I've been coming to Eddie for the last 6 years. He has given me great service every time I came here. His prices are great. $55 for the Smog check is a great price. This last time I had a problem with my battery on my vehicle and it didn't pass. He helped me with my connector prblem on my battery and reset and told me to run the car 30 miles without turning off and bring back he will retest it. Did what he and it worked and didn't charge me for the retest. Great guy and a great business. I will be recommended this place all day to anyone looking for a Smog Check. read more

My father and I have been going to 16 Minute Smog since the mid 90's and have always received great service from Eddie (the owner). I referred my wife and her cousin there as well. The name of this garage is not an exaggeration; unless you go on the weekend or there is somebody ahead of you, Eddie will complete your test and have you out of there in about 15 minutes. I probably would have given 16 Minute Smog 4 stars but I've been a loyal customer for many years and felt compelled to try to offset the undeserved 1 star review from the other gentleman. So let me get this straight. You call a small business and ask for the lowest possible price. The hardworking proprietor gives you that price, and you try to haggle him down even more. Then, you get butt-hurt because he was understandably rude with you and you feel you're entitled to attack his livelihood. Not cool, and not what these reviews are intended for. I've been taking my car to Eddie Hwang since 2009. My car is over ten years old and has only 66k on it. It has been meticulously maintained. Eddie has done 3 smogs tests on my car. All three were cheap ($45 in 2009, $55 in 2011, and $65 8 days ago). No one can praise his shop for being clean. His shop is dirty. No one can praise his shop for treating your car like he would want someone to treat his. He doesn't. He throws smog cords on windshield. Lifts wiper arms. Then slams arms on cord and windshield. Not to mention that your car will pass at any and all costs. Because if you car does not seem hot enough, this guy will floor your car for about 5 minutes so that catalytic converter will be so hot that it will pass. Even if your car has borderline failure tendencies, he will make sure it pass. No matter what type of damage he does to your car. Also, he has the tendency to stop whatever he's doing to whomever car if someone pulls up in the crowded parking lot that is shared with at least two other businesses or if Eddie's business phone rings. Eddie is about quantity of customers over quality service. No one can dispute these facts. Honestly, two of the reasons I took my car to Eddie are that he's cheap and he's fast, with which all reviewers can totally agree. Nothing more. Nothing less. Depending on how the smog is going, he will make small talk with you if you initiate it. If it's going great and you are going to pass, he's going to have an illusional friendly disposition. But we all know that great customer service or bad customer service betrays when a problem arises. This was proven true 8 days ago. 8 days ago, I brought my car in for a 3rd smog test. Everything seem to go well and I passed with flying colors. He gave me the thumbs up. As I proceeded to walk over to the desk, he told me "Get out! Don't ever come back here. You reset computer." I am utterly flabbergasted by his behavior. This guy went from quiet to treating me like I just victimized him or something. Unbelievable! So as I try to get a question in edge wise as to what he is talking about. He tells me that "you disconnect battery" and "you lie." I stay calm and try to get him to elaborate articulately as to one minute my car passes and the next it fails. I get a good look at paper and it says I passed "emissions test" and "visual test." But car failed "functional check" (specifically "OBD System Checks"). The message for failing was "This vehicle did not pass the OBD system check because its OBD system was not ready to test." He then throws my smog tests results in trash and says "Don't come back here. The computer is reset." So I walk away amd ignore this guy. As I proceed to get in car, another customer question's Eddie as to what is going on. He proceeds to elaborate his opinion to this customer. But failed to tell me anything. I drive down street, park, then access google on my phone. I google "failed OBD system checks," then I come up with a great deal of information that a smog technician such as Eddie could've easily provided me, instead of being rude and unprofessional. A vehicle will not pass OBD tests if the cars battery was disconnected, died, undercharged, and the like. Also, if someone used an OBD2 tool to reset malfunction codes, the vehicle will fail a OBD 2 test, provided that the vehicle did not complete a driving cycle after the reset. Ultimately, whenever there is a loss of power to vehicle or the obd 2 codes were cleared from vehicle, the vehicle must complete a full driving cycle to be obd 2 test ready. I found this out 5 minutes after I was thrown out of this man's shop. I'm not sure how long he's been doing smogs. But I will take a wild guess that he's been doing this for at least a decade. So he could have easily explained this to me in laymen's terms instead of saying "get out....you lie." I will never come back to this guy, period. BTW, my battery was never disconnected, OBD2 codes never reset, etc., by me or anyone I know. Nothing. If there was a momentarily power loss to my vehicle or anything else that would have reset computer, Eddie's negligence had something to do it, knowingly or unknowingly. Today, 8 days later, and about 100 miles of driving later, I called another place that has at least 20+ 5 star yelp reviews more than Eddie. Before I went to this other place, I told the guy that I failed "OBD System Checks" by another smog place. He told me that he can check if my computer is ready before I commit to a smog. I went down there. he checked for free. My computer was ready. So he did smog, it passed with flying colors. I paid $15 less than Eddie charged me. Not to mention this other guy treated my car like a million bucks. Needless to say, that's my new smog home. I will never go to Eddie again. read more

Eddie is a great person to work with. He has always taken good care of myself as well as friends and family. He is fast and very affordable. He's the owner so he won't BS you or give you the run around like many other smog guys (he could also help cut a deal with pricing sometimes). This guy is an ass at best, granted I have an old lifted truck but he went bi polar when he couldnt figure out the shifter, so I put the truck on for him. when I asked how much he said $80 because its lifted wtf how does that work. In all honesty I was going to give him $100 even though the smog should have only been $60 ish but then he snapped. and said get out...screw him, we should report him to bbb and aqmd for his questionable practices and discriminatory pricing. Disclaimer: I never actually got a smog check here, but my review is based off our brief yet rude telephone conversation. I called this place earlier today to get a quick price quote, and this is how the conversation went: Me: Hi, how much do you charge for a smog check? Eddie: Hmmm... well.... the lowest I could go is $45. Me: I see, is there any way you could go any lower? Eddie: No I cannot ... BYE One of the character traits I despise most in people is rude behavior. Eddie could have simply said he couldn't go any lower in price, or maybe that he had another customer waiting. The "BYE" he gave me at the end was unnecessarily inpolite, hasty, and harsh. Trust me when I say it was so off-putting that I felt the need to immediately get online and write a negative review to punish him. Rude service = bad business. 1 star read more

Fast and efficient customer service! My car didn't pass smog the first time, but I wasn't charged the full amount for a second smog test.

I needed a smog and wanted to go somewhere close to the office that offered pass or free retest. I called ahead to make sure. I passed the emissions test however he failed me based on the visual test (done after emission test). He explained I had the wrong catalytic converter in my car that the serial number doesn't match and that there should only one catalytic converter not two. He then tried to get me to go to the muffler guy on the same lot as him and pay them to remove one of the catalytic converters. So I go to my mechanic to confront him and he pulls up the CA emissions website and points out that I do in fact have the correct part for my car and that yes there is supposed to be two. I drive all the way back to 16minute smog and apprise him of his information. At first he didn't believe me but I had printed out the page from the CA emissions website and high lighted my part numbers. He finally said "sorry my mistake" and did the retest,then had the nerve to ask me for $20. My response was, "you just apologized and admitted to the mistake why would I pay $20?" His response, "ok ten dollars." I threw two $5 dollar bills on the counter and left. Never again will I use this place and you shouldn't either. read more

I have been using Eddie's shop for at least 5 years rotating three vehicles through as their Smog Checks came due. Even when there is a car ahead of me I am always out within a half hour. Eddie is always talkative and in a good mood. Prices are fair and reasonable.
