Even before going to Denali, everyone and their mother who had been here recommended that we stop by 49th State Brewing. After eating and drinking here, I can see why. Although it was a cold and wet Alaskan night, inside was warm and comfy. We were seating pretty immediately even though it was packed, and our friend (who so graciously drove us here) recommended we try their Yak Burger. Usually I let my camera eat first, but the burger smelled so good, I ended up devouring it before I could even take a picture. One of the best burgers I've had in my life. The beers too were delicious. There's something for everyone here from light lagers to heavy stouts and even fruity ciders. You can't go wrong. Sounds like the majority of people have had a great experience but we are not a part of that group. We were seated at a high top and not a booth because we were a group of two. After 15 minutes of sitting with no service we moved to the bar. Strike 1. We ordered dinner at the bar. Diane ordered Alaskan Salmon and got Cod. Strike 2. They brought her Salmon and it was raw. The manager came by to apologize and even said, "we don't serve sushi here'" Strike 3. They brought her Salmon and again and as you can imagine, it was overcooked and dry. That went back and the manager once again apologized and said' "I need to teach these guys how to cook salmon." Strike 4. We tried to come her for dinner on Wednesday but the wait was so long we went elsewhere. We came earlier today and we were able to be seated in a reasonable time. I got the limited time endless summer soda to drink which was a mango pineapple flavor. I ordered the salmon which comes with couscous, veggies, and tzatziki sauce. The couscous and veggies were great but the salmon just wasn't very good and missed the mark. The food here is also pricey but not surprising for the location. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was disappointing from start to finish. After waiting for an hour and half, the service was painfully slow. Our waitress seemed completely overwhelmed and confused by even basic requests. We had to repeat ourselves multiple times, and simple things were still forgotten. When we spoke to the manager, hoping the situation would improve, it became clear there wasn't much more competence there either. Questions went unanswered and concerns were brushed aside. They did offer to bring the correct food but after being there 2+ hours we were done! As for the food, it was average at best--nothing terrible, but certainly nothing worth returning for. With mediocre food, poor service, and management that seemed just as lost as the staff I would find somewhere else to spend my money. read more

Was recommended 49th State Brewing by multiple people while planning our trip to Denali, so we made it happen! Right off the bat, this place was so much larger than we were expecting. Since it was toward the end of the season, it wasn't as crowded as we expected - but there were still a good amount of people. We ended up sitting at bar-style seating around a tall firepit. Super warm, comfortable, and probably best for parties of no more than 3. Food was phenomenal. Their Alaskan Sockeye Salmon Melt was incredible - never have I had anything like it, and I wish I lived close enough to eat it again. So much cheese that went perfectly with the fresh salmon. They also give you a side of chowder to dip it in. So full but so happy afterward. The Yak Burger and Buffalo Meatloaf were also big winners with our group. Love ciders, and they had some great local ciders. We ended up going to multiple 49th State locations during our visit, and the Denali location was, by far, our favorite. Just stick with the burgers and basics. Halibut was the worse I've had in Alaska. The place was crowded but I noticed a lot of uneaten food on plates. Burgers looked good and the beer is good. Stick with that and you'll be happier than I was. TVs couldn't put on the NHL Stanley Cup final game of the year on ABC. Not a big deal but nobody cared about Sweden and Tunisia playing soccer. read more

