I have eaten here for brunch once and a couple times for dinner. I absolutely love the brunch tacos with steak. That was a 10/10 meal. Just as an fyi they had a DJ playing so if you aren't fond of live music just be prepared. It wasn't too loud tho, in my opinion and we were seated near by it. Dinner was lovely as well. The pizza was great, and I am obsessed with the chicken parmigiana. I could eat that every time I go. My husband also loves there steak. Came here for Saturday brunch for a friends birthday. Service, food, and drinks were phenomenal! The red velvet pancakes and cotton candy tower were such a great starter for brunch. We also did the veuve clicqout mimosa tray which was so beautiful. The manager let our party of 3 for my girlfriends birthday even move to the baby blue suede booth since it wasn't being used (normally $1500 minimum!). Had such amazing service and such a great time. I just moved to the area from AZ and went to 220 Merrill for the first time. I had an amazing dining experience. Being that it was my first visit I was unsure what to order. My server Alex was super helpful and shared with us his favorite menus items and cocktails. Every single one of his recommendations was spot on and made our experience unforgettable. If you decide to dine here make sure you ask to sit in his section and order the Fuzzy Bubbles cocktail he recommended. His upbeat demeanor and positive personality made our entire day. This will for sure be one of my regular spots, because it's hard to find good food but even harder to find unbelievable service that Alex provided. 2019-02-04. Restaurant week this week is In Birmingham. 220 Merrill happens to be one of the participating and is offering a prix fixe lunch. Your choice of appetizer, main, and dessert for $18 (not inclusive of tax and gratuities). If you want to partake, you have until the end of the week (2019-02-08). Located in Downtown Birmingham at, you guessed it, 220 Merrill street, there is metered street parking at $1,50/hr with a max of 1 hour. There is also a parking structure behind the restaurant with the entrance off the adjacent street. I also noticed a Valet parking board indicating $8, but did not see an attendant on duty. There is a small open air patio on the easement property which is closed for the season. The building was the old Edison building originally constructed in 1932, shortly after the onset of the Great Depression. It underwent a couple of restorations, the 1st in 1979, and the the city's first full service restaurant was born. The place served as a local gathering place for many for 15 years. In 1993, the restaurant was sold. On July 1, 1994, it was reopened under new ownership and management. The popularity of the place over the years caused it be nicknamed; and was shortened to be known as simply, 220. The 2nd renovation came 20 years later and once again ownership changed hands. It reopened on July 30, 2014 keeping the name and serving mainly contemporary American cuisine. Inside the decor is a mix of old and new, classic and contemporary. Big bay windows let in natural light with a view of the outdoor patio and passerby's on Merrill. Broad planks of engineered weathered oak looking like they have stood the test of time serve as the floor. Atop the old, rests modern contemporary steel framed chairs with classic wooden tables covering the perimeter windows. The center tables are also wooden, but seating changes to cushioned pleather. A bar is the centerpiece of this outer dining area. On either side of this small bar are entrances to the inner dining rooms. The same tables and cushioned chairs adorn the space; however, the lighting dims and the scene becomes more intimate. Away with the Art Deco lighting from out front and the soft glow from the fixtures emits a warmth that washes over the room for a more intimate setting. Adjacent to the bar is a espresso counter. I apologize in advance for not getting to the food, but to me the dining experience is more than what touches the palette; the venue is also a critical element in setting the scene. And a place such as this that's so rich in history and decor is worth a once over. It looks like I will not have enough room to complete my review, so I will write a follow up review detailing the offerings on their prix fixe menu. But I wanted to get this out there since restaurant and 220's prix fixe ends this week. The four star rating is for 220's participation in restaurant week, of which I'm definitely a fan. It gives people the opportunity to sample the chefs culinary skills without breaking the bank, and at the same time gives you the opportunity to determine whether or not you're a true fan of the cuisine. I've tried dining here twice on a work trip. Both occasions I felt rushed, had eye rolls from the server, never brought water until a kind random waiter noticed, my espresso martini was flat, the pizza tastes frozen, and the pasta is very small. The main issue I have is the rude staff. I'm from Chicago which has the best restaurants in the world. I eat at Michelin star restaurants a lot and live minutes away. I come here and not only is the food bad, but the snobby attitudes of certain wait staff is bad. Just because interior is cute and you have veuve umbrellas doesn't mean you're going to enjoy your dining experience. Never again. Embarrassing really. read more

