First things first, Jose was great to work with on this project. I emailed him a lot asking a lot of questions regarding the install, pricing, time, etc, and he was super patient and courteous when answering everything. His respond time was great, all within an hour or within the day. I asked him and his team to install a Cobb Stage 2 Redline Kit for me and a AOS (Air Oil Separator). Every shop I asked said they would take 2 days to do the install, which I understood, since the AOS is quite the install. But during the install, Jose let me know that they would be able to do both within the day. That was great news to me, since my WRX is my only car. The work was really clean. They took the proper precautions to protect your car during the install. By request, they saved all the old parts for me since i requested it, with which they helped pack back into the boxes that came with the Stage 2 Kit. The communication during the install was also great, they would message me during the install and sent photos as well. Also as a plus if you like dogs, they have the friendliest dogs chilling there. Their dogs just wanted all the pets lol. I've been driving the car for almost a week at the time of this review, and haven't run into any problems. I came here for an overdue timing belt replacement. While my car was in the shop, they noticed that my radiator was leaking and needing some parts replaced. Jose called me to let me know and went over the full estimate on the phone and sent me pictures of what he was referring to/what needed to be replaced, and that while he needed to order a part, he would be able to get my car done in the same day. When I picked up my car, he went over what was done as well. I appreciate the communication and service I received here very much! Was looking for a shop around SJ area to work on my 22 WRX to install a short shifter kit and catback exhaust. As you know around the Bay Area there is a lot of performance shop but so many shop is asking crazy price to get them install. Found 5 J's and was talking to Jose and he gave me a great price so I got them to install the short shifter kit and exhaust. Yes me and my friends could install these stuff but as you get older you get very lazy to work on your car on jack stand. So it was nice to find a place with great price to work on your car. I am attempting to contact this business. Sold me a battery and installed it last December. 12/11/23 thereabouts. I actually was in need of major engine work and ended with PM Automotive, who I must say are fabulous. They communicate well. I call and get voicemail and no room to leave a message. Website does not work. It says invalid. Cannot leave a message within the Yelp app. My battery is dead. Just 10 months later. Ridiculous. Sell me a crap battery or what? It left me dead in the road twice. PM did a tuneup for me said "yeah it's no good". 5 J cannot even get a hold of. Last December Jose wouldn't even reply to an email or anything. I had just gotten a medical evaluation of cancer reoccurrence and PM was right there to help me with superb work. Take your car to PM Automotive keep driving past 5 J. I spent over 300 at 5 J for this battery and install. Let me say I do not like leaving negative reviews for anyone. It just isn't who I am. I believe everyone deserves a chance. Was driving to work one morning and noticed the clutch on my WRX was making weird noises. The drive home was even worse and noticed the gears slipping...yup I needed a new clutch. Next morning I hit up a few local shops that specializes in Subaru and everybody was booked until the following week...except 5Js! Jose was able to squeeze me into his schedule that same day. I dropped off the car Wednesday, he sent me a msg to confirm the clutch needed to be replaced and I okay'd the work. Next day he sents me a work authorization for a couple more things (clutch fork was busted and replacing the transmission fluid). I authorized the work, the new invoice wasn't that much higher than what was originally quoted. Later that day, he calls me up tells me the work is done and they're just waiting on a test drive. Grabbed a lyft to the shop, grabbed my car, paid for the service, and I was on my way home. I noticed some weird things with my window controls, hit up Jose and he walked me through the steps to fix it on my own (it was really simple). I am very satisfied with Jose's knowledge and professionalism. Had he not been around, I'd still be waiting to get my car into a shop as we speak! Thank you Jose! I was having an issue with starting my 2014 Outback which I just purchased used a month earlier. AAA came out and discovered that the battery was dead. A few weeks later, the vehicle again would not start. I had AAA tow the Outback to 5 Js for a diagnostic check. Jose quoted a fixed price for the the troubleshooting, which was expected to take an hour of work. However, they had to spend much more time than expected. Jose kept to his word and charged me the original price. Additionally, Jose kept in contact with me, updating me often about the status of my car. 2018 Subaru Outback with 25k miles on it. Transmission was inadvertently drained by a business I will not name and damaged during a normal oil change. Took my 2018 Outback for a full transmission replacement to 5 J's. The owner, Jose, seemed responsive and knowledgeable on the phone, so I took a chance on an independent operator rather than the dealership (dealership would not cover under drivetrain warranty). Replacement reman transmission from Subaru was bad. Had to reorder and install another transmission. As you can imagine this whole process Was much longer and very stressful when one is at the mercy of the unknown. Jose did a very good job in working thru the problem(s) and keeping me informed. He did a very good job in cleaning up both the messes of the original oil change and the second bad transmission. He was always very transparent on the updates. I also find him to be extremely ethical and customer oriented. I now have a Subaru mechanic in my corner that I can trust. read more

I was thoroughly impressed with their desire to understand the problem, which was complex, and not stop until the solution was found. I live in the Central Coast- this shop is 3 hrs away. Worth a 10 hour drive to get it done honestly and thoroughly. My 2013 Subi WRX 5MT is running better than ever now. Jose kept me up to date on the different diagnoses and costs. After driving home, my CEL on my frs came on and it came out as P0018. I research everything and tried debugging the issue myself. I tried the simple things to try and make sure it wasn't the acutal sprockets that had to be swapped because it was an intense work.I tried doing two oil changes with a oil system flush, tried changing the OCVs to see if the code would hop, and no luck. At this step, its either the ECU or the sprockets. Next step was going to the dealership to see if its covered under any warranty and try to talk to corporate Toyota. Dealership did the same steps and pointed towards changing the sprockets before doing anything else. Toyota corporate wasn't of any help. In the end, I took my car out and called around a few Subaru shops. I found 5 J's through yelp and saw someone in the comments had to change their sprockets out. As this problem isn't common and requires touching the engine, I was a little eased that these guys had some experience. Gave them a call, got a quote, got my car out of Toyota and went in to get my sprockets changed. The turnaround would be 1-2 days and the quote was pretty reasonable and a fraction of what Toyota was charging me. Funny thing was, the Dealership tried to match the quote but I decided that I had enough dealing with them. After handing over my car, they got the sprockets and my spark plugs changed in two days. During the middle of the process, they called me saying my gaskets+o rings looked pretty and asked if it was okay to change it with the cost of 7$ of material. Of course, I said yes but it was reassuring that they called me to tell me about this. Picked up the car the next day and after 50 miles, my CEL never came back on. This place is truly a Dad and Son shop. The process might be different but these guys know what they're doing! Shout-out to Jose would be helping through this! read more
