Stopped in for an impromptu round of wine on a Friday evening. The restaurant was pretty crowded and smelled deliciously like fresh seafood. The bar seating was completely full, but the bartender was quick to offer our group a nearby table to enjoy our wine. The staff were VERY friendly, the ambiance was warm and inviting, and the wine glasses were beautiful. With all of the people and the higher ceilings, it was a little loud in there. 424 Walnut is a local restaurant that serves upscale foods in a more-casual setting. Examples of menu items are shrimp cocktail, mussels, steak salad, angus burger, lamb chops, veal piccata, crab cakes, stuffed salmon, and filet mignon. The restaurant also has menus for wines and cocktails. Please see my attached photos for some menus for October 2023. For my husband's and my 24th anniversary, I made a reservation for dinner. The restaurant's website had a reservation form to fill out. Later, the restaurant sent me two emails to confirm my reservation. On the day of the reservation, I decided that I wanted to move the reservation time from 7 PM to 6 PM. I called the restaurant's phone number a couple of times before an employee answered, and she courteously changed my reservation to 6 PM. My husband and I parked our vehicle on the street. I had not read about a dress code, so I wore a dress, and my husband wore dress pants with a polo shirt. Some other customers were wearing casual clothes. The seating hostess seated us at a comfortable and clean table. Our waiter spoke to us politely, timed the courses of the meal well, and checked in with us. One menu item that I wanted was no longer available, so I chose an alternate menu item instead. Here are my reviews for our foods and beverage: Bread - $0 - 5 stars - At the beginning of our meal, we received two types of breads, and we enjoyed their freshness and flavors. Crab hoezel - $18 - 4 stars - This appetizer contained a good amount of fresh crab. It tasted slightly sour because of a lemon and I assume vinegar. Seared tuna - $18 - 4 stars - The tuna was fresh and tasted smokey. It was accompanied with seaweed salad, pickled ginger, and wasabi. My husband commented that some tuna was shredded rather than cut neatly. Filet mignon - $38 - 5 stars - I ordered a 5-ounce filet mignon that was cooked medium. It was properly cooked and tasted nicely smokey. It was topped with flavorful mushrooms and scallions. On the side was rice that was cooked well and butternut squash that tasted sweet. Halibut - $45 - 3 stars - This halibut was fresh, but it tasted plain, despite being topped with jumbo lump crab and resting on top of spinach. On the side was the same rice that I had. My husband chose to not finish all of the halibut. We recommend adding another ingredient(s) to make the halibut more flavorful. Vanilla creme brûlée - $8 - 5 stars - This creme brûlée had the hard sugar on top as well as cream and a fresh blackberry. It tasted wonderfully sweet. Toasted coconut pie - $8 - 4.5 stars - This slice of pie tasted definitely tasted like coconut and had cream on the side. Apple sangria - $12 - 3 stars - This sangria was supposed to contain pinot noir, bourbon, syrup, and apple cider. I, however, did not taste any syrup or apple cider. The total price for our food and tax was $157. Of course, we also added a tip. In addition, the receipt said that the restaurant charges an extra 2.5% surcharge for credit cards. Hubby and I needed dinner on short notice one Thursday evening and were delighted to find that 424 Walnut had a table available. The staff were friendly, the menu was varied, and we were soon tucking into a bowl of Italian sausage soup (him) and the crab cake entree with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Always love this cutie little venue. I must say I have always liked everything I have ordered. I was just there last night because another restaurant would not seat us for another hour. The Penguins were playing and it seemed when we arrived a ladies group or large family had come in and most restaurants here on Mondays are closed so Tuesday can be busy if no reservations not to mention a game. Rick was awesome (recommend him), and as a group we got to try a little bit of everything on the menu. Timing between courses and deserts, drinks and busy tables was great. read more

