To make it as simple and as objective as possible. The place stopped evolving. It probably was a hit one day and the goal of many for a nice meal.. But according to what I saw ( a table full of orders) they lost it.. They serve a variety of tradional bavarian dishes and some general famous ones that you will find in every beer restaurant. The dishes we had were just dreadful.. The food was Swimming in sauce (even if tradionaly there should be a LITTLE sauce). So imagine how it looked like if there were 3 (for the meat/botatos/mushrooms) different sauces in the same dish. To have a better understanding check the pictures.. Only 2 of us finished their dishes. I gave my dish to my wife because she couldn't eat hers. The only good thing they served were the drinks. Another bad point: the cleaning lady at the door of the rest room, who was chasing every costumers to pay/ entrance. She shouted and sweared (in German) at the tourists, who clearly had no idea what she was saying. I know that the cleaning lady idea is an old one and all the restaurants in the old days had it. But it's unnecessary.. Summary: don't waste your money or mood there. I'm sure you will find a better place regarding taste and quality that is worth of your time and money. PS: i do wish for them to level up and realize that time has changed. read more

Good place for a leisurely afternoon beer and traditional Bavarian lunch. I had the boiled pig knuckle, which was salty and enormous, with sauerkraut and mashed potaytoes. Went here on a recent trip & loved it! Good food, good drinks, nice loud Bavarian atmosphere & we even got the grumpy-looking woman who served us to smile! We asked the opinion of a very nice German couple exiting the place if it was worth eating in & they both said yes. Thanks much, whomever you guys are! I had the Allgauer Amteller which was delicious! Homemade meat ravioli, mini-meatballs, Egg noodles and chanterelles. We were there when the buildup to the big Munich vs Arsenal football game was happening & the place was packed mostly with Munich fans in red & white. Made for a rollicking fun time -- VERY loud in there but it added to the ambiance. You know you're in a German pub when you see a waiter walk by holding about 4 HUGE liter mugs in EACH hand! My friend and I arrived in Munich towards the tail end of Oktoberfest. We decided we needed to eat in a standard Bavarian-fare beer hall so we stumbled upon this place. It was about 9:00PM on a Sunday night, and this place was still open and fairly packed. Then again, a lot of other places were closed, so I'm assuming it was crowded because there weren't many other choices to go to. This place is pretty damn big. We weaved through a few benches in order to be seated. I decided to get the dumpling and mushrooms dish (I don't remember the name of the dish exactly). It was HUGE. My friend got a beef and potato dish, which also came with a side of beet slaw and a dumpling as well. He was pretty pleased with his dish as was I. I've been to Hofbrauhaus before during my first trip to Munich. I would say these 2 places are about the same in terms of costs, service, and quality. Yes, the place was pretty packed with tourists. Yes, it was cheesy. If you're in Munich, though, you expect to see things like this. Might as well go in and enjoy the cheesiness of it all as well as kicking back and enjoy a half liter of beer while you're at it. read more

So first of all, the beer is AMAZING. You can't go wrong with Augustiner. Drinking Augustiner is one of the best experiences in life. That aside, be careful about ordering food here. I decided to order something safe and go with the Schnitzel. It wasn't bad, but just very basic. It seemed like something they microwaved. It wasn't too expensive but still not a good value. Don't expect much special attention from the staff either, the place is always packed. All in all, if you want a great beer and something a bit more authentic than the Hofbrauhaus, go here. The clientele is about half German and half tourist compared to almost 0% German at the Hofbrau. Be wary about the food though. read more

Just got back from a big dinner, and I'm stuffed. They have an English menu and English speaking waiters, which makes it an easier place to navigate. My waiter recommended the pork shank, dumpling and slaw salad, which he said you must try if you want arepresentative taste of Bavarian food. So I did and it was good, and filling - they don't cheat you here. However, I preceded my main course with Asparagus soup which, (I've never had it before), was delicious. Seriously, to die for. Oh, and the place cost wise is a solid 2 - I had the soup, a full dinner and 2 huge beers for 27.55 euros. Take the beers out and it's 19.85 - not bad. When we decided to stop and eat at this touristy place I thought it was going to be bad because it looks like a tourist trap but no! What a nice surprise! The food was delicious and the service and prices were pretty good too! I had the half chicken and fries (tasty!!!) and hubby had some German white sausage and goulash soup, we had a pretzel too with their delicious home made honey ground mustard and I don't even like pretzels lol but this one was actually good and fresh! They have seating at a garden inside their building, but of course the best way to go is to seat outside and people watch! There was a full band playing at the street in front of the restaurant too, a good band! With 2 cellos, one piano! One flute and one violin, they were playing classical songs like the nutcracker. Skip the Hofbrau Haus & get a more authentic, better priced, and far better cooked meal here. The beer is, naturally, excellent. The menu is quite extensive & the menu can be requested in international form, with English, Italian, etc. If you're not up for Weißwurst, try the Wurstsalat for a nice change of pace - mit Käse naturally... Service is fast, and there are plenty of seats. But be prepared to share a table - it's customary & expected. On the upside, get much faster service!! read more

