Equinox Park Avenue is probably my least favorite location. It's also one of the smallest Equinox locations I've been to, which makes the layout feel even more cramped. The entire gym is on the second floor everything. I usually stop by once or twice a week when I'm in the city after work, mostly because the classes are actually good. That said, the locker room setup is terrible. The lockers are incredibly narrow, and I genuinely don't understand how you're supposed to fit your clothes in there without cramming everything together especially if you also have shoes or a bag. There's barely any space. The locker area layout is also awkward. There isn't enough room to comfortably change without people crowding around you or standing right there scrolling on their phones. It feels tight and poorly thought out. I can't speak for what it's like earlier in the day, but between 5:30-6:30pm it's the worst time to go. Everyone getting off work seems to land there at the same time, and the space just doesn't handle that kind of volume well. Honestly, the classes are the only reason I stop by occasionally. Otherwise, this location wouldn't be one I'd choose to visit. read more

Equinox Park Avenue - Worst locker space I have ever seen. Narrow and zero room. - Gyms Near Me - New York, New York

I've been going here since November 20 24 and have been so thankful for this location, mainly for the proximity to the 6 line, as well as my previous office. This is one of Equinox's smaller locations, with the spa directly to the left of the front desk and locker rooms beyond that. This location does not have a sauna, just a steam room, but does have nice complementary massage chairs inside the spa area as well as personal l red-light saunas is that you can rent out. This location gets busy and finding a space on the floor can get competitive, as well as on the treadmills. However, the very last row of cardio machines has a good amount of stair masters that are usually available. My favorite part about the studio is the staff, specifically management and the cleaning staff. They go above and beyond to keep the space organized and assist members. While I am no longer a member of this location as I've relocated jobs, I will always remember the great morning workout classes I took at the Park Avenue location. read more

i like equinox but it's always really crowded and my neck has been hurting recently which only started when i worked here the other day. coincidence? no. i would like to give a shoutout to anytime fitness in florence as i never injured myself in this gym. some of u might say i can't in my right mind blame equinox for this travesty that landed me in the er for two days but i think the evidence is overwhelming as my neck did not hurt before i worked out here and so if i had never come here i never would have injured my neck. furthermore, the facilities are very nice i like the locker room and the showers as well as the sauna room great place to socialize as there is always plenty of people taking up all of the machines so if you want to spend hours working out look no further than this gym. read more

After 170+ check-ins, it's probably about time I wrote something about my third most checked in place on Yelp, right behind home and work. I'm a morning gym guy, and this is a morning gym experience. Walk in: 7:32am. Elevator access is the only actual way to get up here since it's on the second floor. Technically if you work in the building, like I do, you can get in the back way, but it's very hit or miss (mostly miss) and a likely frowned upon mode of entry in general. Check in: 7:33am. The locker room is moderately occupied. It's got plenty of rows and lockers, a good number of showers (~10? I've never actually counted.), a number of hair dryer/mirror stations, and a very roomy, super steamy steam room. The lockers are a mix of halvesies and fatties, and everyone wants a fatty, so if you come in during prime time* you might have to search, or settle for something smaller. *prime time = before work on a Monday morning after people enjoyed a weekend of "light beer" and "diet food." I think the only thing bad about the locker room is that there are only two stalls. I will not go into much more detail than that, but I've seen (and been in, let's be real) an early morning pre-workout line more than once. Less than optimal. Work out: 7:43am-8:38am. There are plenty of cardio options, lots of free weights and machines, and two large areas for mat work. There's also three separate rooms for classes: one for spin, one for yoga, and one for other group classes. I've done classes, but I'm mostly a mat/cardio guy. Mats can be tricky in the morning, but don't be afraid to squeeze in and make friends. Just watch where you're kicking. There's plenty of staff and trainers, someone is always handing out towels, and I don't often see many people that would set of the patented Planet Fitness "lunk alarm" - though now that I think about it, there is one guy that spends an inordinate amount of time upside down and screams sometimes, however I find that more amusing than annoying. Eucalyptus Towel: 8:39am. Grab one and refresh yourself on the way back to the locker room. Grab a big towel, steam if you have time (I try to fit it in 2-3x per week), and take a shower laden with excellent water pressure and plenty of the Kiehl's products Equinox is known for. I've never had to wait for a shower, but I imagine that might be a different story at this time of morning in the women's locker room. Get ready, go to work, and enjoy the fact that you're done working out and the day has just begun. For me, it's a 9 second ride up a few floors, which could literally not be more convenient. It's a pricey gym membership, but if you take advantage of all Equinox has to offer and find yourself there 4-5x per week like me, the cost is more than justified. read more

