I've never walked in a salon before and felt like me and my stylist had an emotional friendly connection.. within 5 minutes I showed her a picture and said hey I'm brassy, I know this white level blonde takes forever to achieve, so I understand we probably can't get here today. Her response: but is it really that hard to achieve? AHHHHH I was obsessed from the moment I met her. She talked me through what she could do; she went back and broke down the price for me; it was totally reasonable compared to most salons in the area. She was totally honest and transparent; for example she never tried to push a product or service on me that I didn't need. I have never had hour long conversations with my stylist before, but after my apt with her I could picture her being in my FRIEND GROUP. I'm not even like a really personable client, but I felt so comfortable around her. She told me I was her last client of the day, but she took her time with every single step. The receptionist there was so sweet and kind when I realized I was literally the last one in there. This was a same day appointment! I'm usually pretty forgiving about haircuts as I know they grow out and there's no lasting damage, but the cut and color I got yesterday at Shine Salon were both so bad, I felt I had to warn others. My previous stylist had left so the salon reassigned me. I had requested someone with experience blending gray and got someone who I'm pretty sure hasn't done color before. She ignored the notes from the previous stylist and decided to do something different which resulted in an unnatural one color tone that looked like a helmut and had nothing to do with my natural color, or for that matter any natural color! It was hard not to cry when I got home and got a good look at it. I knew something was wrong when she was rinsing out the color and told me she either needed to add highlights (which she offered to do for free) or use CPR. The CPR, whatever it was, burned my scalp and took out any tonality or highlights that may have existed. Then the haircut...the right side is visibly longer than the left, the back is cut at an angle going up (not intentionally I'm sure) and the bangs are all different lengths. I've already had to recut them. The stylist offered the haircut for free, an acknowledgement of how bad the color was, but I'm stuck with it till it wears off. She was a sweet girl, but doesn't seem to know color or cutting and I find it troubling that she was the recommendation of the salon. I won't go back. Given that my first stylist was fine, I'd encourage you to ask a lot of questions about the stylist's qualifications before you say yes. read more

My first cut here was amazing, one of the best I've ever had! It was one of the best feelings and easy to keep cuts I've had. Awesome encounter with fantastic skills shown and seemed like a real want to produce the best possible cut. My second cut here was not even close to as good as the first experience. I'm not enjoying my cut this time. I also had a razor cut across the back of my neck. It felt like I was another person versus producing an amazing cut. Super disappointed in my service I received from Sandy on Saturday. I came in as a first time client, checked in a few minutes early. 15 minutes after my appointment I went and asked how long it would be. The woman assured me that Sandy was finishing up. I had a gut feeling I should just leave, I mean a first time client and you are late and give me no update. She finally comes out in a whirlwind 20 mins after my scheduled appointment. She basically told me she forgot about my appointment. She takes me back to her chair and starts my consult, she sounded knowledgeable so I tried to be as ease and more comfortable. I mean who isn't a bit nervous the first time a new person cuts your hair. I showed Sandy a photo (which I will add to my post) it was a highly textured cut for long hair. I spent a lot of time growing my hair out but wanted to shape it up and give it a trim to air on the healthy side for my long locks. Sandy took me over for a shampoo, she washed my hair. Many times getting shampoo in my face. She said she wanted to put a conditioner in my hair and leave it to set for 5 mins. Well I sat there with my eyes closed, finally got restless and opened my eye and see my hairstylist with another client. WHAT THE CRAP! I felt very unimportant at this point but... what do I do with wet hair. I felt committed but I was very upset. She finally came back, much longer than 5 minutes had passed. She rinsed my hair, gave me a two second scalp massage and sent me to the chair. She starts to cut and I see her out the scissors up by my nose. I said "whoa, you are scaring me! that's super short" to which she replied "oh it's fine, these are inside layers" then SNIP! I was so tense and freaking out. She revealing to me at the end and I was about to cry but I couldn't tell her. I mean what is the point, you can't put the hair back on! I now basically have bangs, hair up to my nose! My cut looks like a mullet, very short on top and super long underneath. It's awful and I'm basically having to pin it bad everyday until it grows out. He took his time and you can tell he truly loves what he does in the amount of care and time he puts in listening to you. And not in that "I'm a stylist so we have to talk" kind of way. Mark gave me the best cut and color I think I have ever had. My normally frizz prone and thin looking hair is smooth, shiny and full looking. I was referred to this salon and the stylist, Hustin, through a friend. I moved to Charlotte recently and I needed a new stylist STAT. I showed for my appointment with a photo of Drew Barrymore as inspiration for a russet red/light auburn color and corresponding cut. The appointment ended at night and when I asked for a picture from the back, Hustin told me that the lighting was bad, and the salon had already closed so we needed to get going anyway. Odd response and strange to not even get a pic after all that processing, but I did not think much of it at the time. In the dark, it looked different than expected but the styling made it acceptable enough for me to pay $280 up front with a $40 tip. It wasn't until the sun rose the next day that I truly saw the atrocity on my head. I woke up with violet purple roots, orange dip dyed ends and layers so chunky that people in my morning class asked, "WTF happened to your hair?" I texted Hustin pictures, dismayed, but still positive. I even apologized for bothering him. Surely, this was just a huge mistake. He responded saying that the orange color was his "vision" and that all balayage looks like that if it's not curled (note: balayage is a technique, not a style). He even said "Yeah I don't like that" in reference to one of the pics I sent. Not a single apology was offered to me from him. I went to Shine Salon directly the next day. The front desk/ other stylists there were extremely apologetic, warm and understanding. Chuck offered a free color correction treatment and Olaplex in order to save my hair. The simply bad work was obvious and I did receive a refund for the original service. Chuck was very sweet about everything and I would have trusted her to fix it if I wasn't so scarred from the experience. I ended up having to drive 6 hours round trip to my old stylist to fix my hair. This resulted in me needing to chop 5 inches off to even my layers and I will still need another appointment to get the color exactly where I want it again. All in all, Shine Salon is extremely professional, and I believe that there must be some quality talent there. But Hustin?! We have a problem. read more

