Not a safe place. I was a long standing, peaceful member until one day I was harrssed and physically threatened by an employee. I asked staff for help and they ignored me. A few days later, a staff member told me by phone that the matter was being investigated. She lied. My membership had been cut off. I asked why. No one told me. I made repeated requests to rejoin, and least, tell me what MY offense was when the other person so clearly violated me. No reply at all. Not even the courtesy of a response. I'm an elderly white woman. The other person was half my age, large, and black. She said, "I'm going to get you," and could have done real harm to me. Came to 14th Street Y to see Mark Jason Williams' play Straight Face Lies. It was a funny, familiar play about family and the lies that are sometimes told in the name of love. It was an enjoyable evening. What was remarkably with the company is I was running late (damn you MTA!) and my friends spoke with organizer who actually gave a ten minute grace! I made it within that window and I was able to enjoy the play. I thanked the lady after but I'm so sorry I didn't get her name to publicly thank her here. Taking pics of course is frowned upon but when has that ever stopped me. Building was clean and looked well kept. 14th street Y's staff was very friendly and welcoming. This gym is poorly run. Equipment is incorrectly installed so one cannot get bench in to lift but management does not care. There is no movement, yoga, meditation room like other gyms. One of the gym class rooms ( yoga room) , gets used for childcare a large part of the day so gym members have no access. The pool Alot of the classes conflict with one another so you can only do one class - not that there are so many classes each day. Sign up is confusing as the schedule page lists classes for multiple facilities. There are no tvs which even planet fitness at $9 a month has! Staff is generally nice. The aerobics classes have only 5 lb weights at most, consisting of sand bags which leak. Few aerobics classes except 2 ( with IVY ,which are great) but management declines to add more because supposedly they seek to "trend younger". Yes ageism is alive and well at this Y! They forgot that it was the older folks who kept their membership throughout the pandemic and kept it from going bankrupt. Sad because it could be better run. read more

I took the 10-session adult beginner swim class here for $296. The class is split into 3 groups based on level. I was surprised to discover I was the only one in the first group, having zero swim experience. The best part is that this means I pretty much experienced personal lessons. My instructor, Mayline, was amazing! She was very nice and patient, but also pushed me outside my comfort zone. I was nervous to swim the entire length of the pool (~20 yds) but she was confident I could do it, and I did! Swim class was a success The facilities overall are decent, not sparkling but I've also seen worse. There is a good amount of lockers so you can always find an available one. There is a small sauna - I've never seen anyone in it so I guess the tight space is not an issue! They don't offer towels or other toiletries so make sure to pack your own. Note I never used the gym equipment so can't comment there. I absolutely recommend Mayline and the other swim instructors. Some of the other employees here are questionable. The security guard is just a dude in a t-shirt that looks for a flash of a membership card when you walk in - don't think he'd be much help in an actual emergency. There is also a kid that takes attendance for the swim class and then sits there. Not sure of his role as he doesn't seem like a lifeguard. Anyway, the biggest issue I have with this place is there is an absolute NO make-up class policy. If you miss class for any reason, that's a sunk cost to you and you're short one class. I really don't understand why they can't let you into a class later in the week or the following week as classes continue all year round. Overall, I enjoyed the swim class so I have to give it 4 stars! read more

Sometimes you just need a no frills gym to get your workout on. I bought a Living Social deal for this gym, 6 day passes for $25. What a great deal, for less than $5 per visit, you can use their gym and also take classes here. I came here this past week and was able to use the gym without hassle. The front desk clerk checked me in without any drama and within 15 minutes, I was on a treadmill jogging my way to my 4 mile goal. I like his gym because it isn't crowded. Now granted there isn't anything pretty about this place (ie fluorescent lighting and bland furniture), but it gets the job done. The locker room is nice (probably renovated recently) with ample space to change, plenty of lockers (bring your own lock or buy one for $10 at the desk), a sauna, showers, bathrooms, hair dryers and nicely lit mirrors. After my 4 mile jog on the treadmill, I took a Vinyasa yoga class in one of the upstairs community rooms. Our instructor was very nice and easy to follow. She adjusted the class for all the different level yogis in the class. Free mats available, with yoga blocks and straps for you to use. I will definitely be back to finish my passes, but also because I enjoyed the calm and drama-free gym. If you are serious about your workout and don't mind a gym without ambiance, this place will do. As you can see, there are not a lot of reviews for this place and it is unfortunately for some but lucky for others. I decided to check out this gym despite some negative reviews we have seen. 14th Street Y definitely deserves a better rating nowadays given they did renovate the place a bit and actually has a pool, basketball course and offers classes. The fitness area was alright; there are not too many machines and don't have TVs. However, I join the gym for the purpose of pool and plenty of classes to attend. There are never a lot of people and I think it is actually kind of empty even during rush hours. I can really enjoy some quiet moment of workout and don't have to worry about waiting in line, sign up for class in advance or dealing with dirty locker room. The downside is they don't offer towel services either. It is $69 a month but for the facility and the fact it is barely crowded, I really enjoy working out here. read more