I go here cause it's an equinox and it's still better than my neighborhood or buildings gym. But it's the smallest equinox I've ever been too. Maybe that's standard for NYC but it's a baby in comparison to LA and DC clubs. So, every week day after work it is absolutely packed. Not enough cardio machine. They have one pectoral fly machine that is a rarity if it's free. It someone gets it, they're hogging it for 20 minutes. Yet ever time I get it someone is standing next to me waiting for me to leave to asking to wor Update: turned my cancellation papers in. Happy to get out. Overcrowded, small. There are now only TWO working showers in the men's locker room. Tents have been set up for construction (only on 4/6 that are broken) in both locker rooms. This occurred around the first of January. However, no progress at all has been made. At any given moment, there is a line of seven women for the showers. This is absolutely absurd, especially for the male patrons, and every single patron should be compensated monetarily for this huge inconvenience. A large part of the benefit of this gym is the shower amenity, which is now nonexistent for most patrons given the long lines. read more

It's sad that they are not taking care of the members here. The building is in bad shape since the air ventilation (ac or heat) is constantly breaking down. See photo below. They are fixing the showers in the locker rooms but that means minimal showers available. Management is in constant disarray and chaos. They charge for everything and costs are sky high yet services are at an all-time low. For example, the classes used to be offered more consistently at different times but not anymore. There are hardly any classes on Sat or Sun afternoon. The hours are terrible. Why do they close at 8 pm on Friday and 7 PM on Sat and Sun. The holidays are even worse...they may stay open for 4 or 5 inconvenient hours. Now, on to the gym floor, it has become so crowded at all hours (not just peak) that you have to carve out your little spot. My review and rating is based off of the gym itself for the price, and not based off of what it is compared to other equinox Clubs. I have been an equinox member for 6 years now. 4 of those years I had all access but for the past 2 years I have only had a single club membership at park avenue. The gym Is always very clean. The showers are great. They have 6 different Kiehls products to use when showering. The products are NOT cheap if you had to buy them in the store. They have everything at your disposal from shaving cream, mouthwash etc. This is ideal for someone who is commuting in and out of the city. They have a huge steam room that I never really use because its overrun with creeps most of the time (like most gyms in nyc) but sometimes after a long night of drinking its nice to go in and detox. What it offers: I do not take advantage of everything that the gym offers, which is everything. I literally go in, weight train and leave. They have tons of classes from spin to yoga to BEST BUTT EVER. I did that class once with a friend and I felt like such a creeper. They have all of the free weights and things you could possibly need. All of the equipment is kept in very good shape and always organized nicely. I do wish they had more space to utilize all of the things that they have,(like the sled) but theres often no space. Service: Overall the service is good. There are some really nice people there. Especially some of the trainers. Whats interesting is that I find that the cleaning/maintenance crew are the most happy and engaging. The place is always sparkling clean so they should definitely be proud of their work. The front desk staff in the mornings are usually very nice to me and know me by name. BUT! I noticed that when I go in at nights which is rare, that the people are far from friendly. You are lucky to get a hello or even be acknowledged at all. ummmmm .....YOU HAD ONE JOB.....and thats to say hello and smile. AND YOU FAILED! A smile goes a long way. This is coming from a guy with some serious resting bitch face. But I give what I get and when entering a club I would like to get a hello and smile. They may take