This place is pretty cool! I stopped by to grab a bagel sandwich and left with donuts, treats, and coffee. The shop it is self it pretty cute, colorful and simple with nice decorations. I love all the seating they offer. When I came into the shop you can see the cream cheese displayed like ice cream is in a ice cream shop and I love they made that product front and center. The menus are large and very easy to read. I ordered The Bronx which is a plain bagel with Sriracha Bacon cream cheese, roast beef, peperonicini, lettuce and tomato. No only was it super filling but it so tasty! That cream cheese was the highlight of the whole sandwich and I want a whole tub of it to take home! I also grabbed a coffee since they have so many flavors to pick from, I ended up having a iced coffee with mocha and mashmellow syrup. Amazing! I also picked up some crullers and sweet middles for my coworkers and which they raved about! I plan on coming back try their other specialty bagel creations such as the The Queens which features chocolate cream cheese and banana slices! It's a decent place, especially for West Des Moines. The atmosphere is great, very chic and "hipster". The bagels were of pretty good quality. However, the coveted Salmon Lox bagel left more to be desired. Perhaps my preference is a bit off after eating plenty of similar sandwiches in Ukraine, but the quality of the lox was... alright. I expected a place with such high reviews to have high quality lox. I also tried the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese on an everything bagel. It was good, but also comparable to what Dunkin' Donuts serves. We had stopped before and bagels were pretty good, so figured we'd stop again. This time we placed an order to go. I arrived 5 minutes after the pickup time and assumed my food and drinks would be ready. They were not. I was told the order got recalled and wasn't made, but it would be now. So I waited an additional 7 minutes for a young girl to make my food. I then asked about my drinks in which I was told they were backed up too. I was told it'd be another 7 minutes for those. At this point, I was wondering why I placed a mobile order in advance to wait an additional 20 mins in the store? I finally received my coffees which she had to scrape the whip off my husband's drink because we requested no whip and she initially missed it. After we took a few bites of our food, we realized they were not as good as New York's bagels and they were cold in temperature which isn't food safe with sausage and egg on them. The inside is very cool and modern and we got good service when we went here. I got a bagel sandwich, the Manhattan, cream cheese was very flavorful and everything tasted great together. We also tried to order the Brooklyn, but they were out of chicken, how do you run out of something simple like chicken(HyVee across the street almost). My wife had got this sandwich before and loved it, but not this time, kind of disappointing. I also had to get a black and white cookie here(very good and reminded me of being in New York) and we got a peanut butter chocolate bar too(good too). 5 Boroughs has some tasty options here and is a nice place for a breakfast/lunch stop. The hand made coffees are scrumptious, and we love the black and white cookies if there are any left when you get there. A lovely local place in the land of chain establishments (i.e. the West side). The food here is wonderful. It's fresh--one taste and you can just tell. The bagels are soft and yummy! I've also had a salad (I don't remember what it's called) that tasted like I made it myself (which is a good thing! It was fresh and made with quality ingredients.) So, I'm a bagel snob. I admit it. This place just blew me away. The couple who own it are from Queens, and it shows. This is most definitely New York style, boiled and baked bagels, and they stand on their own without any additions. Toothsome outside, great chew inside, and the CREAM CHEESE. It's obviously hand made in house. The Siracha bacon is more toward the bacon side with a bit of kick at the end. The Cucumber dill tastes like good Greek Tzatziki made with cream cheese instead of Greek yogurt. The only reason I didn't include pictures is because I devoured it. Visiting the city looking to relocate, the owner was phenominal. The staff very friendly and sweet. The Lox deluxe was the best I've had anywhere restaurant wise. The pepperjack bagel was phenomenal perfectly toasted made by hand, the cream cheese also by hand was so creamy and delicious. The coffee is a house specialty as well. Better than chain brands. Matt and I went here for lunch today. The bagels were soft and chewy. I had a breakfast sandwich on a cheddar bagel and Matt had The Queens sandwich. He said he could eat 6 of them, they were so good! I did not like a few things, though; their beverages are shoved in a small corner case, chips are in the middle of the front of the store and their menu boards kept going blank. They did not have many bagels to choose from (no plain) by the time we got there around noon. Also, when I went to pay, the girl slid my card and a screen came up asking for a tip. Is this a new thing? The tip screen started at 15%. Am I going to now be asked to leave a tip at BK or McDs? No one actually came to our table to take our order or clean our garbage when we were done eating. I don't get it. I would eat there again if I was out that way (which I never am). Holy crap. At first I was skeptical that they claim to be anything like NYC. BUT THEY LITERALLY ARE!!!! This brought me so much joy and a little piece of my home to my stay here in snowy blizzard filled Iowa. The bagels were exactly like New York style bagels. From the bagel itself to the many options of cream cheese. To even the NYC famous black and white cookies. I have been to nearly every bagel shop in NYC (don't judge) and I can proudly say that this place is at the top of my favorite bagel shops! But like...of all time.
