Not sure if there's a new chef or an off night in the kitchen, but the food definitely didn't taste like the Thai dishes we're used to. Hoping it was just an off visit or I should stick to the pad thai? Truly disappointed, nothing worse than looking forward to eating some good food but it turns out bad. We ordered a few staples and unfortunately most of the dishes tasted...off. The drunken noodles were a miss -- the noodles themselves were oddly firm and the onions were still pretty hard, like they hadn't been cooked long enough. I had to throw away over half of the meal. The duck was also overcooked and a bit tough, which took away from what should have been a really flavorful dish. The tom yum soup also had a strange aftertaste and felt like it was missing that bright, punchy balance of sour and spice that usually makes this soup so good. It just tasted a little flat and confusing flavor-wise. The one bright spot was the fried banana for dessert -- hot, crispy, and easily the best thing we had all night. I spent $40 on these items- and it was truly a disappointing meal overall. If I hadn't gotten it to-go, I would have asked for a different dish for sure. read more

This is a cute spot tucked in the back corner of a shopping center. There's plenty of parking. Check their hours since we got there at 4 but it doesn't open until 4:30 for dinner. I'm glad we waited. I got Thai fried rice with ground chicken (but minus tomatoes). This was delicious and a huge portion for $18.95. I also had the eggplant basil with shrimp added for $22.95. I ordered it "medium spicy" but think they might have toned it down a bit. It was tasty but I'd try a different dish next time, My friend has 2 appetizers that I got to taste. The fried tofu was solid, but the Hoi-Jor (deep fried mixed shrimp and pork jn wonton-type wrappers) were definitely the star dish. She also had shrimp pad Thai and really enjoyed it. The portions are sizable and very tasty. But what really sets NuNu's apart is the service. Nunu and his family are solicitous, attentive, and genuinely care about each patron, I saw them hug "regulars". They happily and correctly split our checks even though we forgot to tell them up front. They thanked us repeatedly for coming. We will absolutely go back - hopefully on a less hot day so can try the duck soup. read more

First time dining in here. For a Saturday around noon it was empty. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. I ordered a few items but asked for extra resulting in up charges during the lunch special. Which was not a problem. I asked for the lunch soup which was by itself a $4.50 up charge for substituting to a soup from a wonton that would've only been one wonton after further clarification. While the soup was very tasty the amount for the up charge I thought was too much, mainly because the portion was so small. So, I did not appreciate that. Quality was great but price for the quantity I think was too much. For one person, I ordered 8 piece cheese wonton, an entree adding extra meat, in addition to the soup, and a Thai iced tea. I asked for a Thai iced tea to go which was also charged for a small cup. On the contrary, other great Thai places do not charge for refills and if they do their cup sizes are bigger making up for the charge. Overall, quality was 4/5. The entree was a bit dry and could have been complimented with a little sauce. Portion for the entree was not bad (it was $24 with the up charge). Appetizer I thought was reasonably priced. Thai iced tea was well made. I think I would return but would be nervous I will be paying a lot for a little portion that may make me reconsider coming here versus another highly rated Thai establishment. Try the crispy duck panang curry! I've never had duck prepared the way they do it, but the outside was so crispy and the duck was not dry at all. Pairing it with the sweet and spicy panang curry creates a perfect meal! The Thai tea is also delicious. Good tea flavor and the right amount of sweetness. read more

I've been here before and got a duck dish which wasn't bad! I tried it again coming with a friend and the flavor was lacking. It was not comparable to other Thai restaurants that i've tried, not sure if it was just a fluke this time. Three words- crispy duck soup! If you haven't had it, it's a must! Not sure how they do it but the duck actually retains its crispness even a day later (when I've taken this soup back for leftovers). The rest of the food is also very delicious! The sun dried beef and the volcano shrimp are my usual go tos- other dishes are a bonus! read more

My favorite dish at NuNu is their duck noodle soup. I've enjoyed and followed that soup since days of Thai Luang to Thai Tada and finally to NuNu. Aside from the duck noodle soup, we also get the duck basil, pork with string beans, red curry, drunken noodles, and pad thai. Their appetizers of fried spring rolls and papaya salad are great starters. I have several local Thai restaurants that is my staple that I would not hesitate to recommend to my friends and this is one of them. If you ever watch Cheers, this place will remind you of that show as it is always full of regulars at the bar. If you want great food and excellent services, go to NuNu. It will become one of your favorite Thai restaurant quickly. read more