it as "oh Its just a front desk job" but no. You are the face of the brand. Go into work and look hot and happy. You could possibly meet your future rich husband/sugar daddy/boss etc. Now this brings me to the crowd. Crowd: This is Murray hill so the crowd is a lot different than your typical NYC equinox crowd. Its definitely a bro, young finance guy crowd. Then theres a bunch of older corporate park avenue guys. Its not really the mixed bag that you typically get at other equinox clubs where you have everything from finance guys, artists, models, aspiring models,instathots, celebrities, and the mega wealthy old freak hanging upside down in glittery tights with a huge bulge. I used to love to go to the gym during times when the gym was somewhat full just to get motivation, maybe meet friends, but now I am a go in and get out person. So if you are that person who wants to meet cool artsy NYC people and make friends, this definitely is not that gym. The Space: The gym is on the second floor of an office building. Its great to be above ground with a nice view of Park Avenue the entire span of the gym. That gives the gym a lot of light and energy. The gym itself is very small though. If you have to workout during peak times I would look for another equinox. Its beyond crowded. I went recently at peak (6pm) and the amount of people on the floor gave me anxiety and I left in the middle of my workout. There was a line for the shower and in the steam room all I could hear is " so like yeah bro last night was a total shit show bro" Luckily I can workout in the middle of the day when the crowd is light so I enjoy it, but its a totally different place when overcrowded. Overall: I have been working out nonstop for 13 years. Its very important that I like the place where I spend 10 hours a week. Just like you want that new BMW to sit in that 2 hour rush hour traffic everyday, the same goes for a gym. I want it to feel like my home, and yes its small, I consider it cozy. Bigger isn't always better (said by no woman ever) but its the truth...kinda. When it comes to the decision of signing up for equinox I think you really just need to realize what you are paying for and why you are paying it. In NYC there are millions of people on top of each other. With this id say you are paying for exclusivity,(crowd control) Service, Cleanliness, High end Products, and last but not least, the name. Im giving it a 4 for what it is. And its an extremely clean gym with everything that I need to workout in order to look good, get ripped, and have my skin clean smooth and shining with those kiehls products. I have been a member of Equinox since 2017. I joined initially because I knew I wouldn't go to the gym unless I paid a lot of money. Turns out I met a lot of my great friends here and "It wasn't fitness, it was life." Then pandemic hit... they limited a lot of the classes and the customer service got worse than it was prepandemic, which was not really good in the first place. My firm was reimbursing me some money for my membership as a way of promoting wellness and I needed a receipt showing that I had a year membership. I asked the manager for a document showing how much I was paying annually. I got a month statement instead. When I asked for what I needed, I didn't get a response. I called many times asking since my emails were not being answered and still nothing. I got so frustrated I had to find a workaround. There are other instances I've had with other branches, but this was REALLY annoying with this location. I finally had it so I decided to cancel my membership. Boy do they not make it easy. They literally make you call a million times, leave your name, promise you someone will call and no one does. When I finally got a hold of someone, they gave me attitude. I don't know what it is, but they really do have this entitled disposition and it is really aggravating. At times it feels like my All Access membership is not enough and I feel like a second class citizen. Unfortunately, I have to stay here until March, but I already asked them not to renew my contract. I will be taking my business elsewhere. I don't need this "life." read more

