Newly designed 168 Asian Mart: One of my favorite things to do is take people on what I jokingly call international food tourism around Metro Detroit. Not because I'm trying to convert anyone into a foodie. I simply enjoy watching people discover how much of the world exists beyond the handful of grocery aisles they've known their entire lives. For many Americans, walking into an authentic international market can be surprisingly intimidating. We become accustomed to recognizing brands, labels, and packaging. Remove that familiarity and suddenly a routine grocery trip becomes an exercise in navigation. My route usually starts in Clawson at Noble Fish. Anyone who only knows Noble Fish today would have a difficult time understanding what it used to be. The original operation was tiny. You walked into a modest Japanese grocery store and somehow found one of the best sushi counters in Michigan tucked away inside. The closest comparison I can make is the scene from *Wayne's World* when Wayne opens a random door and discovers a room full of highly trained ninjas. You weren't expecting it, which somehow made it even better. Over the years demand did what demand does. The restaurant grew. The market grew. White Wolf arrived. Additional space was absorbed. What was once a small hidden destination has evolved into something much larger while still maintaining the character that made people seek it out in the first place. From there I usually take people to the plaza where ZZang's BBQ is located. I call it the toy store. The plaza contains restaurant supply stores, bakeries, specialty grocers, and enough cookware to make most home cooks reconsider their life choices. There are roasted meats hanging in windows, commercial equipment sitting on shelves, and ingredients most people have never seen before. For newcomers, it is often the first moment they realize these foods were never designed for tourists. They were built for communities. The next stop is H Mart. By this point people have usually relaxed. The initial hesitation disappears and curiosity takes over. Instead of asking what something is, they begin asking how it's used, how it's prepared, and what they should try first. Then we arrive at 168 Asian Mart. Located in Madison Heights on John R Road, 168 has become one of the largest Asian grocery destinations in Michigan. Recent expansion and renovation have transformed the store into something far beyond the market many people remember from years ago. The footprint has grown dramatically, the selection has expanded, and the new food hall has turned the location into a destination rather than simply a place to shop. What I appreciate most about 168 is that it serves as a culmination of everything people experienced throughout the day. The market itself represents dozens of cultures and cuisines under one roof. The food hall allows visitors to sample dishes from across Asia without committing to a full restaurant experience. Just outside, the neighboring plaza connects visitors to an authentic Lebanese marketplace and restaurant, creating an experience that extends well beyond a single grocery store. What starts as a shopping trip often becomes something else entirely. People arrive worried about buying the wrong thing, unable to read half the packaging, and unsure where to begin. A few hours later they're filling baskets with ingredients they had never heard of before and discussing what they plan to cook when they get home. That transformation is probably why I keep bringing people here. Not because the markets are exotic or that the foods are unusual. Because every trip reminds people that entire communities, traditions, and cuisines have existed around them all along. They simply hadn't taken the time to walk through the front door. This review is for the 168 BBQ and restaurant section of the store, located in the back, inside the store. The 168 restaurant offers a large selection of prepared Chinese dishes sold by the pound - meats, vegetables, noodle dishes, including fresh warm soy milk. You can also place an order for items pictured on the wall by number. We placed an order for the duck soup $10.99 - duck was good but soup broth wasn't flavorful and noodles weren't fresh and were overcooked. It came in a carry out bowl, comparable to an XL size instant ramen bowl. Service in this area was ok, the cashier taking the order was impatient because we could not understand what she was saying and thus took longer to place the order. BBQ - we ordered the roast duck rice meal which came with a lot of rice, chopped duck pieces, steamed green veg and a small container of sauce. Duck meat was very tasty but very cold, and deceivingly a small amount of meat in the meal because it was full of bones. Regardless it was still a decent value for $8.98. Service was quick, but a bit unfriendly as well. I would come back to buy the roasted meats but would buy whole or large cuts (I.e. whole duck, whole chicken), cut it up myself to minimize bones in each bite and warm it up at home. read more