Wow this was a bad one all around. We arrived at 8pm on a Sunday. I was told the wait was about an hour. Ok no problem. I get a text exactly one hour later our table is ready. Starting with the hostess and ending with the wait staff: the front of the house staff is not very friendly and I felt like we were bothering them when we asked for something. I had to ask other servers to find our missing in action server a couple times and even the simplest requests like a different dressing on the salad "had to be run through our server" even though we requested the sub when we ordered and it came out with the original. The staff here is either very green and needs more training or just doesn't care. They were more concerned with cleaning up than taking care of their guests at the end of their shift at 10pm (which btw, closing time is listed as midnight so WTF?!?). On to the drinks/food: - The drinks (beer and hard cider) were good. Hard to mess that one up especially if you're a brewery. - Seafood chowder: Fishy - Bison meatloaf: Lean and dry AF. Even the sauce couldn't save it. - Green salad: A very generous portion and was fresh. - Spinach artichoke dip: OK, nothing to write home about. Was much better with the tortilla chips from the fish tacos than the pita bread it came with. - Halibut tacos: Unseasoned, flavorless and a bit dry. ......and drumroll.....add a 1 lb of Alaskan King Crab to any entree: SO SALTY. They roast this versus steam it here which also made it super stringy and dry. So not worth the additional WHOPPING price tag of $105! They ran out of mashed potatoes for the meatloaf and subbed it with fries. I asked for tartar sauce and they also apparently ran out. How you run out of condiments is beyond me. The only thing positive about this place was the decor: steampunk meets wilderness with an ode to the ocean. They offer a spacious outdoor area with fire pits and benches and some horseshoe games while you wait, since there are no reservations. This restaurant was close to our hotel, so we decided to give it a try. We liked it so much that we ended up going there again for another dinner. The first night was as busy as the second night, but we did have to wait an hour on the second night. I think they have staffing issues. They do have a great waiting area outside where they have games and seating. They also have a bar where you could order a beer or a drink while you wait. The first night, I got the Alaskan sockeye salmon. It was supposed to come on a bedof vegetables, but I was on vacation and decided I should get fries. The sockeye salmon portion was a good size. It did come on in bed of creamy lemon dressing. Without the creamy dressing, the salmon would have been lacking some flavor. It was perfectly cooked though . On my second night I had a Caesar salad with salmon.I feel like the salmon on the salad was definitely tastier. The salad was pretty big and it had a good amount of shaved Parmesan cheese. I did not taste any of the beer and I am definitely not a connoisseur when it comes to beers, so I wouldn't be able to tell you if they were good. They do have beer, Cocktails, wine, and their own brand of soda. They have inside and outside seating. The parking lot is pretty big, but you may have to do a little bit of walking to get to the entrance as it can get very full. Staff was friendly, but on our first night I think we got a new employee. He was trying his best, but he couldn't answer my questions and it did take him a while to come to our table and get our drinks. On our second night, the waitress was excellent. I can see why 49th State Brewing is so popular. With 3 locations to choose from, I stopped by the Denali location on our last night in the area and again their post security ANC airport location. While the traditional pub favorites like fish n chips and tacos both made with halibut and BLT with Alaskan salmon would normally be up my alley, this was the only meal we had that neither of us had salmon or halibut. I ordered their pound and a half of Bering Sea Red King Crab legs served with drawn butter. With the texture more reminiscent of lobster than the Dungeness Crab that I'm used to, it makes so much sense paired with drawn butter. Since I couldn't share my shellfish because of hubs intolerance, he ordered that locally raised Alaskan Yak Burger that he didn't have to share since I couldn't take a bite of after seeing his/her cousin in person at that Reindeer Farm just days before. A pint of their spruce tip draft Frontier Soda and an Adventurer's beer Flight of Nitro Mccarthy Stout, Smok Smoked Lager, Golden Dall Tripel, and my favorite Seward's Folly RIS hit the spot. What dropped it a star is I wish that expensive dinner was credited correctly to my 49th State Brewer's Circle account to go towards those halibut fish n chips and halibut tacos right before leaving at their Ted Steven's location. read more