I never thought I'd be this person but I am. Everyone says that this is a mediocre location because it's older and not that great but I've never been to any other nox location so let's just say ignorance is bliss. In terms of the locker comments, they recently updated the lockers to have locks over the Christmas break, so check. The staff are always really friendly to me and smile and greet everyone when they walk in. It's not superrrrrr big but you have everything you need honestly for a good booty burn. Their METCON & tabata classes are the bomb-diggity. Vinyasa yoga classes Monday nights with Annalise are MAGICAL. Can't recommend enough. A lot of people whine about how nox is super expensive. And it is. But if you use all the amenities and work out regularly (4-5x/week), its more than worth it. Are you using most of the machines? Are you showering there? Are you taking classes and taking advantage of your FREE training and Pilates session??? You gotta do it to the max!!! Also their juice press downstairs is soooo good. They're kinda short staffed sometimes during the week and the weekend workers don't make the smoothies as good so I try to avoid getting juice during the weekends. Sorry not a big deal. All equipment is in one room. Everything is crowded. I understand there is no track or swimming pool but I just felt claustrophobic. I thought for the price it was going to be a huge gym...but it wasn't... I was really disappointed. Who should go? If you are into fancy bathrooms and great bathroom ambiance and would like to go to a gym to job in a treadmill and do some muscle building exercises, I think this is good. For me, no, I am marine trained and I don't do the same everyday. This is one of the more bare-bones nox locations in the city. It's definitely a bit older, but you have everything you'd need for a workout. The locker rooms are super dated, and lockers don't even have locks which is a huge pet peeve of mine. Everything is always clean and well-kept as always though, so while I will be taking my bag into the showers with me, I don't have to worry about cleanliness at the very least. Very cramped with long queues for cardio machines and weights. To make things worse, the trainers monopolize squat/power racks regardless of club members waiting. I blame poor management. Unless you're just looking to get bilked out of money each month, you should seriously consider alternative gyms. I find many of the NYSCs in midtown to be much better in terms of space and availability of exercise machines. There's also some questionable stuff going on in the sauna. This is my home equinox because I live around the corner- moving soon so I will miss this place!!! They have a lot of locations so I will be attending another one once I move. I have the all access pass so I can go to any equinox. Although you have to bring your own lock to this one I really like it!!! So of course the gym is going to busy before and after work so I don't have any gripe with that. I think everyone is really friendly here and the classes are great! I like cycling with Faris, body sculpt with John, and Pilates with Rita (jose was a sub a couple times- still great). I like the layout- one floor- simple. Everything is always super clean!! I joined this gym recently in hopes to be able to use it. The steam room has been out of commission and I don't think they should charging the full price if their amenities are CLOSED. Its pretty much the reason I signed up. To be able to use the steam room. It's part of the work out! WHAT AM I PAYING FOR? I don't even know how to rate this club. It's like a science fiction movie in which robots and zombies who don't smile or speak wander the gorgeous granite and marble rooms. You enter on street level and go up one floor. The elevator doors are iron and extremely ornate, more like you'd find down by Wall Street. Engraved at the top are "courtesy" and "integrity." The lobby is loud. By loud I mean nightclub with hard rock (not metal but getting there). Then you enter locker room and it's entirely different and very loud jazzy music . I just came to steam because 7 pm shoe at Joe's Pub and 75 min to kill. The locker room is exquisite except for lockers which, annoyingly, do not have key locks. But you can check purse at coat check so it's okay. I was there 45 minutes at rush hour and literally not one woman smiled or uttered a word. Moreover, the expressions were dour, as if they all shared some terrible, nay, unspeakable secret. Trump is POTUS so I don't know how much worse it could be. But hundred or so women who looked unbelievably unhappy. Where do they work? Where do they live? It's as though they had all come from refugee camps where they witnessed atrocities for which people get sent to The Hague. I have been to 20 or 25 Equinox clubs in LA and NYC. One in DC. One in FL. This was truly bizarre. Steam room excellent but the music is a drag. I would bring earplugs were this my normal club. read more

Everything just seems old here, compared to other locations. Very small, I don't bother coming in the morning before work because it's always been packed. I'd recommend walking up a few blocks to the 43rd and 5th location for mornings. Nights here at 9 pm is what I use this location for, and occasional yoga class. Love the free weight area here though, major plus. Wish they would do a few key updates , like the locker rooms and some equipment, along with limiting how many people can be here at a time. I'd pay for more that. But $200 already seems like a bit much if you're not into classes or phased by the infused towels or bathroom products. But honestly gyms in NYC are tricky, and there isn't much competition with equinox currently. So for the time being I'm stuck. read more