We tried the new food court concept here. I loved it! It was so much fun going to different windows to try so many new items. We got a few items from Cheng's dim sum. I got some sticky rice, a beef rice roll, fried sticks, and tofu skin rolls. From Tabe sushi we got a tempura chicken roll. From Yuan Yang, we got chicken skewers, a chicken sandwich, and two drinks, a mango pomelo sage and watermelon coconut water drink. It was all pretty good, some a bit more expensive than others, but we will definitely be back to try more. We cannot wait to try Mala Town and the yet to open Thai food stall. I was also happy to see the main store food court area is still available. We ordered a to-go plate for my other child. She wanted crawfish. It was such an amazing deal, we got 2.5 pounds of spicy crawfish for $20! You can see the photo below. It was so large, they put it in a metal tray and I needed a box to get it home. Although three of us were eating it, it was quite literally party sized. I love all of the updates they are doing here, including creating a new grab-and-go area where they were placing sushi from the food court, and their updated toy section in the front. It seems like they are making a lot of positive changes here. I do miss the old area near the bakery where you could get Halo Halo. This place is so massive that it's a little overwhelming. Nevertheless we found our fresh chongqing noodles, chile crisp, hot mustard, potstickers and vegetable spring rolls rather quickly and were on our way. We had help from a nice lady at the register and also from a pleasant young man at the food court where we purchased some steaming hot noodles to try. We saw things we will never eat (lumps of pig blood) and many that we want to try another time (dim sum items, lots of fish, and a good selection of bakery products). read more

168 Asian Mart had become the best Chinese supermarket in the state. I like the renovations and expansion. The store is now more spacious and cleaner. They are currently resurfacing the parking lot. 168 Mart would probably do a quicker and better job of fixing our roads than the state. There are now a lot more items to choose from, mostly Chinese but also a lot of Korean and Vietnamese items. I like the Chinese bottled tea drinks and the frozen dumplings and noodles. Fruit and vegetables look fresh. I typically don't buy meat and seafood here but there is a lot of variety more so than at Western supermarkets. I hope they do improve the freshness of the meat and seafood because I didn't think it was that fresh several years ago. 168 Asian Mart has also led to the growth of more Asian businesses in Madison Heights. Came to try the new expanded Food Hall. Multiple restaurants all with individual order counters and a large expansive shared eating space inside the grocery store. We tried several items from multiple places. All good! From Yuany Ang: milk tea, chicken skewers and potato tornado. Chicken was super tasty but the mayo and ketsup served on side was tricky to utilize. From Chengs: garlic and chive pancakes were delicious but wish they had been served with sauce or given soy sauce. From Mala Town: my friend loved her shrimp bowl and was super impressed with quantity and price. From Tabe Sushi; got a California roll, cucumber roll and Tabe Roll (Chilean Sea Bass) to go. Love 168, but FYI it's in the middle of a HUGE renovation to become the 168 Super Center with a Food Court/Hall and everything! It's also getting QUITE the glow up, glam update. What used to be the entrance is now the exit only, so the new entrance means it's very much expanded. However, in its interim state, it doesn't look like everything is out yet and signage isn't added so it's a bit of a treasure hunt. They still have all the pieces though - the bakery, the hot food/BBQ spot (in the back right now), as well as the meat department. They, however, are NOT adding more registers (as of yet it seems) so there's still a bit of a wait but it moves quickly. Looking forward to this renovation being complete, although no est. date was given! read more

This is a massive Asian market with aisles and aisles of food that you are not going to find at the local Kroger. Everything is grouped by type and country. You have fresh fruits and vegetables of every type possible, I have no idea what most of them were. They also have a fresh food area with a small dine in section where you can order food and sit and enjoy it. If you need a specialty ingredient for your Asian recipe, you will most likely find it here. The only drawback for me is it was so big it was a bit overwhelming. I'd like to get better at figuring out how to utilize more ingredients. read more

3 entree bento box for $9.99. Highly recommend! They have a variety of different entrees to choose from but I always go for the chili fish, shrimp with mushroom and zucchini, and chicken with mushroom in oyster sauce. All delicious and flavorful. They also have a menu for made to order. read more