Poor attitude from front desk. I like to play basketball so the 14th st Y would be a great spot for some indoor games. I had used a guest pass once and it seemed like a nice facility. I decided to later come back with my two younger brothers to have them try it. However this time when I mentioned the free guest pass I was told in a condescending tone that, "guest passes are only for people interested in membership". I did not see that language anywhere online or in their policy. And I was not given this hassle the previous visit. Only difference I can imagine was the way I was dressed and that I came w my siblings ? (Shirt and pants vs basketball gear) I explained I don't think that's a rule, and that how does she assess (assume) who wants a membership or not? She just rolled her eyes and said if I really wanted the pass I'd have to wait and talk to someone and tour through the whole facility- which I did not do the prior visit. So I said screw it I'll pay, the sign up front said $20 a pass, and when I went to pay she said "its $25 now actually". Just really strange behavior/attitude from a community organization. If the free pass is not indeed free, that should be stated. Also management should be careful to allow employees to make judgements on who gets/doesn't get to trial the facility. read more

It's ok..the only appeal is the proximity and relatively cheap rates IF you qualify for certain discounts (student, family, etc) Otherwise its ridiculous because you pay almost the same as NYSC, Crunch etc for only a handful of classes and a really small exercise room. (four precor machines, really?) That used to be ok when the gym had less people but since they "remodeled" they've been adding new members like crazy. (They sorta remodeled, improving the lobby but leaving the locker room and bathroom old and crappy) Also, for religious reasons, they close the gym at 5 or 6pm on Fridays yet they are supposed to serve the entire community and half the staff isn't even Jewish. The real problem is the rates and membership department. Since its non-profit they dont trick you like, say Bally over contracts, but they are really incompetent in a way that seems shady. They promised us locked in family rates since my roommate was a member already even if we waited a month. Then they refused to give us either, and refused to honor their initial (verbal) promise and raised the rates. (Your rates are never locked in since its no contract). Basically every person will tell you something different. I was really annoyed because by then I'd already canceled my old gym and was stuck paying much more than was worth canceling. It also took them 4 months to credit us with our free "refer a new member credit." Overall, you get what you pay for and for me the location is good but if you're paying full rates you're much better off elsewhere. They need to decide whether they want to serve the community or act like a business cause right now they're not doing either very well. read more

This is such an amazing resource for families! They have daycare for $5 an hour while I work out! How amazing is that! Once your little one is 6mo old, they'll watch him but you can take a bunch of different "mommy and me" classes once you feel ready to work out. I started coming when my son was about 4 months old, and felt comfortable being out with him for a workout. My favorite class is with Kim on Thursdays, it's "New Body, New You" and it's fun b/c she's so great with the babies! If you little one cries, she knows how to distract them (she's dynamic and so animated!) so that you can keep your workout on! All of the daycare staff are wonderful, Jennifer and Vanessa are there mostly during the week, so I see them the most. The gym is also in good shape and it's never crowded. The locker rooms and sauna are nice and refinished. I like the crowd that come here too, mostly seniors and new moms like me. I'm a talker, so I always end up chatting with someone in the sauna. The equipment can be poorly maintained (someone recently fell off the rowing machine b/c the seat wasn't fastened on properly). It can be crowded and the gym is smallish. For me, it's convenient. I change at home and take a pleasant short few blocks' walk up here. If you time it right (after 7:30 weeknights; late morning weekends), it's not crowded. If Yelp offered grunts instead of stars, I'd offer this gym three grunts (not too loudly, though, of course). :-) BTW, the Educational Alliance is an outstanding and historic organization that has helped recent immigrants in Lower Manhattan with assistance for many decades. read more