My mom took me here for dinner a few weeks ago. She had been here before and said it was delicious. Well, she wasn't wrong. We started with some drinks at the bar while we were waiting for our table. We had arrived a little early and the owner was going to move some things around to seat us but we said we'd love to hang at the bar for a bit. The bar had such a cozy feel. I had the jackfrost and my mom had the fall sangria. Both delicious. The owner came over about 10 minutes later to let us know our table was ready. Our server was a wonderful young lady whose name is escaping me. She provided some great suggestions for the menu, she checked on us regularly and we wound up having a great conversation with her towards the end of the meal. We realized that my mom had a connection to the owner, so she brought him over and he was just as lovely, chatting with my mom. We had the beans and greens as an appetizer, excellent flavor and the sausage in it was so delicious! I had the salmon stuffed with crab...so flavorful! My mom had the double pork chop and said it was the very best pork chop she's ever had. Not to mention our meals came with a baked potato and mine also had asparagus. It was quite a large portion for the price, we both took leftovers home. We ended with the homemade bread pudding. This was some of the best bread pudding I've ever had, comparable to what you'd get in New Orleans. This was just one of those unexpected gems. I really enjoyed eating out at a nice spot! I'm new to the area and Sewickley is definitely a place I want to come back to! I found a spot right out front, super lucky! And we had reservations so we were seated right away. We ordered a bottle of wine and each of us ordered a steak. The steak was beautifully cooked. Only thing is it needed just a touch of seasoning. Because of Covid, no salt or pepper on the table and I definitely could have asked but it truly felt like I would have offended the chef by asking so I didn't! The other really weird this was that when we first came in, they took our temperatures and it looked like they were providing ample space between customers and then, with empty tables, they sat a party of three right next to us. I was really surprised by that, it didn't seem like the best move. It was a really nice meal and I would happily go back any time! read more

I had the red snapper with lump crabmeat and opted for sautéed spinach (in lieu of baked potato)- this was a fantastic combination. The stuffed banana peppers were perfectly spicy and stuffed generously. The beans and greens were cooked well but needed a touch more salt to bring them to my taste. It is rare in my experience that you get everything you want in a restaurant. This place had all that's important to me and more. Great food, great service, perfect portions, perfect atmosphere. Likely the best meal I've had out in a very very long time. I had the stuffed shrimp. It was super flavorful, served hot, and cooked just right. The sides of potatoes and spinach were almost better than the shrimp. I also got to taste the veal piccata... fantastic. Dare I say we had some picky eaters in our group. Yet somehow, no complaints. Only praise of all the meals, and some great fellowship in a great place. You never know what you'll get when you bring a 91 and 89 year old with a 15 year old all in the same group. What we got was Lexi who could easily be working in the best New York City restaurant. Her caring service was constantly on point. Frequented this establishment for Valentine's Day. Great ambiance, nice bar, lots of locals. Since they either don't possess a license or are restricted, the bar is lacking the typical friendly vibe like th Turn Club, Kaufman Tavern, or Domenicos has. Food was good. Not bad, not outstanding. This is by far our favorite restaurant. Everything from the staff to the location to the decor is high class. We always feel at home here with amazing dishes and personable conversations. My advice to you is don't skimp on trying the menu! Get an app, get a meal, get the dessert and try the drinks! All are wonderful. Everything tastes authentic and comes in large portions. If there were 10 stars, we would rate it a 10! At times you can get away with out making a reservation, but if I were to recommend this restaurant to a friend or family, I would recommend you secure your spot and get one. Don't wait! This is an excellent dining experience. Cozy, stylish neighborhood favorite, as it was at capacity. My appetizer was grilled Halloumi with roasted asparagus, portobello mushrooms, yellow bell pepper, and zucchini! It was grilled to perfection. My entree was a grilled medium-well salmon filet with sautéed spinach and a baked potato. Seasoned with herbs and orange glaze it was simply delicious. I brought it home for dinner another night. Fresh decor in neutral colors, large mirrors on the walls, farmhouse style chandeliers, and candles in the windows. A definite 2nd + + visit. I understand that there is no exact script that I should expect to have followed from one server to another when dining out . Some tend to be more welcoming, and friendlier, than others. Totally understood that serving others can be unpleasant from time to time. However, what I do not like to see or experience, from a server, is one who is not very welcoming, and appears disinterested with the table of patrons being served. The service received today falls into this category. I have had more enthusiastic service at McDonald's. Today's service fell short for the following reasons or voids. Not greeting your customers. Not taking the beverage order within a reasonable amount of time . ( Avoid reacting negatively when alcohol is not chosen) Do not act annoyed if you are asked to repeat the descriptions of today's specials. No apology for a seemingly soiled napkin that was asked to be replaced. Not following up with your table to see if anything else was needed . No offer for desserts, more water etc.. Service was the ho hum of my 1st outing here. Bare basic. However, food, atmosphere, portion size, and dining companions were fantastic with a capital F. I honestly cannot wait to return, but I certainly hope it will be with a more in- tune server. read more