This review is half for this specific location and half for equinox overall. I was a member here for almost two years - I didn't do all access, just this one club because I live and work in the area. Honestly, the stars here are really for this location because mostly everyone working here is friendly and accommodating - instructors, membership advisors, managers, etc. The classes I recommend are Body Sculpt with John, Studio Cycling with Joanna or Betsy, and Precision Running with Kevin or Arthur. Also highly recommend any class that Marcus Jackson teaches. However, for the monthly price, the customer service at Equinox is lacking, so I'm cancelling my membership. I have a bad taste in my mouth after they accidentally charged me an additional monthly fee a few months ago and took over a month of arguing with a horribly rude customer service rep Melissa to finally get my money back. And after all of it I barely got an apology. She treated me like a criminal. If I'm paying a premium to be a member here, treat me like it - it's that simple. I also think it's crazy that they barely offer guest passes or let you attend any other club (I was in LA for work and had to pay like $30 just to go to the club there). Show a little bit of hospitality. Not worth the hype at all!!! I'm going back to classpass/paying extra for classes at the boutique studios I know and love (like SLT, Overthrow, Barry's and Swerve). I'd rather pay a little more to have a more fulfilling workout experience and overall more positive customer service! Also beware of cancellation policy - 45 days notice to cancel (only after you've been a member for one year). Basically I've been trying out every NYC Eq location and reviewing their showers. I kind of don't do anything else now except for go to work, go to the gym, and write Yelp reviews, as I'm sure you can deduce from these posts. Park Ave is pretty medium which actually puts it really low on a list of the most elite gyms in NYC. It's nice that there was lotion available in each stall in addition to the communal ones, which is different from any other location I've been to. I would give this location 0 stars if possible. It's definitely the worst Equinox I've ever been to. It's really small, the yoga room is right by the cardio where you can hear all the machines going (it's not peaceful), they have very limited classes compared to every other location and like everyone else mentioned, the music is so loud it's obnoxious. Do people really like the music this loud? I seriously doubt it. It's deafening AND again, don't even think about having a peaceful yoga class because you can hear the music super loud too. There are only 3 bathroom stalls in the ladies locker so be prepared for a line during busy times to use the toilet. I don't use the showers because...gross. Let's get back to classes and the lack thereof. Unless you like to go before or after your 9-5, good luck having class choices because there are barely any. No mid-morning or late-afternoon. And good luck expressing this to management, they will act like they care and they're listening, but no. $200/month for this location is a joke. They should have their membership fees contingent on the status of the gym and what they offer in terms of size, classes, etc. read more

So, I'll start this review by saying that I wouldn't even be writing it if I hadn't had a free membership, because I would NEVER, EVER pay $150/month to go to any gym unless it actually included liposuction. Having said that, it was super nice to be a member for free for several months and if I had an exorbitant amount of money to blow, I might join as an actual member. The locker rooms were actually my favorite part of the place. The showers were all private, large, with wood-slotted raised floors. They had pumps with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. There were disposable razors in little glass jars for you to take. It was really like a spa. By the sinks there is body lotion, mouth wash, the works. The mirrors by the lockers are equipped with more body lotion, hair gel, hair spray and super powered hair dryers (not like the hotel variety...these babies will do the job, and quick!). There's also a scale, which measures your weight in lbs AND kilos (which sent me into a panic more than