I revisited this place after nearly 18 years. I was surprised it was still here but wanted to try it again because I remember that meal being pretty darn good. I actually want to rate this meal 2.5 stars but since I can only give whole stars here, I'm giving the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. I think it can still be pretty good, but not with the dishes we ordered. We came for lunch and ordered off the lunch special menu. That meal comes with the entree, and either a vegetable spring roll and chicken lemon grass soup, or a vegetable spring roll and vegetable lemon grass soup. They offer a third alternative of two spring rolls as well which I think is a pretty nifty option. The two entrees we had were the vegetable tofu drunken noodles and the chicken sweet basil (pad krapow). The spring rolls were fine. Crispy on the outside, cabbage on the inside. The soup was unfulfilling. It tasted a bit like lemongrass soup but it was not tasty. For the entrees, we were able to adjust the spice level: I went for "hot" (3 out of 4 of their scale), while my dining partner went for "medium" (2 out of 4) on the drunken noodles. At most Thai restaurants, these two dishes generally have a similar flavor profile. Here, they do, indeed, have a similar profile between themselves. However, the sauce was quite red. It had a vinegary overtone and possibly some tomato base to it. It did not match the pad krapow flavor profile that I've found at basically every other Thai restaurant I've been to (in the United States and Thailand). It could be this is an authentic version I'm just not familiar with, but I really did not like it. Overall, Thai Luang is a decent place. Perhaps some of the other dishes and curries are good, but there are too many other Thai restaurants in NOVA these days for me to use up a meal coming back here. read more

Thai Luong is so good! If you're looking to veer away from your traditional pad thai and pad see ews, you should definitely try Thai Luong. There are dishes with authentic spices and flavors that'll take you away from "Thai-American" food to authentic Thai food. If anything, you could tell by the portions that it's meant to be family-style so keep that in mind. But overall, the curries and the noodles, and all the proteins are cooked to perfection that it's definitely a place to return to. read more

I've been eating at Thai Luang for 20 years and they have maintained their amazing level of quality and service the entire time! They're famous for their delicious crispy duck - it's literally the best I've ever had. I've tried a few other dishes, all excellent but I find myself ordering the duck most times - you just can't get better! The location is listed as "cozy," which is a good description. The staff is friendly and most have been there for years and recognize their regulars. It can get busy around lunch time, but the service is always prompt and accurate. They have 5 spice levels, 1 (nothing) to 5 (Thai spicy) which is very hot. We recently found out they have a "secret level 6" which I'm pretty sure glows in the dark. Who knew this area would be known for one dish: Crispy Duck noodle soup. I had the pleasure of trying Thai Tada's version and wanted to see how Thai Luang compared. Although their crispy skin got soggier faster, the duck had a bit more flavor from the duck fat. Also, the broth slightly had more flavor than Thai Tada's. Thai Luang's version uses very large wide noodle which was fun to eat with a fork. The prices were about the same and well worth every dollar. In conclusion, which place is better? In fact, since coming here I now live in Chantilly, and I will drive all the way out here because their thai food is the best in northern Virginia hands down. The staff are so friendly, sweet, and when you order to go they make it FAST. My go to items are the Pad Thai, Pad See Ew and the Spicy Basil Fried Rice. I really like spicy food and level 2 and 3 are very spicy! I love when places actually know what "spicy" means. I always get tofu as my protein and they give you plenary!The thai iced tea is also super good. I have never been disappointed with anything I've ordered from here. Heard this place had amazing crispy duck and of course I needed to check it out! Ordered it to go along with some pad Thai and it did not disappoint. The duck was still crispy and hot and had great flavor. Requested some chilies on the side to increase the heat. You can order it according to different heat levels. Although the price was a bit higher than other Thai restaurants, the quantity justified the cost. Although the duck was a tiny tad bit dry, they really nailed the crunchy fried outer layer in ratio to the meat. There's only one reason to come here, but it's a really compelling reason: the crispy duck. The dish's spice level can be customized between 1 to 4. I like to get the level 3 spice (which is already really spicy). If you think you have a decent handle on spice, I'd recommend you try the level 2 first and get the level 3 next time. Delicious, authentic Thai cuisine! This is my go-to Thai place. The food is delicious, and the staff is super friendly. I've tried other Thai places in the area, and nothing quite hits the spot like Thai Luang. My favorites are their crispy duck with thai basil, and their drunken noodles. I usually also order a side of the panang curry sauce to drizzle on whatever I get because it is out of this world amazing. Anything with their crispy duck is delicious though! In the winter I love their duck noodle soup, which is warm and comforting. In the summer, their duck salad is refreshing and light. For lunch, I also like their spicy fried rice. Their dessert is also SO good. Get the coconut ice cream or the mango sticky rice (or both). So delicious. You can customize the spiciness level of your food, and they don't mess around. If you like super spicy food, get "Thai hot" and you'll be pleased, but beware, it is SUPER spicy. If you're feeling less adventurous, ask for their spice tray and you can add spices to fit your palate. The chilis in fish sauce is especially great. I would recommend ordering a Thai iced tea on the side which can help soothe the spiciness. The employees are always super attentive, and treat you like family. I always feel so welcome when we come in. They seem genuinely happy to see you and help with anything you have questions on/any customizations you request. This is my favorite restaurant in Reston, because the food and staff is so inviting and great. I would rate this place 10 out of 5 if I could! read more