I have finally found my forever salon, as long as i'm in Charlotte. First of all Sarah G does amazing hair! I have literally never liked my hair more, and every time she does it I feel so beautiful and like a new person. She has gotten me to try new styles and add some funky to my style. Now for the salon, the salon itself is beautiful inside. 2 levels of fabulousness. I always see Sarah G but every person I have encountered is super friendly and knows the products they sell. As for refreshments, they have coffee, soda, water, always some kind of snack like cookies, beer and wine for the 21 and up club. I really enjoy my experience everytime I get my hair done. My bridal party had hair and makeup done at Shine the morning of my wedding. The team at Shine was absolutely wonderful to work with. They let the 9 of us take over the downstairs space with room to set up lunch and mimosas plus plenty of room for us to steam dresses and hang out. It was such a pleasant experience and so much easier than trying to set up hair and makeup in a hotel room or something. On top of that, the hair and makeup professionals were incredible and everyone looked beautiful! Hair and makeup was natural and comfortable AND stayed put through my entire outdoor June wedding. I wanted to look "like myself" on my wedding day, not overly made up for the camera, and Nina (makeup) and Sarah G (hair) were so patient and attentive in my trial, helping me figure out that balance. I couldn't have been happier with how I looked and I think my bridesmaids were happy too! All in all, it was a wonderful experience and I would recommend them to any bride. Huge thanks to Nina who not only did makeup but helped me plan the schedule and book the space. Also Michelle (makeup), and Sarah G, Morgan, Blen (hair). What can I say, I always come back for more. I missed my last appointment as I was ill, so it took me a while to get back in as I am only able to get in on Saturday's and as we all know, this day always books fast. So I started my day with some love from Shine and the only man that is allowed to put sharp objects near my hair, Mark. He truly is a wonderful artist and he knows what to do with curls... my curls in particular. My curls are an evil bunch with a mind of their own frizzly kinky self - true story, as a child I would tell my mother my hair hurt just to stay home from school... didn't work, but supports that fact that they have a mind of their own. James was his assistant this past Saturday and he did a very professional job washing and adding the extra intervention needed to help my hair from committing hair suicide. He also gives a mean head massage.. yum. Okay back to Mark... since my hair was about to commit suicide, he was able to save it by cutting 3 inches off and shaping it perfectly around my face. I should have asked him to take some pics, maybe I will tomorrow after I get ready for work, I've slept on it since then, although it still looks great, it just does't reflect his technique. My Wife went to Shine Salon to get her hair colored before being in a wedding. They told her that there were different levels of experienced colorists that were priced accordingly, and she selected a $200 hair coloring job--TWICE what she usually pays. She explained to the colorist how important it was that she look great as it was her best friends wedding. When she came home she had a half inch stripe at the root that was virtually untouched, next to another stripe a bit larger of the LAST dye job, and finally the new color. She has asked my opinion of every single color and dye job she's ever gotten. This was the WORST DYE JOB I'VE EVER SEEN. She was miserable, embarrassed, furious and felt deceived. It took several strategically placed clips, bows and touch up spray to make it through the wedding. She avoided the photographer the entire time and was only in 2 photos of her best friends wedding. I can only imagine it must cost $800 - $1000 to get a good dye job at this place. RUN AWAY!!! read more