I have visited 168 Asian Market a few times looking for specific items such as egg roll wrappers, various juices, fruit, and snacks. Anything you want, this Asian market has it from spices to specialty items, produce, drinks, and any other grocery needs. I was unaware that there is a hot food court available in the back of the market. Every Chinese dish you crave is available. They will also cook seafood you've purchased in the market for you. On this visit I ordered a scrumptious bowl of bok choy and mushrooms. I also ordered dumplings. All of it was amazing and fresh. I purchased squid and shrimp from your food court, and both my wife and I have been vomiting continuously since consuming it. I have already contacted customer service to report this issue and request that your food items be checked. This is very concerning--if children had consumed this food, it could have been life-threatening. I have preserved the remaining food, and I plan to submit it to the Michigan health department on Monday for laboratory analysis. Still wide selection of Asian goods and wares, one cafe with interesting Asian cuisine selections and random goods stores located in the front (although most were closed on a Sunday). There are deals to be had if you're flexible on what type of produce you want to cook with. The staff doesn't speak English. My suggestion if you're trying to find an item completely foreign to you is that you look elsewhere. They 100% will always say "no English" if you ask which aisle the item is in. The seafood counter is well stocked in the same way as H Mart. There are tons of previously frozen fish with cloudy eyes hanging out on ice at a discount. As a first time patron who drove out of the way to check it out, my experience was sub par. I'll stick with Evergreen Supply. They have a cooked duck/pig counter and are very willing to help locate ingredients while seemingly grateful for my business. read more

Whether I'm grabbing some Filipino banana ketchup, spicy vinegar, and longanisa, or grabbing some insanely cheap and satisfying Chinese pastries, or eating at their in-house restaurant, I love this place. My favorite go to items at the restaurant you say? I usually go for the 2 meat chinese bbq with veggies and white rice. The roast pork with crunchy skin and the roast duck are an unbeatable combo, especially for around $11? It's an insane steal. I'm a visitor to Michigan and a local suggested me to come here for fresher veggies and more affordable prices. She was pretty accurate. I liked it here! First I went to the Food Court (it's at the end of aisle #1, inside the market). I ordered lamb with tortilla and a side of bak choy. The wait time wasn't too long. All food tasted good. Though the tortillas were those regular Mexican ones and I was expecting Chinese ones. Then I walked through almost the entire of the store and found so many items that I barely saw at other Asian grocery stores. Pig blood for example. I'm glad I can finally make pig blood soup that I ate growing up in Taiwan. Glad they have the pickled veg soup mix to go with. Also got Taiwanese crackers and Asian breads and pastry. It's convenient that the bakery shop doesn't have its own checkout area because I'm too lazy to check out twice. Some down sides of this place are that they have a very limited selection of soy milk. Usually the Asian stores would have soy milk of a variety of flavors such as red bean, sesame, matcha and black tea. And this place only has sugar and unsweetened soy milk. Wish they had more flavors. Also I was going to get snow pears since its price was low, but I realized the ones there were actually a different type of pear (sand pear). Be careful and don't get tricked. There is a restroom at the back of the market (on the opposite end of the checkout area). Overall I like this store better than H Mart because it's more affordable and has more unusual variety of goods. However this store is less clean than H Mart and they don't have many ready-to-eat meals/dishes like H Mart. I wish they could have more of these in the future. They do have braised products like braised pork feet in the fridge next to milk and eggs. I would definitely come to here often if I ended up living in this area! There is a famous boba shop in the same block of this place called Tiger Sugar and I got boba from there too. It was a nice day to have good food and Asian groceries from this place and a boba nearby. read more

