Show was an enjoyable 90 minutes. Our seats were the worst! We were front row stage right at the wall. All we could see were the actors backs. We were in the actors way as they moved around performing. From our terrible view point the show was just okay. I already can't wait to go back. My fiancé surprised me for my birthday by taking us to see Groovy Kinda Love. When I walked in, I was thrilled to see the intimate, high class theater room. It had a swanky, old timey feel about it. We got to share a small, front row table with three other ladies who were visiting town for the weekend. Getting there 35 minutes early was a great call, because we had the cream of the crop when it came to picking seats, and we didn't have to wait in line to get in, get seated, or get drinks. The show itself was incredible. The musical numbers were hilarious, groovy, and well choreographed. Each actor/actress had an impressive ability to sing. The notes they hit definitely caused my jaw to drop open more than once. And my cheeks hurt from smiling by the time the show ended. I needed this level of joy and laughter, and the 34 West crew really delivered. read more

A colleague recommended I check this place out- and I am so glad I did! I had a wonderful date night recently at 34 West Theatre. We enjoyed an early dinner before the 7PM show- Uptown Girl- but we left room in our bellies for a bottle of champagne and some theatre snacks! I loved the snack bar- such a great touch, and I loved being able to have a snack + beverage during the show. Due to Covid, they were only filling half of the theatre. We enjoyed our personal two-top table right in front of the stage- it was perfect. Now, about the actual show itself-- it was AMAZING. The actors were so talented, and I couldn't believe I had been missing out on this place for so long! The show was about an hour long. I cannot wait to see more of their productions! The show was absolutely wonderful. The three actors were unmatched in their comedic delivery and timing. It was wonderful. Would have loved someone to throw the people out next to us because they were so drunk it detracted from our experience. Prior to the show one woman took some c*ke from a baggie and licked it w that didn't help one bit. Then the couple who was in theirs 60s were making out and his hand was up her dress. Ooh, this is a hard one to write. The four stars are unfortunately not for the performance, but just for the venue and the hospitality. The show on 6/1 was ridiculous, which based on the previous reviews was a complete surprise to us. It was silly and made little sense, and I don't think we were the only ones in the room who felt this way. We were happy it was only an hour or so long. We loved the intimacy of the theatre, the kitschy refreshments, and the fact that the actors/singers were the very friendly hosts and servers. I hope if we have the opportunity to return that the quality of the show itself will improve and be worth the ticket price. read more

I never knew that this little theater was there in the Bank of America building at 200 Meeting Street. Thankfully some friends invited us there in honor of their anniversary. I cannot say anything about the cost of it because they graciously paid for our admission as well as our tasty wine and our snacks. The seating is a bit tight, so you should not get up during the production (which you are reminded not to do) to go up front to refill your wine glass or snacks. The group of funny actors (just 3, but 2 of them also played separate, short roles) were magnificent in their dead pan comedy and singing in the production of "Can't Buy Me Love." At times, the members of the troop would come into the audience as part of the production, and at one time asked someone behind me if they could use their chair and when permission was granted they stood in the chair to call out to another troop member across the room as part of the play. All in good fun and all quite funny. All in all, quite funny, quirky and delightful. I will be back. I understand that the current production continues until the first of November, so I will wait for the next production to return, even though "Love" was good enough to see again! read more

Hilarious night out at 34 West Theater. Time travel back to 80's I wish it was. My face is frozen in a smile.

I had no idea what to expect from 34 West Theater Co and their show Power of Love. However, I saw good reviews for the theater here on Yelp, so I took the plunge and bought tickets for my two girlfriends and me before we recently visited Charleston... and I'm SO HAPPY we were able to see this show! First of all, we were expecting a traditional theater and were very surprised to walk into a cafe table set-up. We were the first in line (arriving around 7:15pm for an 8pm show, I believe) and given a couple table options, which was really fun. If you'd like to be part of the show, sit in the center! If not, take a seat off to the side. Just remember that you have to arrive early to have a choice. We had eaten dinner before the show, but I wish I had realized what an adorable array of food and drinks would be available here! They were serving a couple different alcoholic drinks (a lemon sparkle champagne/sorbet combo and a punch), wine, and sodas plus adorable snack and candy options such as popcorn, chocolate covered pretzels, malted milk balls, (which were my personal selections) etc. Everything was served in such an adorable way that even though we were quite full, I couldn't resist drinking and snacking my way through the show. Finally, the show! It was actually a lot of fun to transition from being seated/buying snacks to watching the show because we quickly realized that three of the four cast members had been seating and serving the customers before the show even began. The cast consisted of three males and one female who wore many hats (literally!) to make the show work. The three male actors were strong - both acting and vocally - while I thought the female was a little weak at times. Without question, I loved the very tall actor the best (who is also a writer and director for the company), whose name, I believe, is Stephen Wayne. He had me in stitches multiple times throughout the evening. Though I really enjoyed the actors' performances, the only thing that made me consider taking this review from 5 to 4 stars was that the plot of the show was occasionally confusing and often scattered. I just stumbled upon an article online in the Charleston Magazine called "Dramatic Duo" which might answer any additional questions that one might have about the two actors/writers/directors (Stephen Wayne and Jeff Querin) of this little theater company. I enjoyed this quote in the article and can wholeheartedly agree with it, "Our shows make you smile," notes Wayne. "They're like watching Will & Grace, Frasier, or Friends." read more

