My first reaction when my friends wanted to take me to sushi in Montana? Hell. No. They swore the fish was brought in fresh daily from Seattle, so I decided to give it a whirl. I was very pleasantly surprised! The sushi was GREAT! And the service was also very warm and friendly. The menu has a lovely selection (I was the only person who got raw fish - hmph! - but the rest of my party had a wide variety of menu items and they all were delicious.) Like many of my fellow reviewers I traveled to Hamilton from Missoula specifically because I heard the tales of amazing sushi in Montana. The restaurant is clean and lovely. I could tell the ingredients were fresh which is a great feat considering we're no where near an ocean. Sadly the sushi rolls were just average. I think my hopes were clouded by so many people saying that this was the best sushi in the State. I made the mistake of thinking this would compare to restaurants I've eaten at in larger cities. I recently located to Montana from L.A. last year and have been hesitant to try any sushi place considering we're nowhere near the ocean. However, I came across an article, in the Ravalli Republic, which mentioned that 2nd Street Sushi had "made the list of the Top 100 Asian Restaurants in 2011 by MenuAsian.com, an Asian dining website dedicated to evaluating restaurants all over the world." I decided this would be a perfect place to try for my birthday. I was not disappointed. It was as good as if not better than my favorite restaurants in L.A. Believe me I've eaten at some stinkers too. I started off with the yellowtail sashimi which was so delicious and tender that I placed an additional order for it. For my next roll, unfortunately, they did not have scallops on this day which is one of my favorites. However, they did substitute salmon for the scallops which I also find delicious. The roll was quite spicy and exploding with flavors. It was agreed that it was worth the 2 hour drive and we will definitely be making the trip again! read more

Quaint location- drove by a couple of times before I saw it. Sushi bar inside with several tables. Food was delicious and service was great. The sushi combos come with soup and a fresh, fruity cucumber salad. Sounds odd, but it was a lovely combo- strawberries, raspberries and pomegranate seeds. Great prices. This is an excellent sushi bar, and I was pleasantly suprised to see the prices were reasonable as well! I loved the shrimp wanton sushi roll, and combined with a couple pieces of tempura and a cup of soup, I found myself very full which hardly ever happens eating sushi. From the outside it looks like a dull boring place, but as soon as you step through the door you're met with a warm atmosphere with a mirror along the wall that makes it look bigger than it actually is inside. I ordered a spicy roll, although very delicious I was a bit disappointed in it's size, I would have ordered more had I known it was so small. I had also tried some of the Chicken and Beef Noddles people from my party had ordered, and it was very good. It came with big pieces of chicken, a lot of noodles that were chewy in texture and had a sweet and savory teriyaki sauce, and plenty of fresh vegetables. I also had some miso soup which was excellent, my only complaint is that there wasn't enough tofu. If you are a picky eater than this place is not for you, but if you're adventurous you'll find there's plenty of things on the menu. The food is very fresh and is flown in daily, it comes from the ocean, straight to a plane, to the restaurant. There is everything from Eel, to Octopus, and Cuttlefish. The crab was over cooked and greasy in comparison to my favorites. But had a nice combination of flavors. Staying in Hamilton, MT a week for work? Not that exciting. Hamilton is a small town about 45 minutes south of Missoula. One of those "middle of nowhere but extremely pretty " places smack-dab in the beautiful Bitterroot valley. I'm a sucker for local cuisine when I travel, and tonight I visited 2nd Street Sushi & Asian Grill. Not the most exciting name, mind you, but perhaps the best chicken Teriyaki I've ever had (never had sushi, probably never will). It's a smaller joint. Off the beaten path in an almost all-residential/apartment complex neighborhood. It's rather classy. Locally owned. And offers amazing service. I will definitely visit them again when in town. read more

BEST SUSHI I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. I was born and raised in Hamilton and always came here for sushi with my friends. I even drive down from Missoula to get sushi here, because NO one in Missoula can beat it. i've tried practically every roll they offer along with experimental ones the chefs make for me and they always taste wonderful. the cucumber salad is great too, never had anything else they offer though, i just wanted the sushi. inside is smaller and not anything super fancy but it's a calming and comforting atmosphere. read more