Came here for Valentines Day, and 220 Merrill delivered exactly what we had hoped for. Top notch service, delectable cocktails (my wife was blown away by the Merrill cocktail), and food that will knock your socks off. Food was great and I had a great time celebrating my birthday until the next day when I noticed my card had been charged an additional $108 over the bill I paid. Because our party was a group of 7, 20%gratuity was automatically added in. Before disputing with my bank I decided to call the restaurant. I had to call a total of 3 times before anyone called me back. Finally a manger name Rita phoned back and very rudely stated "yes, you were charged $373.14 and it should have been $266. We will refund you $107.14" She offered NO explanation or even an apology for the over-charge or an apology for me having to call 3 times to to get a resolve!! ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. Was really excited to try this place.. the service was absolutely TERRIBLE. It's a Wednesday night and the our waiter only had one table prior to us. Then an obvious friend comes in and get a table (so three total) he is standing right next to us for 10 minutes talking to his friend with his back to us while we just sit and wait. Finally had a buser try and get the servers attention but he was so engulfed in conversations he had to grab a manager who then got the server for us. Put in the order.. server went back to fraternizing with his buddy at the table next to us. Someone else bought out the food and asked if we wanted fresh ground pepper but then never came back with it. So again we can only get the busers attention who grabbed salt and pepper for us. Everything with the food was good. Then the bill comes ($55) and I specifically said please put $30 in cash and the rest on the card... wouldn't you know he put the whole $55 on the card and took the cash. Thankfully I caught it. Beautiful renovations, so excited and happy it's now open. Very piece of the interior design looks as if it was picked and done. From the ceilings, walls, tables/chairs, and the bathrooms. Every detail done to perfection. Came for the first time since it reopened for lunch, host and waitstaff were all very pleasant. I ordered the calamari and truffle fries as appetizer, they were so delicious that I ordered a second round of the same lol. Had the chopped salad with grilled chicken and it mehh. I wasn't a fan of the dressing and the chicken was a tad bit dry. Our lattes were delicious and my niece enjoyed her tomato mozorella flat bread. I also was given a complimentary dessert of a vanilla cupcake with buttercream frosting in a small mason jar. That was the last and final great touch of class. read more

I went there for my birthday. Overall it was a lot of fun, food tasted really good, service was great. A couple of issues I had was that they had forgotten that the reason for the big dinner was my birthday after they had specifically asked whether I was celebrating anything (not a big deal tbh). However once one my friends told them then they got me a giant pink cotton ball in a martini glass, on the house, and we got to take lots of cute pics with it and enjoyed eating it as well. Secondly, they do not split bills for large parties which was a bit of a hassle but we told them how much to charge on each credit card so not that big a deal. Overall I had a great time, food was great, love the ambience. Also went downstairs to the rose room where the music is always great, enjoyed a few drinks there. Love the new 220!! The ambiance is great, the bar is vibrant and the wait staff is awesome and fun (Jeffrey and Lisa are great!!). They remember you every time you come back. Sat at the bar last night and ordered appetizers- the beet salad was very refreshing- just the right amount of beets! The grilled octopus was perfectly cooked and very savory. The tuna tartare was so yummy! Make sure you get an order of the bread because it tastes like crazy bread from little Caesars, but more gourmet. Came here on Valentine's Day with my boyfriend. I loved the decor as soon as I walked in. Sophisticated/cozy look. We sat in the dining room. All of the tables were set so beautifully with red roses. The featured cocktails were delicious. I wanted to try them all! We had the artichoke dip with crab, wow, probably one of the best I have ever had and to top it with crab just put it over the edge! I had the perch with a side of Mac & Cheese. Everything was fantastic. Great for anniversary, birthdays, and just a night with the girls. I will absolutely be coming back soon. read more
