We dined on the deck last night. Service a little slow but OK. Not thrilled with dinner - fish n chips. So simple yet often so below par. In this case the chips were the wimpy dark brown kind without being crunchy ot crispy. The batter fried Pollock was almost adequate - - but, not - - oily batter crust and mushy fish. I visited over the summer here with my sister. I enjoyed the out side area which was very calming near the water. It was very pleasant vibes. First time having a meal in Maxfields. Was a cold evening and as soon as we entered I could heat live music playing. The singer was in the corner of the bar and we asked to sit as far away so that we could converse and hear each other...they sat us near the back door to the deck which was perfect. We ordered calamari for an appetizer, clams and linguine and the 12 oz sirloin as mains. Calamari was lightly breaded and good flavor. Clams and linguine was loaded with clams and lots of butter in the sauce, picture was blurry so not posted. Steak cooked to Medium Rare as requested and served with a side of mashed with veggie. Everything was good, waiter was around and checked in often. A bit loud as expected but a good dining experience nonetheless. Dinner for four including drinks was $180 plus tip. read more

1. My daughter ordered trout and was served salmon..when she told the waitress she had the wrong meal the waitresss seemed to ignore her. 2. My husband's battered fried fish, was over cooked..the batter was so hard he couldnt even eat it..the fish was over cooked and dry. 3. I had a pear salad, which I felt I had to share with my husband and daughter. 4. And last, the calamari appetizer was served with ice in the bottom layer, it was suppose to be hot. Having had several bad meals at Maxfields over the past 4 years we decided to give them another chance. In fact, I even told a male server/possible an owners son about our past dissatisfaction, in years gone past. He appropriately assured the four of us that we would be delighted with tonight's dinner. We ordered cocktails and our meals came very quickly, as there were only 4 choices to make: Trout with no heads on a plate, nothing else, two pork chop on a plate, nothing else, and two burgers on a bun and nothing else. But before dining on this minimalist dinner we started our dinner with literally rock solid burned bread. A pea, or carrot on the plate may have, I am stretching it now,may have given the chief a small bonus point for attempting the well known French nouvelle presentation that was touted to be healthy, and added a nice visual contrast to the all white plates...it failed miserably. For added entertainment we were charged an exorbitant"corkage fee" which is an added cost to wine that some high end restaurant add to the bill when the restaurant allowed the customer to bring their own wine and the establishments sommelier pours it for the customer. I gently challenged the young neophyte on the charge, and he threatened to call the local police. I guess it's a crime to educate. In all fairness to the consumer Maxfields is a good place to have a beer and burger but that's about it. Someone should explain reality to the young server, and buy him a book or two. When will we learn. You would think that you could set aside an hour for lunch and be on your way. It seems, never at Maxfields. We've been waiting over an hour and the food is just now arriving. This isn't our first time with that experience. It seems, every time we've forgotten about the delays, we stumble into Maxfield and end up waiting and waiting and waiting. So, absolutely not a place to go if you have a tight schedule. Food has now arrived and, dare I say it, it was not worth the wait The burger was adequate, the fries were soggy. The Reuben seemed like it sat under a heating lamp for a half an hour before being served. Sorry to say, but this is not a place I would return to. read more

I was excited to see this upscale looking restaurant in this small, college town. We went in for drinks one night and followed up with lunch the next day. My food was not outstanding. No, I would not recommend Maxfields. I ordered Panko crusted mozzarella locks and a French onion soup the onion soup just tasted like water and garlic, salt, there was some weird bread pieces inside, and chopped onions, with burnt mozzarella on top. Which I'm guessing they just put a torch to it after putting it in the oven. and the Panko encrusted mozzarella sticks they were extremely dry nothing special. I did call the restaurant the next day and let them know hello I didn't eat any of my food. I also mentioned to the waitress that was serving me that night that I do not like any of the food. And she said it's OK. I don't like any of it either. Like I mentioned, I called the store the next day.And the manager/head cook started screaming at me and kept asking me repeatedly what did you not like about it what's wrong with it and said to me technically, I did eat it because I tried it and he said there's no difference. I said to the man of the establishment. I'm sorry but trying the food is not eating it. And then he started yelling at me about $13. Which my food did not come out to $13. He said I will not be issuing you refund I said that is OK sir but I just wanted to let you know that I didn't like it he started screaming some more and eventually hung up on me. I called back and I said to him. Look, I'm not trying to be rude or anything. And I understand you cannot give me a refund. But an apology would be nice. So he did not apologize for the food, but he apologized for hanging up on me. And then he started yelling again which I told him, sir. I feel bad for anyone who has status because you are not a good cook. He got mad and told me never to call back again, and I will gladly not do so. He is unprofessional. And the food isn't worth the price. Edit I forgot to let you know my husband ended up getting the pasta. He said it was a five out of 10. He was hungry, so he ate it. There was more decorations, then food actually in the bowl. Some weird sauce all over the bowl. That didn't go with the dish and a lemon slice that also didn't go with it. Would I come back. There was very loud live music when I was there. We were sitting fairly far away but conversation was still nearly impossible. The staff were clearly affected by it but at least handled it well. We grew up in the North Country and were excited to come back last year and visit Maxfields! Times have changed. Our service last year was super slow. Food was pretty good but the service was lacking. Our server was rude and didn't offer refills but we were happy with the food. We were in town visiting today and were exited to walk in. Maxfields was quiet, so we went in just for a drink. The person behind the bar was the same server we had last year. We went to check out the patio to see if it was shaded enough and he stopped us to say if you're just getting a drink those tables are reserved first people eating. My sister in law didn't hear him and he said "Miss that's why I am talking to you." We left. He is a very unfriendly person and you should know he is running people off. We tried to give your restaurant a second chance and we were run off. read more

