Tried this place on a whim while visiting my daughter. She knew of it and we wanted something different. Called ahead and made a reservation it was a Saturday night. Arrived at the scheduled time and were seated promptly. The place is small and just a smattering of tables no real restaurant decor, but I've found this to be true in many good sushi places. Our service started out pretty slow took a good 15 minutes to see a server pay us any attention. But once she came she was attentive. We had edamame for an appetizer and miso soup. Both were very tasty. Edamame has the perfect amount of salt and miso was rich and delicious. We ordered 3 different rolls as we were a party of 3 and kind of shared a piece of each. My grandson had a fancier roll (sorry I forgot the name) but it had smoked salmon and came with a hot honey mustard dipping sauce. It was very good. The rolls my daughter and I chose were GF although I am not GF restricted but it was a choice I wanted. All of it tasted fresh and tasty. We all left with full belly's. We were going to try the banana's tempura but decided we were too full and they were busy and service was a tad slow. But well worth the wait. We'll definitely be back. read more

I will start off by saying the dish I had was fantastic. My friend and I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen and shrimp and vegetable tempura. The tempura was battered perfectly, salted just right, dipped in the ponzu was simply delicious. The location is very convient downtown, and inside was small and cozy. We waited over an hour for the 2 mediocre special rolls to come out. They are working out problems as they establish themselves in the new location and look after staffing issues. Will not return. My husband, stepson, and grandson did some kind of tuna rolls that they raved about. I've done the tempura in the past and it was great. I've never written a review, but we were so frustrated I felt like this one was warranted. We came in an hour and a half before close. Despite the restaurant being half empty, we waited almost an hour without being given any opportunity to order. During this time we were the only customers to come in. The other patrons had all already been there and been served, and those customers ordered more food and were served again while we were waiting. Wouldn't have minded waiting a long time for our food, but not even being given a chance to order drinks after an hour was ridiculous. We left before ordering. I have worked in food service previously and understand that things can get complicated and busy and usually don't mind a long wait, but having multiple servers walk by, look at us, and ignore us was incredibly frustrating. read more

I went on $1.50 Monday it wasn't worth the $1.50 per item you got 2 little pieces of beef for the beef teriyaki and 3 pieces for the sushi roll and there wasn't to much sushi in them maybe the normal rolls are better. They had a big selection of saki that might make the food better read more

We were super surprised to see the 3 stars on Yelp after eating at Sushi Hana last night. We came to town for NYE and were lucky to get a last minute reservation. We ordered the special December Amber, Carburetor, Hard Rock and Roll, Hot Moon, Asian Sunrise, spicy tuna, and various nigiri. Every single roll was super delicious, not too much sauce but tons of flavor. The spicy rolls had the perfect kick and we left super happy and full. The service and ambiance at the restaurant is generally good. I've eaten there regularly for at least a decade. I think the food quality is starting to fall off. I've been served luke warm miso soup and ramen in a dashi broth completely lacking in flavor. I've gotten snow peas that haven't been stemmed and cucumbers that are past their prime. I expect a Japanese restaurant to be excellent at these details. The sushi itself still seems reliable and the restaurant is often a calm, quiet place to be. The sesame chicken still seems perfectly fried. It's been a while since I've had the agedashi tofu but I hope that would still be good. read more

This review is mainly about ramen. If you ignore the ramen on the menu, and instead stick to the sushi, you'll find this to be about as good a sushi place as you would expect in a state without an ocean (just okay, but pretty good for Missoula). Anyway, let's talk ramen. I've tried the ramen at Sushi Hana several times over the last few years, mainly because beggars can't be choosers, and there is literally no good ramen in Missoula. Every time I go back to try again, I always hope the ramen will be a little better than last time, but unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. The main weakness here is the noodles, which are mushy, with an unpleasant texture. The noodles single-handedly prevent the ramen from reaching its potential, no matter which bowl you order. That's a shame, because both the miso butter ramen and the tonkotsu ramen are otherwise flavorful. It's kind of unusual that they throw a few snap peas into each bowl, but putting that aside, most of the pieces of the ramen puzzle are present. You get half an egg, a bit of seaweed, and some pork, along with some tasty broth... but those noodles! It's not quite there, but I certainly hope they keep trying. It's a nice little restaurant with very friendly staff and good atmosphere. But for now, stick to the sushi. If you must have ramen, Nudo Ramen is just a three hour drive away in Spokane! read more

