She was on FaceTime with someone but it was a 30 second interaction- this place is mostly self serve. Froyo 4/5: great variety of flavors. I got 3 flavors: mint chocolate chip (not creamy, kind of icy, and minty), raspberry pomegranate (bright colored, tasty but sugary it seemed like it was made with fresh berries) and my favorite a chocolate banana peanut butter flavor that was perfectly textured likely due to the banana. There were a good amount of toppings available, but mostly candied and not fruit. I got strawberry slices, rainbow cookies, and cookies and cream bites. All were good; the cookies were a little dry. I walked into this froyo shop thinking I'd casually sample a flavor or two before creating my delightful treat like a normal human being. Nope. Apparently, they're running a full-on sample surveillance operation behind the counter. Here's how it went down: I asked for sample cups (a totally normal request) Employee #1 acted like I'd asked for state secrets and passed the cups to Employee #2 Employee #2 then had the ~official authority~ to serve me This is next-level unsanitary. Now instead of one clean interaction, we've got multiple people handling what I'm about to put in my mouth. Who knows where those hands have been between the handoff? The unnecessary germ transfer is just... why? Are samples really this high-stakes that they need a designated sample handler? It's frozen yogurt, not plutonium. The whole thing felt weirdly controlling and just plain gross. Pro tip to management: If you're this paranoid about samples, maybe just put out little self-serve cups like every other froyo place on earth. I love this place! It has the vibes of any 2010 frozen yogurt shop lol. I think they have pretty great soft serve, including dairy-free/vegan (Oatly and fruit flavors) options. They have a lengthy topping bar which is labeled demonstrating which items are gluten free, dairy free, etc. I also found the prices to be extremely reasonable for the amount of ice cream and toppings you get! It is a self-serve place, but the staff seem nice. It might not be as attractive as neighboring ice cream or gelato spots in UES, but it's a cozy, laid back place with good soft serve. I am very disappointed with this location. I go there very frequently but today, not only was I cheated but was treated disrespectfully. When I went to the check out I saw that the weighing scale was already at 0.4 with nothing on it. As 16 handles charges based on the weight of your cup, this meant I was paying extra for no reason. Even worse, when I pointed out the mistake to the cashier, he dismissively said it was always like that while in fact I have seen it at 0 many times. When I told that to the cashier he rudely said "then don't buy it," with no apologies. Worst of all this unscrupulous overcharging with "weighing scale problems" has happened before. My experience today was clearly Four Stars. I came between 12-1pm. I was the only customer AT First. I had time to be shown the process. My allergy concern questions were answered. I've never entered in the past since yogurt is not good for mold allergy. I was drawn in by the sign that said Cashew Milk as a NEW option. The Customer Service Representative was very helpful and patient. Customers began to arrive. Most took theirs to go. There's plenty of seating if you prefer. In the rear they have a Party Room. There's also a restroom. This is self serve. The Small Size Cup was huge to me. The good news is that you are charged by the weight. You don't have to fill up your cup. Naturally the toppings add weight. You have unlimited choices. I thought there was plenty of options to meet my tastes. I asked for a tiny sample and was provided with two little cups. I had to get the hang of serving myself. Using the Peanut Butter Choice I kept pumping. I ended up getting it all over. Luckily they have a drain to catch it. I didn't like the Peanut Butter taste at all. I really loved the Cashew Milk my second Sample. The trouble was the nutrition sign was not working. The employee tried to fix it to no avail. I just had a small amount today. I definitely will return for the Cashew Milk. I need to know how much ingredients is in my portion. The taste was great. It was Chocolate. I'm surprised there aren't many reviews. I read the negative reviews also. This was my first experience. I'll be returning. I understand they didn't have hot deserts today. They do offer warm brownies and pie. The employee told a customer that the oven was not working. I hope if they have mechanical problems they remedy them quick. I like to know what I'm eating. My sister and I were enjoying a great Saturday night in the city. We had just finished eating our dinner at Raising Cane's in Harlem. We brainstormed on what we would have for dessert and we chose to go to 16 Handles. It was my suggestion after remembering this establishment being recommended last year. As soon as we entered, we noticed a staff member with red hair taking out the garbage bag from the garbage bin by the front door. If two customers enter your place of business and you are by the front door, I think you would say "hi" or "welcome". We received a serious look, not even a smile. My sister and I looked at each other, noting the lack of a greeting. We walked to the back where we picked up our cups and began to prepare our order. I had seen on google maps that this establishment had a nutella flavor so I searched