I would like to start this review off by saying I love this business,today is the first day that I kind of had a weird experience but genuinely love love love! I grew up in Lawrence I went to broken Arrow I went to LHS I remember when this was a laundromat. So it's crazy to me that it's a super awesome coffee shop Currently I don't live here and I always make sure that I come here when I'm visiting my little brother. I just instantly felt judged I had walked in with out a mask and that's my fault, I completely forgot that it's a super big deal here I should've been on that. But then I went to go pay and it's almost like she didn't want me to because instantly she said oh I can't take your cash do you have a card. I get that as well it's just with the tone and then like her demeanor it was just strange. Off putting. Regardless my food was like eight bucks I gave a three dollar tip on the card then went out to the car to get my small change and came back and put that in the tip jar. It just baffles me that you would be rude to me when I'm literally a paying customer and it wasn't even rude I don't want to paint a bad picture it was just off-putting. What's not to love about 1900 Barker? My first visit was not too long after they first opened, when my mom and I "needed" a finely crafted coffee beverage and pastry, and decided we should branch out from our usual bakery stop. Now it's become our usual stop! I usually get my typical cold brew and am always happy with it. Their other beverages are superb as well. My mom is a certifiable coffee snob and fully approves as well. Her initial basis for selecting her favorite coffee places and baristas is how well they make a cappuccino. She's tried cappuccinos from coast to coast and more exotic points beyond, and has determined 1900 Barker ranks in her top three. The baked goods are the perfect companion to the coffee, or just on their own. There are always samples of their artisan breads and I have yet to taste one I didn't like. I'm not a big bread person *unless* it's crusty on the outside and chewy in the middle, preferably with a hint of sourdough, or unless it's a croissant. You can take your pick here, because they have both! Daily quiches, pastries, sandwiches and other baked specialties such as pizza grace their menu, as well as a standard selection of filled croissants (ham and cheese filled, for example) and sweet rolls (the cinnamon roll made with flaky croissant pastry is my favorite). They'll warm them up for you, or you can devour them immediately in the cute little industrial-modern-meets-historic-Craftsman-style space or out on the patio. We're usually on our way to another Lawrence-based adventure, so we typically get our treats to go. The parking lot is small, so if it's busy when you arrive, you can just park on the street. Just watch for the no parking signs so you don't get a ticket (or sideswiped). Better yet, just walk or bike if you live in the downtown, south Mass St. or old East Lawrence areas. 1900 Barker is a bakery where you can pretty good pastries and coffee for a lot of money. For those who don't know, 1900 Barker is located in a non-conforming use neighborhood space in Lawrence. What this means is that this is located in a building that is right in the middle of a residential area and is not part of a commercial district, though there are more commercial businesses a couple of blocks away. This adds a little twee charm to the place as it is as though it's a charming little bakery that's a part of the neighborhood; in actuality, the former tenant was a laundromat, and the bakery was able to keep the non-conforming use. Inside the bakery, it's a flurry of activity. Despite being in a building that is only a couple of hundred square feet, its a busy place. We were there in the morning, and I didn't see any bakery production work going on, but there were still a half-dozen employees working behind the counter. The menu is somewhat limited, but it's still an operating bakery, and they will sell you a loaf of bread. Sure, a loaf might be a sawbuck, but it was artisinally crafted with love. On our visit, we settled on ham & cheese croissants, breakfast buns, and coffee. While I am slyly complaining about the hipsterness of 1900 Barker and its priciness, the pastries we got were ridiculously flaky. Both the croissants littered the counter with flakes of onion-skin thin bits of flaky pastry that broke off at the slightest touch. The breakfast bun was a whorl of flaky pastry with a some caramelized / burned sugar that was made of 1000 layers. Pretty good stuff, but not anything you could get a dozen box for the office without getting a second mortgage. The coffee was rather good as well. I didn't see it made, but I am guessing by the volume and presentation that it was probably some sort of precision pour-over. Full of flavor, even if constituted 11 o.z. all told with what was in the cup and what was in the small steel krug alongside. 1900 Barker is rather good, though I do balk a little bit at laying down $30 for two people to have a light breakfast and coffee. They may be the flakiest pastries I've had West of Paris, but if I were to hold off on going a dozen times, I could just fly to Paris and have pastries there. read more