FAVORITE SERVERS A couple of my latest reviews have included mention of our favorite servers. For years, our favorite server at Sushi Hana was Barry. We still love him, but he moved to management, so he doesn't qualify for "Favorite Server". But, along came Cooper. The first time we met at our table, he said his name was Cooper. I said, "Oh, like in a barrel maker." He laughed, and a great, hilarious relationship began. Cooper is great! He doesn't mind our off-beat conversation, ranging from using a ceramic grill to cook a turkey to haircuts to the difference between calculus and trigonometry. And, if he doesn't know something about the food or ingredients, he will find out. But, he deferred on a question about calculus. This evening, we learned that Kobe beef is a subset of Wagu beef. One suggestion: provide hiragana charts for kids to identify the characters in the signs on the walls. This evening I figured out that the character for "a (pronounced like a in amen" does not show up on the wall, but "i (pronounced like a Spanish i)" does. read more

We sat and the waitress took our drink orders and noticed that the waitress became preoccupied with speaking to a customer for 15+ mins. Several other customers came up and asked for checks while the waitress ignored them. The managements lack of awareness will be the end of Sushi Hana. Skip this place and go else where.. read more

I have been going to Sushi Hana now for 4 years since moving to Missoula. It was the first place my wife and I tried after moving here and we loved it. Tonight however, was very different. Both the service and food were terrible. All of the sushi rolls either lacked flavor, had over cooked elements, or just tasted bad all together. And then when our waitress asked how our food was, to which we replied not good, she then asked if we wanted more drinks and walked away. Super disappointed with this place and our $70 dinner. At the checkout process another waiter asked how things were and he was super apologetic which we appreciated, but they did nothing to remedy the situation. Hope this place turns around. read more

In the past few months I've been back twice and the quality has gone away. Gave it the 2nd try after the first disappointing visit figuring that maybe it was just an off night, but nothing improved. The nigiri are about 1/3 the size of a standard piece of sushi and you need a magnifying glass to find any fish in these rolls. Pretty good sushi and Japanese cuisine in a humble setting. I came here with a big group - about 30 or more. I don't think they were quite ready for us, because the food came out really slow and the waitresses seemed overwhelmed while getting our drink orders. However, they were always really nice and courteous, When the food came out, I really liked the selections of sushi and the vegetable/shrimp tempura was excellent. It was served with this dip that you really have to try... on anything. While waiting for our next plate, we rolled the dip in our rice and ate that right up. The building itself is pretty basic, and there's a long trippy hallway to the bathroom. I could see myself stopping in here again on a trip to Missoula! read more

This was without a doubt the worst sushi I've had in a restaurant in a decade. Most supermarket sushi is even better than this. The age-dashi tofu was the only food thing that I ate here (presumably because it doesn't require fresh fish). The salmon sashimi was thin and ugly with zero marbling. It looked like a garnish. The Philadelphia Roll had about 3 slices of english cucumber in it while the salmon, which was smoked (didn't worse smoked), was 1/2 the collective size of the cucumber. They got the cream cheese right, I think... I also had the Rock Star which wasn't very good. I realize that I'm in Missoula but I expect that the sushi would at least be better than what you would find in the supermarket in Seattle. read more

We were sat immediately at our reservation time. Our order was taken when we were all ready. Then we waited over an hour while we watched several tables be seated after us, eat and leave before we even got our food. At no point did anyone check on us after our order was taken. We kept having to flag people down for drinks and silverware and dishware. All who seemed irritated to be dealing with customers but were quick to respond when they did answer our requests. Then we ordered 2 ice cream for the birthday girl and her friend and waited another 20 minutes for it to be brought to us. We asked how much longer the ice cream would take and he said "I'll go scoop it right now". So they just didn't do their jobs when ordered the first time. A 45 minute dining experience turned into several hours with half rolled sushi that was falling apart and a BOH staff that seemed like they were unable to do the basics of their jobs. Not only will I not be returning, I will be actively telling people not to go here when they ask for sushi recommendations. read more

I have visited Sushi Hana twice. Both times I am alone (I like to eat alone ... don't judge) and both times I have felt fairly ignored by the servers here. Last night I sat for nearly 10 minutes waiting to submit a drink order. The hostess eventually noticed my discomfort and saved me. Food after that was prompt but I never regained a warm and fuzzy feeling. Overall, sushi is yummy. I enjoyed the ahi crisps a lot. And the fish seems fresh and the menu has a good traditional and unique choices. I'm sure I'll go back. Probably by myself. And I'll bring a book next time. read more
