I wanted him to have that same opportunity. What I saw here raised one red flag after another. The Kenpo taught here struck me as so watered down and Americanized that I had trouble recognizing it as the martial art I hoped my son would learn. They've incorporated boxing movements that, in my experience, make little sense in karate sparring. I was genuinely surprised to see ducking taught as a move. The belt progression concerned me even more. My son has a friend who earned a black belt here at age 12 after only three years of training. On its own, that might warrant a closer look. Combined with fees for each belt test, it left me with the impression that promotions are happening far too quickly. A black belt should represent years of demonstrated skill and hard work, not a series of paid tests. I also found the push to commit to months of training troubling. Other reviews allege that families were asked to leave five-star reviews; I can't verify those claims, but they added to my concerns. I'm sure some children enjoy the classes. But from what I saw, the emphasis seemed to be on keeping kids entertained and moving through belts, rather than teaching a disciplined martial art with meaningful standards. If you want a fun hour-long activity for your child, this may suit you. If you want serious, traditional martial arts instruction, I would look elsewhere. To me, this had every hallmark of a "McDojo."

My 4-year old son has been attending classes at Planet Gymnastics for almost a year now and he…read moreloves it! It never ceases to amaze me how different and creative every class is. There are courses built out all over the gym for the kids and they're different every week. They get especially creative around the holidays. They move around the gym to different stations with creative obstacle courses, like climbing along the rungs of a ladder and trying not to fall through the cracks into the swamp with the alligators or hopping over the witches hats on the balance beam! All this really keeps the kids engaged. The teachers are very patient as the little kids aren't usually following all of the directions and they keep the environment fun. Even when my son gets scared of new things, the instructors give the kids the space and support they need to get them motivated to participate. On top of making the classes super fun for the kids, Planet Gymnastics goes above and beyond and recognizes each kid periodically throughout the year with medals, giving them a sense of accomplishment and something to physically bring home for all of their hard work.

Only me and one other student showed up, and the place smelled like a sweat-fest (those ballerinas before us must have been workin' it). Teacher was casual, a very talented choreographer, and hungry because she kept going to the side of the studio to eat her dinner in between instructions. I didn't sweat (again, I think my body was tricked by the studio's aroma into thinking it wasn't necessary) but I did feel challenged by the routine. Only about 1/3 of the class time was dedicated to dancing; the rest was warm up moves, funkywalking across the floor, stretching, and ab exercises. The music choices were contemporary which was a plus. I would have liked to learn a longer routine than three counts of 8, but its all good.

The two young women who led the event were absolutely wonderful managing several 4 and 5 year olds. Everyone had the best time, and I had parents telling me how much their kid loved it. Some said they would be signing their kid up for lessons! My one criticism is that it is pretty hard to reach someone about birthdays. I had left several messages and it took a few days for someone to return my car. It was much better once we were emailing, although I did have to email a few days before the event to confirm and ask when we could get in to decorate.

My daughter had a hard time doing kartwheels and got no help at all while practicing, and felt defeated a few weeks in a row with a specific instructor who paid no attention to help her. We decided to try out the summer camp the following summer and I enrolled my daughter, who was 5 at the time, in for a few weeks. It was going fine until the third day I dropped her off. She was having a hard time with me leaving, and the young instructor was not particularly helpful. She gave her some coloring pages and was sitting with her talking to other instructors as I walked out of the building. I got in my car and a few minutes later started to drive away. I looked in my rearview mirror and saw my daughter had run out of the building alone into the parking lot looking for me. I jumped out of my car in a panic and grabbed her. When I walked back into the building, there was ZERO concern that they had not supervised my child and had not even noticed she had run out of the building. They looked at me like I was overreacting when I explained my concern. I was horrified by the lack of professionalism and disregard for my child. I will never return or recommend anyone to this facility.

(We have already booked his second Birthday party because this one was EXCEPTIONAL!! To be 100% transparent, my sister Brooke is the General Manager which means I had the highest of expectations. From the very start of the planning process, the staff was always readily and willingly available to answer any and all of my questions (trust me, there were plenty!) I never felt rushed. When we walked in we were greeted by several friendly faces and open arms (ready to take boxes, decorations, cake etc.) Annabelle was truly amazing! She continuously checked in with both my Husband and I to see if there was anything we or our guests needed. She even helped us set up the decorations, she truly went ABOVE and BEYOND!!! The owner Jeremy happened to stop by the day of our event and didn't leave before making sure he checked in. If you are contemplating having any type of celebration at MPower Athletics, book it! We've been members of this club for over three years, and overall, we've had a positive experience…read morewith the facility itself. However, our experience with the Kids Club has been extremely disappointing. About a year and a half ago, my son had an incident where a staff member teased him. He reacted in a playful but inappropriate way, and as a result, he was suspended for a week. At the time, he was also dealing with a serious medical condition that was affecting him neurologically, which we later came to understand may have influenced his behavior. Out of caution, he did not return to Kids Club after that incident. Now that he is doing much better, and I have returned to full-time work, I recently attempted to bring him back--only to be told that he is permanently banned. The reason given was a Facebook comment I had made at the time describing our experience. I made multiple attempts to have a calm, reasonable conversation with staff to revisit the situation, especially given the time that has passed and my son's improved health. Unfortunately, there was no willingness to reconsider. This puts us in a very difficult position. As a working parent, I rely on the Kids Club in order to use the gym. Without access to childcare, we are now faced with canceling a membership we've maintained for years--not because we want to, but because we no longer have a way to utilize the facility. What's most concerning is the lack of empathy and accountability in how this situation has been handled. I sincerely hope the club takes a closer look at how interactions with children are managed, and how situations like this are resolved, so that other families don't have a similar experience.

They updated the dumbells and tvs and added a turf area in the past year. The pulley towers are ancient and almost always have at least 1 station broken, broken clips/pins, 7.5# weights that don't work well, bars with sharp burrs, etc... Outdated. Missing many machines that modern gyms have. For abour $70/month one would expect better. Seems more geared towards families with kids and elderly. Always adding on new fees and trying to sell extras.

We were never informed there was a fee to quit when we signed up, Jennifer Luth said most people just pay all summer and not go (why would anyone do that?) and make them up during the school year?? (which is adventageous for them because they still get their money and you'd likely forget how many makeup classes you needed or you just wouldn't be able to do them because of other activities) or we could pay a fee to leave. I replied to her email on June 16 to ask what this fee is and received no response as of June 29th. We've had to call our bank to stop the charges. And no, I specifically chose to handle this via email so I would have written proof. As for the classes, I was not at all impressed. There was no actual karate taught, instead my child spent the hour playing duck duck goose, red light green light, doing basic obstacle courses or running back and forth. Overall, We had a lousy experience, felt like we were taken advantage of and cannot recommend this place.

The owners, Mike and Jen, and the staff are very dedicated to the style and to the students who come for training. As a practical style Uechi Ryu requires consistent and continuous practice and dedication, under direct supervision and practice outside of regular classes. They go out of their way to train the students properly and also provide many opportunities for everyone to support local charities. The school and training is not just about karate and physical action, the style and the school emphasize a whole-person concept of positive behavior and community, both inside and outside of the dojo. I highly recommend a visit to see exactly what it is like.
