Gosh, they have two kinds of sesame balls AND two kinds of egg tarts! And they were so good. Kind, efficient service. Highly recommend.

My dad went out early in the morning and came back with several pastries this Monday. My mom and I were excited to enjoy them with pour over coffee at home. TARO ROOT BUN 芋頭飽 Meh, really flavorless and dry. I wasn't sure what I was eating. The layer of taro paste was so thin. If you blindfolded me, I wouldn't have known there was taro in this pastry. Not good. PINEAPPLE BUN 波蘿飽 Also dry and just eh. The pineapple crust was just sweet, but no other fragrant flavors. Bun was also a bit stale along with being flavorless. SPONGE CAKE 紙包蛋糕 After the above two pastries, I had very low expectations for the sponge cake (pretty classic Cantonese pastry wrapped in paper). Fortunately, this was incredibly light and fluffy, and went well with the pour over coffee. I ate the whole thing and saved the second one for this morning, two days later. Yum. Pricing is fair, I think it was $2 per pastry, and it's pretty sizable. Besides the sponge cake, I wouldn't get the other two again. Taipan used to be pretty good growing up, but this Monday was disappointing. My mom said Taipan is her favorite for pastries, so I'm not sure what that says about the other Chinese bakeries in the area. read more

Umm I don't know what happen. Their bread taste like nothing. It is not sweet and has no flavor. Also the texture is tough to chew., not tough like gum but not normal for Chinese bread. Tai Pan is quickly climbing the ranks as my favorite Asian/Chinese style bakery. When we stopped in we got a whole smattering of sweet treats, and honestly they were all a win. But the pineapple breads and buns and the coffee cake? I will be back for those, one million times over. Texture was great, sweetness level perfection - no notes, just a great eating experience. Tai Pan is not self service like most other Chinese bakeries - instead you order at the counter off a menu and from the display cases around the store. The store is quite small, in the customer area, you can't fit more than a couple of people. They have all the normal breads/buns that you would expect in a bakery of this type. They only accept credit card above $10, otherwise it's cash only. Pineapple Bun ($1.70) - The bun has good sweetness and crumb density. The cookie top is typical of a decent, but not great pineapple bun - good flavor, but quite thin and more floury than crackly or crunchy. Pineapple Red Bean ($1.90) - The bread itself is pretty much the same as the normal pineapple bun, except shaped more like an oval. The red bean paste inside is sweet, and quite smooth. There's a kind of gelatinous texture which is a bit different than other red bean pastes I've had. Overall, the buns here are similar quality and price, but quite a bit smaller compared to Tai Pan's main competitor down the street. Tai Pan does have some items that makes them stand out - stuff like rice cakes and zhongzi. I'd definitely go again to try those out. read more

I've been searching for good asian food places for the past two years and Tai Pan Bakery is one of the few that remind me of home. The coconut cream bun reminded me of how my mom would buy a few for my dad each time we went out. The custard tarts were warm and had the perfect firmness and flaky crust. I wanted to try everything but got about 13 different items (if you buy 12 items, you get a free item (baker's dozen!). This is a must try for asian pastries. I'd be here every day (except Wednesday's since they're closed) if I lived a bit closer, but it's worth the 30 minute drive to pick up a few items every so often so I'll be back to try more. On top of it, the lady at the counter was very nice and individually wrapped each item before boxing them up! read more

Their bubble tea isn't that great but the goodies are delicious. I believe it's cash only but I cannot remember. I wanted a birthday cake for my daughter just like we had in China. The service was excellent. The buns are better than at 168 Asian Market down the street (and theirs are not bad either!). Because of weather issues, I had to ask them to move up my order a day early, and they were absolutely happy to oblige. I drove 1-1/2 hours to get the cake and it was worth every bite. BTW, the price of the cake, to me, was very reasonable. We have been back since then and will continue to support this lovely authentic bakery in Madison Heights. read more

Came for the red bean sesame balls, but sadly they were completely sold out. :( Ended up getting a coconut tart, red bean sweet rice cake with the coconut flakes, mung bean and red bean crispy balls and a durian bubble tea. The durian is the only bubble tea that's fresh and not made from syrup. It tasted decent, but the bobas were hard and chewy. The coconut tart was dry, tasty with the coconut but was too dry. The red bean sweet rice cake had too much rice dough and not enough red bean in it and the red bean was much too dry and too chunky inside. The mung bean and the red bean crispy balls were both flaky and crispy but also too dry. None of it was carb worthy and tossed them all after one small bite of each pastry. read more

