We walked into 44 Canteen and were pleasantly greeted by the host and seated at the front window, the best view in the house! We started dinner with a couple of their signature drinks and their "Sloppy Disco Fries". I had The Republic (Deep Eddy Citrus Vodka, Grapefruit Juice, Madeira, Honey Simple Syrup)...AMAZING! It was just enough sweetness for me and totally hit the spot. Now, those Sloppy Disco Fries are DANGEROUS, friends. I mean, eat the whole plate dangerous, and the plate is the size of a saute pan! They were so worth it, though. All that queso, chicken chorizo, shredded cheese, pickled jalapenos smothered on crispy fries; absolutely delicious! For my main course, I had the 'Faux-Rito Pie'. I am not going to lie, this was not the dish for me and that is totally my fault because I misread the description. I am sure anyone who enjoys chili and beans would love this taco. My husband sure did when I brought it home in a to-go box. They have 12 rotating craft beer taps from both local joints and worldwide, signature drinks, and a seasonal menu. If you are looking for a good variety of casual food with a cool environment, this is a great option in The District. read more

We moved here last year from Chicago and the first time here we loved it . The shrimp tacos are amazing and the fresh squeezed margaritas are on point. Been back 3 times and always great service. read more

I was really excited to try this new restaurant as I love 44 Stone. However they have no idea how to handle a crowd. They took forever to get us food and drinks and then to top it off, the hostess and manager were horribly rude and the owner yelled at our table of 8 women and two kids! read more

The food is amazing. Scratch made with local ingredients. Sloppy Jose with house made chicken chorizo is so good. If you like caesar they make their dressing from scratch (I had the privilege of watching from my table took quite some time and looked amazing so I asked what it was) and yes it's tasty! Best caesar in Columbia. My hubby had a burger with a fried egg and local bacon he claims it's the best he had ever had in Columbia. 44 canteen is a must try!!! My waitress was very unfriendly and I had very poor service. They charged my debit card twice for the food and said it was declined (it wasn't). So I was charged for twice my food plus cash that I had to use to then cover my meal. Went in to get reimbursed and left with nothing. Terrible place to go I would avoid it. read more

Much to my own disappointment, my faith in 44 Canteen in waning. I went back for another go-around with a group of friends the other night. Eh. No improvements. I paid $8-9 for a Farm Burger, another $5 for fries, and $13 for meatless nachos (extra charge for some toppings) only to get completely bare chips below the surface. Come on, you're not even trying here. When I brought it to the attention of our apathetic server, she offered a side of salsa verde and then charged us another $2 for it. Call me crazy, but the way I see it I should not being paying for you to fix the item you did not properly make. When all was said and done, I paid $15 for two-star nachos with no meat on them. Anyway, our server could not care less and that really sucks for 44 Canteen because quality service is important to a lot of patrons and, regardless, should be a restaurant standard. Have all the community tables and open kitchens you want, but nothing replaces quality service. Having said that, in fairness, I should mention 44's redeeming qualities (note the two stars). Beer prices and selection are on point and the atmosphere was interesting enough to invite me back a second time. If I come back for a third visit, it'll be for drinks before getting better service elsewhere. read more

The worst thing about this place is that you can smell food and oil in the restaurant in an extent that even when you get out of the place, all of your clothes smells like oil and meat and it's a very bad point about a restaurant. Also, we asked our server if they have potato chips and she brought us tortilla chips and when we said we've asked for potato chips, she said yeah this is potato chips!!! However, she brought us fries when she was convinced. I had a chicken cheese tostada and it was average. I don't think I would go back to this place again. read more

Really great atmosphere and beyond friendly staff. I sat at the bar next to a couple of guys I can only assume were regulars. The dishes looked unique so I put my fate in the hands of the bartender who recommended some kind of open chicken taco concept (wish I remembered what it was called). If you're on a diet, this probably won't be a place for you. Everything looked pretty heavy but it's worth the calories! It's nice to see this type of restaurant in downtown Columbia. A refreshing addition to the downtown dining and nightlife scene. I'm a big fan of their industrial/reclaimed decor, AND that they text you when your table is ready (who wants to stand in a cramped entryway waiting?). I've only eaten here once- we shared the nachos and I had the sweet potato tacos as my entree. I very much enjoyed the fresh flavors and inspired menu options. I've been in for drinks a few more times, and the prices are reasonable on food and beverages. Definitely give 44 Canteen a try if you're looking for a light meal before a night out, or a show at the Blue Note. read more

Fantastic food and great craft beer selection. A must for lunches the Nacho's are so great, taco's are so flavorful and amazing and the lunch tostada's are just out of this world. When you enter 44 Cantine, you might expect a genuine attempt at what it advertises itself to be, a sure-enough instance of a Southwestern-style canteen. I want so much to like the food. That is my repeated disappointment. As it happens, I know my way around Southwestern and Latin food, having lived in Phoenix for 8 years, also working as the restaurant reviewer for Arizona Food & Life Magazine while there, and having travelled in Mexico, Central and South America.I am also acquainted with the owner, who is a really great guy. I return to the restaurant because he is who he is. As for the place, so much promise in its potential - but here is a message to the kitchen: for all that is holy - LAY OFF THE SUGAR!!! The 'red sauce' or 'rojo' (as it is known out west) tastes as if it comes in a squirt bottle with a snow-laden log cabin on the label. The sickly sweetness of it positively destroys anything it touches. It is as if it is made for the palate of a toddler. Of course, if sweet is what you crave, then mush on. Otherwise, while the red sauce has solid foundations in chili flavors you might rightly expect, the breakfast-syrup sweetness drowns any attempt at authenticity. If its use were limited to a single dish or two, I would be willing to overlook it. The problem is that it lands on many of their dishes, making them ultra-sweet rather than savory. My experience is that savory is more of what we find in genuine Southwestern cooking - not an IHOP take on rojo - a revered staple of the cuisine. Add to that Bread & Butter pickles on burgers, and other crimes against adult tastes make me feel like I may never return. In general, good beer and atmosphere. Maybe one more chance . . . read more

Breakfast and brunch on weekend was incredible. I loved their sweet potato hash and the honey chicken biscuit. Food needed more seasoning, but once I added salt and pepper it was perfect. 44 canteen is a downtown gem! I've been a few times since the grand opening and left happy every time. Some favorites are the Cali steak sandwich, chicken chorizo tacos, shrimp scampi, kimchi burger, and stout chocolate cake. The shrimp scampi is my favorite since it has a spicy New Orleans twist! During brunch, we ordered the steak and huevos chilaquiles and the steak and egg torta. Everything is amazing on the menu and you can't go wrong with anything. The servers have been super helpful sharing their favorite menu items and recommendations. Highly recommend!! read more

Let me first off say that I love the food at 44 Canteen however their service is lackluster particularly the hostess. We where barely greeted hello and where told there was a 20 minute wait. When it was our turn she threw two menus on the table and walked away. Not asking if the table was ok or to enjoy our meal. It was a high top table and we would preferred another one and would of been happy to have waited longer till one was available.