for it but I could not find it. I approached the counter where I saw two staff members and after 15 seconds, I said, "Excuse me?" The staff member with red hair, instead of asking "yes?" or "how can I help you?", made a gesture with her shoulders, which I understood as "yes". In a split second, I realized I was not going to receive the best help from her so I asked the other staff member about the nutella flavor. She said it was not available so I said "thank you" and went to the machines to get another flavor. I opted for the cookies and cream & a chocolate flavor. As I was adding my toppings, I felt something push me and when I looked to my left, I saw the staff member with red hair walking behind me with a garbage bag over her shoulder. Basically she hit me with the garbage bag and she chose not to notice. As she was heading to the front door, my sister remarked "you can at least say excuse me". I noticed the staff member turned around and made another gesture like daring her to say it again. I suggested to my sister if she wanted to leave and find another place but she really wanted her frozen yogurt. When the staff member with red hair approached the counter, I asked her, "Miss, are you having a bad day?" She asked me why. I responded by saying that it seems she was in a bad mood. My sister chimed in and mentioned how she hit me with the garbage bag. She apologized but we took it as an insincere apology. She rang us up and we left. I worked in an establishment where I had to interact with customers and also clear out the garbage bags. I was always known for greeting every customer and always going above and beyond because as a place of business, you want the customers to come back. Also a tip for when you're clearing out garbage, one should carry the bag in front of them so that you can see where the bag is and make sure you don't hit anybody or anything as you're making your way outside. I finally got to try one of the city's most popular fro-yo chains! I arrived at 16 Handles around 5pm on a Tuesday. Luckily, I was the only one in the store at the time. The staff allows you to sample the flavors but they dispense it for you. I'm sure they have a good justification for this, but I feel pressured to limit the flavors I sample (maybe that's the reason, haha). The environment in this 16 Handles is very comfy and trendy with lots of room to sit and chat. I looked through Yelp to find some of the more popular flavors and tried the graham cracker and cake batter. The graham cracker truly tasted like one, and since I prefer sweet flavors, that was a bit bland for me. The cake batter was right up my alley and that's what I ended up getting topped with cookie dough. The consistency of their yogurt is solid yet creamy, which I enjoyed. The topping station is well-stocked and has a wide variety of options. My yogurt ended up being ~$4 ($3.92) which I felt was standard. I like the variety of flavors and the yogurt consistency here at 16 Handles and can see myself becoming a regular! When certain employees work they lock the doors PRIOR to 10:30pm. They're supposed to close at 11pm. We walked over a mile to get there in plenty of time. There were a dozen people inside still getting ice cream and paying but the guy by the front door was putting up the chairs and refused to unlock the door. So we called to double check the hours. The employee inside the store said when there is only 2 of them staffed they lock the doors early so they can start cleaning. Fine whatever then change your hours to show you close at 10:30pm so people don't waste their time. This is the UES everyone is walking to the store not driving. This was my first time at 16 Handles in NYC. I have one less then 5 minutes from me. The reason I went into 16 handles in New York City was to get dairy free frozen yogurt for my sister-in-law who is Lacto- intolerant it would be a treat for her. The set up was exactly like the one by my place. You walk in and the store is long and narrow. There is seating all along the right side. In the front were some counters and the fixings bar with the check out area. In the back is the actual frozen yogurt machines, yogurt cups, cones and warm cookies. The choice for DAIRY FREE was BANANA BREAD. The girl working the front gave us a sample. It was amazing! I couldn't even tell the difference from the dairy frozen yogurt. . The other choice for me was a no brainer, PISTACHIO. That's my favorite. I'm not lacto intolerant. It happened to be a warm day and these two flavors were really delicious together. I added mini chocolate nonpareils and mini chocolate chips. I ate every bite and this became my lunch. My sister-in-law just stuck with the non dairy Banana Bread and was very happy. There was a large assortment of toppings to choose from. Anywhere from Gummy Bear's to lychees. There was chocolate syrup, hot fudge, marshmallow topping, and Caramel topping, chopped up candy bars, fruits, chopped nuts you name it. The staff was very nice. When I arrived it was slow, within a short while it got packed. What I was surprised about and not familiar with because our 16 Handles doesn't do it the same way. They put both cups of yogurt together and weighed them. I don't think it should've be done that way it's not a fair pricing. I also belong to the 16 handles rewards program and the girl looked at me and said we don't offer that.. That was really strange too. Visited 16 Handles for the first