We hired 5 Star Chimney Service in 2023 to address a persistent water leak coming through our chimney. The repair cost us $7,200, and despite seven follow-up service calls, the issue remains unresolved. As of May 2025, we are still experiencing active water intrusion into our daughter's bedroom. During their last visit, the company attempted to shift blame to our roof and solar panel installation. However, we can clearly see water dripping directly from the bricks inside our ceiling. The chimney bricks are visibly cracking and flaking, and the crown work--originally completed by 5 Star--has already failed and needs to be redone. After growing increasingly concerned, we brought in three independent professionals: a chimney sweep, a licensed roofer, and an experienced mason. All three independently concluded that the original repairs were flawed and that the materials and techniques used were substandard. Here's a sampling of what they had to say: The Chimney Sweep: "What kind of hillbilly techniques are they using? With all that white coating, the bricks can't breathe. They're waterlogged and flaking apart. It's a mess." The Roofer: "Who did this work so I can be sure to never suggest them to any of my clients?" The Mason: "The cracked bricks should have been replaced, not slathered with sealant. The crown is already cracked, and aluminum flashing was used instead of lead, which isn't up to industry standards. This is in really bad shape." Despite 5 Star's claims of honoring their warranty, we've had seven visits over the span of three years. At this point, we believe they've exhausted their ability to fix the issue and failed to advise us on an appropriate long-term solution. We have since retained legal counsel and are pursuing a partial refund for ineffective labor, substandard materials, and ongoing damage to our home. While we hope 5 Star Chimney Service will ultimately do the right thing and take responsibility, we are now forced to hire a new contractor to completely redo the work. Unlike other services we checked with they actually went on the roof and took photos of the chimney and the problems needing resolution. We ended up going with them given the thoroughness of the inspection and the confidence that Sean inspired with his professionalism and complete discussion of what was essential and the options we had. They came on time as scheduled and completed the work on time. They were professional, very courteous, thorough, and left the roof and grounds very clean. They installed a liner in the chimney (as it did not have one) and completely refurbished the exterior of the chimney. October 5, 2023 These people damaged my girlfriend's vehicle over a month ago. The owner has yet to respond to my claims, even after I have submitted a statement and a recording of the incident. One of the workers threw a metal piece off the roof, and another worker failed to catch it, and it scratched my girlfriend's car. They even left some residue that wouldn't come off the door as well. We have yet to hear anything from this company on how they plan to fix the damage. DO NOT USE THIS BUSINESS. We are hardworking people who didn't even request a service with these people, and they have damaged our property and refused to resolve the issue. They don't even have a real address so that I can speak to someone in person. Sean and Alan came to inspect our three flues, two fireplace flues and the furnace flue. We use the living room fireplace from about October to March, everyday if it warrants it. So I knew that flue needed cleaning. As it were, we needed not only a cleaning but a flue liner. They completed the job in two hours. They were professional, courteous. The only thing is that, we were told that there were gaps in our furnace flue. It wasn't clear if they did any repairs on that. So I contacted Five Star and we're waiting for a reply. These guys are great. Sean repaired my chimney 18 months ago and did a fantastic, professional and neat job. I was very pleased. Recently, I had a leak inside the house due to the heavy rains we have been having. I called 5 Star and Sean cam out again and determined that a piece of the flashing had aged and was the cause of the leak. He fixed it straight away, very quickly and professionally. Worst experience ever. Called them and scheduled a chimney inspection on Friday afternoon. Originally the dispatcher said they will be here between 11:30 and 2:30 but they did not show up at all! Dispatcher was not helpful at all. She did not provide any ETA and ghosted me in the end. Then on the second day she replied they had to take care of the massive CO2 issue of the seniors. Thanks to the great Installers Sean & Damon, office manager Lynn Conway. Very professional, knowledge was excellent. Rescued me from the last installer where I couldn't even use the wood stove after the new smaller liner.  With the larger vent pipe with the insulating beads the stove now fires right up and is producing tremendous heat in the cellar. Using a window fan on a chair in the cellar to blow the heat up the stairs to the living area. The ceiling fans can disperse the heat to other rooms as needed. The excess heat is directed into the garage and work shop. The up-stair's fireplace with the Hydro-Hearth water heat system was packed with creosote. I couldn't remove it with a steel brush. The chemical clean and their special tools got it looking like new as does the chimney. The fireplace heats the water in the curved pipes that serve as a huge grate that heats the baseboards with a 90 watt solar pump. However now I can use side load Nightingale wood stove again since it runs for 2-3 hours longer and stays hot for another 2 because of the fire brick liner.    Great Job to all. Value was good with the deal where I offered to clean up and dispose the old undersize liner and clay liner and bring to the our local waste management/recycle area. That saved me $$ and saved the installers a lot of time both in cleaning, loading into their van, then unloading next time their dump was open. read more