once....WHAT!?! I weigh 350 lbs?!). There's also a surplus of towels and robes for you to use. The fitness facilities are nice, though it seemed a bit watered down. I mostly stuck with the cardio machines and classes (more on that in a minute) so I can't judge 100% accurately, but it just didn't seem to be the place for serious body builders. Lost 1/2 a star. Classes: They seem to have a lot of them on their fancy shmancy schedule, but the ones I wanted to take were never in the timeframe I could attend. I did make it to several yoga classes, and I NEVER felt welcome. They were supposedly beginner classes, though the instructor played favorites with the apparent regulars, and with the experienced yogis in the room. When I wasn't doing a pose right, he'd actually YELL at me! That's not very Zen-like, is it? Lost one star. Lastly, and this goes for any gym, but especially Equinox. I honestly think that in the $150/month contract, it might as well state that it includes membership to a dating program. This place is just crawling with singles...rich singles...and gold digging singles. It made me kinda sick to watch these interactions. Lost another 1/2 star. Overall, if you're single and use the gym as a replacement/supplement for the bar scene and have the $$ to cough up, this is totally the place for you. P.S. I'd like to update my review for the recent month. I did see some improvement from the gym, and the good thing is that you keep seeing the motivation vibe here.:) Personally, I can't give this gym high score for its price and expectation. First, it was true that this location is very crowded, and women's room is disgusting sometimes. Many times it's the problem with people who work out here. Not sure why they don't clean up or put their stuff away when they are done for shower. Sometimes it's even a shit smell and some weird sweating. Second, Don't have enough supplies(hairdryer, Q-tips etcs) in every spot. It's hard to do workout and shower when you have to go work at 9am because 8:30am is very crowd in lady's room. Good thing is: The staff was fine, friendly, and helpful. Class is good. Just sometimes don't take their(management and membership) promise like promotion seriously...you joined because you want to be with people have the same motivation as yours. Overall, the experience is ok and I'm sure that it's still better than other gyms. Just really need improvement because they keeps bringing more people in. So you're going through life not really considering yourself a fancy person and you're totally OK with that. But then one day you have the opportunity to experience something fancy, like first-class flying or a really nice bottle of wine, and you feel so at home with those fancy things, like you BELONG with them, all of a sudden you're saying to yourself, "you know, self, I think we may actually be a fancy person!" I really thought I had an okay thing going with my Crunch membership, but that all changed when the lovely KRey took me as a guest to Equinox. When you walk in, you may notice that there are chandeliers hanging over the front desk. Chandeliers!!! People smile at you everywhere you go, and the fresh scent of an Aspen ski lodge permeates the air. At least, it's what I imagine the scent of an Aspen ski lodge to be; I'm not fancy enough to have been to an actual Aspen ski lodge. KRey and I took a class called Willpower and Grace, which is an interesting name choice because when it came to following the teacher and her butt-burning exercises, I discovered that I have some of the former, and nearly none of the latter. I tried really hard, but I simply have no grace. None. I fell over a couple of times, even though both feet were planted firmly on the floor. You see? But the class itself was fun and it will be interesting tomorrow to see whether I can sit down without crying out in pain. There were a lot of squats in this class. A LOT of squats. The ladies' locker room is shiny and clean and stocked with more products than my own bathroom. I tried the mouthwash, and though I braced myself for the tongue-burning sting of Listerine (Crunch's mouthwash of choice), I was pleasantly surprised with a mild but effective spearmint flavor. I've never had mouthwash like this! This is the Best Mouthwash Ever. I love it here. read more