This is by far the best Thai food I've ever had. I live in Maryland and wish I lived closer, because I'd be here every week. The food is amazing but Nunu, the owner is awesome! He's very welcoming and makes sure everyone is enjoying themselves. Had dinner here last night. Ordered drunken noodles ($17.95) and basil fried rice ($21.95). Really disappointed with the basil fried rice because what I ate was not basil fried rice as it did not have any basil leaves in it and no smell. Also the rice used is not the right rice for basil fried rice. So rate 4 out of 10 for the most expensive basil fried rice. And 5 out of 10 for drunken noodles. Service was excellent but the owner bragged about serving us a generous portion of his basil fried rice but unfortunately i have had much better basil fried rice in other thai restaurants. Highlight was the Panang Curry and Chicken Curry Puff. The Chicken Curry Puff was very flavorful and was crispy/flaky. The Panang Curry wasn't too sweet which I appreciated. The Drunken Noodle was saucy but not as flavorful as I would have liked - also the noodles seemed overcooked. Price was fair/reasonable - typical for Thai food/restaurant. Service/Experience: 4.5 stars The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Took our order quickly however we did have to wait longer than expected for our food (taking into account that it was a busy Saturday night). My family came to Nunus after helping my sister move. We ordered the Pad Thia, Crispy Duck, Crispy Duck curry, Basil thai fried rice, egg plant, and Drunken Noodles. We were starving so we cleaned up everything. My little brother got Thai tea but in my opinion it was too sweet. The Drunken noodles were slightly disappointing cause I normally love Drunken noodles from other places. I also thought the fried rice were flavorful but bit too wet. Our favorites were the pad thai and the curry duck. By the time the pad thai hit the table, half of it was gone. My sister asked me to quickly pass her some before all of it was gone. The owner is quite involved in serving and talking to customers, which is always makes for a refreshing experience. They had plenty of options, especially vegetarian. The Garlic Lover made sure to emphasize the aromatic characteristic of well, the garlic. Good amount of meat to vegetable ratio, and the broccoli was well cooked and crunchy. I'll admit the Drunken bamboo wasn't very spicy, but it certainly was also delicious. It is a clean restaurant and the ambiance gives a cozy cool vibe from the red booths and low lighting. Nunu's is among the best Thai in the DMV. The owner is a great guy as well. My go to's are the Duck Salad, Dumplings, and the Basil dishes- Crispy Chicken, Basil with Beef, and the Snapper. I do feel that since Covid prices have gone up and consistency has gone down just a little. But I'd say the same for the majority of restaurants in this area. The best Thai food on Mother EARTH! Sala Thai on Amsterdam Ave is a 4.9. This is leagues better! Order Thai spicy if you have the gumption! It's hard for me to give this place 2.5/5, because I really love the food (and prices), but I believe that any restaurant that makes you feel unwelcome or as if you should have ordered in instead deserves a lower rating. The customer service - from what I've seen and experienced - is conditional. I've come here a handful of times and I don't believe I was treated the best. Perhaps it was the smaller size of my order, or that, a vegetarian order, or perhaps not ordering drinks, or perhaps me being a person of color, but regardless, I've been made to feel uncomfortable being here, and even talked about. Contrarily, I have seen those at the bar (who were predominantly Caucasian) get much better and friendlier service. Not sure why there seems to be conditional service. The younger lady who works there is the partial reason why... It's really sad, because I do enjoy their food, but if I ever order here again, it will be likely take out. read more

We were seated right away, quite a cozy place bigger than what it seemed from the outside. Food was good, not too spicy (catering more to the general palates, I could have asked for amped up spice level). I ordered curry. Christmas Eve dinner. Busy restaurant with full of joy and laughter. A hidden gem in Herndon! Despite the fact that we had no reservation, they sat us relatively right away. The interior was nothing fancy but cozy. There were a lot of group outings as family. It gave us more reason to keep the high expectation. We thought the price was reasonable for the amount and quality of ingredients. We ordered two appetizers (chicken coconut soup and fresh garden roll) and two entrees (Muni's beef noodle soup and drunken noodle). As I mentioned the food quality was amazing. It all seems made to order. A lot of protein for all the entrees which we definitely loved. The drunken noodle dish seemed little saucier than usual drunken noodle dish we get from other Thai restaurants. However, it still was flavorful dish. The most noticeable thing that we remembered was how all staffs were attentive to customer's needs and spreading great energy when they engage. Many customers seem to be regulars who appreciates family like customer service. I would like to recommend local Thai food lovers and Herndon residents. read more

The chicken was sliced thin and air fried- concept was good, but the chicken was over cooked and was like leather. The vegetables, sauce and rice were good, though. When I told my server I did not like it and why, she got the owner who apologized and adjusted my bill with 10% discount. He also suggested that I try a different dish next time. If you read the reviews here carefully, you will notice some that clearly indicate that good service is conditional. I read at least 2 reviews in the first ten that indicate that good service isn't good if you are a person of color. I may be wrong but that was my only viable conclusion with my experience om 11/10/22. I write this review because I believe people can change themselves or change policy. When I opened the door, a younger lady excitedly and bubbly exclaimed: "Hi welcome!" She was sitting doing something and so she hadn't looked at me. When she finally looked up, she came close and told me "sorry we are closed." There was absolutely no explanation until I asked if they were closed for the day while the door was still open and a lady had just walked out when I opened the door. She looked like I had really committed a crime to come in, even though there was nothing to inform me that they were closed. Her face showed a level of contempt. I left wondering why I subjected myself to that. I left thinking that maybe she had a bad experience with people of color. Then I decided to read reviews to see whether anybody else may have experienced the same. Within 2 minutes, I read at least 2 reviews from people of color who said they had the same experience. One specifically said that he/she was treated badly while others who were not of color were treated well. And he specifically stated the "younger" server had a lot to do with it. I don't know how many servers there are but it was a younger one I spoke with. Piece of advice: Please do not stereotype people. You may have had bad experience but not all people of a particular heritage behave the same. Please give people a chance to prove to you they don't deserve good customer service before you dismiss them. read more

My first visit and I was blown away - I don't think I've ever had staff members - all of them - so sincerely excited I was there and eager to please. It was outstanding! So was the food - from appetizers to pad Thai to sticky mango rice - all were good. The gentleman I assumed was the owner was very careful in checking on the level of "heat" to make sure the food was the right amount of spicy when taking our order - an extra effort that was appreciated. Great neighborhood Thai place! The staff is warm and inviting. If you're fortunate enough to be there on a night Nunu is working, you'll see an owner who really cares. He takes orders, seats guests, buses tables, and tends bar. He has a great attitude that is reflected in the servers. The sundried beef and Thai dumplings appetizers are really good.