The Gym by itself is not great. It is fairly small with a limited number of equipments. No great elliptical machines to speak of. Not many machines for weight training either. Some of the ones that they do have need lubrication and maintenance. I don't have any price points to compare it to since I have just moved to the city. But if I compare it against my previous gym (LA Fitness in Evanston, IL), 14 street Y pretty much sucks. I used to pay $30 per month for my membership for a gym that is 10 times the size of 14 street y. Needless to say it was much well equipped too. At 14 street Y, they charge you a hefty signing fee plus $75 per month for the membership. This is all ok, considering that it is NYC and not a Chicago suburb. But there is no excuse for their pathetic customer service. At the time of signing up, they will tell you that you can avail a free 1 hour training session with one of their trainers and that they will reach out to you to help you sign up. Here's what actually happened: Fact 1) no one reached out to me. Fact 2) when I tried to email the person who signed me up, she responds only 10 days after. Fact 3) when I try to speak with the people in the gym who were wearing jerseys that very clearly had "Trainer" written on them. They tell me that they are not actually trainers. I don't know if they are lying because they couldn't care less about their customers or they really weren't trainers, in which case the gym is probably defrauding its customers by making its employees wear "Trainer" jerseys when they are not trainers. Fact 4) their training coordinator reaches out to me some 15 days after I started my efforts to book that one free training session that was promised to me at sign up. After clearly mentioning to her that I am at work until 8 PM on weekdays, she offers to have my training session right on the middle of a weekday. Please note, this was after I had emailed her telling her specifically that I cannot be available before 8 PM on weekdays. She then tells me that she will get back to me in 24 hours. It's been 48 hours plus and there's been no response yet. Fact 5) they will lock you in a two month contract and if you are as disgusted as I'm, you cannot even quit the gym. Well, you can always quit if you don't care about the money. However, I'm going to stick with them for the remainder of my "lock in" period just because it is against my principles to let scums take away my money. Fact 6) at the time of writing this review, I have sent an email to one of their board members complaining about my experiences. I don't know if they even have board members or just "bored" members. I'd like to give more stars based on the former, but I've just dealt with the latter for the last hour and forty minutes. These are simple tasks. FAIL. Misinformed about class schedules after I politely said the the schedule directly above the guy's head (which contained very little) on the monitor said differently. Upsides - Swimming Pool and family swim times - Many arts shows and kid friendly programming - Great location and hours Downsides - Pool staff could be nicer. I came into the pool before my family and was greeted with "Can I help you?" by a young Asian woman rather abruptly. I got it, there is a sort of security with kids around, but really? Then, the lifeguard said "Don't you have a locker?" Clearly I don't if I have my underwear in my arms right? I said no, and he said "You know, just get a lock, and you can use a locker, I'm just saying, I'm just saying." Got it. Long story short: Beware of offending the staff at the pool, they aren't as professional as the rest of the 14th St Y staff. read more

The Japanese classes are the best and Michiyo Sensei is awesome! Heres the reason for the 1 star. The membership services, Andrew (whoever he is) and the customer service for this business is the worst!!! Just remember to cancel or report your credit card stolen after you terminate your membership because they will continue to charge your card and steal your money from you. The practice of ignorance on their behalf is a lame excuse for theft. When you cancel your membership, get a signature, get a copy , cancel your card. They will not stop at collecting your monthly dues over and over again. Beware! Aside from that, the japanese class is excellent:) read more

I love the place! I've been a member for the past two years and as an ex high school and college basketball player I must say the Y has some really good pickup bball. The league might be a little bit too competetive for me now but I still enjoy the Monday - Wednesday - Friday afternoon runs. The fitness center is now cleaner and nicer since the renovation that took place sometime last year. I sometimes get on the treadmill after work for half an hour and never have to wait for a machine. I don't really take advantage of the pool or the classes they provide. Overall, the 14th Street Y is the best gym in the neighborhood (LES) and definitely one of the more affordable ones. I pay just $69 a month for all the things they offer and I am actually thinking of talking my wife into joining for just additional $25/month. read more

