Out of nowhere a bartender inserted himself into our private conversation. I asked him to stay out of it, and instead of backing off he got rude. By the time we settled up he had completely lost it and screamed 'f***ing a**hole' at me in front of the whole bar. There's no excuse for a staff member blowing up at paying customers over a conversation he was never part of. If you're behind the bar and nobody's being harmed, pour the drinks and let people be. However add Karaoke and young girls ( of age of coarse ) to the mix and it's the prefect storm for when FRANK was a young man.... The go to meal always for any evening I start with Egg Roll's , BBQ pork then moving onto Almond Fried Chicken. A deep fried boneless chicken topped with gravy and grounded almonds, YUM. Well, any meal isn't complete without pork fried rice to dump that Almond Fried Chicken gravy onto... I mean without the gravy mix this meal is incomplete... That gravy & rice helps later when I've sucked down enough cocktails to blow a 3.0 reading on a breathalyzer machine. Not that it makes the buzz better I had going any better but that layer of grease coats my stomach from that battery acid vodka they serve me. Karaoke is the entertainment aside from the room spinning. Great fun watching young girls and friends who are tone deaf taking turns at ruining a great songs... Yet it's always gives you a reason to start a conversation with a young lady by throwing her a compliment on her way singing of your favorite songs ( WINK WINK ) .. If you're lucky she gives you enough time to buy her a cocktail or two and expand that conversation into a cab ride to someone's house. Well, you get the point so lets just say KARAOKE a good thing! Well, meal is done and I smash my fortune open and I thank the gods. The Rickshaw is a timeless piece of Ballard Old School history and should be preserved for other generations. We have had to cancel food orders more than once because sitting there waiting for an hour to order (literally), then waiting another hour and multiple reminders for the bill before you can close out is just untenable. We live right up the street and since the food is so good, we try over and over and over again and it always the same experience: endlessly disappointing. Sitting there for 15 minutes with empty glasses and not a bartender in sight, or waiting 20 minutes in an empty restaurant only to finally order and have the server tell you they just sold out of what you wanted is not the way to run a restaurant. I'm only giving it two stars because the food is so good, but I'm afraid we've been disappointed one too many times. Until they can either hire staff or train their current staff on how to deal with their sections, we're out.

Some of the older patrons talk about how great it used to be before there were houses built in front blocking the waterfront view. Although it's divey I assume most of the patrons are locals who could choose to go anywhere but come here because it's close. If you happen to be visiting in the non sunny summer months there is still lots of space and seating inside. This turned out to be the perfect place for a friend to hold a birthday party. Not too loud, not too crowded, lots of space for everyone to stand around and talk. The majority of the parking is street parking but because there is nothing else around this was super easy as well. Best of all prices are great. I can't recall such a cheap night out in recent years. Bartender handled the crowd with ease, and the KJ kept the party mood going as a LOT of people were there to sing. One issue that evening caused by the fryer being out of service, so there was no bar food available. All in all - Engels Pub delivered a good karaoke party experience, and I think we'll be going back soon.
