I had driven past Royal Unicorn countless times in Shoreline's Richmond Beach neighborhood. Finally, The Homie and I decided to detour and check it out for an early dinner (6/29/26). The entrance to the left was to the Sing Along Room, where happy hour was in full swing. We could hear all the joyous laughter drifting from next door as we paused in the main entry way. We were welcomed by a pleasant wait person and shown to a comfy booth. It has a dated exterior, but after being seated in the main dining room, I found it to be clean and well kept. I liked the framed prints, huge murals, aquarium, and well maintained booths and seating. I learned that it is coming up on three years under current ownership. The dinner menu had a nice variety of appetizers, entrees, dinner combos, and group dinner selections. We opted for hot tea, the appetizer platter, almond chicken, curry beef, and steamed rice. The appetizer platter had charsiu with hot mustard, ketchup, and sesame seeds for dipping. There were also vegetable egg rolls with another dipping sauce, fried chicken wing flats, cream cheese crab wontons, and butterflied fried shrimp. Perfect for sharing and palate pleasing. The Homie's baseline at Cantonese and/or Chinese American spots is how a restaurant executes almond chicken. Royal Unicorn did a good job where it was generous, flavorful, not overly breaded or oily, and was moist. I opted for curry beef and was happy to see that their version had a nice mix of perfectly cooked vegetables with tender beef. Again, generous and flavorful. Both entrees were savored with perfectly fresh steamed rice. We were also checked on, water glasses refilled, and provided a teapot refill, which were greatly appreciated. We look forward to return and check out other entrees on their menu. Definitely added this to the dining out rotation in Shoreline. read more

First time Back since the new owner took over. Nice and bright in the space and interesting table decor. The fish tank is still there and the fish look happy and healthy. The waiter was great and the food was pretty good. I found the ordering process to be complicated and somewhat overwhelming but that is common for me at Asian restaurants. read more

How I heard of this place: Some friends of ours have a weekly routine that includes Royal Unicorn. While their plans don't change, their company can, so we were invited to join them on this particular Sunday for dinner. Type of cuisine: Family style Chinese food served for an American audience. Ambiance: Quaint and cozy, the restaurant side (we didn't make it to the sing-along lounge) host booth seating as well as a large dim sum table complete with lazy Susan at the center of their dining room. An aquarium glows blue with fish swimming gently as patrons enter, eat and leave. Unexpected decorations grace the walls and lighting fixtures, and a large mural maintains the blue water theme. What I ordered: For our appetizers, we selected the Fried Chicken and Egg Rolls. Our dinner orders included a veggie Egg Foo Young, Singapore Rice Noodles and Sesame Beef. What I loved: The vegetables in the beef dish were perfectly seasoned and prepared. The Singapore Noodles lacked the spice I'm accustomed to, but the flavors were nice and the dish robust. Stopped by for Friday Karaoke Night, and this place is AMAZING!! The service here is great! I was greeted & seated quite quickly. The food came out timely as well! This place is pretty busy/lively during their Friday Karaoke, but service is still really good when busy! I got a bunch of menu items but only got a picture of a few. The Mongolian Beef, Honey Walnut Prawns and Pork Hofun were SO GOOD!! Honorable mention to Szechuan Fish and Mapo Tofu cause that was also so delicious! Worth the drive and prices! Haven't been to Royal Unicorn in a while and I must say the food is still delicious. They updated their menu design and it looks great. I got the Hot and Spicy Spareribs, a side of hot and sour soup, and sweet and sour pork. I was completely blown away AGAIN. This is still my number one spot to get Chinese food and is the only spot that treats me right every time I come in! This restaurant was quite good. I had been meaning to visit for a few years and finally got around to it today. And that was because my intended restaurant is closed on Mondays. I got lettuce wrap with chicken. Fresh lettuce and fresh chicken filling. Needed a bit more flavor to the filling, but the hosian sauce was ok. I'm not big on sweets though, so I didn't use much sauce. I loved the light crunch on each bite. Really good. I also had the spicy chicken wings. It is my favorite Chinese dish to order when in the mood for chicken wings. This restaurant served up the best I have ever had. All but one of the wings were decent sized. Every one of them were tasty. The woman who served me was kind, prompt, and curious. When I asked her what she would recommend, she told me to "Review the menu because everything is good." I really would have appreciated some direction from her. But I chose well on my own. When I'm in town again, and if I am in the mood, for Chinese food, I'll be back. read more