Awesome Sushi, very fresh with a huge array of choices. There's a group of us that come here once a month for lunch and we always, always leave stuffed and saying to each other just how fabulous everything was. The egg rolls and pot stickers are a great way to start the meal. Followed by the cucumber salad, which is always topped with fresh fruits. It is light and sweet, which leaves room for the sushi rolls. We always order one more roll than there are people so there is plenty to eat. The rolls are displayed on a large platter and we just dig in a share. There are never any left overs. You can't go wrong eating here, even if you don't like Sushi, because their noodle and rice bowls are also outstanding. Small and quaint inside, nothing fancy, but very clean and well maintained. Great addition to local food scene. 2nd Street has come thru year after year. Their fish is very fresh, the presentation is good. They can get a bit overwhelmed on busy nites but they do their best to accommodate. Their rolls are excellent and the menu a bit inventive, especially for MT. As a consultant, I travel for a living. I eat sushi regularly in Chicago, NY, Mpls, Dallas, LA, etc. This is some of the better sushi out there at bargain prices and consistently good. It would be a highly rated restaurant in any town, but is a standout for Montana. Warning: management and top sushi chef have recently changed. No telling how it will impact, but the original team was great, friendly and into the highest quality. We will have to wait and see. read more

Decided to try, walked in stood there, had 4 different people make eye contact with me, yet no offered to take my name or tell me of a wait time, or acknowledge my presence and 2 employees walked right past me. It was reasonably busy, there were people waiting and they had empty tables. I will give them a second chance and will hopefully be able to give a better review. Waited 35 minutes for food. Others sat down 20 minutes after us and food was served to them in 10 min..ask waitress where order was, said "its coming up" 5 min later, got our food. Obviously they forgot or misplaced our order..just own up to it. Ordered sashimi. Had 3 paper thin pieces of fake atlantic salmon..ugh..and 2 slivers of tuna..the rest was all bass, rockfish or some other cheap whitefish..total amount of fish was less than quarter cup..on bed of cold dry rice..that was $28 dollars..never again..first impressions are important and both wife and I were not impressed. read more

The only game in town and he know's it! It's so disappointing, being a regular for the past 6+ years to see the lack of concern coming from the owner for the people coming in to have a nice meal "Together". The key word here is together. Since covid, service has been so slow when you dine in... I've realized why tonight. The employees are instructed by the owner to put Togo orders ahead of the dine in patrons! The last 4 times we've eaten in, it has been up to two hours simply waiting on our food. Tonight did it for us, once again I arrived 40 minutes earlier than my husband, ordered and had the salad, my husband arrived and shortly after 1 appetizer arrived, I ordered 2, then we waited another 30 minutes! All the while the poor waitresses are apologizing and making excuses as to why our food hasn't arrived. Finally my husbands order from the kitchen comes out and I'm told it will be a little longer on my 1 sushi roll and the other appetizer. SERIOUSLY???? My husband was fuming! He didn't want to eat alone while I waited on my order. I heard another customer complain about waiting almost two hours for food but watching the staff answer phone calls for Togo orders and putting them ahead of the dine in orders! I suggested to my husband we just share his meal and cancel the other orders. I mentioned that to the waitress and she said she'd tell "him".....she returned and said "he said your meal is ready, do you want to take it to go?" Was he actually offering the my roll and second appetizer on the house for such an inconvenience to us??? I asked the waitress she said she'd ask but never returned...........We paid our bill and left. As I said Second Street Sushi is the only game in town and he knows it! If you've got a few hours to kill and don't mind watching other people at your table take turns eating then this is the restaurant for you!! I sure hope this gets straightened out and they appreciate the people dining in as much as they do the to go orders............. read more

