This French restaurant is located in a charming 3-story historic Jefferson house, once owned by Thomas Jefferson's great-granddaughter, Maria Jefferson Eppes Shine. The restaurant is on the first floor, with the entrance tucked away in the back. They have parking in the back. The second and third floors are home to a cozy Bed and Breakfast. We arrived right at 6 p.m. and were seated at a special table by the window. The restaurant isn't huge, but it has a lovely atmosphere. Renee was our server and treated us to a complimentary champagne for the occasion. She explained the menu and the specials. The Chefs Dinner Menu was fascinating, but unfortunately, I don't eat lamb. The menu changes frequently, so I'll definitely check it out again in the future and pair it with the optional Sommelier's wine pairing. There are so many wonderful choices, but I finally decided on the Bouillabaisse, remembering all the positive comments on Yelp. When my order arrived, it was presented on a large platter with a gorgeous display. It tasted as good as it looked, with the lobster eyes staring at me. It was a whole lobster, conveniently cut, which made it easier to eat. The combination of lobster, shrimp, mussels, and clams in a saffron-flavored broth was amazing. I'm so glad I chose it. My husband opted for the Steak au Poivre with Pomme Aligot. It's mashed potatoes with melted cheese, butter, and cream. The texture was a bit tougher than regular mashed potatoes, but still delicious. I tasted his filet, and it was so tender. He loves the poivre sauce on his steak. Renee recommended all the wines we picked. We started with the complimentary Frederic Chopin Brut Blanc de Blanc, and we really liked it, so we ordered more. For my meal, I had the Barbebelle Rosé, and my husband had the Peyrassol Merlot Syrah blend. Both wines complemented our meal perfectly. We did run into an issue with my Bouillabaisse, as it was a bit too salty. The manager, Parnos, came and apologized and had the chef prepare a new batch for me. They fixed the problem right away. When you walk in, you'll grab a menu and order at the counter. They bring your food to your table, but otherwise it's self-service--drinks and refills, silverware, and anything else you need. The woman who greeted us was friendly, asked if we'd been in before, and explained how everything worked. We started with the Mezze Sampler ($19.99), which comes with hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, ezme dip, and a generous amount of fresh-baked naan. And when I say generous...we had a mound of bread! The naan was thick, soft, light and fluffy--almost pillowy--and made a great blank canvas for trying all the different dips. The hummus was what I kept going back to. The baba ghanoush was good, although not quite as flavorful as others I've had. The tabbouleh tasted fresh and ended up being one of my favorite discoveries. I added some to my chicken shawarma wrap and loved the extra flavor it brought. The ezme definitely had some heat to it; this spice-sensitive girl stopped after one bite. For my meal, I ordered the Chicken Shawarma Wrap with fries ($16.99). The chicken was tender and well seasoned. I thought it had a little kick; my husband disagreed and called it simply well seasoned, so take my definition of "spicy" accordingly. I do wish I'd ordered a side of their yogurt sauce to add to my wrap because it was delicious. My husband went with the Chicken Shawarma Bowl & Naan ($18.99) and was happy with his meal. My brother had the Falafel Bowl & Naan ($16.99) along with the pickled vegetables, which he enjoyed. The falafel was moist rather than dry, but fairly mild on its own and benefited from the dips and toppings. My sister-in-law ordered the Chicken Shish ($7) as a high-protein option. It arrived as a small bowl of chicken rather than actually being presented on a skewer. Food came out FAST--one order arrived about two minutes before the other--but nothing was particularly hot. The fries were okay, and portions overall were good. We had leftovers. The dining room itself is quite small. It wasn't busy during our visit, so seating wasn't an issue, but the tables are close enough together that I could see maneuvering chairs being difficult if the restaurant were full. One other thing worth knowing: the restroom is accessed from outside, around the building. Inside the restaurant was clean. Our four-person total between two checks was about $110 including tax, with the Mezze Sampler, entrées, a few extra sides and fountain drinks. For me, that's where Zaria lands closer to the middle. The food was good, but at this price point I personally prefer a sit-down restaurant with full table service rather than a counter-service experience. There were definitely things we enjoyed--the fresh tabbouleh, tender chicken, hummus and that huge pile of soft naan among them. Nothing about our visit was bad; it simply wasn't one that left me thinking about what I'd order on my next visit. A solid fast-casual Mediterranean option, particularly if you're looking for something quick.