We tried to stop here on the way from Fairbanks to Denali on Labor Day, but the parking lot was super packed and when I went inside there was a long wait. We decided we would try to come back another day since we had two more in the area. We returned two days later. The parking lot was so pot holed it was very hard to even drive through. I imagine they fix it every spring, but by the time the season is almost over the lot is very terrible. Be warned. I wish we would have parked farthest away and just walked. I really liked the ambiance of the brewery and the servers were friendly. I do not recommend coming two weeks before they close for the season. Every item we tried to order from the menu was out of stock. I really wish they would have marked out items that weren't available with a grease marker, rather than our server coming back from the kitchen each time and having us order something else. We ended up getting a pretzel, crab stuffed jalapeños, the blackened salmon BLT, and the halibut tacos. All of the food was really good. My salmon wasn't over cooked, and there were large pieces of halibut in the tacos. The pretzel was a good pretzel and the crab stuffed jalapeños were spicy and good. Another unfortunate thing was that their Untapped beer list said it was updated that day, but they were out of over half of the beers listed on Untapped, and every beer I tried to order off the actual menu was out as well. I could barely even order a flight because they were out of so much. Our server said that they weren't putting on any new kegs that day. As someone who has checked in over 4,000 different beers at over 160 different breweries, I was really looking forward to trying more. I understand that it was getting close to the end of season, but with a location in Anchorage and still having two weekends, I would have thought they would at least be putting on new kegs. I was very disappointed. We only went to Fairbanks and Denali, so I didn't really get to experience this brewery's beer or food. On the way out I also had to wait 15 minutes to buy merch because the manager was having a little front of the house staff meeting and they wouldn't check me out until they were done and he could sign the merch employee into the computer in the merch area. Overall, we had a pretty good experience here. The ambiance and service were exceptional, however we were left slightly disappointed with the food. When we first arrived we were told that it would be an hour+ wait but luckily there is open seating at the bar and we found seats in no time. Our bartender/server Dinko was AMAZING. Extremely attentive and actually this old man beside us was bothering us, Dinko realized and despite getting called a spew of slurs Dinko remained professional. HUGE props to him for that. Despite the amazing service, we unfortunately received our food cold and we were starving and it was already 8pm so we just decided not to say anything and just eat. My friend and I concluded if the food was warm we would probably have given it 5 stars. However since the food was 50% off (it was the last day of the season) we didn't really complain, but on a normal day... I do not think this salmon would be worth $40. Flavor wise-- the "mexican street corn" is not traditional street corn and it was just okay. Our entrees flavor wise were still very good, I can only imagine how good it would be if the food was hot. Last but not least the drinks and atmosphere were amazing! I got the cider and my friend got a flight and there's fires outside and the vibes were great! Crab chowder to dip and fries on the side. Bacon Wrapped Bison Meatloaf ($25.49) - bison has a tendency to be bit dry, and so this was. Huge fan of 49th State Brewing ever since I moved to Anchorage so I was so excited to stop by the Healy location since it was the first one. Unfortunately, I was left so disappointed by my entire experience at this location. While it wasn't very busy, we were seated after a short wait. We ordered some drinks, wings, a yak burger, and a steak salad. We got our drinks sans water and the wings pretty quickly which we appreciated. However, it took an hour to get our burger and salad. Other tables who came in after us for their appetizers and main entrees so I was pretty confused as to why it took so long. When our food did come out, the burger did not have the pretzel bun, just a regular bun that fell apart almost immediately and for $30, it was not at all worth it. My steak for my salad was burnt and the salad had way too much dressing. Really disappointed with this location and I hope it's a one off since I loved going to the Anchorage location. read more

