The mussels we ordered were a big bowl for only $10. You can't find that anywhere else in Rome. The crème caramel (flan) is the best I've ever had and I've had it a lot of places. The gnocchi, clams and mushroom meal had amazing flavor. The seafood (mussels, clams, and Spinach with these amazing thin middles had excellent flavoring. All of our meals were excellent. I found this little gem just by looking up restaurants near us. I could tell when we walked in that it was going to be great! I ordered the house white wine and it was nice. We had a starter of caprese, which was nice and fresh. I then moved on to my fave dish in this trip, the Roman style artichoke. This was a delicious one, being tender and I loved the herbs and oil. Husband had a minestrone soup that was warm and flavorful. Next I had the cacio e pepe, and he had the spaghetti alla ragu. They were both very tasty and had great presentation. read more

Bustling and busy with a party of 9- we ended the night paying for three extra dishes we didn't order. And since we don't know Italian, we went ahead and trusted what they were telling us. But looking at our bill- we got charged for the following but did not get: Mazzancolle alla Griglia (did not order and did not get). They also brought over Tonnarelli Allo Scoglio which we did not order but ate thinking it was part of our order. They came by and said it was a mistake and still charged us for that as well. I'd be very careful to look at your receipt and understand exactly what you're getting. We lost 41 euro. Granted we actually received one of the two dishes we were charged so it was "less of a loss". We won't be making this mistake again. Tourists especially be aware. Be firm with your server if something doesn't look right. We had let it go with the language barrier, but looking back, it felt dishonest. More.... Pasta dishes were ok, but the shrimp was not fresh or deveined. Spaghetti pomodoro e basilico tasted like they used canned tomatoes. Overall ambience seemed clean though. All pasta was al dente. Giving 2 stars is generous considering what happened. Service aside from the confusion seemed generally nice out of courtesy but not kind and there's a big difference. We definitely felt rushed since they probably wanted to keep turning tables. I was expecting more since we had read all the great reviews prior to booking. Just be careful with the bill to make sure you aren't getting swindled. read more

Very good food on the last night of our trip. We had the classic Roman artichoke, oysters, the grilled langoustine and shrimp plate, and the gnocchi with porcini and clams pasta. We also ordered the house white wine bottle at only €15! The star was definitely the grilled shrimp and langoustine. So plump and juicy, the meat was perfectly cooked. It is head-on and fully shelled, but that's the best way to eat it. The Roman artichoke was also outstanding-- it's normally one large artichoke steamed with lemon, garlic, and other spices before it's served on the plate. So tender and there was a generous amount of garlic flavour and lemon to lighten it up. So yummy. The oysters were a little too mild (not enough brine). The gnocchi were perfectly cooked with large chunks of porcini mushroom and tender clams, but it lost out to the other two dishes. However, a bite of gnocchi, clam, and porcini went perfectly together! Service was quick, and a bit more casual. Overall, still very nice and they topped off the evening with some complimentary limoncello. If you're in Rome, stop by this casual spot for some good artichokes and seafood! read more

Made a reservation with the manager the night before dining and he was really friendly. Even though it wasn't busy the following day he remembered us and our reservation without needing to remind him. You can tell the food is made with care here. Probably some of the best food I had during my 6 days in Rome. We also got bruschetta, but I was eager to eat and forgot to take a picture. After our hike to colosseum and a long day we walked to Monti, as our first choice restaurant Dei imperiali was closed we came here seeing a very homey nice environment. We were fortunate to be seated right away without a reservation and the place got very crowded pretty fast and is clearly an American favorite though we felt the service was sub par, slow as well the food was nothing to die for either, overall wasn't the long hike here. We ordered a fresh snapper that was deboned, a risotto, a eggplant parmigiana which wasn't even close to the American version, but rather no to little cheese and very chewy. Anchovies seemed fresh and the risotto was a good portion size though nothing outstanding. The tiramisu was probably the highlight of our meal as we were not quite impressed by the rave reviews this place had. read more

