My husband and I live in NH and we have purchased two Mendota gas fireplaces from Chelmsford Fireplace Center. The sales department was very helpful however the service department is unable to service NH fireplaces. The service department is not able to answer calls so you do have to wait for a return call. I had called and had to wait days only to hear that they never got my message. I did call the owner, Corey, who called me back and heard my concerns around the service department communication. I will say that every person that CFC has been sent to my house was courteous and knowledgeable however getting in touch with them to schedule a visit was more effort than expected. read more

Terrible customer service. I called to ask about a fireplace for our porch. I was given a number to contact their estimator/installer - made the call and was told to text. Sent the text and never got a response. Waited three days, followed up and was told "on the way now". No showed. Waited two weeks and called the shop again, only to be placed on hold, and then told to call a different estimator/installer. They won't even schedule for you. Sales office showed zero desire to even attempt to make a sale. What's worse, the person on the phone didn't care that I had been ghosted by the very person they asked me contact to schedule. If you are looking for a business that actually wants to provide the service you need, this is not the place. read more

My next door neighbors and I both are considering having fireplaces installed so I went to Chelmsford Fireplace Center yesterday to do some research for both of us. Only one employee was wearing a mask. None of them were social distancing. The rest weren't. There's a sign on the door to wear a mask. There was no sanitizer (I only mention that because they say they provide it). These people (or people they subcontract) would need to come into my home to install this. We have purchased 2 gas fireplace inserts, a gas stove for our basement plus a gas grill from CFC. We have a problem with one of the gas inserts in our living room. We have continually called since October (2 months), leaving a message each time to be called back and we still have not received a call. Their customer service message says the call will be returned within 48 hours. We are still waiting after 8 weeks. We will never purchase another piece from them. I don't know what happened but their service is terrible. read more

My husband and I made several visits last year to quote out a gas fireplace. Honestly our visits were hit or miss depending on who was working. While some of the employees are very helpful and knowledgeable, others were rude and didn't have answers to simple questions. My husband had a few specific questions about a fireplace blower kit. Unfortunately one of the employees was very condescending and acted as if my husband had no idea what he was talking about. Yes we may be young, but the joke is on them. My husband is a mechanical engineer who specializes in fan design. He's an easy going guy, but was very upset about the way he was spoken to. We took our business to another store in New Hampshire. We love our new gas fireplace, and, as Chelmsford residents, it's too bad we couldn't support a local business. Oh well! read more

This place is fantastic! We knew we wanted to get a wood fireplace insert but were still in our early stages of research, We walked out having purchased a Jotul 450, and the entire team that works there is fantastic. Corey was great, and we also met the installer lead, Steve. Great team, and I'd HIGHLY recommend considering this place before making ANY purchase - you won't be disappointed. Very helpful staff. No pressure sales, as salespeople don't work on commission. Got a fireplace insert. The installer they recommended named Derek was great. Derek was a great communicator, with prompt replies via text, email, and phone.. He went above and beyond to assure we were happy. We will look forward to working with him for service. One unexpected cost was that in addition to the unit cost, and the installation by Derek (which was very reasonably priced), the gas and plumbing contractors were separate and totaled $1500 (although the electrician also added 2 outlets for us). read more

I had been looking to replace an old Vermont Castings freestanding fireplace and had done research on various brands. Do you think I could even get a return phone call or email from Boston/Cambridge area stores? The answer is NO. I emailed Chelmsford Fireplace to ask which models of Valor, Jotul, and Rais they had on the showroom floor. I had a clearly written returned email in ten minutes. I went up to Chelmsford and purchased a Valor stove within 15 minutes of arrival on a Saturday, and it was installed the following Friday. I knew this was a quality place as i entered the store. The store was crowded with customers, it was clean and organized, and the staff were attentive and knowledgeable. This is completely the opposite situation that I have found at other stores. If you want to speak to someone who knows their business and products, take that 30 minute ride up from Boston. I promise, it will be worth it. Since I am located in Somerville I am out of their installation area. No problem, they have The Fireplace Guys LLC out of Malden do their Boston installations. The installation was executed perfectly and complete in four hours. A fantastic overall experience. read more

An important part of our renovation plan concerned where we could put a wood stove and/or wood fireplace. Clearly, a wood fireplace in the house would involve more than having it look pretty. Upkeep, making sure no embers would fly around, checking the flue, cleaning the hearth and surrounding area, and dragging in wood (possibly hiding bugs) were not going to happen in my house. The compromise was a Napoleon gas fireplace with a granite facing and a nice mantle in the house, and a JET UL wood stove for the 3-season room. It was also understood that I would not be cleaning either: That would be Mr. K's job. We made all our fireplace and wood stove purchases at Chelmsford Fireplace, a family-owned and -operated business in our neighborhood. They offer a wide variety of wood and gas fireplaces, wood stoves, glass, Weber grills, hearths, accessories, and covers for wood. Everyone who works there is knowledgeable about the inventory and was able to give good suggestions. Personnel has answered our questions and addressed our concerns over the past year. Once again, we got the builder's discount, which was helpful and appreciated. Our only gripe was about the installation of the wood stove (this job was contracted out): During the first heavy rain, water poured through the chimney system. Our roofer fixed it right away, even though the problem was with the flashing around the chimney. read more

