Fantastic, hearty bread that's worth a drive. During my pregnancy, I've experienced some pretty awful food aversions. Foods that used to give me life - meat and sweets - I can no longer tolerate. I thought this pregnancy would be about eating everything I wanted (within reason)! The one food I have been able to consume pretty regularly, which I used to avoid because of, you know, trying not to look pregnant if I'm not pregnant, is carbs (e.g. all the bread). 20 Shekels Bread is 25 minutes from me. I know, because it is far enough that I have to use a GPS to get there (although I bet by the end of this pregnancy I'll be able to get there sans GPS). Yet, it is still the closest bakery that makes my beloved bread, as opposed to cakes/sweets. I think I live in the middle of a bread desert. I used Yelp to find 20 Shekels. I would have never gone into a bakery 25 minutes away next to a Laundromat if it wasn't for Yelp. The reviews are correct, this place is good. When you walk in you forget the somewhat shady location. It is small, quaint, and smells of freshly baking bread (i.e. smell that doesn't make me want to throw up). They had bread that wasn't on their website menu and smaller pastries in the case. I got a Chocolate, Blackberry Bread. I still haven't gotten over the fact that I dislike sweets and I figured if it is called bread it probably isn't terribly sweet (I was right). It was $7.50 for a small, yet hefty loaf. More than bread at your supermarket, but for the quality it is worth it. I felt like I was cradling a small baby as I walked out with it, it was so heavy. It was also still warm. Score! On my long drive back I took a couple bites out of the loaf because I wanted to try it while it was warm. It was absolutely delicious. Don't let the small size deceive you, because it is so substantial a few bites fill you up (or maybe I'm filled with a baby inside me, who knows). Yes, I drove 25 minutes for one loaf of bread, but I will happily do it again. Also, they are at the Saturday Farmer's Market so I could try to get my fix there as well. Five stars for delicious, filling, homemade bread. Now someone please destroy this bread desert and open a bread bakery closer to me. read more

I wanted so much to like this bakery after all the great reviews. Drove 20 minutes for bread. Bought two prosuitto and cheese littles which were good warmed up. No challah bread raisin bread or chibatta were available when I was there. Disappointed but guess they were available on different days. Of the bread available the day I went bought a peasant bread. Got it home and it felt soft like it was not fresh. Did not have a nice flavor. Maybe I was expecting something different. Got moldy after two days and had to throw it out. This place is awesome. We've been going here a couple of years, my husband, my son and I. It is open 3 days a week. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I think they are open from 7 AM until 2 on these days. Quite possibly the best smelling bakery in all of Tampa bay. The retail portion is only open a few days a week, so I put it on my radar to check out this morning. When I arrived a little before 10, A LOT was already sold out. That is how popular this place is. The lady offered me a sample of the cranberry/walnut (what I went with) and the carrot. Both were wonderful and made with quality ingredients, but the cranberry/walnut won me over. And to top things off, they have a wide selection of snacks/desserts. I've gotten their breads at markets But only recently went to the store. It's right by my yoga studio, So I will definitely be going more! I wanted a loaf of carrot cake bread But when I got there, it was still in the oven. I was only slightly disappointed They have many other breads worth loving. I discovered 20 Shekels Bread at Hyde Park's Fresh Market today. This bread is freaking amazing!!! I have been avoiding eating bread lately, but I discovered 20 Shekels makes some of their breads with sprouted wheat. If you are unfamiliar with sprouted wheat let me give you a brief rundown... Sprouted wheat is denser in nutrients and has more fiber than breads made with processed wheat. Breads with sprouted wheat are easier to digest and are lower in cholesterol, fat and sodium. Whether or not you are interested in the health benefits here is the bottom line: it tastes really good! (If the idea of eating anything healthy scares you then rest assure; not all of their breads are made with sprouted wheat.) They carry the most amazing rosemary ciabatta and garlic ciabatta bread! 20 Shekels Bread makes five different varieties of sprouted breads including: Ezekiel, Muesli, Chocolate Blackberry, Walnut Pear and Peasant. The Ezekiel bread has a pretty cool story. I was waiting for an opportunity to try this bread and finally, success! We popped by their stand at the Sweetwater Sunday Farmer's market in Tampa and we were not disappointed. Rather than choosing, we did the only 'logical' thing and had one loaf of everything they had on hand that day. Wow! I just had a small dessert blueberry bread with a bit of butter. I'm in heaven. I got a fresh bake load of chocolate black berry sprouted bread. It was so unique and tasted denser than regular wheat bread. It tasted very good. One slice is enough for breakfast. The owner friendly greeted me and other customers . She explained to me the difference of sprouted bread and regular bread. This was my first time trying the sprouted bread. I was impressed. This is what I call a "Must Go Bakery"! Stopped by here while in Clearwater to grab a quick bite to eat. Walking in, you're immediately immersed in a very hip, old-fashioned feel. The bakery itself is very simple. They have one counter and behind the counter, they have the daily breads they're selling. I got a loaf of blueberry bread and ugh....it was delicious. They baked a perfect loaf of bread that has a good mixture of moisture, texture, and the sweets from the fruit. Shekels offers a wide selection of not only breads, but also cakes, muffins, and other baked goods! All of their breads seem pretty fresh so you can't go wrong here. The price is decent to. For homemade, fresh bread, I would say Shekels is a fair deal. Also, everyone there is very nice and inviting. