Like Sandra, I really want to love this place but came away from my experience less than 100% thrilled. I too find it very strange that they don't have mirrors in front of each stylist... in fact instead of individual workstations it's set up more like a bar. So, the day I went in for my service, the place was pretty empty. They got me in & out fairly quickly which is good because I had a meeting to go to afterwards. I told the stylist that I wanted loose beachy curls and she did pretty much what I wanted. However, I was disappointed that it did not last beyond a day after the service. When I have gotten blow-outs at other shops, my hair usually stays fabulous for 3-4 days afterwards. So, for me the price was not worth looking good for just 2 days. I am not sure if I will go back next time I am looking for a shampoo & style. read more

Fantastic first time experience with Gina! My appointment was at noon and I arrived about 8 minutes early. I was immediately greeted and then seated right away, as the salon was empty. The salon is a beautiful bright white with pops of color here and there and beautiful crystal chandeliers of various sizes throughout. It was very clean as well. I also loved the little detail of real floral arrangements sitting atop the counters. Gina asked me what I wanted and I explained I wanted sleek and straight. I warned her that, although my hair is thin, my naturally curly hair tends to put up a fight. It's super frizzy too! She didn't blink an eye though. Instead she replied "We have many products here for your hair type." And then she smiled. Well she was right! Their line of Bumble & Bumble hair products worked fantastically and Gina knew exactly how to tame my hair. And FYI... She gives an amazing head massage if you're considering a deep condition (do it!) I'm thrilled to have found this place. After I checked out I was given an adorable little packet that was wrapped in B&B tissue and filled with a generous amount of samples. I made my next appointment with her immediately. I have really bad migraines if I don't blow out then straighten my hair. My hair pulls tight against my scalp. Laura did an AMAZING job getting it perfectly straight and the headache is gone. They offer you something to drink, very polite and all the customers around me were happy and looked amazing. Tip: I'm reading a lot of reviews that people aren't happy that their curls didn't stay for more than 3 days. They aren't magicians, if you have straight hair, that's just not going to happen. Be happy if it last the evening with an entire can of hair spray. read more

I really want to love this place. Who wouldn't love having their hair washed and styled so that is looks amazing? Trouble is, the service is not consistent. My first two sessions were amazing. My hair looked great when I walked out the door and stayed that way for a week...crazy! The stylist (who left to have a baby) knew instinctively what would look best and just did it. Visits three and four were good, though the next stylist needed to use a flatiron on my short hair and could not get the part correct. I was able to adjust it and would up pretty happy with the style. The fifth visit was with a new stylist who pulled my hair so harshly when washing it that I wondered if I would have any left when she finished. Then, even though my request had been for sleek and shiny, she teased my hair so that it essentially looks like a rats nest. I'm not happy. Weirdly enough, the blow dry is done not facing a mirror...so there is no opportunity for changing direction during the styling. Neither you nor the stylist know what your hair will look like until it is done and too late to make changes. I will go back...trying yet another stylist...but really? It seems to me that a place specializing in blowouts should hire people who can actually "read" hair and who listen to client requests. read more

I have crazy/frizzy/wavy hair the same as one of the other reviewers on here so I followed their advice and also booked with Gina first thing in the morning. I was going to be attending a wedding in the evening and wanted some fun curls to pin back. She was very personable and spent a bit longer working with my hair to ensure it was perfect. Walking out of there my hair had some crazy kinky curls- which she explained was so that by the time I went to the wedding my hair would calm down enough to be just how I'd wanted. I completely understood, as hair usually falls flat as the day goes by. And sure enough by the time I got ready for the wedding my hair was perfect, the curls lay closer and pinned back beautifully. It was definitely a different kind of salon. You sit in a normal salon chair at a high bar, with the mirrors behind you. I'm not sure what their exact reasoning is for having the mirrors behind you, but I kinda figured it was because it probably gets weird for the stylist to have someone sit and watch them blow dry all day. Either way it wasn't an issue for me. I would definitely come back, plus they take the Ballantyne Go card which gives you a 20% discount, which I put right back as tip. read more

