a vehicle. I only encountered one agent that was decent, polite and respectful. Many of their agents are rude and don't even understand their own policies and procedures. I've had the phone hung up on me, intentionally after the agent made a rude comment. That actually happened quite a few times. And to have this experience after being on hold for quite some time, because certain hours, they are very busy, and it's not like you're going to get through immediately. It's very frustrating. But if their poor customer service isn't enough for you, so think twice, the issues they have with their cars are overwhelming. I've arrived at many locations and the car that I had book was not present. Often I had to be changed into another car that was further away and more difficult to get to. I have had to locate cars that they sent me to that were not I parked at the location where they were supposed to be, and they were blocks away parked somewhere else that wasn't a zip car parking area. Some locations are outright dangerous. I actually got assaulted over a parking spot that I was trying to get right out of at a zip car location that was being blocked. The person blocking me assaulted me. I reported this to zip car. They did nothing. They still have cars at that location, and nothing has changed. Some locations are very dark and in neighborhoods with high crime rates, if you know what I mean. The maintenance issues with these cars are crazy too. I had to have a car toold.Well, I was at work when I needed this vehicle from my work commute, because the car wouldn't even start when I tried to leave. I've arrived at locations with tires completely flat. I've gotten into cars that had issues with brakes. And every time there's some issue like this, it's not a simple thing for them to compensate you. Their idea was to move you to another vehicle. Not always convenient to get to not always a vehicle that you want. And sometimes they move you from one vehicle to another, and the second vehicle has an issue. You never really get compensated for your loss of time. Occasionally, they'll offer to extend it by 30 minutes but I have sometimes wasted up to an hour and a half on issues related to zip cars, maintenance problems. The cars are often it's terribly dirty and smell. It's obvious that people smoke in most cars. If you're a non smoker, you'll realize it right away. So, needless to sing, after spending all that money supposedly for more convenience, I realize I was often or more often than not inconvenienced. Zipcar was only useful for a few months, and then it became increasingly challenging to book and request cars from reliable locations and receive affordable estimates for rental. Their prices skyrocketed as the business grew, and the customer service is horrible. They purposefully do not allow you to speak directly to Zipcar employees that can help you fix issues with your account. My account was locked due to a technical issue, and when trying to rectify it I was hung up on by customer service. The support system only responds to you via email after over 7 business days and are not helpful in solving issues in under a month (they've let me know because of their technical issue it would take 4-5 weeks to find a solution). read more
