I was visiting Charlotte from San Diego with a little time to kill before meeting a friend, and decided to try and squeeze in a quick haircut. After striking out at a couple of places, I stumbled upon Lucid Hair Studio in Ballentyne. Walking in, I admit I had a moment of "this looks too fancy for a quick men's cut," and worried about the price. The cut was definitely on the pricier side compared to my usual spots, but the owner herself, Oxana Mak Folls, was available to take me as a walk-in. Then something unexpected happened - I got the best damn haircut of my life. Oxana is a true artist. She explained her process every step of the way, including why she uses only shears instead of clippers. Apparently clippers just follow the shape of your skull, and since most people don't have perfectly smooth, symmetrical heads, you end up with a haircut that varies with your head shape rather than looking even. A skilled stylist with shears can actually compensate for head shape and create a more natural, even look. Plus, clippers create jagged edges that make your hair look rougher and grow out harsher - though I'm still wrapping my head around all the technical details. Either way, it worked. We had the most engaging conversation too - the time flew by! And the scalp massage? Lived up to every bit of hype. The products she used smelled incredible, and the face massage was a fantastic touch. I'm usually not one to buy products at a salon, but the spray wax she used was so good I had to take some home (cost more than I usually spend on hair products, but whatever). Lucid Hair Studio, and Oxana specifically, is now officially my go-to spot whenever I'm on the East Coast. My new dilemma? Finding someone local in San Diego who can match her skills - good luck to me on that quest. I'm writing this three weeks after my haircut, and here's the thing: it still looks fantastic. Oxana told me it would last 5-6 weeks versus my normal 3-4 weeks, and she wasn't kidding. It actually looks better each week as it grows out. When you do the math, that's about 36% more value per cut - suddenly that higher price tag makes a lot more sense. I had gone a few times to Lucid until one morning appointment when I had Covid symptoms. Not wanting to get the staff or other customers sick I called and cancelled. The stylist demanded I share a copy of my negative Covid medical report. I refused explaining that I don't share private medical information with non-medical professionals, including a hair stylist. I was told I'd be charged full price if I don't produce the medical report. I explained that it was illegal for a company to charge money for services not rendered while demanding private medical information to prevent doing so. As the company is essentially placing clients in a predicament of either sharing private medical information protected by law or be charged for services not rendered, I've filed complaints with the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Arts Licensure, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Attorney General, and the Better Business Bureau, as well as a Safety and Health Complaint with NCDOL. Hopefully one of these complaints/investigations stops this abuse. read more

My balayage had turned slightly yellow-golden after about six months and had grown out quite a bit. I asked Lucid Hair for a nice, natural transition. What I got were peroxide blonde highlights that did not blend with my natural hair at all. It looked awful. After a toner, it was okay, but it only lasted for three washes, so I asked for a correction. I explicitly communicated that I did not want any permanent color or anything that would permanently alter my natural hair color. Instead, I got dark brown hair dye, which turned my natural hair red/orange after a few washes. I have never experienced such poor service before! Correcting this now costs me an additional $600. Lucid Hair completely ruined my hair and charged $300 for it. read more

Booked a $330 service and got charged a total of $927. After recovering $279.25, I am still left with ridiculous charge and fried hair. This business requires credit card information at the time of booking. Beware, you might be charged whatever the business feels like at the end of your appointment, there was no communication of extra charges at any time. Being a hairstylist myself , I'm very critical . Let me just say , I was blown away by the technique, quality of hair and the amazing personality of Natalia . I went back in August and they were phenomenal!! An appt with Oxana is a must if you have curly hair! I had to bring my baby with me who was 6 months old, he's normally good to go whenever we go places but was fussy during pretty much the entire appt. Everyone there took turns taking the stroller up and down the salon which was so sweet especially for a new mom who hasn't had a haircut in over a year. What made it even better is that Oxana is trained in curly hair, I had a lot of damage and she cut & styled my hair really well. After three separate attempts from three different hairdressers at this salon, my hair was still nowhere near what I asked for. When I reached out for a refund, Oxana the owner attempted to "explain away" why it wasn't their fault that they were unable to do my hair well. I even offered to skip leaving a review if fully refunded. She declined a refund and offered only my tip back... It's difficult to find a salon that'll take the time to do mens hair. Most barber shops are rough and clipper heavy; I've learned to avoid them. Helen is outstanding and takes her time. She's proficient using scissors which I believe is a lost art with men's haircuts. The scalp treatment after the haircut is bliss. This is the first negative coloring and hair cut experience I've ever had at a salon. Yes even as a hair model. I'm aware the hair dressers working on your hair are inexperienced and need to build portfolio but it's okay to say -- "I can't do this so it won't even be a good idea to try because it won't turn out to even close to what you want it." It's okay to tell a client that, we'll respect you for it. It's the first time I walked out of a salon feeling unhappy. No one's ever messed up this badly on my hair and the hair dresser working on my hair had direct guidance from a more "experienced" stylist the whole time. Instead of giving me what I asked for, they tried to wing it and make it sound like the look they ended up doing was better for me. Asked for face framing layers - did not get that. Asked for one inch to be cut -- they cut off more. Asked for a certain color for balayage -- got something I did not like and I tried to be honest about it. I understand this is part of the hair modeling experience. Things can go south but what I would've appreciated even after this blunder is accountability. Instead of gassing up a client with pretentious flattery when they feel unhappy with how they look and will look for weeks and months -- please apologize for it not turning out to be what they hoped and offering to remedy the situation. People there are nice and try to be comforting but I just wish they held each other accountable for their mistakes. I know it wouldn't look good to do that in front of a client but we would appreciate the honesty and professionalism. My hair looks like a joke now and I'm out $200. Not worth it. read more

* Be Aware, and think twice before you go to "Lucid Hair Studio" to get your hair done. The prices change when they're done with your hair, not the same price before they do your hair. Services are over priced, the owner does not wear a mask, as she said she's the boss no need for a mask during the pandemic. I was desperately looking for a hair salon yesterday, Saturday April 3rd. Got on Google and found Lucid hair studio. I call and made an appointment for 3pm. Inna was the stylist available there, I told her I wanted a cut and to go blonde from the red color I had. I was told she would 1st have to remove the color, and I would have to go back to do a balayage we discuss the price and she told me it would be $150 dollars to remove the color and cut. I agreed with the service after discussing the price because I knew I could afford it. Later, Inna was working on my hair and she made a call she speaks Russian so no clue as to what she said over the phone, but it lead me to believe that she called Oxana the owner. I believed Inna might of had some concerns on how the removal of the color was coming along because when the owner walk-in and she immediately started looking through my hair. They started to speak in Russian so again no clue as to what was said. Inna did do a great job cutting my hair and I am pleased with the cut. However, I didn't get the color I wanted. I knew I would have to go back and that was ok as well. The awful experience comes when Inna was done with my hair, and Oxana gave me a different price than what Inna had given me and told me that the total was close to $300 dollars with a tip of 15% my total was $330 dollar to basically remove my old color and cut my hair. How did it go from $150 to $330 these ladies ripped me off, and over charge me by changing the price from $150 to $330. I choked and froze in disbelief. WOW how deceitful, and quick to change the price. I was not given a receipt, I'm still asking for a receipt and a break down as of why the price change was so much more than what o was initially told to remove a color and cut. Smh Never Again! ( Don't go there ) always ask for the price and if the price is going to change once your hair is done. Do not trust the price the give you. Shop around for prices and read reviews, if you have a bad experience let it be known and warn others. You'll save someone a bad experience! read more
