We agreed that they were fun and playful. My dad immediately plopped himself down on one of the cozy chairs in the front while my mom and I browsed. I admit, I don't usually read romance because I can't handle spice, but I still found a cool book published just last month, and by a Filipino author, too. I'm excited to read it and hopefully share it with my friends. Speaking of friends, I couldn't resist picking up a bookmark for my purple-loving friend and a sticker for my cat-loving friend. Other "accessories" included cards, totes, journals, charms, and Kindle cases. Overall, it's a cute place with a lot of heart, and I'm curious to come back during the holiday season.

I keep trying to give this bookstore a chance but it fails every single time! When I walk in it feels like I'm bothering the employees who work there. No one ever says "Hi" or actively tries to engage, and frankly if I'm looking for something their demeanor doesn't make me want to ask. And this is a sentiment I've seen for all the people I've seen behind the cash wrap. I've gone on days they have authors, and literally they don't even introduce the author, or explain the event happening, you're blatantly ignored! I'd love to love this bookstore so much, social media makes it seems so fun, but it fails, and I can't even say it's because I'm a guy as I've gone in with several girls friends of mine so clearly they just hate shoppers. I rather drive hours to other SoCal bookstores and be pleasantly invited and have a fun moment than drive 10mins to this book shop. It's also nice to see I'm not the only one feeling this way. I found a beautiful coffee table book, a thoughtful anthology, a delightful cookbook, a wonderful classic, two gifts for my mom, two books that were adapted into famous movies, two very different memoirs, and perhaps best of all, one book that the owner noted as "really good." We honestly expected a…read morequiet evening with a couple of people, and we were happily surprised to arrive to a bustling space. We almost resigned ourselves to standing in the back, but we were quickly and kindly ushered to a couch. Everyone who went up to the mic was so, so good. All genres were represented: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, children's, comics. Two people even gave rousing music performances. Many people read in Spanish, and every single person read with humor, heart, and honesty. There were a lot of laughs and a lot of tears. The store truly is a safe space. Do I feel bad for not buying any books by Hispanic or Latino authors? A little bit... which is why I promise to come back and keep supporting this wonderful, beautiful, meaningful haven. I had planned to do some shopping too, but it was really crowded with other individuals dropping off donations (one woman that was so incredibly rude and pushed me and my stuff out of her way for absolutely no reason) and then also people coming to grab some items at the same time. The few items I did look at on my way out were priced a lot higher than I was expecting so I chose to go on about my day. In their glass case, they currently have a Bruce Lee book in their collector's section that I really want, but you know my son's gotta eat and we can eat books. The service has and consistently is highly knowledgeable, patient, and welcoming to not just us, but to all who walk in. The value is = or better than Barnes and Nobles because they have point systems and 2 x a year, the local's favorite..."The Fire Sale!" Indoors is just as awesome. The space is very big, nicely lit, thoroughly organized, and perfectly cool thanks to air conditioning. We easily spent an hour browsing, or rather, I spent an hour browsing, and my mom happily stayed in the art section. I swear I didn't only pick book covers with warm color palettes on purpose. However, when I was at the counter, I was encouraged to pick out a free bookmark not once, but twice. Naturally, I obliged. While I quite like my rugged cowboy bookmark, you might be pleased to know that other options included dames and aliens.

This year was the first time I was a panelist, so I got to go for free! -The best of the best cosplayers come out! It's spring so the weather is a lot cooler and easier to cosplay. -Lots of vendors, artists, and B/C list celebrities. -Lots of panels to learn and entertain yourself at. -Lots of nearby hotel options that are reasonable priced. -Lots of great meetups. -Easy to buy a ticket.

My friend and I were approached by three different employees during our time there. They asked if they could assist us with anything and gave some great recommendations. I was looking for a fantasy book for my teenage brother and the employee was incredibly helpful giving recommendations, finding the "teen book of the month." I didn't even know they had a teen book of the month! The organization of the store was great. The categories and book selections that were specially displayed were especially helpful. For example, in their AAPI stories section I was able to find some really interesting books that I might have not otherwise seen. A selection of their Barnes and Noble specialty book covers that feature some classic works (like Pride and Prejudice and Winnie the Pooh) were on sale for between $8-$12. For such a beautiful high quality book, I would definitely return to purchase one of those at that price. The other books though were a bit pricey. The employees there made this visit extra enjoyable. I don't go to Barnes and Noble very often, but yesterday's visit makes me want to return again soon.