They came by on Tuesday and gave us a fair estimate to remove the old damper, clean and re-line the smoke chamber, and install a top damper. We live near the water and the old bottom damper was rusted out and leaking with wind blown rain. I communicated the urgency of this work to 5 Star Chimney Ceaning and they were able to squeeze us in that Thursday. Jeffery arrived early and explained what would be done. He did an amazing job of working fast and efficient while also maintaining a clean working area. From start to finish it took around 2 hours. I am SO happy with my experience with 5 Star Ventilation. I called because my cap flew off while it was raining and we wanted a nicer one anyway. The office manager Don set me up with an appointment for the same week because it was considered a bit of a hazard (animals like to go in your chimney sometimes to nest). I received a telemarketing call at my home and I am on the do not call list to boot. The folks at 5 Star Chimney Cleaning did a great job telling me about their offer. They gave me special pricing. They scheduled me for 11AM today. I verified with the Boston Call team that this was confirmed. When I got off the phone I researched the company and wanted to verify that the company did indeed call because I had some technical questions and I am very security minded. I reached their Westborough, Massachusetts office and they confirmed that I was on their schedule for today at 11AM. I wrote it on my calendar immediately after I was satisfied and looked at their reviews. I had confirmed this appointment after it was made with both Boston and with their main Westborough location - TWICE. Well today without any call ahead or any communication of any kind - I waited and waited and waited ---- THEY WERE A NO SHOW. I tried to call both numbers listed on the internet for the company and the phones just were a fast busy - constantly and I called multiple times - both numbers. I also tried to reach them via their email and the website contact screen sent back an error message that there was something wrong at that time. I decided then to call headquarters in Bellport, New York and asked for the owner - Mr. Lee (who was listed on the Better Business Bureau as the owner) - I reached someone who finally said that he was Tom and the office manager. I had to verify that I had reached the correct number because he answered the phone with one word - "Service". I asked to speak to the owner and he said why would he want to speak to you. I told him why I was calling and he told me that I was not on the schedule!!!!! I told him that I had confirmed the scheduled appointment twice - once with Boston, and once with Westborough and had placed it on my calendar asap. I told him about the local phone numbers and that they seemed to be out of order. He offered zero explanation or any apology of any kind and said that I was not on the schedule and I could not be accommodated today or even on a day this week. He had a record of my being called however but said that I was not on the schedule. I asked him if he could accommodate me this week at all - considering that I had taken the time off and had also waited for a couple of hours with nobody showing up. He said no - that the earliest that he could reschedule was next week - Tuesday or Wednesday. I asked him if he was going to try to find out why I was not on the schedule as confirmed. And he said why would I do that? So much for any customer service whatsoever after a no show! I decided that since I had gone through so much trouble over this that there could not possibly be a happy ending with this company and I declined to reschedule. I am just posting my experience - there are many stellar reviews out there - but my experience was not good whatsoever - in fact it was a very uncomfortable experience from the beginning (they were soliciting and calling my do not call number) and it ended with a no show. And they telemarketed my home - not the other way around. There was zero concern or any attempt at finding out what happened or rearranging their schedule to accommodate me because I had been so inconvenienced. None. The guys who were sent could not give me a quote on that work, they said they were not the "true masons", but they were able to quote me on a new liner for my interior chimney, which I had them do that same day. They lie and can't be trusted, I booked a last minute appointment for a Saturday between 10 and 1. U received a call frim dispatch at 1 saying the tech was a half hour away. I then recieved a call from the tech telling me he was an hour away and he google earthed my house and it had ice on