After a horrific experience at one of the new, high end restaurants in Hamilton, causing us to walk out, we decided to hit 2nd Street Sushi (which has been pretty good in the last few years). We were seated immediately and Emma promptly took our orders and gave us tremendous service. Sushi was AWESOME and our entire meal cost less than 1/4 of what it would have been at the place we walked out of...and with more food! Please double check your bill. Even if the waiter tells you your beer is on the house. Also, what the wine prices are as they are extremely expensive and aren't advertised on the menu. Also, check the prices on the options the waiter gives you. We were charged extra for rice and charged extra for one of the noodle options the waiter suggested. None of these charges were disclosed by the waiter. Food was good, but took 30 minutes to be served for four meals on a slow evening. Too bad. read more

I think I am dying! Been very gassy and sour burps for 11 hours now since I ate some horrible bad pork egg rolls last night. They over seasoned the old pork with onion salt and garlic salt to cover up the fact that the pork had gotten rancid. Blah! Sushi in MT is not something I would think to be very good but this place was better than I expected. The sushi itself was good, however it was half the size I'm used to in AK. Maybe that's not fair but it is what it is. Prices are the same for half the amount. I left hungry and had to go get something else to eat after which wasn't awesome. Let me begin by saying I do NOT subscribe to the belief that the customer is always right. Now for my story... I went here with my husband and two brothers for lunch after it was recommended to us by our cousin. I'm pregnant, so I didn't expect to be able to order much from the menu, but most sushi restaurants I've been to before has other entree options besides sushi, as well as at least a few options with of rolls with cooked fish. When we looked at the menu I was pretty disappointed to see that most of the rolls were priced higher than I'm used to (between 15-20$ for 8 pieces of sushi), and the non-sushi entrees were between $20-30 a plate. So, I decided to try to get the spicy seared tuna roll because it was only $7 and when I asked the waitress if it was cooked she said "yes." Additionally, I told her I wanted to make sure it's cooked because I'm pregnant and can't eat uncooked fish. She assured me it was. Fast forward to our food arriving: I noticed that it was not in fact cooked, and asked if it could be removed from our bill as I could not eat it. I did not know that "seared" only means gently cooked on the outside and raw through the center, which apparently is my fault even though I tried to verify with the waitress that it was in fact fully cooked. The waitress said it could not be removed because it "had already been served to the table," and suggested I take it up with the manager. This is when things really spiraled because the manager came out and proceeded to grill me (no pun intended) about why I didn't already know that seared meant lightly cooked and raw in the middle. To which I responded that I wasn't sure what it meant and that's why I tried to make sure by communicating my need for cooked fish to the waitress when I ordered. This manager was ready to continue to argue with me about the issue, and I was probably two hours past having needed to eat something, so when I realized he was going to dig in his heels and continue to berate me for ordering the wrong thing, I said "I am too hungry, so I can't do this." Then I got up and walked out of the restaurant and proceeded to walk two blocks while having a complete emotional meltdown from being too hungry and frustrated. I probably wailed out loud for about 10 minutes while my party finished their disappointing sushi (it looked worse than any sushi I've ever seen - even from the grocery store!). In summary: The customer is not always right, but when the customer asks the waitress for verification that something is cooked and then receives food she can't even eat, take the frickin sushi roll off the bill and move on rather than making a starving pregnant woman cry and leave. TL;dr HORRIBLE customer service. Nasty, run-down interior. HORRIBLE sushi! RIDICULOUS prices...Someone please save Hamilton from this awful restaurant by opening an actual sushi restaurant with reasonable prices, good food, and friendly, knowledgeable staff. I think they struggled a bit coming out of lock down, but they're getting their legs under them again! I've never been disappointed, the service was amazing, everything was delicious. I have a disability that makes walking tough, and they're always SO NICE and bring it out to my car when I'm picking up. Support your local restaurants!! Especially this one! We need it! The service was not good... I ordered a Shrimp and vegetable Tempura dinner. The waitress did not hear me correctly and had to put my order in again. I had to sit there and wait while my friend was eating. She offered him fried rice or white rice, didn't ask me that and brought him Miso soup and a cucumber salad before his entree. She did none of this for my entree order...the tempura batter was thick, doughy and very greasy. It was NOT Tempura batter!!! This isn't just the best sushi in Montana. It clearly is that. The only close alternative would be one of the three places in Missoula which all have good items or good deals, but this is different. No, this is one of the best sushi places in the entire Northwest. I'm sure there are maybe a couple better (but more expensive) in Seattle, so either eat there or keep driving another 8 hours. Favorites include the Shrimp Wonton, Maui, and traditional Rock'n'Roll. Noodle and Rice bowls look good for that one Neanderthal you know who won't eat "raw fish" :D read more

