I took a meeting here and the person I was meeting with gave me a few local options. This was the place I hadn't been yet so I thought I'd go a bit out of my comfort zone and try a new spot. Something I was nervous about from the photos on Yelp was if there would be enough inside seating when I arrived for a meeting. When I pulled up, I was still a bit anxious about this as the front lot was full and I had to pull to the back to park. Once I got out of my car and walked through the cafe to the front to order my anxieties about seating had diminished. It's much larger inside than the outside appears and the photos here on Yelp don't really do the indoors justice. Yes, the outdoor seating is really cute and well shaded so I get why folks focus on it, but if you're like me and wanting to get some work done you'll find a comfortable spot here. Now onto the coffee. As I made my way into the shop I noticed one of my art school professors (we both sort of looked at each other like "do I know you?") and I moved on, but that's a good sign. The art teachers usually know where to snag a decent cup of coffee. When I ordered I tried one of their special drinks and chatted with the baristas about it before I made my choice. Extra points here because not only was the drink really, really good, but the girls working were beyond friendly and answered all of my questions. I'm not lying when I say this was one of the best cups of coffee I've had in Lawrence in some time. I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Can't speak for the fly fishing part, and quite frankly, you'd need to get on an airplane and make probably more than one flight to get to a suitable location to engage in that as far as I'm aware. But this I can confirm: they make an exceptional cup of coffee here, particularly their house brew which uses Messenger Coffee out of Kansas City. Perfectly stout, no bitterness, exceptional finish, one of the best I've had in the city in awhile. But what really sets them apart is the friendly service from the owners, the kind that can't be faked. A few nice tables in the middle of the shop for hanging out and free wireless internet service is available. With Alchemy shuttering their doors across the street, Great Blue Heron fits the bill very nicely in this area of Mass Street. Very highly recommended.

The interior is pretty small but they do have some seating outside-front and back. The service was good. I ordered the House Gimlet: cucumber infused gin, rosemary, orange blossom, and lime. This drink was so refreshing. It's a great drink for spring and summer. I highly recommend this drink! My boyfriend tried the Fugue State: Old overholt rye, bigallet China-china, tiki bitters, Lambrusco, and orange peel. He liked it and said it was like an old fashioned. It wasn't too strong and was really sweet. They had lots of other good sounding cocktails. I'll definitely stop by in the future.