1900 was definitely a quaint and modern coffee shop. I visited for the first time over the weekend, about an hour before they were closing. I had never been before so I wasn't totally sure what to order. I decided on a latte with their house vanilla caramel syrup. Unfortunately for me, they were out of almond milk, so I had to opt for soy. I also decided to try one of their pastries, a twice baked almond croissant. This was definitely the highlight of my visit! Such a delicious pastry!! So flaky and buttery, with an amazing filling that had some chocolate notes. The space is fairly small, but with and open and airy feel. I sat at one of their bar stools to get a bit of work done. I ended up not connecting to wifi, but it seems they do have it available. My biggest set back is the price - it was a little over priced for what my budget would allow to visit regularly. My order was pushing $12. I know that it costs extra for me to substitute milk, but my croissant was over $5. However, the quality it pretty great. I will likely be back in the future, just not regularly. read more

Only bread, pastries, maybe some quiche, and coffees/teas available here, no real food, so think "European" style cafe, not the American variety where you can find a sandwich, soup, or more on the menu. And I thought the other popular bakeries in town were expensive - if you live in Lawrence, you know which two I am thinking about - until I stopped by 1900 Barker this morning. Seating is extremely limited as well, so if you hope to sit down...take a number and wait your turn. I had heard they were "a bit pricey", but that is an understatement! I paid $9 ($8.50+tax) for a loaf of (burnt) apple, raisin, walnut wheat bread, the most I have spent in my life in any of the 41 countries I have visited, including Switzerland where everything is overpriced, for a loaf of bread. Seems rather excessive to me. The bread was "OK", other than the obvious taste of burntness on the crust, with the inside being soft and moist, almost too moist as if it needed a couple more minutes in the oven. When paying $9 for a loaf of bread, it had better be perfect and delicious, but this bread was neither. How do you burn the outside and still leave the inside undercooked. The loaf did not hold up well to a knife either, caving and crumbling as I sliced. Makes me think the "baker" is either experimenting or inexperienced. I saw several other reviews complaining about the bread being not cooked enough and too expensive among other things, yet 1900 Barker is consistently awarded 4 or 5 Stars. I believe "5 Stars" are given out willy-nilly by far too many reviewers, but my ratings are based on "value", hence the name of my blog: "TravelValue", what you get in terms of quality, service and price. So based on their absurd prices alone, I cannot give them more than 4 Bombs (2 Stars), especially when I take into account that the bread was burnt, even more so on the bottom than the top, too moist inside and falls apart when sliced. I hope they succeed, I really do. I hate for any business to fail (with a couple of exceptions in Lawrence, but that's another review or two), particularly when they have large sums invested in a venture (the place used to be a run down laundromat). However, after the trendiness and novelty wear off, I believe people will require more value and better quality for their dollar. So, unless they bring their prices back down to Earth and stop burning the bread, I unfortunately do not see this venture being a long-term success. The lack of parking alone will turn many customers away because the parking lot only holds five or six cars max and Barker and 19th are far too narrow to allow too many cars on the street. It does not have much seating and little parking. However, the coffee and pastries are the best I have eaten and worth every calorie! Everyone in Lawrence must try this place. I am only giving it 4 stars because I purchased the raisin bread and it was not that great. It tasted bland. I kept eating it because I paid for it. It started to grow on me but I had to add lots of butter. It probably is very healthy because it tasted like it did not have much sugar. I believe it is made with whole wheat flour too. Ok, so when Michelangelo