What a fantastic experience from bar service through dinner. Jamie was our bartender and service...she was fantastic. Chef came out several times to answer questions, make recommendations, etc. He's been there for 20 years and can tell you about the interior which is all repurposed wood from many different eras. Tried the vegan steak as I'd never seen a plant-based steak option. It was quite good! If you are vegan, chef will create dishes for you outside of the steak, if interested. I brought my family here a year ago and I've been too upset to leave a comment here. it was terrible. the food wasn't cooked properl y and tasted bad. we should have left but we thiugh it would get better. it didn't. The waitress was nervous and ended up dropping plates on the table which spilled food everywhere including my lap. we left most of our food behind, the bill was almost $70. I wasn't happy. After calling the next day & many times afte, the manager said he couldn't do anything. The last time I called, he hung up on me!!!!!!! So I gave up and tell everyone my story & not to go there because the food is terrible and the manager is a jerk. We started off my dinners in Bismarck on a high note and I think the other steak houses in town will be hard pressed to top the meal we had here at 40. It's 40 because they serve forty-ounce steaks. Yeah, that's over two pounds of beef and over a kilo for you non-Americans. A big piece of cow. To start, we had the pork belly appetizer and I then had an excellent wedge salad before my 18 ounce bone-in rib eye appeared. Cooked to order and served with a small amount of mushrooms (this is $4 worth?) plus a side of horseradish that was super hot. The steak was cooked to order (medium rare) and was quite flavorful. We sat at a table in the bar area and the service there was excellent. After dinner, we shifted over to a table next to the fireplace which was quite comfortable. Good wine list and a reasonable selection of beers. Dinner for three with the starters and a *lot* of wine was $77 each plus tip. Recommendations: - The hanger steak prepared medium rare if you have a taste for steak but don't want a huge 20 or 40 oz piece or meat or want to pay $40 for the filet - the 40oz porterhouse that's offered on Wednesday's is a good buy. Yes it's a lot of meat. No i don't eat all of it. I normally take the filet out and save that for the next day. And for $40, not bad if I'm getting two meals - the ahi tuna is awesome if you're not into red meat. My husband and I rarely go out to eat, but it was my birthday so I asked him if we could try something new. I was excited to try something other than a chain restaurant. I was suprized to see dead plants tipped over in their plastic pots in the entrance to the place. Just looked trashy. A simple cleaning up would give a better impression. The hostess and server were welcoming and friendly. My husband ordered a steak, and I ordered the seafood skewers. The skewers were HORRIBLE. Absolutely NO seasoning, 4 shrimp and a small lobster tail covered in what looked like paprika. I'm not convinced the lobster or shrimp were even cooked through. Served on a bed of vegetables, it looked delicious but it was SO disappointing. It was mushy, watery, had a raw texture and wasn't even seasoned with salt. I couldn't eat it. My husband enjoyed his steak. I had a bite of it and again, no seasoning. The baked potato was as big as my head, but there was no salt or pepper on the table. Of course our server checked on us to ask if everything was OK, but my husband said it was fine before I had a chance to let either of them know my food was bad, and then she was gone. I'm always reluctant to complain about anything, but for the price I should have asked for something else. Wow, I never would have expected to find a place like this in Bismarck ND. The old farmhouse style, dark wood building gives way to what earned the international dry aged steak competition a few years back. Sit at the bar or in the dining room, but definitely take them up on the kitchen tour to see their dry aging process. Over 100 days, 32 degrees, 50% humidity, blocks of pink Himalayan salt, all gives the meat a taste and texture that you simply cannot reproduce at home. Every night they have a special for $40, I got the 40oz. T-bone. That's right, 40 oz of 100+day dry aged steak for $40. That same meal would easily cost three times as much in a place like Chicago or New York. The best part, the meat meets expectations. Dinner was steak and a glass of wine that night, and it was the best meal I have had in a while. Foodgasm is really the best word to describe it. Was in town for work and had a vendor takes out! My first impression of the place is that it's an old school steakhouse and I love the rustic feel! Service from when we walked in to till we left was excellent overall! The menu is a nice array of options from. Seafood to steaks to pastas! All of it is ala cart! I loved the selection of whiskey and bourbon they offer and a nice wine list! We got a few starters in the bison meatballs (pretty good and good flavor 4 to an order), deviled eggs (6 in th order but not packed with much flavor unfortunately) and the 40 seafood dip (good portion and great flavors)! I got the prime rib with shrimp as the meal and the prime rib has a lot of flavor and tender! Only downside for the price is the piece isn't huge and seemed to be maybe a bit more fatty then I've had elsewhere! But flavor was good and the tenderness was excellent! The shrimp were cooked to perfection! Ashton who was our server was excellent and made good recommendations and overall a good first experience! Bartenders need basic training. Ordered a gin martini - Aviation gin, stirred, bone dry, straight up. Pretty simple. I was served something cloudy, room temperature, and yellowish colored. Tasted awful. I asked what it was and was assured that it was a bone dry martini. It was undrinkable, so I ordered a gin & tonic instead. Twice the waitress came back to ask if I wanted it dry also. Huh?? Fortunately they got it right - but still charged me for the crappy drink that I sent back, as well as charging me extra for the olives. Food was OK. I wasn't prepared for the price. Everything is à la cart so the meal was expensive. The steak was very good and perfectly grilled. The $4 baked potato was large and perfectly baked. One thing that disappointed me was the bread. I'm not sure what type bread it was, but it had a strange flavor, was stale and a barely warm. I expected it to be delicious, but it wasn't. I took my family out for a birthday dinner, The east 40 for years had a reputation for some of the best food in town.  That has changed!  The last couple of times we have eaten there the food has been less then good.  The other night we gave it one it one last shot.  6 of us went, 4 of us has a variety of different steaks (Strip, T-Bone, Cowboy, Teres Major) with loaded baked potatoes,  one had Walleye and one had a Toyko steak bowl.   Other then the fish which my sister said was good,  the rest of us couldn't even finish our steaks.  They looked beautiful on the outside but portions of the steaks were so raw you could hear them moo when you cut into them.  The potatoes were like rubber.  I swear they made them days before then heated them in a microwave.  The Deviled eggs may have been the most disgusting thing I've eaten in YEARS! This was our last visit to the 40.  We have given them more then enough chances to get their groove back like they had years ago and it is just NOT going to happen.  By the end of the night it was a $500 bill for a meal I wouldn't serve to death row inmates. If  you are looking for a good steak, I would suggest ANY place other then the 40.  You could probably get a better steak at the Rocking 50s Cafe in the mall at this point. read more

This is a hidden treasure! We came in just before closing so the place wasn't very busy, there was one family in the dining room and 2 parties in the lounge. The furniture was very old fashioned and the decorations looked from another time, matching the cabin aesthetic. The bartender waited our table, and she was awesome. She had great recommendations and made the best Old Fashion I've had! There were so many good options for food, we ended up going with a sirloin and linguini, with lobster mac & cheese. Been here twice since I'm in a hotel across the street. Food has been good each time but my issue begins and ends with lounge area tonight. Walked in tonight and the majority of the bar and lounge area was dirty and full of plates and food from previous diners. The bartender was a grumpy older man who told me it would be awhile before I could sit at the bar in a clean area. I asked what TV had the game on and was told by grumpy it doesn't matter because he won't change them. If I'm going to drop $70 on a meal in Bismarck ND I should expect basic courtesy and professionalism. This place can kiss my ass as there are many other steak house choices.