We were camping in Denali Village for a couple of nights, and had been to my personal best restaurant there the night before, so i searched Yelp for something suitable for the 2nd night dining. 49th State Brewing got 4.3 stars so i thought it was acceptable. Anyway, the weather was pathetic and raining heavily, so no one was dining outside this (Friday) evening. That means of course there's a huge crowd in the dining room, and we were told there was a 45 minute wait for a table. I asked if bar seating was available, and it was, so we sat there. Th dining room itself is fairly nice, but of course being at the bar means you don't see too much of it, and all i could see were taps and bottles and a wall lined with birch trees. Ok then. I must say that the bar seating is cramped, and my elbows were hitting the person next to me a lot. I ordered a chicken bowl of some kind, and husband got a half rack of ribs. I got Strawberry Thyme lemonade, he got an IPA of some kind, i don't know, i don't drink alcohol. Food came out in due course, it was ok, chicken was tender, and whatever else was in the bowl was ok too. Nothing special, not bad, but not memorable either. He said his ribs were ok, but i saw the meat was falling off the bone, and good and juicy, which is my kind of rib. Service was prompt, and i got to see a lot of alcohol-based action - cocktails being mixed, flights being prepared, too foamy pours being discarded - quite busy behind the bar. I think had i been able to sit at a table and have some room, and not feel cramped, I'd have given 4 stars instead of 3. Additionally, this is one of the 3 places i was at, during our stay (Moose-AKa's, Denali Park Cafe, being the other 2) where i may have caught Covid which descended upon me the day i got home. This however, was by far the closest proximity I'd been to other people. I was informed by the doc there's a new variant going around that's highly contagious. I do think there needs to be more space between the bar stools for this reason. read more

While in Denali, eat all your dinners here. I wish we had. This review will be very similar to our review of 49th state brewing in Anchorage, a couple of small adjustments. Good selection of vegan/vegetarian options, service was decent, and as you would expect, great beer. We had the "Herbivore Vegan Burger" and vegan Mac & Cheese. The vegan burger was outstanding, the Mac & Cheese less so. The vegan burger was one of the best I've ever tasted with a mix of flavors that were a joy to eat...horseradish pickles, vegan cheddar that rivaled 'real' cheese, and a pattie built with 3 types of mushrooms and sweet corn. All vegan burgers should be so tasty. It puts to shame the vegetarian/vegan burgers you find at almost any restaurant, much less a brew pub. The Mac & Cheese was just ok. Strangely it was almost dry, not the creamy concoction we are used to. Would not order again. A bonus here in Healy is the prop bus from the "Into the Wild" movie; you can enter the bus for pictures and try to imagine living in the bus in the Alaska Wilderness. I really wanted to like 49th State Brewing in Denali but left extremely disappointed. I visited during a recent trip to Denali and thought the building and atmosphere were great! They have a replica of the "Into the Wild" bus. There's also a large seating area outside for the nice days. The menu is fantastic and has a ton of options! We started with the Handmade Bavarian Pretzel which was served with beer cheese. It was awesome! My main dish was a bacon cheeseburger. On first glance, it looked amazing but, it was not. The patty was like a hockey puck...hard, burnt and dry. The other person in our group who had the burger had theirs cooked the same way. Another friend ordered the Mac and Cheese and it was completely tasteless with nearly no cheese. It was very disappointing! The service was mediocre but the woman working in the gift shop was great! The only reason 49th State Brewery came in at 2 stars, instead of 1, was the pretzels and cheese! I was very disappointed by my experience! read more

We debated about making the trek up Alaska3 to Healy, as we are staying south of the Denali park entrance. Glad we didn't debate long - a delish oasis with amazing refreshment, the best caramel corn in the world, terrific comfort food, and friendly service - especially the amazing Leah from OshKosh and Cam behind the bar! As we waited for our table to open, we were graciously served a flight of 49th State beverages, helpfully curated by Bartender Cam, who was patient to give us an overview and allow us to pick our flight. Table opened and we closed out, moving to the amazing Leah, who walked us through the menu and a few favorites. TONS to choose from. We enjoyed a Bavarian pretzel (consumed faster than my photo shutter would operate), incredible dry rub wings and the crab-grilled cheese. Googled places to eat in Healy and 49th state seemed interesting. We did a 5:30 reservation for dinner and cut Denali National Park time to make. I ordered the seafood chowder and it arrived lukewarm. See photo. Also ordered the famous Yak burger. This in theory was delicious and moist, but it has the wrong bun on it. It has a really thick pretzel bun that isn't even toasted. I took off the bottom bun so I could bite into it. Then just ate it without the top bun. Word of advice, use the burger buns instead. I was able to order without onions. The sliced tomatoes were pale, grocery store quality. I asked about the popcorn. What