I've gone from blonde to black back to blonde then to red.... I get bored quick! I move around a lot so I'm always having to find a new local go-to spot. James did a full highlight and "glaze" to lighten my roots. It came out exactly how I wanted it! From the beginning of the appointment to the end he was making sure I was comfortable and making sure he could do anything and everything to get me to my hair goal. He suggested a cut and I jokingly told him I cry when even an inch comes off (even tho that's true) so he said we should wait. Great stylist with a great personality. The whole salon had a great personality too. The only reason for the 4 not 5 is the price. Way more than I would expect to pay (more than I've paid in NYC) but I will go back for James :) read more

I've been going to Shine for a few years now. James Vestal has been my stylist since day one and he's one of the best stylists I've ever had. His technique is on point and he really listens to what his clients want. He's also the first stylist who taught me how to style my hair after the cut rather than just leaving me to my own devices to make it look great in my everyday. I have never gotten so many compliments. Shine recently moved locations and the space is spectacular. The hair washing stations allow you to put your feet up in a reclining chair and James' head rubs are what I keep coming back for! The lobby offers free coffee, soda, or wine. And the staff is so friendly! Stephanie at the front desk is the epitome of great customer service and proves her understanding that customer relationships are not just built between the stylist and client in the chair. While the prices are not exactly cheap, you definitely are getting what you pay for. It will be a sad day if/when I ever need to find a new place to go. read more

Wow, I had a wonderful time at Shine's Blow Dry 101 class on Friday! (Thanks Nicole for planning another awesome event!) When I arrived, I was offered wine, Vitaminwater cocktails, cheese, crackers, and fruit. After group introductions, we were shampooed and paired with different stylists based on our challenges. I worked with Christina, who was awesome! She was very patient and was able to really show me how to properly straighten and blow-dry my thick tresses while minimizing the frizzies. I have always been challenged in terms of styling my own hair... manual dexterity has never been my strong suit. But to make matters worse, none of my stylists have ever taken the time out to really show me the proper methods for drying and styling my hair. But, I learned some fool-proof techniques for everyday styling that will make a real difference! I learned that I was using the wrong brushes for my hair's length & thickness, and I was thrilled to purchase the proper tools. I also was able to try a couple of new products that worked well for me and also was able to add those to my arsenal as well. Everyone at the Salon was awesome and made me feel really welcome and special - kudos to the entire team! Houston did my color (balayage and reg color- amazing!), so I ended up switching salons when he left. It's been awhile since I had my appointment at shine salon, about 6 months, and my experience still infuriates me, so I am deciding to share it now. I booked my appointment for just a cut which I was told was $60, which is fine with me. My hairs length was about half way down my back and I simply wanted it cut short to my collar bones, blunt cut, no layers or anything. As simple as it gets right? My assigned stylist was Jessica. The first thing I noticed when I got to her "station" was that it was not really a station like the others. It was literally just a long mirror laying against the wall In the very corner with a small table to hold her supplies. I told Jessica what I wanted and she took me to shampoo my hair which went fine. Then she starts cutting my hair which is where it all goes wrong. She starts cutting from the back, and when she's done she asks how I like it. I asked her to cut it shorter and I told her that looking from the front, the right side looked longer than the left side. So she goes back and cuts it shorter, the length was fine this time but again I could see from the front looking in the mirror that the right side was a solid 1.5 inch longer than the left. She tells me that it is actually even because she measured it when she was cutting from the back. Mind you she did not one single time look at my hair from the front to measure the length of the 2 front pieces to make sure they were the same length. She tried to fix it again and I told her once again that I could see that the right was still about 1inch longer than the left, but she just kept insisting that it was even. I was frustrated so I just went with it and paid and left. I got home in tears and my husband asked what was wrong, then he immediately noticed how uneven my haircut was and was shocked that I paid $60 for that mess. Now I could see being uneven by centimetres would be fine, but for the right side to be a literal whole inch longer that the left??? This was the most simple haircut and Jessica did not deliver. I really like the vibe of their salon and the decor of it as well. I want to buy artwork in there every time I go. I am sad they no longer carry the brand of dry shampoo spray I like so much, but they have a new product line that I haven't tried yet. I called at the last minute and I was able to get in with James and he really did a wonderful job of listening to me and of executing my cut and style. Shine Salon is my go to hair salon in Plaza. The establishment is beautiful and I love that they offer you wine before your appointment. They have a variety of hairdressers from $45 and up. The reason for the 4 stars is I've had some pretty average hairdressers who charge almost $90 for a simple hair cut while the best hair dressers I've had had (shout out to Sarah) cost half that amount. I'll continue going here as long as they have quality, reasonable hairdressers. I would encourage people to call ahead and see which hairdressers are within your price range (as it doesn't say in their site); otherwise, you be forking over a car loan payment. read more