Not only was my hair so smooth, shiny and with great body - I barley felt her touch my head at all. She's got such a gentle touch! I am not tender headed at all, my hair would never get brushed if that were the case, so if you are, she's got your back. My hair is long down to the lower part of my back, so thick, sooo curly and frizzy and she worked her magic and was done in 50 minutes. She even hooked me up with the name of her hairdresser so I can get a the best cut for my hair type. Ugh, love herrrr. So glad my blow dryer stopped working on me that Saturday morning. Location was awesome! Staff was super helpful, and extremely polite! They have a great product line and the set up is unique but doesn't take away from the experience! Each station has a mirror but you spend most of the time facing a bar top in front of you, where you can enjoy a drink! Went to get my hair done for prom. I had a specific style and a photo reference. I wanted exactly what was in the photo. It was a half up style with big Dutch braids coming together in the back with loose curls. The stylist seemed to understand what to do. She curled my hair in tight curls but assured me that she would brush them out later. She said things that reassured me that she knew what she was doing and there was no mirror in front of me. By the end I had tight Shirley Temple curls that got frizzy when combed through and tiny little french braids that went to the back into a little ponytail with an elastic. I specifically told her that I wanted the braids pinned and did not want a ponytail in the back. The style was nothing like I wanted and straight up looked bad. The stylist had another appointment coming in and I felt rushed out of the chair. read more

I was extremely pleased with a sleek blowout by Gina, and a regular blow out by Chae. Both ladies were very friendly and made my hair look amazing. Even with drizzly weather one day and high humidity the other day I was serviced, both times it lasted a good 3 days. This was my first time getting my hair done at 1890 Blow-Dry Bar. A few friends and I decided to get our hair done for a charity dinner. I will honestly say that I ended up having to pay $74 for something I could have done at home. My blow dry turned into an updo because I had my hair curled and afterwards just asked to pull it to the side (not on the top of my head) with a handful bobby-pins. Unfortunately, most of the curls and bobby-pins fell out before the event started which was only an hour after leaving the salon. It's an experience I can cross off my bucket list. Ladies, for the price I paid the results unfortunately did not meet expectations. My stylist did her best and was very pleasant but maybe she just was not as experienced with thick hair. I'm more than willing to pay to get my hair done if it's going to stay and certainly look good. read more

I visited for the first time today for a birthday blow out For reference, my hair is naturally wavy and falls to just above my waist in length. I had scheduled ahead and entered the salon on time. There didn't seem to be a designated receptionist so it took a minute or two for one of the stylists to leave her client to greet me and check me in, since she was busy styling. She smiled and greeted me from her station and was friendly in doing so, asked if I had appointment and I gave her the deets. She fetched my stylist from what I assume was their lounge area and said she'd be out in a moment. I used the restroom and then was seated in her designated area. Lindsay came and greeted me, introducing herself with a smile and a friendly handshake. She offered a beverage but I had brought my own. We had a quick consult and headed to the wash station. Lindsay made sure I was comfortable with the seat back and water temp and did a nice shampoo and conditioning treatment. We headed back to the chair and she made sure of the look I wanted, and we chatted a bit as she started, then we pretty much just settled into the process in amenable silence, which was fine with me. 1890 utilizes the Bumble and Bumble line of styling product. As others have noted, the floor is set up indeed as a blow dry "bar". It's sort of triangularly shaped, with clients seated along the outside facing the center. I didn't mind not seeing the process for my blow out. If I'd chosen to have more intricate styling such as an updo done, I can see how the absence of a mirror to gauge if things were on track with my goals could be frustrating. But a blow out is kind of straight forward in my opinion so it didn't bug me and I just relaxed. It's so nice to sit back and have someone else do it for you! I can do my own hair but it's challenging to get the back of my head with it being so long. It took about 30 minutes and Lindsay did a fab job She added some super volume through the crown and did my side swept bangs just right! She showed me the look when she was done and checked to see if I wanted flat ironing as well for more sleekness but I felt it was great as it was just with the dryer work she'd done. I got a cool little swag bag of Bumble and Bumble products to take home and she informed me that my second service would be half off, yay! It was a terrific start to my birthday and I will be returning in future. Kudos to Lindsay for the great service! read more

FYO. Tried 1890 Blow Dry Bar Today. Will NOT be going back. Besides the fact that their sinks don't work well and their cabinets are delaminating as if no one cares, the unsanitary conditions were worse. I watched 3 stylists take clips out of clients hair and put them back in their drawers to use again on other Clients without any cleaning, including my stylist. I also watched a stylists use the same brushes on two consecutive clients! Hello, has anyone heard of Lice and the health department. Please share. read more

