If you DON'T want authentic Japanese prepared sushi or sashimi, this is the place for you. (Really tried to like this place but was disappointed on all 3 visits). The focus here is on the rolls ( which are dumbed down for American tastes and gloppy) and if you don't care about a lot of filler and don't mind paying high prices, this is your place. Portions are small, fish is often not fresh and rolls are filled with lots of filler instead of fish. Service is terrible if you can get them to wait on you at all. It's not an authentic Japanese restaurant/experience. The nigiri and sashimi pieces are small for the prices they charge and the rice is hard and not flavored properly. Their prices are too high and they are trying to do too much. Genuine Japanese food is super fresh and kept simple. The ambiance is far too noisy! If you want the real deal for excellence in fresh fish, service and ambiance, try Hana (it used to be Sushi Hana). And no, I'm not one of Hana's employees....they are just doing everything right, are Japanese owned and operated, their fish is flown in daily from Japan and they have a fabulous wait staff that often remembers their customer's names! So many creative menu items to choose from it was hard to decide, and i did enjoy the appetizer (bao bun) and sushi roll (clockwork orange) that i ordered. The price however is unreasonably high for such small portion sizes, and that would be the only reason i would not return. Chicken dish was severely overcooked. You could tell how burnt and horribly done it was just by the visual look while serving it. It honestly tasted like popcorn chicken that was air fried three different times--hardly edible. Miso soup was not miso soup-it was their own version of miso soup. It was very thick, full of ingredients. Cucumber salad is almost impossible to mess up. It was also unpleasant. This place is WAY overpriced for the quality. I would never come back, nor would anyone at my table. The tea that we ordered was even weird. It was their own version again like the miso soup. The ambience was nice. Was looking for a place to celebrate my birthday and decided on this one. I don't live in Montana so we got the recommendation from a local. Being from NY, I was not expecting to be wowed by the food here in Missoula so I had absolutely no expectations. The restaurant itself was absolutely beautiful, our waiter was awesome, he put up a lot from all of us and took it like a champ! There were tons of drinks, I got hot sake and it was delicious. We also got Blantons and were hell bent on finishing the bottle so that we could keep the horse top. The waiter brought the bottle, few glasses and we achieved our goal! As far as the food, the Missoula restaurants all loved it. Us people from NY, thought it was ok. I had vegetable tempura, which I really liked, 2 pieces of tamago (it was called something else on the menu) and a salmon skin hand roll. I've been to Saketome 10+ times and always had a great experience, but tonight was IMMACULATE. Never written a yelp review but had to shoutout the sushi chefs. Daria and Conner made absolutely incredible special rolls for us with a shellfish allergy in the group and they were quite possibly in the top 10 rolls I've ever had and sushi has been my favorite food since I was 8 years old (20 years now). Well quite a disappointment compared to our last visit a few years ago. Overall the rolls were smaller and quite expensive. service was fine. Miso was good with onions and shrooms but not as many as before. The scallop appetizer was delicious but very small and expensive. The rolls: DT aftermath wasn't on the menu anymore but they made it for us and it was unimpressive. Zootown and clockwork orange were good but undersized and overpriced. Tai won on not good and small. Blossom roll was awesome (hence the 3* instead of 2). The combo of pickled apple, tuna, thai basil, lime juice was delicious. Spend your money elsewhere, the service is non-existent and the food, meh. The place was not busy and I sat at the bar which made four total at the bar. It took a bit to be greeted by the bartender to get water and a beer. As I waited to order, I noticed the bartender never interacted or checked with the gentleman to my right, but was spending all of her time with the couple on my other side. I contemplated leaving and I should have followed my instincts. A while later the bartender took my order and that was the last time she interacted with me or looked in my direction until I put my card down to pay. She never asked if I wanted another beer or even a refill of water. I had to flag down another server to ask for wasabi, ginger, and ponzu. In the meantime, another couple sat at the end of the bar and received the same amount of attention, zero. Once she handed me the check she noticed and inquired if I had received all of my food. Wow! I've been here a handful of times but we had the most incredible meal tonight. The shrimp and pork gyoza, shrimp tempura and the massive attack roll were superb. I'm a hard "no" on the maguro tataki roll but could just be preference. However, our server, Jasmine, was freaking amazing! She was so kind to our daughter and attentive throughout the entire meal. Extensive drinks list, quite a varied menu and definitely something that you need to check out with a group. The sumo bowl is about 20% larger than the regular bowl and I recommend the sumo bowl if you plan on sharing a little bit with the folks at your table. Any big group should probably try at least two or three different appetizers and one or two different ramen bowls. Vice versa just make sure everybody shares because it's just that good. Also the staff was very accommodating with our large group and we're super friendly and the food came out relatively quick considering we had more than 20 people with our group. Well done read more