That perfect haircut and stylist is like that perfect pair of jeans or big foot or the loch ness monster. Super elusive or may not even exist. Shine proved me wrong. Not only is the salon fabulous, chic and clean but they were gracious, kind and made my experience wonderful. Often, I find myself apologizing for my curly monster hair at salons but Shine and my stylist James worked with me to make my time there worthwhile. He even moved back an appointment in order to finish up my cut and style (so sorry!) but I appreciated not being handed off. He spent nearly two hours with me recommended products, but not in that pushy car salesman way and discussed how we can both work together for my hair success- sigh. #girlproblems. The best part of my visit to Shine (other than the followup phone call from James later that day to see how my hair dried and if I was happy with my look)- was the price. Look, mom, I can wear my hair down now! I am totally a ponytail, bun, top knot kinda girl. It's a rarity that I take the 10-15 minutes and actually blow dry my hair. That's why I was completely stoked for Shine Salon's Blow Dry 101. For $25, they pair you up with a wonderful, sweet and educated stylist to educate you on how to properly tame your tresses. Lisa showed me the ins and outs of a proper blow dry and I also enjoyed a great conversation with Jeffre Scott who was on hand to show us ladies the best glow products for summer skin! After a few hours, a few glasses of wine and a lot of fun I left Shine Salon armed with a mini J-Lo glow, swingy, shiny hair and the knowledge to actually attempt the blow out myself! *flips hair* Go to Shine and get your know-how on. read more

Hair. I have had meltdowns in salons with a horrible dye job or cut. Hair matters. I hate sounding like a superficial person- but really- I love my hair. I don't just trust any person with scissors. I have gone to the typical Charlotte salons- Modern and Carmen, Carmen. I have been to a few others. I always left either with a full blown panic attack or absolutely bored with my haircut. And then I went to Shine. Mark is my stylist and he understands my hair. He has not tried to cut it short (seriously- every stylist seems to want to chop it all off), he works with my curls and he understands that I also love my hair straightened. It is comfortable. Not pretentious. A lot of fun (which getting my haircut is normally a painful experience- not a fun one) The only negative? Shine is known. It is used to be a little secret. I've recently moved to the Charlotte area and began looking for a new salon. I tried Shine first because of the wonderful reviews. I gave them a call and the person I spoke to on the phone was extremely personable and helpful, she asked about the move, what my schedule normally was during the week, and the type of service I was looking for. I decided to book a wash, cut, and style for my first appointment to try things out. She booked me with Charlton about 2 and a half weeks out. I was a little disappointed with how far the appointment had to be scheduled, but I took it as a good sign that they were constantly booked...clearly it means they are busy! I arrived and waited for about 1 minute before I was seen for the appointment. Everyone at the salon was so friendly. The atmosphere was relaxing and you can tell the clientele quickly become regulars. He asked if I wanted to add a deep conditioning treatment that would last for 6 weeks. I had a feeling this would dramatically up the cost of my appointment but decided to opt for it since my hair needed it badly. Charlton is definitely a professional and very talented stylist. He took note of how my hair was cut previously, the type and texture, part, way I wanted it cut, way I wear it normally, etc. By the time he was finished my hair looked healthy and sassy. Even as it's grown since the appointment it maintained the style. When I went to pay I was shocked...full cut, style, and deep conditioning add on only brought the total to $60 (which may seem like a lot but considering the service, products used, time spent, and competitor's pricing...it was a deal). I scheduled my next appointment, which again was several weeks out to try some glossing. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of how long it takes to get an appointment...but I would much rather wait and have Shine style my hair than anyone else. Marilyn is the best colorist! I would recommend her for brown or blonde hair. I personally have brown hair. She can do highlights on brown hair and they actually grown in great and look natural. I have gone to so many colorist but none of them listen and actually do what I want with my color. She is caring, skilled and good. I am happy to have found her!! read more
