Dr Murrell had two nurses to go over everything before the procedures and if I was a little younger, both of them would have to become my friends. Dr Murrell is cool and handsome, so beware...I heard the little mature woman in the private area next to me letting him know...Lol!!!! After my surgery the two nurses once again made me feel warm and relaxed, and then the doctor came out to greet me to let me know he had found nothing. LOOK ELSEWHERE. I almost lost my life. Please read this if you're considering care with Dr. Zuri A. Murrell. It's taken me a long time to share my experience because what I went through under Dr. Murrell's care was deeply traumatic. Writing this brings up PTSD, but I feel an obligation to speak up in the hope that it might protect others. Dr. Murrell initially came across as confident and smooth-talking, which is why I trusted him. I now deeply regret that decision. He told me he didn't accept insurance and required full payment upfront. I paid out of pocket using our savings. After surgery, I received a separate hospital bill for several hundred thousand dollars, including charges I was told would be covered. The bill was eventually waived, only after I required a second corrective surgery -- a possible indication that the hospital recognized something had gone wrong. I originally sought care for a bowel resection following a diverticulitis-related micro-perforation. Before the scheduled resection, Dr. Murrell performed a colonoscopy that perforated my colon and resulted in hospitalization for sepsis and peritonitis. I was placed on IV antibiotics via a PICC line for 3 weeks. During this time, Dr. Murrell left for vacation and was unreachable. The hospital ultimately had to intervene to adjust my care. I felt abandoned and seriously unwell. The resection surgery that followed was 10 hours long. I woke up in extreme pain. I was hospitalized for two weeks and left unable to stand. My blood pressure dropped dangerously low, and I was bruised black across my genital area. My mother, a nurse, raised concerns that were dismissed. I was discharged in a wheelchair -- still bleeding and barely able to function. The following two months were a nightmare. I could barely have bowel movements, even with 8-10 laxatives a day. I was in constant pain, using a cane, losing weight, unable to eat or sleep. ER imaging showed internal bleeding, 2 rectoceles, and a potential stricture -- all dismissed as "normal healing." Dr. Murrell said he'd only perform a follow-up if full payment was received upfront for another colonoscopy. I told his office I didn't trust him to do that again, but agreed to a free in-office sigmoidoscopy. He told me everything looked fine. I was back in the ER shortly after. An ER doctor later told me Dr. Murrell had insisted to their team that he was the "colorectal expert," and my concerns were dismissed accordingly. MRI and lab results were ignored. I was terrified and knew I was being denied care. My mother, still by my side and advocating as a medical professional, continued logging my symptoms. Even she was ignored, despite clear signs that my condition was deteriorating. During surgery, Dr. Murrell also told me he had done me a "favor" by detaching my uterus from the abdominal wall -- a decision never discussed with me beforehand. He said he had "hooked me up free of charge." That so-called favor led to my uterus collapsing and fusing to my bladder, causing severe chronic pain and urinary issues. I eventually had to undergo surgery to have it removed. In sheer desperation, I was forced to leave California because every ER I went to deferred to Dr. Murrell and dismissed me because he kept insisting I was ok. I had to get out of his reach just to find someone who would listen. Out-of-state, I was finally taken seriously. They performed an 11-hour surgery, where they found a severe stricture and necrotic bowel-- direct complications from the previous surgery. If I had stayed under Dr. Murrell's care, I would not be alive. I now live with long-term complications and physical deformity from what was supposed to be a healing procedure. The emotional, physical, and financial toll has been devastating. To Dr. Murrell, if you're reading this: Please listen to your patients. A good surgeon doesn't stop at the operating room. Your lack of follow-through, empathy, and accountability nearly cost me my life. Not everything is about money. Patient experience and safety matter. To others: Trust your instincts. Dr Murrell treated me for large internal hemorrhoids . I saw him about 4 or 5 times, each time receiving a shot in the area. 4 out of 5 of the shots were painless, until after I left his office. The pain kept getting more intense and continued all the time, day and night. When I called his office, I was told to make another appointment. I did that. Each time I came in, he gave me another shot. After I left, the pain got worse and never went away. The last time I went in to see him, he examined the area, said that it was very swollen and inflamed, and gave me another shot. This time, the shot hurt so badly that I screamed. He said that he was sorry, but that he had turned the needle. That was weeks ago. I can't sleep. The pain is day and night, and getting worse. I'll never go back there. I read his reviews. Seems like two thirds are positive, but one third of patient experiences are like mine, or worse. He's a crap shoot. If you want to gamble on your health, go there. read more