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! Every bread I've ever had or tasted from them has been fantastic. I buy their bread at any farmers market I can find them. It's always freshly baked and oozing with deliciousness. The minis are delightful and often times stuffed with fun fruit pieces. I've had the pleasure of having the strawberry macadamia nut and blackberry minis. The sprouted grain breads are fantastic. I usually get the pear and walnut sprouted wheat bread, but this weekend they had a chocolate version. When I got home, I was delighted to find raspberries inside! If you want Ezekiel breads this place is great. The staff is also very friendly and knowledgeable about the entire baking process and what is available that day. I guess where they miss the fifth star is we purchased several breads which were very good but also a prosciutto stuffed roll and a multi berry Crumble. The roll was soft but the filling was sparse. The Danish although had fresh fruit was really hard and overly dry in spots. It is also a small storefront so when you go through the front door you are at the display. Brilliant little bakery with friendly, knowledgeable staff and quality baked goods you can swear by. I tried a loaf of dark chocolate and blackberry bread made with sprouted wheat flour. Wow! It became my perfect airplane companion, and kept me well fed and happy mouthed for most of my 12 hour trip back to Hawaii. Flavors were well balanced, texture was rich and springy, and each chocolate morsel and blackberry were truly satisfying oral discoveries. I also went for a chocolate quinoa tart, and despite the apparent strangeness of combining its two namesake ingredients, this creation was a chocolate lover's fantasy, quite like flourless chocolate cake but with an extra lovely texture. Tried this for the first time today after reading the reviews. It is about a 25 minute drive from where we live at Redington but well worth the trouble. We went on a Sunday morning around 9 am and it wasn't crowded. They had a good selection of bakery items but consistent flow of customers in and out and I could see they were already getting low for some items. We bought their cinnamon raisin bread, rosemary ciabatta, and several different cookies. We wanted to try them out before buying more but I should have gone ahead...I could tell immediately they were high quality. The service person was nice and helpful, but not overly so...perfect service. Everything we bought was absolutely delicious and about half eaten by the time we got back to our house. My husband declared the oatmeal cookies his favorite but all were good. They aren't open again until Thursday but we will definitely go back. Finally made the trip to 20 Shekels Bread. So glad we did! So many choices. Breakfast pizzas, cookies, breads! Yum! We choose the breakfast pizza. I've been wanting to try this little bakery out for a while now, so I told myself that whatever happens, I needed to make it here this weekend. Well, what had happened was.. Haha I went out last night and could not get up early enough this morning to get there and choose from a variety of choices. As soon as you walk in the smell of fresh baked goods hits you in the face. It smelled so good I wanted to eat the air. Unfortunately, I walked in at 10:30, and the cases were completely swiped out, they literally had 5 lonely little breads left. I managed to get my hands on a stuffed chocolate hazelnut, and stuffed spinach cheese bread. I was trying to wait to eat breakfast first, and then eat the breads later, but anyone who knows me, knows that I don't have the will power when it comes to having any food in my car, the air filling with deliciousness. I really don't understand those people who can go get food, and drive all the way home with it, not even touching the bag or box! ? That's like an incredible Super Power to me. You guys are amazing! Really, you are!! .. Because THAT never happens in my car. Nothing makes it past the light. Once I got in my car, I knew these breads wouldn't make it one minute. My hand busted straight through the bag, I took the quick pic and a immediate bite. They were surprisingly dense, they had a good little weight to them. Chewy outside, soft in the middle with a nice little treat inside. They were everything that my fellow yelpers had been describing them to be. I'm definitely going back, and early next time. Hopefully, I can get my hands on a strawberry banana roll or anything with fruit would be great. I also noticed that they have Java Planet organic coffee here. Seriously the best breads!! I feel sick after eating most breads but not with these! The Ezekiel bread was soft and lightly sweet, my toddler loved it! There are not enough words to praise the Zeke Strada. A flavorful, moist quiche with veggies and cheese and Ezekiel bread in it. Delicious! Also tried the breakfast pizza and Italian meat and cheese. I have to speak to my favorite -- the Ezekiel ('Zeke, for those in the know) is a top notch product. This stuff is on the far end of the spectrum from Wonder Bread -- in that it is delicious AND good for you. I have a slice with butter on it for breakfast with my coffee, and the flavor is great, the texture is dense, and it's loaded with yummy good things (ask what's in it!). 20 Shekels has been making a name for themselves at a bunch of the local Clearwater-area Farmer's Markets. I have to stay away from The Evil Wheat Gluten. Thankfully, I don't have to stay away from 20 Shekels sprouted breads. They cram a lot of good stuff into the Muesli and Zeke, and they tend to have a pretty good variety of other sprouted-grain breads like chocolate blackberry, pear and walnut and other seasonal stuff. The "regular" breads smell and look great, but I haven't tasted them myself. I'm sure you "regular" people will love them. read more

Awesome little bread store probably more hipster than I deserved being an old over 50 guy myself but they were pleasant and the bread was so wonderful loved their savory meat and cheese roll. The 20 Shekels storefront is beautiful and friendly. It was my first time in the store and the staff eagerly gave me the tour of all the breads on display and offered great recommendations. The owner came out with samples of the bread I was considering. They sell out quickly, so if you have a specific loaf in mind, be sure to call ahead and they will put it on hold for you. Today I picked up a fruit tart. She mentioned they don't typically make them, but if I like it and want it again, to call her and she will make them for me.
