We went on a warm Saturday night. It got a little cramped inside but we were able to find some seating in the backyard. Aside from one of the employees constantly reminding us to lower our voices, the backyard was fantastic. The normal brew prices were understandable due to the impressive selection of drafts, bottles and cask ales. And, of course, they had free popcorn. However, the real draw for me was the tin of Old Bay that was sitting on top of the popcorn machine. Popcorn + Old Bay = Top notch! A-OK review for this reason alone. read more

love you, 4th ave pub. :) all the bartenders are cool, friendly, and knowledgeable when it comes to the many micro brews they offer on tap (which are constantly rotating). they never hesitate to give you a free taste of anything you're curious about. free popcorn (w/ old bay!) and nice outdoor seating when the weather's nice (though watch for mosquitos). always good to catch a happy hour, save a buck or two. and if you're a regular (which doesn't take as much of a commitment as you think), they will always respect the buy-back. music can be hit or miss, depending on whose ipod's on. don't show up if you want to watch sports - they play IFC network non-stop (which can be great or just the opposite). sure, it might get crowded once and a while (especially nowadays with barclay center in the mix), but it's usually not too packed for too long. great for dates or group outings - or alone and want to blow off some steam with the bar staff. solid spot. read more

Last visit (current visit) has included a dog with a glass eye and a breastfeeding woman on the way to the patio. Must say that this only added to the character of this friendly bar with a great beer (and fairly good bourbon and scotch) selection, a friendly bartender, an inviting patio with hanging plants, park benches of old, and where trees provide cover from the sun during the day. Not a frequenter, however, they make the BEST SANGRIA ON EARTH. It is really really really good. And, when I am there, I like to sip on one in the garden. The bar itself is generally pleasant too (a low key, darkish interior) and the bartenders are super friendly and nice to me even though I'm of the boring and undesirable middle-aged-lady ilk. I live in the area and was looking for a cool after work watering hole. I used to go to Black Sheep Pub on Bergen (it's pretty small) and I tried Cherry Tree which I found pretentious then I found the little slice of heaven known as the 4Th Avenue pub. They have a great selection of beer on the tap. The owner/ bartender is very sweet and when it's not wall to wall he'll have a nice conversation. A genuine conversation not just the usual sports talk or "nice weather we're havin" stuff. The other bartenders are just as nice and they can mix a pretty good drink. I like the seating I'm partial to the Pac Man table!! And the idea of making the bathroom walls chalkboards and putting a little bucket of chalk there is genius (Warning I take extra long in the bathroom, I need to think of something funny to write on the wall!). There's a nice music selection on the jukebox and the game is usually playing if you wanna see it. And the backyard is a big plus for the times it gets crowded or you wanna smoke. Bottom line is at the end of a bad day of work or if you just want to unwind and relax, this is the place to go! read more

Went here for happy hour last night. Can't comment on the huge crowds, it was nice and quiet when we were there, but this could be factor of the time that we were there. Excellent beer selection at very reasonable prices ($5-7), and the bartender was great and let us taste several beers beforehand to decide what we wanted. This is a feature sorely lacking at many beer bars, and it was much appreciated. The free popcorn is nice to munch on too. Not a lot of atmosphere here, but was very laid back and relaxed, and is a great neighborhood-style beer pub. Will definitely return. read more

yeah for free popcorn with old bay! once watched the bar back come up with the most tasty-looking popcorn dressing i've ever seen deployed inside the confines of a bar- lime juice, salt, old bay and hot sauce, but in very particular amounts with meticulous application. this place is just a good place to be. great bartenders and good prices. always a good movie on. why is it when i watch IFC at home, the movies are never this interesting? read more

Fun place! Great for both after work and weekends. We did New Year's Eve there and had a ton of fun. They have lots of beers on tap, and the bartenders are knowledgeable about beers without being snooty. And they have fresh made popcorn! read more

They have a back patio that's nice in the warmer months, but there's generally enough space to sit inside if you prefer. Had a pretty good experience... Until the bartender decided to tell us that we did not tip him enough. As a bartender myself, I am appalled by the arrogance that he had to say this. Experience: 3 out of 5. Service: 1 out of 5. Just a heads up: don't tell your guests that they tip poorly, when they've been tipping at least 15% on every drink (and much more than that when I payed our tabs). Tentative 4-star, but the beer selection won me over. Lots of good brews from all over, including my home-state, MI. I missed out on this apparently infamous popcorn that everyone is talking about, and for that, I'm a little sad. Courtyard in back is nice and cozy. My biggest complaint was the bartender. He seemed cold, unhelpful, and seemed generally bored with life. I get that everyone has their days, and maybe this was just not his, but he could've been a little(or a lot) more helpful when it came to knowing about the beers or other local places. All in all, I would probably come here again, just hope someone else was working. read more

My first visit to Brooklyn and the 4th Avenue Pub left me with a great impression - for the most part! (Don't talk politics or talk AT ALL to drunk patrons at 1am...but that wasn't the Bar's fault). Really friendly bartenders, cool atmosphere and free popcorn. Importantly they have an excellent, varied selection of beers, from local (Brooklyn Brewery) to far-reaching (Staropramen, Czech Republic). Variety of beer styles was also excellent, and the Bartender was able to make suggestions based on our preferences. Also he let us sample the beer before committing to a full glass. Reasonably priced at $5-6 most drinks. Also chalkboards make up the Bathroom walls, so you can graffiti away to your heart's content! Will be back on my next visit to Brooklyn. read more

4th Ave Pub has a good selection of beer both on tap and in bottles. The bartenders are always friendly with the pours. One of the biggest perks is a great back yard with tables for groups. They also have free popcorn available. It's just a solid bar experience all around. read more

I had an unfortunate experience with Jason, the bartender at 4th Ave Pub on Saturday afternoon, Feb 21st at their west coast beach party featuring Green Flash/Alpine brewing. I'm a long-time customer of this place, although it was my first time there in a while and I had not run into this particular bartender before. I asked Jason if I could get a half-pint of an Alpine beer (as I had never tried this particular brewery, I planned to try several of their offerings and didn't want to spend too much alcohol content/calories on a single beer). Very dismissively, he told me they don't serve half-pints, despite the fact that Id been served short pints at this place many times before. He even went so far as telling me some beers come in 12oz pours instead of 16oz ,as if it was my first time in a bar and I was a confused neophyte. Regrettably, I stayed, only because I wanted to taste this brewery's debut in NYC. Here's the kicker: Some time later, another patron asked for and was served a half-pint of a beer. I couldn't help but notice and laugh, and point out to Jason the bartender: "so you do serve half pints after all." His response: "Well she works for the brewery, so don't give me a hard time." Gotcha, Jason, I now understand, industry people are worth more than regular customers. Thanks for making that crystal clear. I've learned my lesson. The lesson is: I will never set foot in this establishment again. I'll make room for the important folk and lying bartenders. read more