This is a pretty decent gym, especially for the price. If you have a roommate or partner that also wants to join, it works out to only be $50/month each! The staff are super friendly and helpful and the hours are pretty good: Sunday: 7:00 am - 9:00 pm Monday - Thursday - 6:00 am -10:00pm Friday: 6:00 am - 10:00 pm Saturday: 7:00 am - 9:00 pm They have a lot of new Cybex machines in the fitness center and a good selection of free weights. One thing that I really like is that they have a large area for stretching with exercise balls, bands, and foam rollers. This type of area can sometimes be difficult to find in most gyms! The locker rooms are big and the women's locker room has individual showers and a sauna. You can either bring a lock each time, or rent your own locker for an extra $100/year. Overall, I like the atmosphere of this gym. It's never over-crowded and there are a lot of free fitness classes to go to, including yoga and pilates. My only complaints are that there isn't a mirror in front of the squat rack and there is only one cable machine. read more

I'm a long standing member of the community. Was really pleased to see the Y drop for a period their membership enrollment fee. The monthly fees aren't the cheapest in the area but felt with the new improvements in the gym and locker rooms it was worth it. Great front of house staff, always busy, clean and efficient. Gym was satisfactory nothing fantastic fairly no frills (for the price) but adequate. What made the monthly fees worthwhile was a morning swim. That was until i realized that every single day i had gone for 3 solid weeks the pool guy made some odd confrontational and odd comment to me. Odd bloke, as a woman on my own wasn't happy with this whatsoever. Never had anything like this in my career or personal activities. By the last day of the third week i was in tears by this picky harassment so spoke to management. Unfortunately, he's still working there and I now don't feel at all relaxed being around such an odd bloke alone in a pool. Swimming outside of these hours in "womans swim" is packed with people just socializing as was family swim and he's on duty each day! So, my advice is as a single woman be mindful of swimming anytime before 1pm, what happened to me could happen to you. I'm cancelling my membership, don't need to pay to be bullied! We did a swim class there, "Baby Belugas", and I have to say it was the best thing I've ever done so far as a father. The teacher was really great - I think name was "Melanie". A half hour of just pure joy. The place was super clean, and the class size was small......actually, we were the only ones in the class!! Having a private class was great, but we hope more parents sign up for Baby Belugas!! It was truly so much fun, and I sort of feel like the more the merrier. read more