Ok yelp, sometimes you have to have a rating when a restaurant is beyond a 5 rating. This is the best meal I have had in a long time. There were 30 of us for lunch, celebrating the life of a wonderful woman that we lost much too soon. Before we came we were offered a selection: 1. Beet, pear, goat cheese, and arugula salad  2. Penne pasta - vegetarian  3. Chicken Marsala  4. Grilled salmon Ok no beets for me, i dont care how attractively it was presented. I chose the grilled salmon which was a sizable portion with a citrus glaze. It was accompanied by a large baked potato with butter and sour cream on the side, and fresh asparagus. It was perfect. My husband chose the chicken marsala which had the same sides as mine. As is typical we switched plates so we could sample both. Could we finish it all? No. Well there was my dinner. My friend ordered the penne. It looked wonderful. Luckily for me, she doesnt care for asparagus and mushrooms. So she gave them to me. That gave me a taste of the penne sauce. Yum. Then she took back an asparagus spear to try. She hates asparagus but loved this. Finally dessert, what to order. First of all they are all made "in house". It was suggested that we order the chocolate creme brulee and the mascarpone cheesecake. Both were to die for, especially the very rich creme brulee. My asparagus hating friend ordered the toasted coconut pie, another winner. My other friend loves key lime and ordered that. HUGE portions which is good because who doesnt like dessert, especially exceptionally good dessert. Everything was nicely plated. Service was attentive. I definitely will return when I am back in town. This lunch was fabulous. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. This restaurant is a WINNER! read more

I came to Sewickley for dinner one evening and after perusing social media reviews and menus, I stopped in here. The menu looked pretty decent and they had stuffed banana peppers for an appetizer, which I was interested in trying. Getting there, they were moderately busy, and I sat at the bar. I asked for the wine list, since this is a really pretty joint on the inside and had such an interesting menu, I thought for sure they'd have a wine program... Well, they really don't. The had a very basic wine list (like any basic hotel lobby) and then it jumped from basic glasses (like $11) to Caymus for $190/bottle?!?!?! Who does this?!?!? I mentioned this to the bartender and she advised that others who enjoy wine also complain about their wine selection and said that they are working on updating their wine list. I did see Silver Oak hanging on the wall, again shocked, because these wines clearly aren't tiered properly. Unfortunately, if I can't have a decent wine (and not the $190 Caymus, which is WAYYYY over-priced for a $79 bottle of wine, even at a restaurant), I'm not staying for dinner. So, I tried the stuffed banana peppers and drank some Kettle One with it and then I was out. I'd like to go back, if/when they get their wine program established! read more

She was literally 3' from us at the cash register and would not acknowledge us. I tried in vain to flag her down, and she would not look at us. It was almost comical! We had fantastic service when we stopped into 424 Walnut in search of a quick meal. We were pressed for time and our server kept things moving quickly, which we appreciated immensely. She was prompt, attentive and helpful, everything you'd want from a server. I forgot to get her name. I wish I could mention it here. We ordered from the appetizer menu - a wedge salad and a Caesar, and a shrimp cocktail and the beans and greens. The best of these was the beans and greens. We added the hot sausage, and the overall dish was a flavor bomb. Delicious in every way. Nice rich broth with a good balance of tender beans and chopped greens, and the spice from the sausage was a great complement. The shrimp in the cocktail could have been cleaned better - the poop vein remained in the last bite of each shrimp, and that was unappetizing. Otherwise it was adequate. The Caesar was tasty, but heavy with parmesan cheese, which was more chunky than flaky, and weighed down the overall salad experience. The wedge was a solid wedge salad - nice selection of fresh toppings on an appealing wedge of iceberg. If you have to eat iceberg lettuce, this is the best use of it. So, we had a satisfactory quick meal at 424 Walnut, especially due to the great service and despite the few food shortcomings I mentioned above. The rest of the menu seemed like a wide range of upscale dishes, and if you're out for a nice dinner, you can bet most folks will be happy enough here. read more