I was looking for a solid Chinese restaurant to add to my comfort food rotation. Simple, clean, maybe even basic. We got Dinner Set 2 (for 2) which included egg rolls, potstickers, hot sour soup (we swapped for egg drop), almond chicken, Mongolian beef, and veggie fried rice. Lately we've been trying a few Chinese restaurants where something is always a bit off with these dishes, but here, everything tasted how I think they are supposed to taste like lol (minus the egg drop, but adding salt helped) The service is what took the score from 4 stars to 5. Our server and busser were friendly, polite, kind, and answered any questions well. They were very hospitable and was very prompt when we needed anything. As for inside, while the interior is reminiscent of an older time, I think it's done tastefully for this hole in the wall. The Royal Unicorn has reopened this week under new Management. We live in the neighborhood and ate at the former once and did not enjoy it. Today, we had the Crispy Rice soup, Coconut Shrimp, and the Two Delights (similar to Mongolian beef, but with chicken). All three were 5 stars. The coconut shrimp is freshly made, the two Delights had a great meat to veggie ratio and the soup was perfect. Unlike the predecessor, we shall be back and we are fans. While yes you can still get pre-set meals at dinner, but don't forget their Lunch menu served up 7 days a week! We never visited this restaurant before the new owners revamped it and we were skeptical. We took the kids yesterday and had a very enjoyable meal. Service was excellent and the restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. The food was delicious- we had Kung Pao chicken, broccoli beef, and chicken chow mein. All were fresh, flavorful and most importantly- not greasy! I just ate my leftovers and enjoyed it all over agin. We will be regulars. Shoreline does not offer many options for Chinese food around Richmond Beach. Hungry around lunch time and stopped in here. At one pm, the restaurant part was empty. The bar appeared to be serving customers., but chose to sit in main dining area.A helpful woman took my lunch order. First, ordered egg flower soup. Weak version as it arrived. Seemed to be an overly cornstarched broth, with little flavor. Next, the Canton dinner for two.Served with BBQ pork, egg roll, wonton soup, almond fried chicken, sweet and sour pork, chicken chow mein and pork fried rice. BBQ pork very dry and lacking seasoning. Egg roll over fried and hard. Wonton soup was unforgettable, but enjoyed the few won tons in soup. Almond fried chicken, again overcooked with bland sauce. Sweet and sour pork had a good sauce, but pork was overcooked into barely edible pieces.,Chicken chow mein was mostly onions and celery, very little chicken available. Pork fried rice was overcooked, with a few gristly pieces of pork in this dish. A big disappointment for this meal. Really, my standards for Chinese in Richmond Beach are so low. Please, just make the food palatable. For your location, I will be very forgiving. Yet, you still disappoint me with your subpar food. Possibly if I showed up during Karaoke and assaulted customers with my drunk singing voice, I would fit in more. Be thankful I have no delusions about my singing abilities. Tried Royal Unicorn after they reopened under new ownership this summer, and the food was great! Easily one of the best Chinese food options in the area. The menu is relatively small but it covers most popular items and the flavors and portions are excellent, not too heavy or greasy. BBQ pork appetizer- good portions, juicy and flavorful (not dry) Mongolian Two delights (chicken and beef)- lots of meat, sauce slightly spicy and sweet, with lots of onions and scallions mixed in. Kung pao chicken- finally a Kung pao that is actually spicy! Nice heat without overpowering the flavor. Lots of peanuts, veggies, and chicken. Chicken and broccoli- lots of crisp broccoli and other veg, chicken was tender. The sauce was maybe the least flavorful of the dishes we got, but overall still tasty. Mushu Vegetables- good serving, plenty of egg. Sauce was a little too sweet (mixed in as opposed to served on the side, which might have been the problem). Wrappers were warm and fresh. Overall really pleased with the quality, flavors and portions. We'll be back to try more dishes! read more

Unfortunately, this account is still linked with previous owner, whom I liked but who struggled in recent years. The new owners have definitely improved. I was blown away with the freshness and lightness of the food and gracious staff. I think if this can be linked to the New Royal Unicorn, it will be a sold 4 or 5 star rating. I am sensitive to MSG but had no problem. Tried the lunch special of Sichuan beef. It was $13 and more than enough food for my senior appetite. The food really stands out. It is much above average. Always on the lookout for Chinese food in our area we again tried the Royal Unicorn. Under former ownership the food was not that good. One of those restaurants where the bar was full but no one was eating any food. It's tucked back behind a gas station on 185th and Richmond Beach road. Not ideal. Ate there twice and did not go back. Comes now a new owner. Nice friendly folks looking to do a good job. We have now been four times and the food is good. Understand this is not Tai Tung on Jackson Street but a nice local place to go to eat in or take out. I really like the Almond chicken, comes with the number 2 dinner. My wife gets the Mongolian Beef, also with the number 2 dinner. Plenty to eat, nice clean surroundings. Yess the bar is still full but I see food going over there so it has improved. They recently reopened under new management. The food and drinks are amazing. I got the spicy wontons and chicken wings and they were super fresh and crispy. The spiked yakult lemonade and elderflower fizz are really yummy and at a good price. My friend got the lychee lemon drop and passionfruit mai tai and those were both also really good.