Made me very uncomfortable when i walked in with another couple, and the waitress immediately greeted them and handed menus, but then took a tea break while staring right towards me and finally almost threw a menu to me after 5 minutes. Came here for our last meal in Germany and like any other beer hall in Munich, there were a good amount of space and people there. We took a seat near the middle and were told that we could have the pretzels in the basket. Keep in mind, there was another couple who had been there finishing up their meal and only 3 pretzels left in the basket. We each had one (2 total) and ordered 2 steins, spaetzle and schnitzel for dinner. Everything was fine and the waitress seemed nice. We asked for the bill and noticed they charged us for 4 pretzels, which seemed pretty sneaky, so they adjusted it. And then they asked for tip so I said 4 euros, and she tried to charge us 8 euros, thinking I was going to give 4 euros each...like what?? Overall, the food was tasty and the beer was good. It was not the best experience but not the worst either, so solid 3 stars. read more

I love this place. I especially love their dunkel bier, and thus stopped by numerous times during my recent visit to Munich. Augustiner is a beer that even the locals love. And, while any bierhalle close to Marienplatz will have a bit of a touristy vibe, this one will also have plenty of Germans among its patrons. There are two sides to this Augustiner - the restaurant and the bierhalle. If you want rowdy and a good beer, visit the bierhalle. On one of our visits this last trip, it was filled with many fussball fans having a great time. If you want a quieter, but yet enjoyable experience, go with the restaurant and also order yourself some tasty food. Seating is shared, so if there's not a host/hostess when you arrive just wander around until you find some empty seats at a table and then get to know your dining companions. Foodwise, you really can't go wrong with the wurst sampler platter. You get a variety of sausages (yum!), some sauerkraut, and some of the best mashed potatoes I've ever had. Seriously, I could just order those mashed potatoes and be a happy, happy girl! The cheese platter is also worth ordering, especially since it includes the odd, yet delicious Bavarian spreadable cheese. But, in the end, I will keep coming back for the dunkel bier. "Amazing" experience here. The waiter who dressed like a supervisor assigned us to an empty table and as soon as he left, another waitress came to us asking us to leave that table to share another table with a group of three, when I argued that I had been waiting for a while thus got that table, she said "it's MY table." Ok well, it's just the first part. After I finished up my shank, which I had overestimated. Another waiter who served us brought the check, asking me how many pretzels I had just now, I answered two but he queried me with a bitchy face saying "are you sure?" Holly Molly he didn't even replace the pretzel basket after the previous customer left, how the heck did he know how many pretzels there were in the basket, btw the pretzels tasted like overnight pizza. Even though I left him 10 percent tips since he asked for it. P.S. I heard that their toilet charged my friend 50 cents for usage. read more

Is Augustiner touristy? Of course. It's right in the middle of the touristy old town. But at least it is less touristy and MUCH less of a shitshow than Hofbrauhaus. We went here on our first night in Germany, and it was the perfect "traditional" old place to try some sausage and delicious vinegar-based German potato salad. Enjoy. read more

I stumbled on this place as I was walking through the neighborhood and it looked inviting so I went in and the place was packed. I had a hard time finding someplace to sit down (which is always a good sign with a German beer hall). The place was filled with just about everyone. There were the old locals, the young families with their kids, and some tourists (I was one) and several tables of young people who were just getting started on an evening of fun and alcohol. My waitress came over quickly and took my order. The beer was very good. (I was told by a local who sat next to me on the plane to look for Augustiner beer as he thought it was the best in Munich). I ordered a Pork Shank that was very, very good. Crunchy on the outside and sweet and tender on the inside. Very well done. This establishment has two sides, a restaurant and a beer hall. I went into the beer hall and I think that I will try the restaurant the next time as they had different items on the menu. Very good meal. I will definitely stop here again the next time I'm headed through Munich - which is going to be next week actually. read more

Augustiner is the best beer in Munich, and their local competition is fierce. We didn't know about their large Biergarten, but we came across their restaurant one afternoon exploring the central district on foot. Seating was traditional Bierhall, with bench-style picnic tables. The food was great and the beer was to die for. If I had known that it wasn't largely exported, I would have drank a lot more that afternoon!! Skip the Hofbrauhaus, where they rip off tourists, and enjoy a quieter meal and better beer. read more

I have been to only 3 beer gardens in Munich and this was by far the best. I had a veal meatball with mushroom cream sauce and it was delicious. I'm a shandy drinker and loved it. The beer is good (Edelstoff!!! Best beer in town), but the glasses often not correctly filled. The food is really mediocre and even for a restaurant serving hundreds of people per night (it's huge) it could be much better. The beer is simply the best. They donate a portion of the profit to charity so that makes it even more attractive. The food and service were quite nice and everything was superior to the nearby Hoffbrau Haus. It was less hectic and far prettier. Three stars is about right. The service is very friendly, which is not that common at the big beer halls. However, the beer is thin, especially for an American used to craft brews. They will charge you 1.10 euros per pretzel for a basket that they will put on your table without asking - 4.40 for the two of us was not much, but annoying. read more

Forget it! We had a totally disappointing experience. Stale Bretzen, a Schweinshaxe that tasted like cooked three days before and repeatedly re-heated, an Allgauer Alm dish where the Eiernudeln tasted like plastic and the sauce was some brownish water. JUST TERRIBLE! Never more ! read more
