Finally found authentic Thai food -- best in Northern VA! I've been searching for a place that does real Thai noodles, street food, and Essan dishes right -- and I found it, right here in the Leesburg area. I ordered the boat noodles and the crispy duck noodle soup. The broth is done right: no MSG aftertaste, aroma is spot-on, and the sweetness-to-savory balance is perfect. Noodles are cooked just right, and the meat is fresh. Customer service was excellent too -- attentive and friendly without being overbearing. I noticed a lot of Thai and other Asian diners ordering the same signature dishes -- always a good sign. This is hands-down the best Thai spot in Northern VA. You know a restaurant is special when the kindness of the staff alone makes you want to come back. Everyone was so welcoming and genuinely friendly, which made the whole experience even better. The atmosphere was great, and the menu had some unique options that you don't see everywhere. I especially appreciated that when you ask for spicy, they actually make it spicy!! This popped up on Grubhub and I saw it was fairly new and local, so I gave it a try. It arrived very quickly for delivery. I got chicken pad Thai, level 2 spicy, and vegetable spring rolls. The spring rolls were PHENOMENAL. Even after being delivered, they were super light and crispy and the filling was delicious. The sauce is classic, but good. The pad Thai was good but not great. It felt like it was lacking something but I couldn't put my finger on it. The one thing I found odd is that it has sliced red onions in it, which I've never seen in pad Thai in the DMV before. It added an odd tang that wasn't really welcomed in the dish. I look forward to seeing what else this restaurant has to offer in the future. read more

We would never have known about this restaurant if Yelp hadn't sent an email suggesting places to try in the area. This place is set back far from Elden Street so it's not like one can spot it while driving down the road. Apparently, according to the reviews, they took over a spot where another Thai restaurant had occupied. Over the years, I heard of a Thai place in that area, but I was never sure of its exact location. When looking for this Thai restaurant, take note that it is right behind and to the left of Virginia Tire and Auto. If you are headed into Herndon, take the first turn lane to the left once you pass under the Fairfax County Parkway. There is a short stairway under the red sign, as well as a ramp just around the corner. We were interested in going for a meal. Their menu is Northern Thai, but they do have some southern staples. We wanted to finally try northern cuisine. The place is closed from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. We arrived minutes after 5 p.m. At that time, there was one occupied table. We were greeted and seated. Over time, more customers came along. Several of the customers knew some of the staff and greeted them warmly. The staff was very friendly and attentive without being overbearing. At one point, the manager came around to ask diners how their food was. We told him it was very good. I had a Thai iced tea and my husband had a Heineken 00. We ordered an appetizer: chicken wings, fried and served with a Thai sweet-and-sour dipping sauce. The wings were meaty, moist, and crispy. There were two containers of dipping sauce, one sweeter and the other hotter. We used only a small amount of sauce because we liked the wings as is. For my entree, I chose Pad Tia-Gram, which (supposedly) consists of: "Meat of your choice stir-fried with fresh garlic, stir-fried with choice of protein served with fresh cabbage and Jasmine rice." There was no cabbage to be seen. Instead, broccoli was used. This is a mild dish. I could taste the garlic, but it wasn't overpowering. I considered getting chicken, but the server said it would be a mix of light and dark meat. I don't care for dark meat, so I had this dish with beef. The sliced beef was both tender and plentiful. My husband ordered Pad Pak, which consists of: "Meat of your choice stir-fried with broccoli, carrots, celery, baby corn, and cabbage in garlic sauce, served with jasmine rice. He added shrimp to his dish, and it had several pieces of cabbage. Several large shrimp were visible. Each entree was served with a sizable portion of Jasmine rice. Overall, we're glad we gave them a try; my husband was really pleased with how close by it is. The decor is simple but tasteful. The seating is very comfortable, and the dining room has booths and tables with enough space for the food served. Lastly, this restaurant's servers have access to the latest portable point-of-sale devices if you are using a credit card. On the whole, it was a very pleasant visit. We will return. read more

Loved everything I got to try out from 246 Thai Street. Parking was easy and orders were ready upon arrival. The Thai fried rice was delicious. Just wished I had chosen a different protein because the pork was thinly sliced and really overcooked + dry. It would have been nice to add a bit of cilantro and tomatoes as additional garnish. The Nam-Tok Nua had a nice smoky flavor to it. It made for a great protein topping for the salad I had at home. If I had gotten this at the restaurant and didn't know it doesn't come with any rice or salad or something else, I would have been quite upset. The portions are tiny as are the Yum Naem Khao Tod. Same thing. Best eaten over salad greens since it's otherwise salty and delicious but doesn't come with other accompaniments. Would I order from here again? Absolutely! Just be warned the portions are tiny and you may need to order several dishes to share with others. read more