Did not appreciate the extra "tax" of 2.5% on top of my bill for using a credit card. When a restaurant charges $35 a plate and up, I don't want to be charged extra for using a credit card. My girlfriend and I stopped here for lunch. We were seated immediately and received exceptional service. The restaurant has a full bar on one side as well as table and partial booth seating. Upon our waiter's recommendation we went with the open faced crabcake sandwich with a cheese topping and a bowl of French onion soup. This is one of the better French onion soups I've had in a while. It had parsley in it to bring out the flavor. The crabcake was real and you have a choice of either French fries or coleslaw. We both chose the latter and believe me it was delicious! While they offer a daily soup/half sandwich combination on the menu they weren't doing this on the day of our visit since they had a special soup of the day and extended menu offerings. They have one gender neutral restroom and no free WiFi. Located on Walnut St in Sewickley metered street parking is available. read more

Maybe it was my meal choice, but the menu is not huge, and not being a mushroom lover or wanting a salad for dinner, narrowed it even further. I ordered the chicken Romano and shrimp entree. Hellaciously expensive for a chicken breast, three grilled shrimp, lukewarm mashed potatoes and about an ounce of vegetables. Nothing was flavorful. I have no issue paying a premium for good food. This just isn't the place to spend your $$$. I sat at the bar and moved three times to try to get to a spot where the ceiling fan wasn't freezing me. No one else was at the bar so I had no cohorts to tell me if I was crazy but the bartender agreed 'it can get cold'. Uh, why not turn off the fan. It was 50 degrees and raining outside. read more

Our party of 6 had a wide range of food- appetizers, entree salads, and an entree - and the food was excellent as was our server Nicole Everyone was ready to leave very satisfied until we got our checks and saw the Old Fashioneds that 2 in our party were drinking were $22. It was bad enough that they were $10 more than a bar around the corner but the breakdown on the bill was $17 for the bourbon, $2.50 for the mix and $2.50 for ICE!!! My husband and I tried this place and loved it. The stuffed salmon was one of the best we ever had ! You must try their soup of the day as our waiter advised that this was what the resteraunt was known for. We had the shrimp bisque and it was delicious. My husband loved his chicken risotto, although I did like my salmon better. Save room for dessert, because they are all made in house . The mascarpone cheesecake was amazing, thanks to our great waiter for the recommendation. We would come back here in a heartbeat. Especially enjoyed the grilled haloumi with grilled veggies - they were so smoky and flavorful would definitely get this again. Their Caesar salad was super refreshing and tasty. And a male server checked me out from head to toe with his eyes and smiled in a disgusting manner when I asked where the bathroom was. I emailed the restaurant to complain and no one returned my message or called me The spinach salad was disgusting, bland, and had old spinach in it. The tuna was served almost well done and looked like it was sawed with a dull blade. The server was slow and didn't even offer a glass of tap water. There is no drink list to know prices or varieties of wine. DO NOT GO HERE! And that male server that decided to check me out in a sexual manner should be fired. A fantastic dinner with my wife and grandmother! The menu is quite robust for entrees, with a few great specials as well. I had the pappardelle with salmon which was deliciously creamy and a huge portion. My wife has the scallops - golden on the bottom and crispy on the top, a true delight. Alex was an excellent waitress who recommended a sterling Cabernet wine which might be one of my new favorites. Joe, the owner, was very friendly and a very hard worker to make sure everything was running smoothly. Very fast service as well! Someone my grown daughter knows put us into this restaurant located at 424 Walnut in the town of Sewickly, Pennsylvania (in Allegheny County). It's a small bar looking street restaurant from the outside. It's food happiness quotient is extraordinary. It is maybe 40' deep by 35' wide, with a bar up the left wall. After that are 3 up-doen rows of banquet table rows with facing chairs It's ambiance is urban chic with the expected sounds of happy diners Our server, Alexia (more later on) said apps were good for two We got 2, as we were 4. Jumbo Lump Crab Hoelzel served in a stem glass. Light fresh and put a great taste in your mouth. Mussels in Provencal renderings. Sort of a mild herbal butter. Delightful! Main courses Two Chicken Penne,smelled wonderful and those eating said great things about it Veal Shrimp and Peppers. Looked heavenly and the one ordering said great words. I got Veal Piccata Extra thin medallions soft enough to cut with a fork. One of the sides were soft small potatoes that were so extraordinary that I needed to tell our server,Alexia.