After calling around to several fireplace centers that can't seem to even answer the phone (North Reading I'm looking at you) I was relieved to finally get some real live humans at Chelmsford Fireplace. Went over and had a great conversation with Bud. Ended up with a beautiful Jotul Oslo at a great price (well under some of the $3000 stoves I looked at with the same build quality and in fact I am so glad I got a side door) and the installer they recommended did a nice job again at a good price. The showroom and sales were very good, but the installation was disappointing: 1) the cost was higher than the salesman indicated it would be (with pre-existing gasline and short chimney); the decision to buy was based on the expected total cost and that turned out to be higher than expected 2) the installers left all installation debris (a significant volume) for me to deal with; not just the old gas log that they took out, but all of the packaging and leftover installation materials as well 3) the installers left soot stains on the carpet so we had to have the carpet cleaned after the installation 4) would only accept CASH as payment; no checks, no credit cards 5) they removed my full-chimney cap so that they could install the small cap for the gas insert, but that now leaves most of my chimney uncovered; it will be another additional expense to get that situation fixed The installation of the gas insert seems to have been done correctly but the cost and cleanup time/effort/money after the installation would give me pause from using them again. read more

I bought a fireplace about 15 years ago (for our home theatre room) and it was a very good experience, so I decided to go back to Chelmsford Fireplace to get a fireplace for my new house. The fireplace for our new house was a custom one that required a lot of thought and consultation but the person I worked with (Cory Simmons) was great; he researched my detailed questions, provided guidance and advice, and was low pressure. The purchase process was a great experience. The fireplace we installed was complicated (because of my choices) but Wes Dinsmore (who installed it) and Cory guided me through the process and it went off without a hitch. This week, we are at the point where everything is running - what a thrill! The fireplace looks fantastic and is the centerpiece of our (open-concept) house. I have so many good things to say about Chelmsford Fireplace that it's hard to know where to begin. First, the sales staff were all friendly and helpful, and they're experienced and knowledgeable. We worked with Cory and Bud, and both of them worked their hardest to make sure that the wood fireplace insert we picked out was right for us and was what we wanted. They had extensive suggestions on places to find wood, which kind of wood to buy, where to store it, and even how to chop and prepare our own wood. They knew detailed figures about the inserts they had in stock off the tops of their heads, and were clearly passionate about the products they sell. I had all of my questions answered, and I learned a ton about the entire process. When we'd decided on a stove and I went in to purchase it, Bud helped me measure and triple-check every part of the stove to make sure it'd fit in my firebox. He also walked me through options for different hearths, and was extremely supportive of the idea of a DIY hearth extension (I'm the kind of person who likes to build things for fun)-- he even made me photocopies of specifications for the materials I'd need. It's rare to find a salesman who will take the time to provide me with suggestions on how to build something that could be bought in their store. I felt this was a great indicator of integrity and customer service. The prices in store were very competitive with other local fireplace businesses, and they had some fantastic sales when we went. Some may find them helpful but I wasn't one of them. The salesman seemed very keen to tell me what I wanted. Thanks, but I'd come for advice on how to install a stove, not to be told that I didn't want what I wanted. The attitude was: we sell this stuff, therefore this is what you must want. When he found out our house was a distance from his store he said he couldn't make money on traveling that far for a job so it wasn't worth his while. Fair comment, I guess, if a little vulgar. I decided I wanted to get a Weber gas grill. Amazon would drop off a box and then I could undertake the 30 step assembly process Ugh. Homedepot would give me the box and then I'd have to hope the enormous thing would fit into my car and not break my back in the process. If I got it home I'd be looking at that 30 step assembly. I was searching for a better solution. The Weber web site listed the Chelmsford Fireplace Center as an 'Alliance' dealer. Not sure what that is, but I called them and they had the same grill for the same price as Depot and Amazon and they would deliver it assembled! Hard to argue with buying local when those are the terms. Even the accessories were the same price! The grill is sitting on my deck now and they gave me detailed directions on how to break it in and even the best way use it in general. read more

I was looking for help with parts and installation on a used stove. The person in the sales department was rude and blew me off like I had done something to offend him personally. He told me to "Keep looking around, I'm with a customer actually buying a unit." and practically hung up on me. I had been in the store previously and what they had to offer did not impress me. The sheet metal "interpretations" of classic wood stove designs and gas "faux stoves" that fill the show room LOOK great, but expect to pay through the nose for them. This is part of the reason that I went and bought a used cast iron stove. Granted,as a business they are knowledgeable about their products and have been in the business for quite some time, so they seemed like a solid choice to help my family finish the job. Instead I got shoddy customer service. It shows me that, as a customer, there is a dollar amount and if they don't think you make it you aren't worth their time and they'll let you know. I will, under no circumstances, be doing business with these folks and I'd urge others to save themselves the indignity. read more

I bought a Jotul from Cory and after a whole bunch of comparative shopping (4 stores in NH plus Chelmsford Fireplace) this was still the best deal in at least a 50 mile radius for any similar stove. No one tried to up sell me, everyone was helpful and professional, and he even took the time to get my thermostat working before I left the store. I did not use their installer so I can't comment on that, but all the customer service I got in store was great. They even carried my super heavy hearth pad out to truck for me. I will say, it takes longer than you would think to order in a hearth pad, but they were upfront and accurate with me on the lead time (It just never occurred to me how long it would take to come in) I 100% recommend them. read more

The installer they recommended as well as the staff at Chelmsford Fireplace take no ownership for resolving the issue. In fact they are defensive and rude when I even try to get advice on how to resolve the problem. Once these guys have made the sale you are on your own. I called back after the first hang up and his next question was "did I buy the fireplace there to which I replied no", he then said then he could not help me and hung up a second time.