As suckers for any sort of Northern Thai food, my wife and I were intrigued by the seemingly authentic offerings at 246 Thai Street. We decided to check it out for a quick, weekday lunch and had a great meal. The restaurant is tucked away in an office complex and is very easy to miss. Its modest exterior hides a surprisingly nice interior with modern jade and gold accents and a handsome back bar. We ordered two salads and two entrees. This amount of food was, unsurprisingly, too much for the two of u, but we wanted to sample a decent cross section of the menu so no regrets. We started off with the Lao papaya salad and the Naem Khao Tod. We love the strong fish sauce flavor of Lao style papaya salads, and the worthy rendition here balanced that fermented funk with the ideal amount of lime juice, chili, and sugar. The addictive naem khao crispy rice salad rivaled our favorite at Padaek. While a little less crunchy and roasty, the version 246 serves brings more tang and heat and is thus equally successful. We went a little off the beaten path with our entrees and are glad we did. I ordered a crispy duck noodle soup which offered a rich, aromatic duck broth with an ample quantity of tender yet crisp meat, springy egg noodles, and hearty vegetables. Perked up with some classic Thai condiments, the soup brought plenty of flavor while remaining comforting. We ordered my wife's moo tod garlic vermicelli not really knowing what to expect. We were rewarded with a unique and super tasty dish which comprised soft rice noodles tossed with pungent, aromatic fried garlic and shallots and topped with simultaneously meltingly tender and shatteringly crisp slices of pork belly. While the flavors ran more savory and oniony than our usual spicy-sour preference, we found the seasoning addictive and kept coming back for more bites. Service here was sweet and friendly. Prices here are on par with area competitors. 246 Thai is well worth a visit for authentic, difficult to find flavors and dishes. We are already planning our return visit to taste more of the unique menu. read more

Wow. I used to love the old Thai restaurant that was here and didn't think the new one will be as good but took me by surprised!! it even better. The service is amazing with some old staffs still working there. They make the restaurant more open and didn't over fill with too much table which it good because the restaurant it not that big, but the food quality and flavor make up for it. FOOD 5/5 - Wow all the food was so good, not Americanize and not overly sweet to please the local American taste pallet. All star Om Beef stew 5/5 ($18.95)- I literally cry eating this, it takes me to being back in northern Thailand as a child. The savory and the aroma of the dill with spice and herbs was so satisfying. I am going to try next time with pork because the beef was tad bit lean for me. Laos Papaya Salad 5/5 ($9.95)- So flavorful, spicy, tangy and umami from the fermented fish sauce. I can eat it every day. I love that didn't taste overly too sweet like most typical Thai restaurant premade papaya mixing sauce. Gai Yang & Sticky Rice 4/5 ($12.95) - The description say it was going to be chicken wing, but it was actually chicken thigh. Normally I would question why the menu was misleading but luckily the thigh was nicely flavor and marinated well. I would still prefer the wings but overall, it was good and the sticky rice was soft Beef Oyster Sauce 5/5 ($18.95) - Basic stir ffry beef with oyster sauce, if you like beef broccoli you would like it. We ordered yellow curry with chicken, pineapple fried rice, appetizer duck roll and dumplings. Dumplings were perfect!!! tha Duck Roll: extremely flavorful, crunchy and unexpected Delight. No, what do you say about fried rice? Pineapple fried rice with shrimp and chicken. Excellent taste however the shrimp did not pop it was overcooked. Yellow Curry so so good. Tried 246 Thai with family and it was even better than Thai Luan. It helped break me out of a bit of a Thai food rut. Their (possibly limited-time) fixed price Grand Opening menu introduced us to about six regional dishes we probably would not have ordered otherwise, and they were fantastic. That menu skips some of the most common Thai dishes like chicken satay, pad thai, and red or green curries, although those are still available. Instead it focuses on regional specialties. My favorite was the Northern Ginger Curry (Kaeng Hung Lay). The fatty pork might not be for everyone, but the depth of flavor and the default heat level were perfect. The Isan herbal soup served with it was light and refreshing and balanced the richness well. For dessert we had the custard with sticky rice, which had a great texture and just the right amount of sweetness. The drinks menu was also great. My wife ordered The Garden (or something close to that name) and it was complex and fun. Service was responsive and the ambiance felt modern urban chic with an open layout. Overall it was a great experience. Looking forward to making this a regular spot and bringing friends. read more