Interesting place. Never really had authentic Chinese pastries until this place. Tried one of their specialty cakes with an yolk inside, super weird/interesting texture, not a fan but fun to try and always open to trying new things. I always thought I'd enjoy visiting Taiwan, because I never have both my shoelaces done - I only ever Taiwan. And I always thought I'd love the capital in particular, because I have a rich friend from Thailand and I always like the Thai pay - for everything. And I am a "Taipei" personality, you know. This is an absolutely wonderful Asian Bakery in Madison Heights with delicious chalky yummy gooey wife-cakes, which are called something else here. They also have some really yummy Custard Tarts that don't look yummy but most certainly taste yummy. Some bakeries do it the other way around - looks great, tastes meh. Tai Pan is the opposite. The milk bubble tea is just okay and it's not my favourite but I'll try some different flavors next time like the Taro Root that everybody goes on about. Really lovely service too, and had no problem with me being in there right before closing and eating my snacks sitting in there for a couple of minutes. I've been told I'm a snack too, but not as tasty as the ones I got from Tai Pan for next to no money. Tai Pan is the best bakery in the metro Detroit area! The staff is always friendly and the pastries/baked goods are delicious. I always get the ham and onion roll and my mom is a fan of the roast pork patty. The fried pork bun, the ham and egg bun, and the roast pork bun is always a go to as well. The sweet pastries are delicious as well and any time we need the asian fruit cake, Tai Pan is our go to. They are doing a great job with covid and doing their part. This is a great find in Michigan if you are looking for Asian treats. It is conveniently located across the Asian supermarket and Target. It is a small business in the plaza with plenty of parking. I believe this is family-owned as well. Plenty of selections and variety when you walk in. My favorites here are the taro buns, egg custard buns, and scallion bread. My friends really enjoy the sesame mung bean balls here too. Prices are very reasonable here (anywhere from 80 cents to $1.25). If you buy 10, you get 1 free I believe. Just remember to bring cash, as they do not take credit cards here. They will also do slushie drinks as well if you are wanting that. It is very easy to miss Tai Pan Bakery as it a small store hidden in the corner of one of the many ethnic food shopping plazas on John R but definitely is not a place you wanna miss. If you are looking for $1 - $3 freshly baked goods, this is the spot for you. Similar to the bakeries you would find in a Chicago or New York Chinatown, Tai Pan has a modest selection of both sweet and savory buns. They also have roll cakes for $8 as well as $3 bubble teas. The bakery is cash only but the prices are by far the lowest in the area (at least a quarter cheaper than the 168 Asian Mart bakery). There is unfortunately no seating in the bakery (just one booth) so expect it to be more of a grab and go spot. It definitely makes a great dessert or snack after eating at the neighboring Chinese restaurants. For those unfamiliar, I recommend the mochi balls with peanut or red bean filling or the pineapple buns. Great taste, great price, and very friendly staff! read more

The boyfriend and I were craving goodies from 85 Degree and SGV bakeries in Southern California so when we found out about Tai Pan, we were pretty excited. Thankfully Tai Pan's pastries didn't disappoint! It's cash only and inexpensive. If you're unfamiliar with Asian pastries, you should know that the flavors are subtle and less sweet than that which you may be used to when you think of pastries. My favorites are the egg tarts and egg custard buns. The tarts were satisfyingly flaky and eggy. If you've never had them, keep in mind that they'll get soggy overnight. Best gobbled up right away! Boyfriend's favorite is the cha siu bao/pork bun. He's more into savory pastries while I'm all about the sweet. Everything is labeled clearly in English. Customer service is still very good they tend to sell out of a few of the favorites so it's best to shop early or special order ahead. Been coming here for almost 20 years. They were also the OG place to get boba before the chains started popping up. I LOVE their traditional Cantonese/Hong Kong breads and their desserts and get some at least once a week. I'm happy they've stayed in business, as I much prefer traditional Chinese baked goods over the Asian-French fusion options that have opened up recently. Ding ding ding! I MAY have found a contender to replace Eastern Accents in Ann Arbor, since they're now permanently closed ... and, bonus, Tai Pan is 10 minutes from my house too. I went today for pastries. I didn't see any signs or anything for bubble tea ... possible I missed it, but I wasn't there for tea anyways. I got a chicken bun, a coconut bun, and a flaky pork bun (they were out of the roast pork) ... OMG, I'm eating the flaky one now and the top is sweet and the middle is pork. Delicious! Chicken one was good too, had some onions though which was surprising. Total for 3 pastries: $2.85. (would have been $4.50-5 in Ann Arbor) I will definitely be back! read more