We popped in here for a late lunch yesterday. We were seated at a table outside, they had umbrellas up so the shade was quite comfortable. Service was efficient. We had a bottle of Pinot Grigio (20e); spaghetti alla carbonara and an Osso Buco. We find sharing a primi and a secondi is the right amount of food for the two of us. We were surrounded primarily by locals, so this seems a popular spot. The Osso Buco was good, but we had better at Gil. Still good tho and I'm fairly attached to the carbonara spaghetti now :). The restaurant obviously cooks for the American palate and large servings. Ordered simple pizza margherita, bucatini amatrciana, spaghetti al ragu, seafood risotto, and bruschetta. We tend to order these around Rome and most places have served a good meal. But this was the most disappointing. The pizza was tasteless, hard yet undercooked crust, burnt cheese, no taste in the sauce. Both pasta dishes looked like canned American spaghetti. Could not see nor taste the guanciale. The best we could say was the risotto was edible but not real creamy risotto. The Americans kept coming in saying they had reservations. No need to make reservations if you don't go there. read more

Wow. Just WOW! This was my first coherent meal of this trip and after a day of exploring Roma I was looking forward to a great meal and glass of wine. They did not disappoint. I did not photograph the inside of the menu but from what I could read, there's not a meal that would disappoint. The food was flavorful and very appealing to the eye. The pasta was so fresh, and while the meal was filling, I didn't feel heavy at all after. The service was quick and kind. We sat outside because the weather was great outside but they were certainly spreading folks apart inside. I really liked this place. We asked our hotel for a recommendation for dinner that was not touristy and this is where they sent us. Many restaurants in the area have employees standing outside trying to drag customers inside, but here you won't find any of that. La Taverna is located on a small side street off Via Nazionale. It doesn't look like much from the outside but don't let that stop you. It is decorated in an old world Italian style with old wood furniture and traditional yellow tablecloths. We were quickly greeted once inside and noticed we were the only tourists which is a good sign. Our server brought out bread and olive oil and we ordered some house wine which was delicious and inexpensive. We started off with the prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella which was excellent. The mozzarella was super fresh and went perfectly with the salty prosciutto. We also had a bowl of the minestrone soup. The soup was definitely home made with lots of fresh vegetables and pasta. The plates and bowls remind me of eating in an old Italian grandmothers house. I ordered the spaghetti carbonara which was the best I had anywhere in Italy. We finished off with a home made coconut gelato that they served in a coconut shell. It was full of coconut shavings and again was excellent. We were stuffed but when they brought our check they also brought us two shots of limoncello and biscotti which I couldn't turn down :) We were very happy with this place. This is the best restaurant in ROME! I came here off a recommendation from my mom and proceeded to come back every day of my trip for lunch. My first experience was sitting next to a man from japan who scheduled his layover just to make sure he could stop by and get food from this Restaurant. After spending a week eating here, I completely understand why. The hospitality and overall quality of the food was amazing. I didn't eat the same thing twice and everything that was brought out was mouthwateringly incredible. When I imagine Italy, this is the food I dream about. We ordered the bread (costs €1 per person), prosciutto with mozzarella, minestrone soup, lamb with potatoes, sea bream, broccoli, and spinach. DISAPPOINTINGLY TOURISTY. One might expect that restaurants in a touristy area might serve adequate meals and offer adequate service, as was the case here. In our 4-day tour of Rome, this was the first adequate place at which we ate. The other restaurants were above average and not at all touristy. The cheesy interior wall murals were disenchanting - something one might see in Los Angeles. There is nothing authentic about this place. After chatting up some of the other patrons, it was brought to light that boutique hotels in that area highly recommend this restaurant to their guests for dinner. A-ha! Now, I understand why it was so crowded. The pizza was overcooked to the point of not being able to bite into it and separate a piece to chew in one's mouth. The crust; like rubber. The ravioli was just...adequate. Unremarkable and without flavor. While friendly, the staff was eager for us to make our exit, as there were many other (unsuspecting) patrons vying for free tables.