I found strange was it was $3.99 a basket, $6 a bag at the store, and free at the bar. It is not fair to paying customers in the dining room. Took pictures and went inside the Into the Wild bus. Warm atmosphere, menu with something for everyone, and get the crab legs! We went early for dinner during the week (a bit before 5, after a day at the park), and it didn't start getting busy until 6 or so. We were seated around a fire area and I loved that! It was warm but not uncomfortable, and was just fun! The rest of the place is also decorated with care. I got the snow crab dinner and it was outstanding! We waited a long time for food to come out and at least 3 different staff apologized for the wait. But 1) we were by the lovely fire, and 2) we got the Bavarian pretzel appetizer that was huge and delicious, so waiting was not bad. The crab was absolutely worth the wait, and I enjoyed every moment. The veggies that came with it were odd (chopped so small I couldn't really tell what it was), but I didn't care too much. We were just recently in Denali for a few days and at here 3 times. It's modern and rustic at the same time. Large menu and great beer selection that they brew themselves. Outdoor area has cornhole, darts and a firepit, plus a bar. My favorite was the nachos-huge serving. Also, I had the Yum Yum chicken bowl and others had the buffalo meatloaf and Yak burger. I didn't care for the Mt. Magnificent burger. It has smashed potatoes on the bun which is really just mashed potatoes and made the bun soggy. I gave them a 4 instead of a 5 because one night we ate at the bar and the bartender said she had to swipe my card before we ate. (???). Another night, a different waitress said she had to hold the credit card machine as I paid stating "People walk away with them". Very awkward way to pay with her holding it. read more

It's hard not to have your breath taken away by the beauty that is Denali National Park. 49th State Brewing felt like we were locals in a place where I'm sure there are not many. Just outside of the park in Healy is this lovely brewery. It has the, dare I say, iconic van from Into the Wild. This is the van from the film, as the real van resides at Fairbanks University. If you haven't read the book or seen book, I recommend. It's a true story about adventure, life's meaning and priorities, to say the very least. To see the van in person was a treat for me as I'm quite a fan of the story, despite it's tragic outcome. The beer here is good, nothing too out of the box, but it just feels more special in a place like this. We tried the Yak-a-dilla for the hell of it and it was yummy! Unique and not something you can get just anywhere. If you're staying in Denali National Park, make sure to stop by 49th State Brewing! read more

We were doing the Tundra Wilderness Tour at Denali National Park so decided to come for breakfast.We were taken care of by our server Zach (I think) and he was amazing. He even planned our ordering to eating schedule so that we reach the tour bus on time. Happy with this experience we decided to come back for dinner.We reached the place around 9 PM. Our server was very rude from the start and kept hurrying us in a very harassing way. Her name was Dana. Please beware if she waits on you. Please ask for a server change.Our appetizers did not even come and she wanted us to order the main course. When we were ready to order the main course in the middle of placing the order she realizes that it was after 10 and we could only order from an after 10 PM menu. She forgot to tell us beforehand and started blaming it on us with a very aggressive body language shrugging her shoulders saying,"this is why she kept on asking for us to order main course." When we told her she needed to mention it to us and we would have ordered before 10 PM. She said that we need to talk to the manager which we were fine with. Then she didn't bring the manager throws the menus at our face and says you can get what you want. How could we??? She spoiled the whole evening.As a tourist this was our worst experience while everyone in Alaska is so friendly. We asked to still talk to the manager as we already lost our appetite and moods. The manager Sam was amazing. He took control of the situation and was very understanding and helpful. Before we left the place he made sure we were not angry anymore. He also convinced us to come for breakfast and he will make our experiences wonderful but since we were running late we couldn't come. We did ended our trip at the airport 49th State brewing. Our server Catheryn was wonderful and very entertaining. We were happy there too. Experience always matters. Got four words for you: King Crabby Grilled Cheese. 