My boyfriend and I love their food even though it is always either too spicy or no spiciness at all (for example, if you order mild). We have been frequenting this restaurant for a long time but their poor customer service recently is causing me to write a review. We had a restaurant.com coupon for $5 off and they would not honor it for our takeout order, they said we must dine-in. It does not state anywhere in their terms that it must be used for in-dining only. And like I said, we are pretty regular meaning 3+ times a month. Also, their prices are very high. I'm not a huge Thai food fan but the Beau is and we had been planning on coming here for some time. Finally made it out, and though I was skeptical at first, I may have a new found like for Thai food. I ordered the pad thai w/ chicken, no peanuts. I've never had pad thai but Thai Luang's is GOOD. I really liked the noodles, though the chicken had a sort of a weird clean/seaweed type taste-- hard to describe but didn't taste like normal chicken. I ended up avoiding the chicken for the most part, but the noodles, sauce, bamboo shoots and eggs more than made up for it. The Beau ordered his favourite, crispy duck w/ basil, american style spicy. Out came a plate piled high with HUGE chunks of duck... it IS an expensive dish, but you get your moneys worth. I tried it and found it to have just the right amount of crispiness. However, some pieces were tougher or crispier than others-- almost like I was chewing cartilage. I'm not a duck connoisseur though, so don't take my word about the duck. The only problem I had with the restaurant is that one of the two water glasses on our table had a big fat lipstick mark on it. Ladies, I appreciate lipstick as much as you do.... but if you're going out to dinner at a restaurant that uses the same silverware/glassware/dishes (ie; a nice fancy sit down restaurant), for the love of God, DO NOT WEAR LIPSTICK. Not all automatic dishwashers remove lipstick marks; because restaurant workers simply don't have the time to inspect every glass and are not paid to clean up your make up stains, many glasses come out with lipstick marks on them. Typical red curry. **The pad thai was huge and looked like it was meant to be shared family style. I would come back for the noodles or curry. **The kung pao chicken was really nothing special although the question is why would you ordere this at a Thai restaurant.... **But worst of all was the Thai salad and the wonton soup. The wonton soup tasted like salty water, and I used this to wash down the even saltier Thai Salad. Why did I pick the 2 worst things?! I've been here before a few times, and it's a pretty reliable place to get decent Thai food. Setting isn't anything special, and it's pretty empty on weeknights. Pricing is fair, portions are big + shareable, service is fast. I got the green curry w/ beef, which was quite good. I may be a wimp because of this, but I was sweating as soon as I started eating it. It's advertised as mildly spicy, though, so I wish it was a little more clear. My dad got the sweet basil with squid, which he got American spicy, and apparently it wasn't very spicy. The sauce didn't really get into the squid, and it was a little chewy, so I would probably stick to something a little more traditional. Overall definitely not bad, would come again. Excellent food and service....Will be back again.... We we there, me and some other office colleagues for Lunch at this restaurant on a Friday around 11.45 or so. We got seated immediately. Nice ambiance and tastefully decorated with Thai motifs. The staff were dressed in Thai clothing as well, very nice! I should have ordered the two Veggie rolls instead or Lemon Grass soup and one veggie roll. Forgot that fish sauce will be used in the soup. Anyway, enjoyed the roll. I got the Panang curry with Tofu. Should have ordered the Panang curry with the Vegetables option, since Tofu was the only thing in the panang curry. It was delicious and hot (I asked for American Hot which was one pepper less than the Thai Hot! - Interesting). The highlight was the bottom less Thai Iced coffee that soothed the heat from the Panang Curry. Make sure you get Iced Coffee or Tea. It helps a lot. Enjoyed the lunch very much. This week I was in Reston,VA for my first business trip in 28 months and had remembered going here previously, but forgot whether I liked the restaurant or not. So I gave it a try again with a fellow team member. Overall, better than average overall rating, which makes me want to give it 3.5 stars, but I don't think fractional stars are possible on Yelp. So in the spirit of rounding up and being positive, I will rate this restaurant a 4 star. I had the Sweet Basil Chicken and my dining partner had Shredded Ginger Chicken. Both hit the mark at 3.5 stars. The Sweet Basil was #2 spicy which seemed like it should have been called level 3 of 4,but very tasty. The surprise of the night was the Sweet Sticky Rice & Mango my dining partner introduced me to. While I thought it very tasty, my partner said the rice was not the right texture ( too hard). What I remembered about this restaurant last time I was here, and this time, is that there never have been more than 2 or 3 other tables occupied when I was there at ~6:30 on a week night. So perhaps this is a great secret in the area : fast service, good prices and good food. I will definitely be back and suggest you check it out. read more