Not recommend Unprofessional and no personal treatment, we did not diagnose the problem properly and did not do proper treatment, after two treatments the situation only got worse, when I called to ask and consult the doctor the secretary told me if not helping you then do not come anymore. And this is even the doctor did not check me again. And did not talk to me. The main thing was that they took a lot of money from me. After Dr Sokol retired, he recommended Murrell in his office. The treatment was injections to stop me hemorrhoid bleeding that Dr Sokol handled seamlessly. The first two appointments, Murrell didn't check the records and gave me half Dr Sokol's dose and the bleeding continued. Finally, I firmly insisted that Murrell talk to Sokol, which he reluctantly did after first lying to me that he couldn't do so. I should have terminated him at this point but I'm soft heated. So I let him continue for another 3 months. Then, without any discussion and without any verbal or written authorization from me, he apparently performed a laser surgery. (I don't know that's the case because he didn't talk to Me during or after the procedure.) No local anesthetic, no warning. It was severely and disorientingly painful. (The way I'd imagine forceable anal rape would be.) Then he walked out without saying a word. In addition to violating medical ethics and normal procedure, he ripped things up inside me so that shortly thereafter I experienced an explosion of blood and feces. EMTs got me into the hospital where I continued to have similar explosions of blood and feces hourly until a competent surgeon repaired Murrell's damage. In the process, I lost 4 units of blood and my blood pressure dropped to 60/45 while my hemoglobin and platelets dropped almost off the scale. I don't know why Murrell behaved so unethically and incompetently but I theorize that he was running late and wanted the higher fee for a laser surgery. I'd warn you to avoid Murrell at all costs. BTW I have documentation and witnesses for my assertions and Murrell has not a stitch of evidence that I was informed or authorized his surgery. . read more

Horrible experience. I have been trying to have a conversation with Dr. Murreell since our first visit. My concerns was about the 2 MRI scans, I requested to do the area of concern and it became a problem. Now I can't get a call back from him and his nurses make me wonder why did I ever go there from the start. Never have I experienced such a experience like this. Was friendly while suggesting to test test test but not one time concern about my worries. Not the doc for me. I beat stage 4 colon cancer before and the first step was finding some one who genuinely cared for me to assist me in a wholesome kinda way. Not just my$$$$. Very disappointed and all I asked was can I get a call back and 2 months later still no call. I learned my lesson going to a doctor that treats me like this. I still suffer today from that doctors actions, I will never be the same. Thank u for not being concern of my heath and well being Dr. Murrell, it was not pleasant requesting to talk to you about my health for 2 months yet I have a bill with u! Wow! Choose wisely when it comes to your health and well being. A mental place is just important as a physical place. Well where do I start I'm so happy I came across DR.MURRELL website when I was seeking help and being in so much pain. I called the same day and his nice and friendly receptionist Marisela gave me an appointment the next day. When I went I was so nervous and scared but the moment DR.MURRELL came in he was nice, friendly, patient, caring he made me feel comfortable and just really took his time to hear my story and answer all my questions and he explain his procedures very well. My experience literally started on a simple "Google" search. I was hesitant but decided to schedule an appointment anyways. Well, that was all it took. I met Dr. Murrell and he is most sweet, professional, caring and down-to-earth doctor I've ever spoken to. We addressed the issue I was having, came up with a game plan and he took care of me immediately. Needless to say, I am all fixed up thanks to him and his team. Dr. Murrell is a nice guy and did seem to put forth full effort in treating his patients. Unfortunately, the billing in his office is underhanded and misleading. He is not in network for any private industry health insurances. His office bills your insurance and then sends you a bill for the rest, usually adjusted because the original prices are quite high. This is pretty much normal, but usually prices for these procedures are spelled out before treating the patient. I got a few bills for a couple hundred dollars per appointment. Dr. Murrell's treatments were overall helping, so I thought it was worth the cost. This kept up for a couple months. I even double-checked one of the schlerotherapy treatment charges early on to make sure I wasn't going to get a huge bill if I needed more of those. After this trend, all of the sudden I got slapped with an additional $4400 bill. No prices were told to me before the treatments. I would have stopped and gone somewhere else if I had known the cost. I could have easily just had a RBL procedure at barely any cost done elsewhere, but I came to Dr. Murrell for a less barbaric treatment and instead got only a marginal improvement in symptoms and several thousand dollars in debt. I can't in good faith recommend this doctor because of that. This was very underhanded. read more

My colon muscle was cut or torn during childbirth, and 20 years later I decided to get it fixed, I had surgery scheduled with another doctor and then decided to get a second opinion and went to zuri. He was so funny so personable so knowledgeable, and he gave me another option, it is a shot that will only put me out for a week versus 6 to 8 with the surgery. I feel extremely blessed that I found him, and would highly recommend him. Update. I got the solesta shot Monday and noticed a difference the next day. All that said, there is zero chance I can afford it further. When booking my appointment, they verified that they could bill my insurance prior to giving me an appointment. Dr Murrell has a unique ability to make the patient feel comfortable in talking about personal and embarrassing issues while maintaining a "keeping it real" and practical" professionalism. He shows empathy as well as any doctor I have been around, actually listens to all your concerns, and immediately connects with you. As a married, gay 45 year old man, speaking with heterosexual doctors about backside issues isn't the easiest thing to do. You're always expecting