time around 9:30pm on Thursday. It was busy for a Thursday night. The store is spacious with seating in the front of the store and froyo machines towards the back. There are plenty of flavors, but not a lot of non-dairy options. I got the watermelon froyo with vanilla wafers and fruit loops. The froyo was good. Dropped in tonight around 10 and the place was jumping! Metallica's Enter Sandman was playing, ball game was on the large flat screen, old and young were enjoying their tasty treats. This is one of the locations that's more filled with screaming children than annoying 90 pound girls that just came from the gym, so it depends on which group bothers you more to determine whether or not you will enjoy your experience here. I am able to block all that out once I get a free sample cup and get to trying all the flavors, so I don't mind much. In terms of the actual yogurt, toppings and service, this one is just as good as all of the others. One thing you can't deny about 16 Handles is their consistency, not just in appearance in most cases, but in their product and their execution. One different thing about this one though is that they also sell fresh baked cookies for some reason. I haven't tried them, but I feel like a better idea would be to get some yogurt here and then go two doors down to Insomnia for some likely better cookies. What I got - I tried cake batter, key lime, NY cheesecake, sweet tart, and Tahitian vanilla Taste - some of the flavors were great and some were just completely off. I'll admit; I'd always been a loyal Red Mango fan and quietly boycotted all other froyo places because... well, I don't have a good reason other than brand loyalty. They have TONS of unique flavors with bizarre names; all were very delicious! As is true of most froyo places, they provide little condiment cups for you to sample a flavor before committing to a pound of it (What? Doesn't everybody eat froyo by the pound? Anyway....) The flavors I tried were birthday cake, graham cracker, cookies and cream, and something to the effect of butter pecan; every one of them was DELICIOUS! They also had tons of toppings too, including things I'd never seen at a froyo place, like rainbow cookies and waffle cone pieces! Again, as is true of most froyo joints, they charge by weight. The young manager who sat on her phone in the customer area asked that my friend's and my kid take their feet off the stools. We complied. I have introduced many people to the deliciousness of choose your own size and quantity of toppings at THIS LOCATION 16 Handles; however, over the past three years, things started to go south at THIS 16 HANDLES LOCATION: - Employees at the register AT THIS 16 HANDLES LOCATION insisted that all cups to be weighed are on the scale at one time, thus charging the customer for the weight of the cups going against NYS law for tare weight, and if asked not to do this, they would yell at you. - THIS 16 HANDLES LOCATION eliminated the 16 Handles rewards card, insisting you download a 16 Handles App on your mobile phone, and then NOT giving points for purchases for various reasons. - THIS 16 HANDLES LOCATION took my 16 Handles system-wide gift card and converted it to their own gift card only good at locations owned by the same franchiser, thus pocketing the 16 Handles corporate money into their accounts. (A sternly written letter to their corporate office managed to get this reversed and now they deny it ever happened!) - THIS 16 HANDLES LOCATION substituted several 16 Handles Fro-Yo mix with cheaper brands. - THIS 16 HANDLES LOCATION substituted 16 Handles cups & spoons with look-a-like products instead of the 16 Handles branded items. - On my last visit to THIS 16 HANDLES LOCATION, the cashiers refused to treat the 16 Handles gift cards like cash or credit, disallowing me from getting rewards points (which was corrected by writing to the corporate office). - The owner of THIS 16 HANDLES LOCATION is obviously complaining to Yelp every time I post this review in an attempt to cover up his actions. I do understand that in NYC, frozen desserts are certainly a seasonal thing, as long lines out the door in the middle of summer conversely turn into thumb twiddling sessions for the employees in the dead of winter, so costs must be recuperated during the warmer months. However, the price at 16 Handles is indeed a bit steep for what you get. What would normally run about $3-4 (a medium sized serving for one) back home in CA ended up coming in at a tad over $6! Now, coming from an area with an equally expensive cost of living as NYC, I am rarely in sticker shock when in town, but this is the first time I've felt that something was truly, as the famous movie line goes, "More than you can afford, PAL!" Yes, I know that in CA, yogurt can be had year round, so pricing is indicative of that, and it is difficult to compare, but this doesn't explain why other cold items such as ice cream or smoothies don't cost twice as much here as in other areas. With that said, 16 Handles does serve up a pretty good selection of yogurt and toppings. It took me the longest time to figure it out, but the name is in reference to the amount of flavors, and of course, the actual handles on the machines. I also like how there is a booming system bumpin' 90's pop and R&B that makes you yearn for better days. There is competition in the form of Pinkberry two doors down, but it is much smaller, with less flavors. read more
