By far my favorite breakfast place in Suttons Bay. They have an amazing Morel omelette. This trip we ordered the GIANT breakfast burrito and the Irish Omelette. When they call it giant they mean it! I couldn't finish it! And the flavor was amazing and was the Best breakfast burrito I have had in a restaurant! My daughter loved the omelette and couldn't finish her plate either. Overall the food was great with large portions. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. They even have outdoor seating when it's warmer! We will be back! read more

This family owned and run place is a favorite of ours for both breakfast and lunch. My husband loves the Thompson, and I favor their yummy oatmeal, and blueberry pancakes. We have tried many different menu items - and have always been pleased with the homemade flavors -and huge portions! Their coffee is great too! We were happy to learn they were staying open to provide carry out food during the Covid Crisis. The two for one specials have been awesome - great value and great food! We loved the Greek gyros, and the waffles were stellar! I appreciate 45th's commitment to hygiene and cleanliness - especially during the pandemic. The restaurant is spotless, the servers wear masks and gloves, and I see them wiping everything down - even the door handles on the doors. If you want homemade food with quality ingredients, kind and capable service, and a safe dining experience - 45th Parallel is a great option! Check it out! Our family stopped in last Monday to have breakfast for the first time. We were hoping to find a place we could go to for breakfast during our weeklong stay in Sutton's Bay. I ordered an omelette and asked for gluten-free toast because I have celiac. The up-charge was $1, which seemed fair enough. When I received my food, the omelette was over cooked (more brown than yellow on the outside). I let it go because I was hungry and everyone (husband, two older sons) else's food had arrived. When I picked up the toast, it looked like they dipped it in a soybean oil. When I asked our server - tall brown haired kid - if I could get another piece because I could not each it (soy issue), he said he'd have to charge me another $1 because I didn't ask for dry toast and it was not their fault or issue. I then asked him to just take it off the bill. He refused. My husband politely then asked him to check with his manager to see if the toast could just be replaced. He proceeded to tell us that he would not check, and that he was one of the people in charge anyway. Sadly, the young server's need to have a sense of authority and argue, cost him his tip, as well as additional revenue for the owner. If we had had a positive experience, we would've returned to spend another $65 a few more times this week. read more

Estimated time to seating: 5-10 minutes. Actual time: 30. You know how it goes... you've put in 15 minutes, you gonna leave now? Host keeps promising 5 minute more. I always see so many cars outside so I thought I'd check the place out. I'm a little disappointed. The manager is brusque, not sure if he was having a bad day. He wasn't very friendly at all and directly turned me off. I ordered blueberry pancakes. They're big, but mediocre. Not worth the amount of money I paid for them. I signed up for yelp just to give this restaurant this review. Three of us put our name on the list to be sat outside for breakfast, and we were told it would be 15 minutes. 40 minutes later we were nowhere nearer to being sat. When a party of 5 came in after us and was seated before us, I went to inquire as to why we were waiting so long. The hostess told us that the party ahead of us had "called ahead", but it probably didn't hurt that we saw one of the members of the other party give the waitress some cash, and then were seated promptly. We left at that point and went somewhere with actual service and who were willing to seat us within the timeframe they quote without any added incentive. We went here on a whim as we were out wine tasting. As my wife jumped out to check the menu, a woman who was exiting took a couple of minutes to tell my wife how great the place was and even highlighted a couple menu items. Good sign. Even though they seem to be known for breakfast, they have a decent lunch menu as well. We were seated pretty quickly and waited on immediately. I ordered the tomato basil soup in a bread bowl and the BLT. My wife ordered the quesadilla. We were both impressed at how fresh everything was, and how everything seemed scratch made. Worst ownership I have ever experienced. The burger was terrible, I asked them to make a different one and they would not unless I paid for a new one. I only ate two bites. It was the worse mushroom Swiss burger with some strange beef gravy all over it. If it says mushroom and Swiss burger , they should not throw on cheap gravy, unless they want to call it the mushroom gravy and Swiss burger. If I order grilled cheese don't throw on chicken gravy. Best cafe on Leelanau Peninsula, hands down! Recently in the Suttons Bay area for an anniversary, we stopped in for a late breakfast. The Egg Nog pancakes, while they were as huge as your head, they were scrumptious! I highly recommend The Thompson; two scrambled eggs, jalepenos, tomatoes, peppers, and black forest ham covered with cheese. If your order includes toast, you must try the sourdough! I wish I could give it more stars because what I had for breakfast (the Thompson) was delicious, but I cannot. Needless to say, the service was less than outstanding. They would not let us sit outside because the few tables that were unoccupied needed to be saved for the larger parties. Fine. So we sat inside and ordered. It seemed to take awhile and when we did get our food, my husband had some nasty items on his bacon. He asked for some new pieces and it was virtually the same. At that point, we were more than fed up. Great food for me, terrible service. And to top it off, the young lady who took our money had an issue accepting our change because she already put it in the register. Amazing little breakfast spot in Sutton's Bay! The waitstaff is comprised of very warm and welcoming students, which is refreshing to see. Natalie, our server was very kind and attentive! My friend and I got the french toast with strawberries and chai lattes, it was not only speedy but delicious. Not even 5 minutes for soft Hawaiian bread french toast. Afterwards we stopped in the joint candy store and the owner Bridgette was a joy to talk to! We were delighted with the entire experience and left happy and full! Enjoyed a quick little lunch here today after plans to go sledding down a sand dune were thwarted. We walked in 30min before closing (winter hours) and they were happy to seat & feed us. I had a scrumptious french dip - meat was impressively flavored and the cheese fantastically oozy. Good au jus flavor too. The BF enjoyed an angus burger w/ cheddar, lettuce & pickles - it was gone before I even knew it existed. We recently stopped here with extended family for breakfast. The breakfast menu is extensive, with a lot of interesting choices like morel omelets -- good choices for vegetarians, too. A little spendy, but that's not unusual in the area. I had a tasty portobello/asiago omelet; I also had a taste of my granddaughter's blueberry pancakes and thought they were quite good for restaurant pancakes. The service was not as enjoyable as the food. The staff that morning was young, inexperienced and easily flustered, and it was obvious that our table of seven was too much for our deer-in-the-headlights teen waitress. Given that the Leelanau Peninsula is a foodie mecca of Michigan, I can't give it more than an average rating despite its better-than-average menu. If you want mildly elevated diner food, it's a good choice in the area, but I wouldn't recommend taking a large party there. read more

