You have to climb a hill every time you go to the parking lot. The elevator didn't work during my trip, and judging by the reviews before my own, it probably won't work for you, either. You might have to climb 3 flights of stairs every time you need to go to your room. Yes, the air is thinner--this is about the same elevation as Prescott, or Denver. If you can brave these conditions, you will be rewarded! The atmosphere is as good as it gets, and you really feel like you've been sent back in time. There are so many cool, communal areas--a bar on the first floor, a lounge with a working piano on the second. You'll even find a balcony with some seating and one of the best views in town. It's in the center of downtown, and walking distance from almost anywhere around here you'd want to go. Not to say there isn't any room for improvement. The weather is splendid most of the year, I'm sure, but this uniquely scorching summer overpowered their antiquated AC in the middle of the day. I don't like the old-timey bathtub with the 360 curtain, but I have to admit that it looks cool. There's room for some sort of shelf in the bathroom, but I guess they never got around to that. The inconveniences are forgivable, and if you don't dwell on them so much it really helps immerse you into a sense of rugged Southwestern history.

The hostility we felt at check in, the apathy ...the lack of welcoming we experienced was unlike anywhere else I've ever been. Not ONCE were we made to feel welcome. So we left and were told we would not receive a refund for the 2nd night that we did not use- Stay away from this place!

The area had a hard rain storm earlier in the morning and it was cooler than usual for July. The AC was on, which made it a tad chilly for us, but the dogs were happy.

This place has been the site of numerous movies and is an active location for westerns even now....with 5 westerns on tap to come and film in the near future. If you love antiques you will absolutely adore The Gulch. And Jay can tell you the history of each and every piece. He's got several antique cars, old mining equipment and lots of movie memorabilia. And you can take all the time you want to take photographs and just relax in the beautiful high desert. There are no horses to ride here....no food or drinks for sale....just good old fashion visiting and hanging out on a real movie set. (There IS some root beer to drink if you get real thirsty.) Jay's father was John Wayne's security guard and even Jay himself has been featured in a few movies...including one with John Wayne. Part of his tour is telling you about these famous stars he has met and worked with. That's a real treat. Gammons Gulch is open September through May from 9 to 4. From June to August, you need to call and let him know you're coming. He might be in Benson at the Walmart. And it does get pretty hot here in the summer. That's why Jay suggests calling no matter what day you plan on coming. If you love movies and western towns, put Gammons Gulch on your "to visit" list. Oh, and while you're here, drop in and visit the donkey rescue sanctuary right next door. They need a phone call, too, but it is well worth the visit!

The management is there to attend to your needs, there is a kitchen with everything you require at your fingertips, microwave, coffee maker with fixings, wine glasses and corkscrew in the room - a lifesaver since ours broke. Walk out the door and explore the town, book a reservation in advance at the Queen Mine and visit the Mining Museum and learn the history of copper mining. Having the opportunity to regularly stay over many accommodations across and occasionally outside the country, not a professional hotel reviewer by any means, and not a regular business traveler - but as a primarily pleasure and needs wanderer, I have developed as what I believe is my concise method for scoring the worthiness of each hotel visited. My criteria are as follows and the results are: 1) ease of access to and from public or private ground transportation [Score: 4.0]; 2) convenient and safe parking [Score : 4.0]; 3) access, accuracy and convenience of check in and check out [Score: 3.5]; 4) atmosphere, ambience, public facilities, lounging areas and access to an office center and Wi-Fi access [Score: 3.5]; 5) overall customer service - including but not limited to Hospitality, Support Services, Concierge knowledge, communication, attitude and demeanor of staff [Score: 2.0]; 6) quality, cleanliness, value, convenience, amenities (i.e., ironing board, iron, TV, charging access, phone, et.al.) and comfort of rooms, beds, room safe and/or valet services [Score: 3.5]; Taking all the aforementioned categories in a scale of 1 star to 5 stars with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best a hotel can be! This hotel rates a: 3.0. Most positive point(s) at this hotel is/are: the history and owner effort to maintain it heritage while making it comfortable to today's standards. My price to value to overall assessment: pretty good. The most negative aspects... A major caveat for making overall comparisons is the age of the hotel. In spite of an incredible amount of effort in modernizing, it holds some issues especially for anyone with mobility issues. It long staircases and the hilly environment surrounding the hotel should be a forethought rather than an afterthought in staying at the Hotel Warner.