The actual show was a 3 (moonshine Christmas) because the plot was wacky. Actors were good though. The experience was a solid 4. Easy to get in and small and intimate venue. Plenty of drinks and cool ones too, including root beer floats. Popcorn and various snacks, not super expensive either. You can see from everywhere too. Interactive and fun show. read more

OMG! My hubby and I were so tired from walking all day that we almost didn't go. My husband, who would have preferred to stay in, was more than willing to stay at the hotel. WE are so glad that we went. The actors are extremely talented and hilarious. My husband and I went to see stayin alive. We arrived and I thought this cute seating area was adorable to get drinks and snacks. Little did I know this was the seating are for the play and we were looking at the stage. I understand why every review talks about it being an intimate place. You literally sit shoulder to shoulder in the front row. My husband and I were seated at a table with two other people. Throughout the play the three actors would walk through the audience acting. A very different play than what I imagined. And it reminded me of a Disney movie because they would breakout into song every five minutes. They had drinks and movie style snacks for sale. Not actual food so I would suggest eating something before if you are watching a show at dinner time. It was about an hour long play with no intermission. I tried the elder flower lemonade and my husband had the cherry cola. The best thing was the dill popcorn! And I am not a huge fan of savory flavored popcorn because it always lacks flavor. But whatever they coated the popcorn with was heavenly! I highly suggest trying it and at only $4 for a bowl how can you go wrong! read more

I went to see "Simply Irresistible" at 34 West Theater and enjoyed it but, found s few things resistible. We made reservations over a week in advance but were told when we were seated in the far back corner that seats were "first come first serve". Then why make reservations in the hopes of having good seats? Then we went up to get a drink and a snack. There were three people behind the counter and only one taking orders, which meant for a very long line. I can't say enough amazing things about our experience at 34 West Theater Company! I had my eye on going to one of their shows for several months and finally drug my boyfriend to the Moonshine County Christmas one in December. My boyfriend isn't much of the theater type, but he walked out of the show wanting to come back again because he thought it was so great! It is thoroughly obvious that they have poured their hearts and souls into their theater and their productions. The material was fresh, comical, and highly entertaining! I've been here twice now (both times for my birthday) and have not been disappointed! First off, buy your tickets early because they frequently sell out. Second, get there early because it's a tiny (read cozy) place. They'll seat your party, but if there's still tables open, you might have some sway if you're early. They have a bar and snack foods for reasonable prices and good portion sizes and I love that the actors are the ones working the snack bar before the show. Both shows have been fantastic! Last year I saw Boogie Woogie Bugle Gals and this year I saw Groovy Kinda Love. Both were made up of professional actors (2 were in both) that really played the parts. Saw last nights performance of "Speakin' Easy." It was the perfect way to spend the evening after a day of being a tourist in the city. The performers clearly have a passion for their craft, evident to everyone in the audience. The theater is a transformed yogurt shop, and it makes for an intimate setting. The drinks were really nice and reasonably priced. Everyone left smiling. If I'm back in Charleston, I'll definitely be checking them out. Attended a video presentation of Coriolanus, recorded at London's National Theatre. Film and audio quality were great, and the atmosphere was just right for a classy and cultured--but not stuffy or snobbish--night out. I wouldn't mind having more food options, but I understand they are running a tight ship; and the food they do have is great. The choose-your-own triple snack combo is a good deal; they did not skimp on portions. They also have plenty of quality beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drink selections. It only took one show for us to purchase season passes! These guys write and star in some of the funniest shows I've ever seen. You can tell the difference when someone phones it in instead of truly loving what they do; these guys live for their work. Not only are they kind gentleman but they also sling drinks and scoop popcorn until everyone is happy and ready to laugh. Walking into 34 west theater, my Midwest family had no clue what to expect. Being avid fans of beach boys and motown, "Groovy Kind of Love" could have gone terribly wrong or very well...and those 4 actors pleasantly surprised us. Went to the screening of Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch and this place was great! The place was cozy with a vintage feel. The snack bar offered charleston chews (frozen option too), caramel popcorn, salted buttered popcorn, mixed nuts, and some candy options. I had the sangria while my husband had the Riesling. Great fun place. Hadn't heard of this theater company, but wife found it on line and at the last minute too. I wanted dinner, she wanted theater.. She won, found a listing of events and the current show "Radio Hitchcock" sounded like fun. Place wasn't hard to find. On line said out tickets were at the theater. When we walked in, sign said check in at the snack bar. Guess, they were only expecting one more couple, but when they asked if I had purchased tickets for this nights show and I said yes, they were happy. Some selection of beers, wine, sodas and plenty of non-healthy snacks to go with the show. Now the production and cast were GREAT... loved the small venue, well directed. Some interaction with the crowd. Very humorous. I will definitely keep an eye out for future shows. I looked at the earlier 2015 shows and there were a couple that caught my eye. So I hope 2016 looks good to. Ticket prices were $25 each, general seating. Most of the snacks were about $7. read more