I've been dying to try this place and on my birthday, I gathered 15 of my friends and made the trek from Missoula to Hamilton to try this place. We were seated in the back room for larger parties and they began serving us. The menu had a good mix of pre made dishes and sushi rolls. On this particular night, I gave the tempura and firecracker roll a shot. It was well worth it and both were well prepared and tasted very good. I polled my friends and they all had positive reviews of the place. I want to come back with a smaller group and really enjoy the restaurant a little more. Wasn't expecting to find a good Asian place in Hamilton. Other than being a bit pricey, it was really nice. It is a bit fancy and I had the chicken teriyaki, which rather than being the typical kind you find in WA, was instead served with lots of vegetables and larger pieces of chicken which more resembled their original shape. I went for lunch and had leftovers for dinner as well, so it was an okay value. The gyoza appetizer (though I can't remember now if they called them potstickers, you get the point), was delicious as well. read more

After a year of waiting for it to re-open, I went in two weeks after they opened for dinner. I am extremely disappointed! They need NEW waitresses. We have been sitting here for over an hour waiting for food. The waitress says that our egg rolls aren't out yet because the kitchen is taking an hour for fried food. Seriously? I'm not happy obviously but I am not rude. When she walks away she rolls her eyes. Then comes back 10 minutes later to tell me the "kitchen" forgot my egg rolls! 15 minutes later, our food arrives! My wife and I got out of Missoula for the weekend and stopped in at 2nd Street Sushi for dinner on a Saturday night. We were surprised to find it quite busy, though it was pretty early in the evening. We were given an option of waiting 20 minutes or sitting at the bar. We went with the bar. The atmosphere is classy yet relaxed, with tasteful decor and a nice setup that makes the relatively narrow space seem more open and less crowded. Though the place was packed and the staff seemed a little frazzled, our waitress was very attentive and nice. We ordered a couple rolls each, as well as the seaweed salad and warm sake. The salads were larger than we've had at other sushi places, but they were lacking in flavor. The same went for the rolls, though the Tiger Roll was very good. The plum sake was great, also. I would go back to 2nd Street Sushi based on the service and the atmosphere. I was underwhelmed with the food (other than the Tiger roll), but I would try other options on the menu next time. Also, consider making a reservation on a Saturday night unless you don't mind waiting. A pretty good experience in general. read more

I eat here every year when visiting relatives in Montana. Think I will pass next year. Sushi is fair, but hey, not much to choose from in the middle of nowhere. My main complaint is the service, and the long wait for food. Went on a Monday night and place was less than half full, and it is a tiny place. Took over an hour to get our food, and that was after constantly asking waitress where it was. We have always joked about the long wait here, but this was ridiculous. Server was nice enough to take off a few of our drinks. If you absolutely have to have sushi while in Hamilton, go here and get your fix. If not, wait until you get home. read more

Service charge for Credit Card unacceptable. Not explained ahead of time, just charged and one has to deal with it. Had we been told ahead of time, could've paid cash, although probably would've still charged but at least knowing would've taken that surprise out of it. Ridiculous. I loved this place and have been to it countless times but the last two times I've been here it's been extremely slow with poor service. When told the roll was going bad and smelled really fishy the waitress said it normal and was just fine per the chef. In their defense they did take it off my bill. Being from California I've experienced a lot of great (and terrible) sushi. For being in a smaller mountain town this place is pretty damn good. The one thing I wish they (and most places) have is Ikura, but that's quite alright because it's more of a novelty item anyway :P this place has definitely saved me from my sushi withdrawals I've been having being away from home for so long! read more

We weren't in a hurry which was a good thing. Wait time for a table wasn't too bad, about 25 minutes. Another couple wanted to sit at the bar and waited for an hour and a half. Took a while for the waitress to take our order. Took over an hour to get our dinner and we had finished our meal before our sushi came out. Our waitress disappeared after taking our order and only reappeared to deliver our food. Had to ask for service from the other waitress several times. On the up side the food was really good. Total time in the restaurant was almost 2 1/2 hours. My biggest pet peeve is bad customer service so I probably won't go back unless I hear they've trained their staff and improved their service tremendously. read more

The two of us only ordered 2 rolls apiece but when our partial order was delivered, she didn't even tell us which 3 they were.