The wait staff is very nice and accommodating. Sadly the food does not follow this same trend. I have eaten her about 5 or 6 times. I would describe the food as inconsistent. The previous time I went I had a very good filet mignon. When I went back yesterday and ordered it again I expected the same thing. I received an undercooked filet that was somehow also extremely dry and bland. The mashed potatoes that came with it were also bland. Previous experiences at this restaurant showed a similar trend with the one very good time being an exception. I wouldn't be so upset about it if the prices weren't so high for the area. As the most expensive filet mignon around, it is also consistently the worst one I receive. Other food here is ok but still overpriced. I recommend dining elsewhere such as Jake's on the water or the 1844 House. read more

Very nice place with good food. Loved the exposed brick and decor. I had a cobb salad and was glad it was not an extreme portion like some salads can be. Everything was fresh and it was delicious. Myself and one other person went there for lunch on a Friday afternoon. We both ordered a burger and fries which took 45 minutes to get to us with two other tables occupied in the entire restaurant. The brick walls are nice behind the bar...secret is to hang out here for drinks in the summer on the back terrace along the Raquette River. Food is attempted upscale for Potsdam, but the place is better for drinks. I brought my family here today (11.23.19) for lunch. There were 5 of us and a toddler. After we were seated we waited 15 min for someone to check on us. Before you ask, no it was not busy (maybe 8 other patrons in a restaurant that can probably easily serve 50+ people). Once we ordered we waited another few minutes for our appetizers to come out, when they did we noticed that one of our party didn't get their soup. He didn't want to say anything though because... well I don't know because I would have. Then our food came out (all burgers) and it was: cold, bland and overall disappointing. All in all it was not worth the price and if I have the choice again I would chose the Hawaiian restaurant next door (we ate there last time we came up). All of that being said, the server was very nice if not a little slow considering how few customers were in the restaurant. The restaurant has a very good ambiance. It took a little while to be seated as the waiter was also the host. The food was very delicious but I wish they had more menu options. For the prices I feel as though we didn't have many options to choose from. The food took quite some time to come out. The crab cakes could use a tad more seasoning and the salmon was incredibly salted. I'm sure they were going for a crispy skin but they lay it in sauce that just makes it half crispy and half soggy. That was one thing I didn't like. I don't like paying for such heavily salted food. And the calamari was delicious. If you like crispy though then I wouldn't order it. read more

Bartenders are UNDOUBTABLY inappropriate and unprofessional. When I first got here, one of the male bartenders kept hitting on me and touching me inappropriately. Later on my boyfriend couldn't get served becauee the bartender was just sitting behind the bar watching the game AND even better the bar back came up to my table, TOOK MY BOYFRIENDS CHAIR WHILE HE WAS IN THE BATHROOM AFTER SHE HELPED US NUMEROUS TIMES. Took my parents and extended family here to celebrate a day of rugby, they traveled to watch me play, and left tonight knowing I will never be coming back here. Our waiter, right from the moment we sat down, was short tempered and rude. We brushed it off, whatever. When taking our drink order, he had very little patience. When I asked what they had for hard cider, he told me to "look at the menu". Hm, that was kind of rude.... and I was just asking a question he probably should have known. Next, bread came out with no plates. He came back 10 minutes later, and I asked for some plates for the bread, in which he shot back at us to wait. We ordered apps, and when he read them back, he missed one, no big deal, so I said "and fried pickles", and with what seemed like ALL of the energy in his entire body, added it. Our wings never came out as an app, and by the time half of our meals were there, they still hadn't come out. So we told him we wanted to cancel those, since the whole point was to eat them before our meal. When ordering, we stumbled over who would start, and he ignored my mom and walked over to someone else. Never took her order, walked away to another table. My dad had to go get him, in which he didn't seem to care at all. Two of us wanted burgers, and asked if they could be well done. He said back that all the meat is cooked medium to well, no matter what. When the burgers came out, red. Never took our app plates away, and when we asked if he could, he shot back that he was busy taking care of other stuff, and when my aunt suggested he use his tray to grab everything, he walked away. Never came to ask about our food. Quite literally slammed the ketchup bottle on our table. We wanted to talk to the manager, turns out he was the manager. I'm going to update my imdb.com credits list to include my appearance as "Dissatisfied Bar Patron #2" in "Friday Night in Potsdam." I think it's vaguely ridiculous to make 20-year-olds run a late shift (and wear neckties). I think it's really gross that cleaning out the beer lines isn't one of the chores on their extensive clean-up task list (performed well before closing time while their ape friends dick around like they're at a house party with no parents). Stopped in during a recent trip to Potsdam. Very crowded and in my opinion a bit understaffed. ... The lone bartender was serving drinks and waiting tables for about 60 people.... great food.....I had the scallop and bacon appetizer and was happy to get 4 perfectly cooked scallops with a delicious sweet sauce and crispy crumbled bacon on top....so much better than the typical bacon wrapped variety. For my 2nd course I had the kale ceasar salad which had lots of fresh kale and tomatoes with an inventive and delicious tangy, citrus ceasar vinegret dressing which really worked.