I wish I could give 0 stars. Whenever I write a bad review I try to start with the positive. My swimming instructor, Miles, was wonderful. That's it that is all the good. I signed up for a group swimming class and they separated us based on our swimming skill level. I was placed in the intermediate section with Miles. The pool is super crowded and we are unable to practice at the same time because of it. There were six people in my group and with a class duration of 60 minutes we were only getting on average about 10 minutes of instruction per person. No biggie. Miles was wonderful and did what he could for us in the allotted time. I also had to miss two courses due to medical reasons. I was told that they don't usually do makeup classes but if I could provide proper medical documentation they could probably make an exception. This is where I ran into my first issue. I reached out to both the aquatics director and coordinator several times and left messages inquiring about makeup sessions. Even if they couldn't honor my request they can at least call back and say so. Nope, no response. I gave up and accepted that instead of 6 classes I'd only get two. By the end of my last session I was feeling much more comfortable on the deep end but I felt that I could use some practice. I figured why not buy one private session with Miles since it would be 1/2 hour of full on instruction. I emailed the coordinator and surprise surprise I received a response quite promptly. We scheduled a session for Thursday, August 20th. Now I travel from Queens so I actually left work early to make it to this session. When I arrived Miles tells me that the coordinator, Cheuk, accidentally scheduled my class for Thursday, September 20th. Well September 20th is a Sunday so obviously she was wrong. I also had to purchase a swim cap as I had left mine at home so I was pretty annoyed but I get it. Clerical errors happen. I walk over to the director's office, his name is Miguel, and before I could finish describing my situation he cuts me off with a curt, "I know. Miles let me know just now." So, no apology necessary I guess. I wanted to make sure I don't get charge and I was told to rest assured that classes aren't charged for till the day after and as it was a mistake on their part I would not be charged at all. I left very annoyed but satisfied that at least I wouldn't be charged. Oh well. Right? WRONG! The very next day I was charged! Okay, now I'm irked. I send through a passive aggressive email to Cheuk stating the issue and I receive a poorly written response stating that I would receive my refund within 7 business days. Okay great problem solved. Right? WRONG again. I waited 10 business days before inquiring about my supposed refund. This time I received an email telling me that she will get back to me on September 8. Okay, sure why not? On September 8th I received another email stating that I would receive my refund in 7 business days. Okay, this is starting to feel like Groundhog Day. Right? Yes, this time we're right. It is now September 17th and for the second time I did not receive my refund. Now I am livid. I write a nasty email and within a few hours I receive a response stating verbatim "HI Fahima, It refund to you on August 21, 2015 for $55.00" NO CHEUK IT NO REFUND ME! I don't even know how to dumb myself down enough for you to understand me. So I called and by some miracle someone picked up! I go crazy as she tells me that I have been refunded. Really? If you really believed that why have we been going back and forth for the last month? She then says I will ask the accountant what card they refunded me on. WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHAT CARD? You only have one card on file for me! If you have more than that's a really big issue. She then asks me is it the 3012 card? YES OF COURSE CHEUK because that is the only card YOU have on file. Please understand that I am at work so to step out of my office to yell about this is very inconvenient for me. She told me she'd call me back in a minute after speaking to the accountant. I told her I'm at work and I can spend the day on the phone because she is incompetent. I asked her to email me instead and she said she would ASAP. Lies. It's been 2 hours. I just called the coordinator and the director and guess what? No response. They're probably done for the day. I hate to be so petty over 55 bux and there were several times where I've considered giving up on the issue but I refuse to be robbed by incompetent fools. Even though it's really incovenient I think I won't get my money back until I go to the gym and create a scene which, to be honest, is very uncharacteristic of me. It's a shame because if this private session had gone well I would've purchased a few more. UPDATE: Spoke to a gentlemen from the front desk named Anthony. Dont bother with this gym. It may be ok for cultural events and day care, but for swimmers, athletes and physical fitness? The showers are dirty, lockers smell and staff is rude- some even harassingly so. The facility is arbitrarily closed at the whim of staff and the posted schedule is not adhered to. If cleaning people want to leave and gym/pool is not "busy enough"? They tell you to get out. Or cut off your "permission" (that you've paid for) to shower after a work out, esp in evening or off hours. Most recently, cleaning lady wants to get out early to pick up her kid on certain nights, so she enters shouting at guests to leave. Several times a male trainer then entered this dressing area of naked women, screaming to get out. Within 5 minutes of pool closure. Its a great central locale but the rude front desk, and personnel who scream and even threaten is NOT good- if not downright illegal. Many clients are elderly and do NOT deserve to be treated like cattle. Management is indifferent. Wish I could say otherwise, but find another gym. Dont spend your money to be threatened and abused by employees. read more

I like the 14 st Y. BUT. The classes are awful....too easy ...no challange. ...bad music from a tiny player. I am used to the upbeat thumping motivation from Crunch and NYSC....I tried the classes ....too easy no push .ALSO. NO SPIN.....if you enjoy it it's a major work out. So for the SAME PRICE of NYSC.....why would you come here ? I think the 14 th street Y should lower their monthly price because it's not a real gym. This is a family center with tons of things for kids and families. If you are looking for real motivation ...go elsewhere.. The 14th Street Y is hidden on 1st Ave just west of the L train stop, right next to a fire station and a temple. It has a pool (20 yd), basketball gym, aerobics rooms, sauna and free weights/machines. It is a Jewish Community Center but they don't ask what religion you are when you join, monthly fees are fairly reasonable but you get what you pay for. The pool is kept at a toast 86 degrees usually, with fairly restrictive times of use but about an hour for laps in the early am and evenings. Attracts everyone from elderly people who live in Stuyvesant to NYU students and hipsters. read more

One reason is the counselors are very funny, silly, smart, kind, generous, and peaceful. Another reason is because there is a Pokémon class. It teaches you all about Pokémon. Also the kids make it the best because there are so many to play with and they are so fun and funny. I think the 14th Street Y is a fantastic place. For the most part, I love this gym. I love the classes - zumba (Adja is the nicest person, and a great teacher and dancer), NIA, kickboxing, boot camp, step. All good. Most of the people who take the classes are very friendly, and most classes have a range of ages and fitness levels, so it's a non-judgmental atmosphere. They're dedicated to being green and even have a compost bin, in addition to recycling. Love it. Sometimes it gets crowded, but usually there isn't a wait for any of the machines, or if there is, it's incredibly brief. When machines need repair (not too often), it happens pretty fast. This is an adorable little gym. Good people, good machines. Not exactly high class or shiny but quite convenient for me. When you fill out the form for a membership it asks your religious preference which is weird, but they give you the choice of "none" so it's cool.