I've been to 1890 Blowout a few times since moving to Ballantyne because it is convenient for me. What bothers me is their "set" price for a shamp/blowout no matter whether your hair is chin length and straight or long, thick and curly. They also seem to not be able to hold on to their staff - I can never get the same person. The lack of mirror thing doesn't bother me so much since they don't do color or cuts, but I just get a simple shampoo/blowout for my simple fine hair. It would be hard to mess that up unless a stylist had their hairdryer turned on "really hot" which apparently they can do - I had that happen to me more than once at a salon in SouthPark and it hurt so much I finally spoke up. The stylist acted like "oh, do I have it turned up that high?" Back to 1890. $39 for a very simple shamp/blowout on a "nothing special" service is too high. A package of 12 brings it down to $32, still too high for someone with my hair. A further drive to where I get my color & cut would get me a $25 blowout. They should get real with their pricing. read more

First let me say that when I was going here this place was amazing. But its kinda like dating, everything is fantastic in first month or so, right? I always had two favorites that did my hair. I paid the monthly membership for unlimited blow outs and it was fantastic. Im not going to write a long review. BUT save your money. I went in one day and it was a packed out full house. NOT A PROBLEM. HOWEVER it was filled with smoke and I couldn't breathe. I had to literally get up and leave. I looked up and the ventilation wasn't working. I was a loyal customer and I tipped very well. SO after I heard from other customers that I sent to this salon about how they were treated I knew 2 years later I had to give my honest review. Its weird that the glass is behind you SO WEIRD. Its insane to get annoyed that I come in EVERYDAY when I paid for an unlimited membership. LONG STORY SHORT I Know exactly whY I was asked not to return and its shameful. I never made a scene about this situation and I was very respectful. The blow outs are great, but It seems like they offer an unlimited package and hate honoring it. 3 other ladies told me they had the same experience and this is so sad. I enjoyed it while it lasted. BUT girls are constantly leaving bc the owner refuses to listen to the client or the stylists. I was sent a full refund of that money by cash in the mail. But it was still wrong when I was asked not to return. I was shocked let down and disappointed all bc I ask for proper ventilation due to my asthma! read more

I'm going to start this out by saying that before going to my appointment with Stacy, I had never gotten a blow out before. I thought the concept of paying someone so much to wash and dry my hair was silly... but I HAVE BEEN CONVERTED!!! My hair has never looked or felt better! My layers look better, my natural highlights are more prominent, and my hair feels like silk (3 co-workers agreed lol). My daughter had an appointment to have a blow out with volume for her senior pictures a week ago. Appointment was scheduled with Lindsay and when we arrived we were put with Dominica, who told my daughter she had only been there a month. We told Dominica that my daughter's hair does not hold curls and that we were really looking for volume. Dominica told us that with the products and by making a tighter curl that her hair would hold the curl. We said ok, but we do not want it to look like "prom hair". She proceeded to wash hair and dry it. She then started curling it and when she was almost done she walked over to me and said, "As I am standing here the curls are already falling out. What do you you want me to do? I can just straighten it." We opted for her to just leave what curl was there as we had already been there almost an hour and we could straighten it ourselves at home. She heavily sprayed what curls were left with the instruction to my daughter to not "pull them down and separate" until right before her pictures. She walked out of there looking like a disaster and with her hair not even styled and still charging us for it. Huge disappointment and waste of time. Too make it worse the salon sent a survey the next day, we filled it out with this same information, received no response and then yesterday got another email saying they missed us and know we had a great experience so go on and book our next appointment......no thanks! Get your customer service under control to address negative experiences and then maybe we will try again. read more

First of all, I made an appointment with a specific person (one that was recommended to me) and that is not who ended up doing my hair. So right off, I was disappointed. The lady that I ended up with was very nice and friendly but unfortunately, that is the end of the positive comments. It is completely WEIRD and uncomfortable to not have a mirror in front of you while someone styles your hair. You either had to look down or make uncomfortable eye contact people with everyone else having their hair done. I DO NOT understand this concept. I also told the lady - I do NOT want my hair blown out straight. My hair is naturally wavy and to wanted the natural curls enhanced with more volume. But she immediately started blowing out my hair straight and it didn't help that I couldn't SEE what she was doing. If I had been looking in a mirror like any normal hair salon, I could have said, "please stop blowing my hair out straight" My appointment was around 3pm and it didn't even last until 8pm that night.