Only place in Hamilton to get sushi & it's quite good, who would of guessed there's a legit sushi restaurant in town? I'm told their fresh fish comes in from their Seattle distributor and you get more than the usual types of fish if you order their nigiri combo "Montana". Most people tend to opt for their maki rolls which are the usual rolls drizzled in sauce, topped with various pieces of fish & tempura. These are alright if you're not accustomed to eating sushi. I personally prefer getting whatever fresh nigiri they have on hand and that's allowed me to try different types of salmon on occasion. Skip the hot kitchen food like the pork fried rice, they tend to be a bit bland. Friendly service, things do get a bit slow when they're overwhelmed since there's no more than two chefs working at a time. FYI, Hamilton doesn't have a lot of dining options on Monday, Tuesdays but 2nd St Sushi is open everyday but Sunday compared to the rest of town. A small complaint would be the way the slices of fish are cut for nigiri, it's kind of haphazard at times and the rice portions are a bit large or stale. Coming from the Bay Area, this would be an average sushi restaurant at best but being able to eat fresh sushi in the middle of nowhere is better than nothing! read more

Big avid sushi fan and have enjoyed sushi from around the world, I have been eager as a local for that one sushi place to change the narrative about Montana sushi. Have heard great things from locals about Second St Sushi so we made the drive. The outside is very unimpressive of what you'll be greeted with inside. Greatly enjoyed our experience, the staff from the hostess to the sushi chefs were incredibly welcoming and kind. Had wonderful conversations and made some friends along the way. The fish tasted fantastic, it was absolutely fresh and sourced well. Portion sizes were healthy. I am accustomed to more of a narrow yet thick cut of sashimi, 2nd provided a wide yet thin cut which was new to me. The fish was fantastic. All of their rolls were wonderful, although they are "loose" rolls and no consistency with the cuts. My one complaint would be the rice, it felt old and cold. But I watched the chef pull rice from the cooker to make my nigiri and it tasted dry and a bit crispy. Feels they need to invest in a better rice cooker and add more rice vinegar and sugar. Keep the rice a bit warm and this place would be put on the map as a top sushi place in MT! read more

My family and I were dying for some sushi. We've eaten a lot of sushi and by far this was the worst sushi I have ever eaten. The sad part was we waited for probably 30-40 minutes before we got our food and when they put it in front of me I was so disappointed. I really wish I had a picture for you. One of the rolls I got, the fish was cut so thin, it was transparent. The other roll was the size of a quarter and the last roll not sure what it was but it was the size of a dime. Very disappointing. The poor waitress was by her self running around, seating people, answering the phone, helping with take out orders, being the cashier and trying to take care of all the people at the tables. The sushi chef not to friendly either. The inside is run down, nasty carpet etc.... Which I would say whatever if I had a great experience here. I really hate leaving bad reviews, but this place deserves one. Sorry. read more

Have I had better sushi? Yes, but this is a great sushi place for a small town! Highly recommended. I usually go in for lunch and get the Coast Combo (comes with 5 pieces of nigiri, a tuna roll, miso soup and a cucumber salad) for about $12. They also have spicy soy edamame that is delicious. Service time is decent. Waitresses are nice and friendly. Restaurant is clean. Only downside is if you pay by credit or debit card there is a service fee. read more

Thank god! Decent sushi in the Bitterroot! Is it the best I've had? No. Is it good? Yes. The service was slow and we did have to wait for our food a bit longer than we should have. Once the sushi arrived it was good. They have a sushi bar but don't operate it like a typical sushi bar where you are interacting with the sushi chefs and they are making you special delights and sharing sake with you. Instead they never speak to you and you get to watch them rushing around trying to keep up with the orders. The person who seemed to be the main chef for the evening was not a happy camper and seemed unhappy with his colleagues. So I think they are missing the sushi bar concept. All this said, I am thanking my lucky stars that this place reopened and I can get some decent, not fantabulous but decent, sushi. I will be frequenting this place for sure. read more

Don't recommend this place. This place doesn't have the best customer service. Waitress miss heard my order. She only took one of them. She also told my pregnant wife that her choice was cooked but came out half cooked. The waitress should have stated it was half cooked. Anyone ever have a review that starts, I wanted this place to be better but it just wasn't? Talking to a couple people that live in Missoula and Hamilton tell me that this is the best place to have sushi. I do believe that geography does not impact the quality of the product that is being served. Walking in and seeing two white guys, in their early 20's at best, I was a little suspicious. There were several groups eating there, so I thought that maybe I was profiling. The work behind the counter was especially slow. It took more than 20 minutes to make a rainbow roll, two spicy tuna hand rolls, and an order of salmon sashimi. My major complaint is not the price, though it is very expensive, but the quality of the food that was served. I know that the fish is probably frozen when it arrives to them, but it tasted recently thawed. It tasted watery and without any flavor. Like a good steak that 'ages' there was no aging of the fish that was served. It was so bad that I did not even eat the other half of what I ordered. The rainbow roll's inside was to be a California roll. However there was a stick of imitation crab, a non peeled cucumber, and a not so ripe avocado. There was no creaminess to the roll. I am sorry, but I believe the people that trained these two guys behind the counter has never experienced good sushi or good food for that mater. What did I learn today? Trust your gut when it comes to profiling your chef. read more