Look if you aren't used to strong smell associated with ethnic /asian cultures and you have a soft stomach and are easily offended this place isn't for you. You can LITERALLY see the fish alive in tanks swimming below the sections of fresh fish on ice. Plus items like different tripes and all other odd animal parts/products you won't find in your typical American grocery. I live it! They have their foods also seperated by country ( Chinese , Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino etc) Cookware and personal products. Sake and beer. Fresh produce. I bought a jack fruit on the 14th of June, the 16 it has mold all over it, so I cut it up and its hard, white and tasteless in the inside. So just in two days the jackfruit went bad but not ripe . Both very tasty and fresh. I wanted to get a few pieces of the lobster but they require a minimum of one pound ($13.99). I was craving a savory zongzi, having just had one on a recent trip. A zongzi consists of sticky rice with different fillings like fatty pork, green beans, Chinese sausage, chestnuts, dried shrimp, salted egg yolk, etc. wrapped in bamboo leaves before being boiled. The recipe differs based on the preferences of the cook. A sweet version exists (without the add-ins) but the savory version is far better. A friend assured me that 168 Asian Mart sold them so on a recent day off, I was off to find them. 168 Asian Mart is a large grocery store that specializes in foods from the Far East. Fresh produce line the perimeter of the store. A bakery section features a variety of buns and refrigerated cases hold noodles, tofu, and other fresh ingredients. In the center of the store, there are a number of packaged goods - and crispy egg roll cookies - a childhood favorite. I picked up some sweetheart cookies (not as good as the ones that I grew up having), a caterpillar bun (so named because it was long) filled with cream, a yummy coconut bun, and a pineapple custard bun. Since I was tired of cooking, I was more interested in two areas of the store, the ones that sold roasted meats and a take-out/cafeteria area. Whole roast ducks, roast pig, and salted chicken hung behind the Plexiglass shield. They all looked tempting and while my eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach, I resisted and only purchased the roast duck and not any of the other items. Within the take-out area, shoppers pointed to the items they wanted while the counterperson filled their containers. I went the other way and ordered from the menu: won tons, braised beef with noodles (choice of rice vermicelli, thick noodles, won ton, udon, or pho), and mini meatball buns. There is a small cafeteria for those who want to eat in; I chose to take my bounty home to feast. Additionally, after roaming the store, I found the zongzhi in a refrigerated case and a mango-flavored mille crepe cake. The latter was significantly less expensive than what I am accustomed to. I have to give the store credit for amassing a variety of products for shoppers who want to cook authentic tasting meals. However, I thought the store was crowded and disorganized in some areas (merchandise was dumped on the floor) and the wait time for the food was inordinately long. Next time, I will know to order the food first before shopping to reduce my wait time. read more

My family comes here for the cheap vegetables. They have great prices and sales all the time on your Chinese staples like Napa cabbage, yu choy, bitter melon and more. They are constantly restocking their produce on Saturday mornings when it's the busiest. Bakery items are pretty good. Have yet to try their food court. It's usually always packed on the weekends and it's hard to navigate your shopping cart sometimes as there's always people in the way. Compared to Asian grocery stores I've gone to in Markham, Ontario, this does not even meet the same standard of organization and cleanliness; but it's Michigan where the Chinese population is small, so it's better than having no where to go to for your Chinese staples. read more

I absolutely love this store! They have such anlarge variety of items from various countries. The best part is that the price label has the item written in English. My husband will definitely have to come with me next time because there was an entire aisle of ramen. My favorite section has to be the candy and snacks. They have some really unique items. Some items I saw and recognized from Japan crates I purchased in the past. There is a food court in the back. You can find the seafood section right next to it. They have a lot od fresh vegetables and fruit (fresh durian too!) We has to stop by the ice cream section to look for my husband's favorite Mochi. I will definitely be back in soon! read more

In terms of selection, 168 is the best Chinese market in Michigan, and it's not even close. Produce, meats, seafood, pastries, rice, noodles, baozi, sauce/spice, kitchenware, booze, snacks, drinks, etc. We travel here (80 minute drive each way) every couple months for a big shopping trip. One of the coolest features is they have a small cafeteria in the back with a lot of options and decent pricing. At our most recent visit we had: * 热豆浆 (hot soy milk) * 麻辣烫 (spicy soup bowl) * 米线 (rice noodles) * 煎饼果子 (Chinese crepe) Attaching photos to this review.