$18 for 2 Lattes!!! We came here for 2 Lattes in the morning based on a recommendation. The Latte that is priced $4.50 came to $18 (for 2). When we questioned the staff, they said that the extra shot and flavor costs more. (twice as much??). To top it off, the Lattes were not very good. We came up for a girls weekend and after having breakfast here our first day, returned every morning after. Every selection was amazing. My personal favorites were the omelettes. They are the best I've ever had. The bread is homemade. The juice is fresh squeezed. A lot of recipes come from within the family. The service was friendly, but also very efficient and fast. I had the same experience as other diner's with terrible service. I was sat in the sun at a two top. I asked for something in the shade, as there was an open 4 top. I was told there was a wait and I couldn't be sat there. Fine, acceptable reason. As I was leaving there were 2 people sat at that four top, despite there being a 2 top available. I asked why I was told there was a wait when there was not and why then a two top was sat at a four top when there was a 2 top available. I also asked why my coffee and water was never refilled. I was told very condescendingly, to "have a great day." It's funny to hear other's have had the same experience. Won't be back, won't recommend. A great breakfast joint with decent choices, and nothing that is going to knock your socks off, yet, somehow we love it and keep coming back. The coffee is terrible, so I recommend getting a latte over at Frida's across the street and bringing it in (if you are sitting outside). My hubby and I stopped here for lunch while wandering the shops of Sutton's Bay. He chose a chicken sandwich and I got a salad. We thought they'd be boring, same-old lunches. Little did we know... His sandwich came on freshly baked, griddle-toasted rye bread with giant slices of juicy chicken breast. This was the best accidental finds during my recent trip to Traverse City. We were looking for a good brunch place to visit before leaving town, and 45th Parallel was very much beyond our expectations. So many things on the menu looked so good, but I decided to go with the Bridgett's Quesadilla, and I have zero regrets. Here's the description - "Sautéed Portobello mushrooms, grilled chicken, onion, baby spinach and salsa. Served on flour tortilla, finished with fontinella and Monterey Jack cheese and sour cream with tortilla chips." You can't go wrong, and it didn't. They're not kidding about this being a meal. I couldn't even finish it. Everyone in my party that tried it admitted they were a little jealous. It had a good amount of all of the ingredients, they didn't skimp on anything. It was completely delightful and I would recommend it to anyone. The decor is very cozy and not stuffy. The best part of 45th Parallel is that it's connected to the Candy Store. It's brilliant. You go to the cafe and have an unbelievable meal, then you go into the Candy Store to buy all sorts of old style and new candies, chocolate, truffles, and fudge. You know, these days, there are a ton of good places to eat in Leelanau County - Mama Lu's, Jolly Pumpkin. That wasn't neccessarily the case 10 years ago when 45th Parallel Cafe was one of the only breakfast joints in the area, but it's time for a wake up call. The food was decent - not great, nothing special - but decent. Now let's talk about why this place gets one star: We get there at 11:10 AM for brunch today, a Thursday. We were told 10-15 minute wait for a table. Cool. We hung out in the candy shop. We got a table in about 10 minutes. That's where the wheels came off. We waited almost 10 minutes to be greeted by our server, a male who has worked there a long time and was obviously overwhelmed. He took our drink orders and after another 10 minutes, a young kid brought our drinks. 15-20 minutes in. The server unapologetically came and said 'What are we eating..." to which I regretably replied with our order. 48 MINUTES LATER we got our food. He did tell us 15 minutes before that about how the kitchen is behind, and I get that. Sometimes the kitchen gets behind. But it's all about how you handle it (with a visit by a manager). The food was decent, but I'm not really even sure. 1:22 after walking through the door I think I could have eaten anything. Not that it would have mattered - Our server never asked how the food tasted. We were geniunely curious as to whether we would receive a full bill, a discounted bill, or no bill as we waited way too long for the check. I'll admit, at this point, I was just pissed off and noticing more things that suck about the service here. He dropped off the check with no apology whatsoever and when he went to pick up payment I said, "Hey, I'm just curious - are you doing anything to take care of us after a 48 minute kitchen ticket?" Here is the response verbatim: "No, it just kind of is what it is... you know, it's a pretty busy cafe." "Really?" I said, "In my day if we couldn't handle the table we just went on a wait."