49th State is one of the hottest spots in Healy, right off the main road with ample parking, moody lighting, and grand interior decoration. Had to stop here after a day of hiking to try the local eats and drinks. Please note they add a 1.9% service charge, which may put some off as a matter of principle. I made a reservation ahead of time, and good thing because this place was packed on a Sunday night. We were seated at a nice high top near the front. Our server Gina was great, she answered questions and was always around. - King Crabby Grilled Cheese ($22.49) - The star of the show! A generous amount of crab meat packed into a thick, melty, sinful grilled cheese sandwich. I couldn't believe the flavors when I bit into this sourdough melt. On top of that, you get battered fries AND a rich seafood chowder! One of the best flavor and value dishes during our entire Alaska stay. - Alaska Wild King Salmon ($36.99) - Gotta try the king salmon in Alaska, right? While the salmon was flavorful, it was just a bit over and dry. The mixed rice was tasty but also quite dry. The vegetables were okay. The lemon cream sauce was the flavor saviour. I would probably try something else next time. -Frontier Soda Flight ($6.99) - Fun little soda flight with in-house soft drinks and an amazing smoky, spicy caramel corn. Flavors: Wild Blueberry Cream, Root Beer, Cola, Spruce Tip. The Blueberry and Spruce were sweet and creamy, the cola and root beer had some new nice spice. - Adventurer Flight ($10) - Great price for a little tasting. It's supposed to be: Nitro McCarthy Stout, Golden Dall, Smok, Seward's Folly. Unfortunately, they were out of the Seward's Folly, which is the one I was most interested in from the flight. Strangely, our server swapped it with the Oaked Oktoberfest without even letting me know that the former was out. I had to ask her specifically. This isn't the first time I had a substitution without consultation in Alaska, so I'm not sure if it's a regional/cultural thing to do so without asking. In any case, each of the beers were...good. The flight was a nice variety of styles, but I've had better for each style. None of the beers made me want to take one home to friends and family. Great to have a fresh drink but that's about all. The inside is beautiful, the service is great, and the food was good. The location is right in the heart of Healy, and I'd definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area. read more

Came here during our first night staying for a trip to Denali NP. This place is pretty big and a popular spot for those staying in the area. They offer regular table seating and seating around a fireplace. We opted for the fireplace seating which was really nice given it was a bit chilly outside and it gave our experience a cozy feeling. Our waiter was friendly and attentitive. Menu was pretty expansive - they have burgers, flatbreads, and other brewery like dishes. I decided to get the baked mac and cheese, my partner got the vegan burger, and we split an appetizer of mexican street corn. Overall, food was your average pub/brewery food. Although the pretzel bun was nice on the burger. I was hoping my mac and cheese was a bit more baked with breadcrumbs and more seasonings. I also didn't realize it had meat in it - I had originally thought this was an extra to add but I'm also not strictly vegetarian so it wasn't a huge problem but I do feel like this would have been an issue for others if they were strictly not able to eat meat. The mexican street corn dish was pretty big for an appetizer with chips on the side to dip with. Overall, a solid place to get your typical american pub dinner. read more

Lively crowd, good food, and fun vibes! Was super happy to find such a great restaurant in the middle of Healy. I had to take the obligatory pic in front of the magic bus when we first arrived. My sons has the Mt. Magnificent and Yak burgers, I had the Parmesan & Asiago crusted halibut. We also shared the smoked wings and the Alaska 8 star Lager Loaf. For dessert we had the triple chocolate mousse pie and the fried cheesecake. We all loved everything we tried. The loaf was soft and warm inside and crusty outside. The wings had a really nice spice. My kids loved their burgers (they were AK sized - HUGE!) and my halibut was so tasty and had a nice crispy crust and cooked perfectly. Desserts were delish as well, although the triple chocolate pie was heavy on the cream on the top layer for my personal taste. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order here. I didn't try any of their brews but I'm sure beer lovers would enjoy it. If you are by Healy, you should stop by and try it. There is also a location in Anchorage, but I think the environment here is more unique - there's a stage for their events like Augustoberfest and of course the Magic Bus. Enjoy! read more