judgement or simply an inability to relate. I'd equate it to a woman preferring a female gynecologist regarding women's health maybe. This was not the case whatsoever with Dr Murrell. I have had a history of hemorrhoids and a fissure in the past with past hemorrhoid surgery and Botox treatment for anal fissure. The past hemorrhoid surgery was 10 years ago, but I felt it created other issues and didn't have the best results. It also created an anal tag that bothered me and the scarring likely contributed to the fissure. In the last year they returned. Luckily, it was not painful, but visually and romantically it caused me stress and marital problems. So I researched pretty extensively doctors around the country that I hoped could resolve my issues once and for all. I decided on Dr Murrell, and I'm very glad I did. He was able to resolve all my concerns, small and large, in one procedure. I do not live in California, nor did my excellent insurance cover my procedure; however, if you want a compassionate doctor, and you desire to be healthy on your backside lol, I can not recommend him enough. I am being very open on this review because I know how important this may be to someone else. I was able to be completely open and honest with Dr Murrell. The recovery from surgery is not pleasant for a month or so. And I did have some bladder side effects from the surgery, as is a risk. Those did resolve, and again Dr Murrell was involved and genuinely cared throughout follow-ups, etc. I'm happy to report I've totally healed beautifully from procedure, and all issues are now resolved. NEVER AGAIN - BEWARE! In desperate need of a doctor, I first saw Dr. Murrell a year ago - at that time he prescribed an ointment that caused intense pain and provided the opposite affect he promised and for which it was prescribed for. I figured it was an allergic reaction and didn't hold it against him. Cut to me needing medical assistance again for hemorrhoids. Dr Murrell once again prescribed an ointment that needed to be shipped to me because as he stated "If I write you a prescription, it will cost you $7,000. (WTF?!?!?!) Yet once again this ointment caused severe pain and burning - the opposite of what he promised. I called his office the very next morning - on Wednesday - and his nurse, who was terribly uninformed and stubbled to provide me with any information or any answers to my questions, simply advised I continue using the product as directed. I called again on Friday (2 days later) complaining of intense pain, pressure and burning and was told by a different nurse to stop using the ointment and was given zero alternative options. I asked that he please, please have Dr. Murrell call me ASAP. On Saturday, still with no response from Dr Murrell, I called the office yet again and left an emergency message. This time I did receive a call back from another doctor in Dr. Murrell's office who informed me that the ointment prescribed was NOT for hemorrhoids but was an anti-fungal cream and to stop using it immediately, which I already had. He suggested an over the counter cream (RectiCare) which helped alleviate the pain, pressure and discomfort instantly. I called Dr Murrell's office again on Monday - now my fourth phone call - to discuss the situation with him further and inform him of my reaction to this $7,000 ointment - he still has not returned any of my calls. It has been 9 days since he saw me in his office. To say I am disappointed and displeased is a massive understatement. Dr Murrell acts like he's your buddy, all "Hollywood" gloss, he gives you a bro hug when he walks in the room, talks fast, examines you even faster - he spent less than 5 minutes with me, prescribes an expensive ointment for which he is probably receiving a hefty financial kickback from the phramaceutical company and then does not even have the decency of professionalism to follow up and ensure his patient is recovering and doing well. Four phones calls to his office - and he never once called me back. In the meantime, I went to see yet another doctor who was completely perplexed as to why I was prescribed an anti-fungal medication in the first place. Shame on you Dr Murrell. No doctor should ever ignore a patient's continued phone calls or handle a medical situation in this manner ever. I asked multiple times that he call me back directly and still no word from him. And to top it all off - he does NOT accept insurance, so now I will receive an inflated bill and forced to pay for services that were horrific and caused even more pain and more medical issues. This is a man who should NOT be allowed to practice medicine especially given this approach. Save yourself and do NOT USE THIS DOCTOR!!! read more

I am a little embarrassed to admit that I saw a colorectal specialist, but..... here we go. I first met Zuri and his crew on a cold winter night. I have been fighting with a certain condition for years, and have taken more over the counter drugs for it than I can count. None of them worked. When I was introduced to Dr. Murrell, I was happily surprised by his professionalism and ability to explain the unexplainable. His bedside manner was impeccable and not once did I feel as if I was being judged. Moreover, I felt like I was chatting with an old friend who really wanted to help me. Extremely rude receptionist, Maria, who didn't bother to smile, say hello, just ignored a new patient. Moreover, I had to wait in the lobby for 40 mins, until someone asked if I was being helped. Maria just forgot to check me in! Very unpleasant woman. Next, I was given a call and received a voice message, asking to call back the office. I called the office, explained the situation, I get a response- "we never called you, and never left a voice message ". Instead of apologizing, they transferred to another receptionist, who asks "how can I help you?" I had to explain once again, a simple situation that they cannot property address. Again, she insisted that I am incorrect, I recited the voice message for her, still didn't help. I lost my patience with this office.