the roof so he couldn't come. There was no ice on my roof and I told him that. When I called dispatch they gave me the run around and finally told me they are not allowed the clean chimneys that are under 30 years old. Exceptionally excellent service. I was scheduled for a chimney cleaning. Rob and Tim came down and after inspecting the chimney they actually said I didn't need a cleaning. What company representatives are THAT honest with their clients? They looked throughout the chimney and advised us (with no pressure) about some needed services. I'm a sales person and can tell when I am being bamboozled. This was no such case. They were right on their recommendations. Not only were they honest but they were friendly. He also showed me the issues and luckily, things that were still in good shape! He wrote up a complete report and estimates for the recommended repairs at the end of the inspection. We thought we had a blockage in our chimney because our hot water heater was venting back into our basement. I needed to call a chimney company and I went with the one that had the best rating. I see now why these guys are the best. It was easy to make the appointment. Two guys came and inspected the entire system and found that the vents were all clear. They found that since we had went to a high efficiency furnace that there wasn't enough heat remaining in the system to carry out the exhaust on very hot days. They gave us a couple of options that could take care of the problem and didn't charge us for the inspection. They are very professional and I wished all companies worked the way they do. 5 Star Timmy and his assistant Anthony came over first for just an estimate. He was extremely professional and gave me a written estimate. He explained all the options and gave me prices for everything. I had a problem with my chimney cap and I was looking to install a wood burning stove. I also wanted him to inspect my gas boilers liner. He spent a lot time explaining everything and was not pushy or giving me a hard sell. He showed me for myself exactly what he didn't like about the previous installed liner, how it was undersized and of cheap quality. There was no pressure, Timmy said he could make it work if I wanted and he could just redo connections but I was so impressed with his knowledge and far price that I decided to have him reline the entire gas boiler side. When doing the job he found newspaper stuffed around liner, used as insulation! This is HIGHLY flammable and I am so glad I had him do the liner over. After that he answered numerous questions about options on purchasing a wood insert for my fireplace. Once I decided on a wood burning insert he pick that up and installed that flawlessly. This included installing another 6 inch lifetime guarantee liner. I am extremely happy with the work. This guy knows how to treat his customers. Ironically named company... I scheduled an appointment with them back in November, and had everything confirmed with a manager. The day before, I call to confirm we are all set for the next day and their customer service person tells me that I was written down but not put on the master schedule (whatever that means) so basically they are booked and they are not able to come to us as promised. She apologizes, offers me a better rate and reschedules with me for the following month. That day comes, and they don't show. I call to see what the deal is and am told that their crew is finishing up a job from the day before and they can't be there for another 2-3 hours. They were running behind due to the weather which is reasonable, so I decided to give them another chance and reschedule for a few weeks away. I am told we will be their first appointment of the day on 12/21 and they will be there between 7-9am. Great! Today, 12/21 arrives...9:05am and no show, no call. I call and speak to their customer service rep who tells me there is only one truck running today, and she will call me "right back"...30 minutes go by. Mind you this is the weekend before Christmas, my family is literally planning their entire day around this as we have other errands to run and cannot be waiting around all day, especially after being told we are going to be the first appointment of the day. Customer service rep picks up and says "she was just dialing me" (yeah, right) and says that her guy is just finishing up a job in Massachusetts and can be here in an hour and 45 minutes...I say, "I thought we were the first appointment of the day" she raised her voice and actually started arguing with me...I tell her they've fallen through on their word 3 times now, and she starts bringing up excuses about the flu, yada yada...EVERY excuse in the book and no follow through. Scheduling was a breeze even during the busiest season, and our initial cleaning and inspection was painless. I was pleased and impressed by how knowledgeable, talented, experienced and confident these folks are, which became evident very quickly after it was determined that we needed repairs. During our multiday project the crew was polite, friendly and flexible, they worked remarkably cleanly, they were efficient and timely (surprisingly so!), and endlessly patient. At every step in the process it seemed that the team's dual priorities were the work and our comfort, and their ongoing communication was of the highest quality.
