I was pleasantly surprised to find out that a gym opened up much closer to where I lived. I was even more surprised by how much I have enjoyed the people that I've met (and rolled with) at Daruma. When I picked my very first gym, I passed on at least 3 different gyms because of the culture. In one of the gyms, the head coach/ professor didn't seemed involved. At another gym, I was being pushed to buy long term memberships and their expensive gi/ uniform. I never got those feelings with Daruma. Everyone has been super kind and supportive. The Milpitas location is still a relatively new (as of 2026) so some of the adult classes have a smaller turnout. This can be really good for people just starting in the sport, but I personally just like to roll. My step son also started Daruma with me and he loves it. The class structure is very fun and the coaches are really good about watching out for the kids safety. It's also been a really great experience for me and my stepson to bound over this shared activity.

Daruma Dojo originally opened in Sunnyvale, and we're so glad they expanded to Milpitas. A friend recommended this place to us, and it definitely did not disappoint. Daruma Dojo offers classes for kids/teens and adults. Adults can choose from morning or evening classes. For kids, ages 4-6 attend class from 4:30-5:30pm, while 7-15 train from 5:30-6:30, Monday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday classes are combined for ages 6-15. It's truly a family-friendly environment - so much that some parents have even joined after seeing their kids train! Membership also allows access to both Milpitas and Sunnyvale locations, though we haven't visited the Sunnyvale location yet. The front staff are friendly and welcoming, and the professors and coaches are patient and do a great job of explaining techniques in a way kids understand.

One instructor repeatedly singled her out and criticized her for arriving late, while other students who arrived late did not appear to receive the same treatment. The behavior became noticeable enough that other members approached her privately to ask if she was okay, which speaks for itself. The most concerning incident occurred when the instructor contacted her and asked for a verification code that had been sent to her phone, claiming it was needed to download an app. Trusting him, she provided the code. Shortly afterward, her Facebook account was compromised. While I cannot speak to anyone's intentions, this experience left our family extremely concerned and uncomfortable. Because of these experiences, my mother no longer feels safe or welcome returning to this gym. A martial arts school should foster respect, integrity, and professionalism. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. For anyone considering training here, I encourage you to do your own research and proceed with caution. I sincerely hope Caio Terra's ownership takes these concerns seriously, thoroughly investigates the matter, and takes appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of its students since their credit card, and personal information is on file. From the training coaches to the students, everyone fosters a supportive environment during training, regardless of the level or reason you're there, whether fitness or self defense, entry level or advanced belt. Coach Anthony and Kyle are amazing with the children, and all of the coaches are patient during the kids classes, with children of all ages. The kids come here and are able to learn, develop a sense of comradery, gain confidence, and they all have a lot of fun together. The coaches are very knowledgable and experienced, and willing to share their experience with the students.