The general manager at this location is incredibly unprofessional. I am a paying member of Equinox in Chicago. I was in the city for the weekend to visit my boyfriend. I had a legitimate guest pass and the manager here wouldn't let me use it because I was an active member in another city. It was as if paying dues to this gym each month made him disinterested in helping me. I haven't been made to feel this unwanted in quite a while. The manager was very disrespectful and told me that my guest pass wasn't valid. This manager should be fired in my opinion. He doesn't understand that he is in a customer service oriented business. I love Equinox but avoid this location! read more

Sad times... After having been a solid paying member of Equinox since 2001(let's just say i bought someone a car with the money i spent) i had to quit a few months ago...it hurt me more than them because i really loved their gyms. The sad part is how completely TERRIBLY they have treated me since. I quit over the phone (something i am now told is impossible) canceled the card they had on file and stopped going. Three months later i get a call saying i owe them 2 months dues ($330) despite their not having a card and my not have been to the club in OVER 3 months. I told the guy who called that i had canceled - he said "oh who did you call" i gave the number and he said "ok" and hung up... Then i get collections notices form some RUDE a55 company in Texas - harassing me over and over to pay the "fraudulent" amount.... I call Equinox customer service to tell them that there is a problem and they say that it is impossible fro me to have quit over the phone and despite what i was told, i needed to either send certified mail saying i quit, or go to the gym and fill out a form. So regardless of what i believe, i owed them and they would not withdraw it from collections at which point i asked to speak to a manager and was HUNG UP ON!!!! I called back and (now having learned my lesson) am writing down EVERYONE's name as i speak to them...i find the woman who hung up on me (a manager) and she says that it was me who hung up and the only way to resolve this (maybe) is to go and talk to a general manager in person.... Full disclosure: Mr. k rey works at Equinox -- but not this one. Lucky for me, I'm still privy to a promotion for employees' family members that significantly reduces the monthly fee and eliminates Equinox's initiation fee, thankyouverymuch! Before we begin, a little secret about k rey on gym days: I may come in outfitted like other midtown executives, but my workout "attire" consists of: ratty clothes stolen from my brothers in high school, race t-shirts (including Dad's comfy Marine Core Marathon 1981 singlet, which predates me) and incredibly unattractive headbands. My running shoes (which I'm proud to say were specifically prescribed for my stride) are an unfortunate shade of DayGlo green. When my heart rate goes above 130, my face turns tomato-red and my hair forms a matted mess around my forehead and said ugly headband. The green shoe-red face combo. is like Christmas on crack, and the image that comes to mind is a woman several hours into labor, in serious need of serious medication to ease her suffering. While I've never had a child, this comparison pretty much nails how I feel about going to the gym. Fortunately, Equinox's unique environment makes things slightly more bearable. For one, you never have to search for a tacky key chain or ID card....they have finger scan technology. "Have a great workout, k rey!" says the greeter guy at the desk under the entryway chandelier (see pics). And then there's the locker room. It is PRISTINE. One woman's entire job is keeping it that way. For instance, after I run in to splash cold water on the my sweaty self after a grueling Body Sculpt class, the lady politely waits for me to heave myself onto the bench, and then wipes everything down. She does this after ANYONE uses the sink. Or the shower. Or the bathroom. Or the steam room. It's awesome. They also stock nice soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, moisturizer, mouthwash, hairdryers, towels, razors and more to help you make the transition back from from mannish-mess to Manhattan lady when the time is right. Classes are fun and challenging, and include things like Intensati, Dance, Kickboxing, Pilates, etc. Even the "beginner" classes got my heart pumping. While I may have exchanged vows with one highest-booked trainers on the Upper East Side, the folks here seem to know what they're doing, too. And even though this is one of the city's smaller Equinoxes, it has a nice assortment of equipment, rooms for classes, a spa (open to non-members) and a Pilates studio. Equinox isn't immune to the occasional prime time cardio machine congestion, but I've never had an issue finding something to do. They also have a small shop with stylish workout clothes, which most women in the gym favor over my brand of male family hand-me-downs. The 'wich craft downstairs provides semi-healthy snacking options. And the other thing I like about Equinox is its online program that can sync with Outlook to schedule personal training sessions, classes or gym visits. Fancy! I'll never love the gym and I'll always feel inadequate around women who *glisten* -- even above level 8 on the treadmill. However, Equinox's little luxuries and my discount help me focus on my what's most important: burning just enough calories every week to balance my cocktail-tippling, food-inhaling ways. If you like doing yoga while someone else has a toe in your face or being around personal trainers that gossip and stand around... then this is the place for you!!! At $160/ month (plus sign-up fee), I would expect the management to be on top of their s*it. But they are definitely not. Will, the General Manager, just disregards emails that he doesn't feel like responding to. The spin classes are great, but all of the other classes are so overcrowded it's terrible. Honestly, it's clean and full of good looking people, but for the money spent, they really need to work on treating members much better. read more

So, I've been a member since October '09, I'm at the gym at least 3-4 times a week during the cooler months, and I've been really happy until today. Let me be clear: the facilities are clean, the staff is friendly, working out is great at Equinox. But I have to vent. When I joined I made sure I'd be able to freeze my membership during the warmer months (I prefer to run/roller-blade/bike outside), but turns out I was deceived. While I can freeze my membership - for 1,2, or 3 consecutive months - there is a $30/month fee for those months AND if you haven't fulfilled your full year commitment you are charged normally until your 13th month (at which point the freeze charges are enacted). I WAS NEVER TOLD ANY OF THIS. Essentially, I'll be charged in full at $140 a month until November '10, even if I don't step into the club for 3 full months. Considering this nonsense, I spoke to the general manager about cancelling my membership entirely. Believe it or not, if I'm not pregnant, injured (with a doctors note), fired from my job, or moving 25 miles away from all equinox's then I can't cancel without paying in full through the year. I feel like Equinox is geared towards women. There are sooooo many chicks in this location at any time of the day. And why does this suck for me, a fellow chick? Well, besides the point I can't pick up a dude since the women here are fitter, younger, and more attractive than I am, the showers and the hair dryers are usually occupied! If you're a lady, try to avoid this place when there are classes scheduled cuz you'll be waiting in line for the showers and rubbing booties in the changing areas. AND if you're average in all physical departments (face, body, boobs, etc), avoid it for the sake of your self esteem. read more