I normally go to Kobe for my sushi, but I've heard multiple raves for Saketome. Thought we'd give it a try. We were disappointed. Rolls were dry. Sure they're long but small in diameter. Also, they're expensive. The Hamachi sashimi was paper thin. The interior is beautifully designed, but the open kitchen concept is messy and distracting. Especially if you sit at the bar. read more

Unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of options for sushi in western MT, so I've tried this place four times now. Each time after the first, keeping my fingers crossed for a good experience and hoping that my previous ones were flukes. Every single time it's the same thing. There's a feeling you get when someone less intelligent than you is trying to talk down to you; it's this weird admixture of irritation and amusement with a mild sense of impotence because one isn't sure how to respond to the insult without debasing oneself more thoroughly. that, in a nutshell, is the experience of dining at saketome, the restaurant where the name itself tells you more or less everything you need to know about what you'll experience there. the adage "when someone tells you who they are, believe them" comes to mind when you see that name: confusing, pretentious, and, ultimately, just cynically and unduly impressed with itself. let's start with the decor: from the weird art (orientalist, racist and confusing portraits of women from various Asian countries? why are there PANDAS on the wall of a "Japanese" restaurant? bill murray? because "lost in translation?") to the insanely busy, insta-friendly interior design, this place is a slap in the face to the very concept of japanese cuisine, which prides itself on restraint and dignity. I wanted to write "picture guy fieri extruding a spicy tuna roll from a caulk gun" to give you an idea of the ethos of this place, but honestly, Guy would never do you this dirty, dear reader. With Guy, what you see is what you get. Saketome is just trying to distract you with shiny BS, hoping you'll miss how underwhelming their food is. It's never ok when a restaurant this expensive phones in their food, but to do so with sushi in particular is embarrassing because it's simply too hard to hide- the elements at play are too few to smother with a dash of sriracha mayo. The very concept of sushi, in its brilliance, lies in the subtleties of its construction: the rice must be perfectly cooked and seasoned appropriately; the fish should be handled with the utmost respect, aged, seasoned, cut and prepared with delicacy and humility. Of course, none of this Is present at Saketome. The rice was gluey, overcooked and flavorless; the toro sashimi I ordered arrived in a pile looking as though it had been cut with rusty shears; everything was either over or underseasoned, and presented with little to no consideration for appearance. I'm actually not a snob. I buy grocery store sushi all the time, I adore a gas station burrito on occasion. what I can't stand is the sort of cynicism and pretension of places like this. It's clearly a cash grab more interested in selling liquor than with any dedication to or respect for its craft, with zero respect for its clientele and probably less for its staff, who seemed tired, harried, and out to lunch (I had to ask three times for my check, two items were forgotten). I've been here a handful of times, repeatedly disappointed after giving it the benefit of the doubt, and will never go again. If you're set on sushi for dinner, do yourself a favor: go to the fresh market, grab a couple clamshells of their deli sushi and a six pack and go enjoy them by the river. Id love to say how the food is , but we sat there for 15 minutes and were completely ignored by 2 servers and a bartender. When we got up to leave, it was the typical snotty waitress attitude "I'm soooo sorry, but thats not my station. Have a nice rest of your evening ". The traditional fu of the service industry. Saketome wins points for originality. I tried the Cherry Bomb and Zootown Revelry and both were unique. Zootown revelry had a nice crunch from the cashew paste and it's hard to beat pancetta. Service was also great. I want to go again but try new items. Is this a good or bad sign for a restaurant? I was intrigued but not in love with my choices. Cute little restaurant in downtown Missoula! Has a fun big city vibe in the little town. Most of the meals are solely sushi without any variation like at some other Japanese restaurants. Last night of our Montana adventures, wanted to go to the noodle bar really downstairs but the noise was too loud. We dropped a pretty penny on Sake - how can you resist with names like Song of the Sea and Wandering Poet.