Buonarroti drops into your neighborhood and starts offering hand painted postcards and hand sculpted yard ornaments, you need to get there early and often so he keeps churning out the arts. It wasn't an inviting environment: The person "on the other side" was busy chatting away and didn't want to be bothered....the person was so annoyed I didn't know what I wanted to order....was so annoyed I asked about the bread of the day....etc., etc., etc. All I wanted was information and maybe a loaf of bread. I was looking for a nice sweet treat and a cup of tea, but had no clue where to actually find it. I saw this little house on the corner of a roundabout, and was surprised that it was a bakery. So I stopped in. First the decor was modern, yet quaint. It was packed with young college kids on laptops taking advantage of the wifi i guess. The guy at the counter was very friendly and explained the menu to me. The menu is very limited and they only do pastries. No cupcakes, no cookies, no donuts. That was a little disappointing, but as I looked behind the counter at rows of fresh pastries, I got over that. I ordered a cinnamon morning bun, (thinking it would be a bun or a roll) and I wanted a sweet tea, to my shock they didn't have. They had white, green,black tea and a shaken iced matcha. I had no clue what that was, but since I'm not a fan of black tea, I chose the matcha. Before I go a step further, I have to say the prices are a bit ridiculous. To charge $4.00 for a pastry and another $4.00 for a "small" tea drink, it better make love to my palate and call me in the morning. That being said, my cinnamon morning bun was a thin pastry, and even though it tasted good, it was slightly burnt on top. The matcha threw me off with it's odd color (bottom of the sea green), but it needed sugar badly. Will I be back, not quite sure. This place is the real deal. I'm from Denver and have a daughter that goes to KU and we LOVE this place. We were in town with family from Utah today and hit up 1900 Barker again and everyone went bananas for it. The pastries are amazing, the focaccia pizza is so unique (the good sort of "can't get it anywhere else/quality" NOT "interesting" unique) and the bread is just SO good. I love that you can buy a half loaf of bread and they'll slice it and toast it for you. I don't know how you could give this place less than 5 stars. The prices are outstanding, the food is perfection and the staff is friendly and patient (I can never decide on what I want to get, it all looks so good!). What is not to love. A true Lawrence gem. read more

Wonderful bakery. Amazing croissants, on par or better than many I've had abroad. The ham & cheese was so smoky and wonderful. The twice baked croissants were perfection. Anyone that complains about "burnt" doesn't understand this style of baked goods. The bread is tender and moist inside with an incredible crunch on the outside. High quality coffee. The ham and cheese croissant with an everything croissant (like an everything bagel but as a croissant) was savory and delicious. The cinnamon pastry was very tasty too. Excellent matcha latte with homemade nut milk. I enjoyed being able to sample the breads before purchasing - all of them were perfectly baked and moist. The lemon filled croissant was perfectly buttery and flaky and well worth the price. I was slightly disappointed with the scant (less than 1 tbsp) amount of lemon pastry cream filling, but still enjoyed the flavor. The double chocolate cookie is also phenomenal, an indulgent dark chocolate balanced with flaky salt that will please chocolate aficionados. We ordered a large assortment of croissants, danishes, quiche and bread loaves for our son's birthday and it was fabulous. Everything looked gorgeous and tasted amazing! Our son said the croissants were just as good as the ones he remembers from Pierre Herme in Paris. We had no problems with the online ordering and when we got there, the staff was very quick to bring out our boxes and bags of goodies. Both of the young men were wearing masks and set the items on the roof of our car, just like we had requested. They were also very friendly and cheerful. A word about burnt bread from Marc Vetri, Food & Wine's 1999 best new chef award winner. Vetri trained at Bella Blu in New York under Alain Sailhac, Dean of the French Culinary Institute in New York. Here is how he describes how Sailhac instructed his employees to bake bread "Alain would come in when the bread was in the oven and tell everyone, 'Darker, darker! It has to be burnt!' He loved it like that. The darker the color, the thicker the crust, and the play of flavors was incredible....To this day, when I walk in to the kitchen before service, I yell to everyone, 'It's still not dark enough!
