This establishment is where I became a Thai Tea - Holic. It was in the early 2000s when I was still a young guy and tried Thai Iced Tea for the first time that wasn't my Mom's. This place has the closest taste to the Thai Tea I so loved and drank my entire life. If anyone is a Thai Tea expert, I would confidently say it's me, and there is nobody close. Okay with the little Thai tea rant out of the way, the sun dried beef here is great. This place is textbook mid thai food. The ambiance & decor is a bit...shabby. Tables look like they're from the 80s. Random cookware sitting around. 24-packs of Heinekens by the front counter. Despite looking like a table-service restaurant, you don't have a waiter, and must go up to the front to see the menu and order. The Good: The thai iced teas are big, looks like a full pint to me, this is much more than most other thai restaurants, who usually serve it in a much smaller cocktail glass. The fried chives are delicious - great dipping sauce, large portions, crispy outside and tender, chewy inside. The bad: Unfortunately the entrees were extremely underwhelming overall, especially after the stellar chives. Pad Ka-prow (chili thai basil) - not enough sauce. The sauce that's there isn't very flavorful, not enough garlic, not enough thai basil (I saw something like 5 leaves in the whole bowl!). Too many onions, and the onions aren't properly caramelized or charred. Green beans aren't fully cooked. The chicken was tender and juicy though. Drunken Noodle - it's not a saucy dish normally, but this one was bone-dry, much drier than it should be. The vegetables were cut way too chunky, and on top of that it was not an appetizing mix of vegetables. Too many carrots, and the carrots were extremely thick-cut. Way WAY too much cabbage. The food portions are kid-size for the price point. They have no concern in actually serving the customer a meal, rather serving themselves a payment. I ordered spring rolls and they gave them to me half wrapped in aluminum foil so the warmth leaked out immediately. The small container of rice, mixed vegetables and fried egg I ordered was thrown together, not mixed. And the portion size was incredibly small. I will never return as a customer. Yes we have been going there since 2005 food is good menu is busy we stick to few known and tried tested since reluctant to try something new.. behind counter wall there is menu they try to rush you to order so you just order normal fried rice/ drunken noodle to pad Thai etc. Most of them have Thai names not sure how to order or what's in it. So go online research write down what you want and then order. I see ethnic people eating different food and wouldn't be nice to ask what they are eating which looks good. Also tried the chicken pad Thai and the panang curry. I think the pad Thai was a little above average but nothing amazing. The chicken was kind of hard and they didn't give much of it. Not to be confused with Thai Square in Arlington although they appear to be mathematical equivalent (nerd alert) and another personal favorite of mine, when a place is known for a signature dish, I feel like it is one's culinary duty to order said aforementioned dish on their first visit. At Thai by Thai, that dish is the Kai Rabert. Loosely translated as "exploding egg", it's two fried eggs topped with minced chicken and a spicy red chile sauce served over a bed of rice. I imagine Kai Rabert to be a Thai monk in the Kill Bill multiverse whose finishing move is the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique, where upon after finishing said meal, one takes 5 steps out of the restaurant, their heart explodes, and instantly die happy. I was skeptical when a friend recommended it since it sounded so simple, but sometimes those deceptively simple dishes are much more impressive than something loaded with luxurious ingredients. Let's break down what makes this dish so great. The star is the fried eggs, perfectly runny but with the egg white portion with lots of thin fried edges running along its circumference due to a generous amount of oil and high heat. Pro tip if ordering this to go, immediately pre explode your eggs with several good stabbing prior to placing the dish in your car such that the heat from the other ingredients do not further harden the yolks, otherwise you will end up with Kai Regret rather than Kai Rabert. The other half of this dish is the ground chicken with the red chili sauce. It's like an Asian sloppy Joe where the sauce and meat bind together very well with just the right amount of heat, sweetness, and umami that keeps one spooning additional bites with the rice and runny egg. The Thai iced tea is well above average as a refreshing accompaniment whereas the other dishes were fairly unremarkable compared to their signature dish, but perhaps there may be some other hidden gems waiting to be discovered on future visits, but I will be hard pressed to omit the Kai Rabert in my order. read more

Ordered drunken noodles, Bangkok spicy and I have to say I should have done spicy! I went by review but I should have known I could handle more for someone who eats spicy food. The cashier was so sweet and had a lovely personality. Place your number card on the holder at the table. When your order is ready, a kind employee brings the food over to the table. There is no waiter service. Drinks, take out boxes, etc. are within reach. We enjoyed the dishes ordered. Their Panang Chicken and Drunken Noodles were some of our favorites. Their Thai Iced Tea is also wonderfully delicious. I wouldn't say this is my ultimate favorite place to get Thai food but it was still incredibly good. The restaurant was clean and organized. I was jonesing for Thai while shopping; I wasn't familiar with the area, so Google directed me to Thai by Thai. Small and neat, the menu is not expansive, but all the Thai staples are there. I had the dumplings, green curry, and hot jasmine tea. The lady behind the counter was quick, accurate, and mentioned that they'd just turned the hot water urn on, so if my tea wasn't hot enough, to please let her know (spoiler alert: my tea was fine). The dumplings were good. Nothing spectacular, but good solid Thai dumplings, with just enough sauce. The curry was VERY good. Normally these days, it's sugared-up for American tastes, and I have to drown it in salt so that it doesn't taste like candy. Not here! I ordered it extra-spicy, and it was delicious! Not sure why this place has so much hate. This is some of the best Thai food I've had in Northern VA, which is saying a lot. The interior is more like a low-key diner than a fancier sit-down restaurant. We came to pick up a to-go order, and they got everything correct (always nice). FYI: you are not going to get giant portions here. But the food is great. Their "Secret" Street Menu items were wonderful. Can't go wrong on anything there. Keep in mind, we're adventurous eaters though, not pad thai and fried rice people. They have 5 levels of spice, but if you want to actually taste spice, make sure you order it *AT LEAST* a medium. Bangkok spicy and Crazy is where it's at if you want some actual heat though. My husband loves spicy food. I got his stuff medium, and it wasn't spicy enough for him. Honestly one of the best restaurants in all of Sterling. Owner and cashiers are always very nice, and the food is absolutely amazing every time. I am a "spice lover" and have been ordering the highest spice level here on a weekly basis for many months. The chefs do a spectacular job balancing heat and flavor. Personally, I get the pork Ka-Prow fried rice and Woo Sen soups, both spiciest level. I crave them at least once per week! Ive recently started exploring the "street food" menu, which I think is supposed to be more authentic, Thai street food staples. Everything I've had from this restaurant has been to die for! I came to this place with low expectations as it was just for a quick bite to eat but this place blew me away with it's authenticity. Instead of table side service, you place your order up front and pay first. I ordered drunken noodles with beef and I told the staff member I wanted authentic extreme spiciness appropriate for an Asian. The staff member promised me he will inform the kitchen accordingly. He also suggested the pad jungle when I asked for another spicy dish. I ordered it and again asked him to crank up the spiciness to the extreme. When the food finally came, I didn't expect it to be spicy as most restaurants aren't able/willing to provide truly authentic spiciness for their dishes. Both my girl and I dismissed both dishes as non spicy in the first few bites. But soon after, the flavorful spiciness fully kicked in. The level of spiciness was just what we wanted and I was extremely impressed. I liked the pad jungle but it isn't for everybody due to the type of veggies. The drunken beef noodles were delicious although my girl claimed it was a bit salty. While the restaurant is clean, their cups are in need for a new set as it is extremely old.
